Washington is pressuring Beijing to act like a “normal nation” on the world stage, Mike Pompeo has repeated, accusing China, ironically, of disregarding international laws and seeking to impose “decades of pain” around the globe.

“We’re very worried that China will put the people in many countries around the world, in Africa and Central America and Latin America, in a debt trap that will cause those countries decades of pain,” the Secretary of State said on the Laura Ingraham Show, stressing that Donald Trump’s administration is the first one to recognize the danger, one which it is more-than-willing to tackle. 

China is probably, over the long term, the biggest challenge, national security challenge that faces our country.

For the US, among the biggest threats posed by China is the theft of intellectual property, which Trump has vowed to root out, Pompeo reiterated. Conveniently unsealed on Tuesday, charges by the Justice Department against a group of Chinese intelligence officers who allegedly tried to steal US aviation secrets is the latest “mosaic of our strategic effort” to push back against Beijing, the diplomat noted. 

Implementing its vision of “fair and reciprocal trade” with China is also one of the main objectives the White House is currently pursuing. China’s growing economic might around the globe amid the ongoing Sino-American trade war remains a major concern, Pompeo pointed out.

To battle the Chinese threat, the US will continue to engage in a “multi-pronged effort” to force it to “behave like a normal nation on commerce and with respect to the rules of international law,” Pompeo stated.

China’s direct investment in Africa has grown significantly over the years, especially in Algeria, Zambia, Kenya, Republic of Congo, and Nigeria. While there is no official Chinese data, around $ 143 billion in loans were also extended by the Chinese government, banks and contractors to African nations this century, the China Africa Research Initiative estimates. Beijing has also directed $ 250 billion in direct investments to the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC) between 2015 and 2019, in addition to about $ 500 billion in trade.

The Sino-American trade conflict entered a new stage after tit-for-tat tariff hikes, targeting in total some $ 260 billion-worth of bilaterally traded goods, came into force in September. While Trump threated more tariff measures to fix last year’s $ 375 billion trade deficit with the world’s second-biggest economy, the US has steadily been agitating Beijing closer to its shores, challenging China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan as well as South China and East China Seas, through the ‘freedom of navigation’ principle.

US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley’s assertion that Iran is the “biggest issue” for the US today is ridiculous and Washington has much bigger foreign and domestic issues to be worried about, experts told RT.

In an interview with the Fox & Friends morning show, Haley said that Americans “do need to be worried about Iran” because the country is “constantly in the middle of trouble”.

But former US diplomat Jim Jatras believes any claims that Iran was the US’s biggest problem are “ridiculous” and that Iran has “no real relationship to US national interests at all”.

Seyed Mohammad Marandi, a professor of North American Studies at the University of Tehran, told RT that if Iran really is the Trump administration’s biggest issue, it shows that the US “doesn’t understand its own priorities.”

Jatras said it was unfortunate that US President Donald Trump had “surrounded himself” with neoconservatives and people from previous administrations — and that instead of conducting his promised “America First” foreign policy, he was running an “Israel and Saudi Arabia First” foreign policy.

Haley also told Fox & Friends that European countries, which have reaffirmed their commitment to the Iran nuclear deal which Trump scrapped earlier this year, are “so wrong” and that is is all down to their “ego and pride”.

European countries have come up with a new “special purpose vehicle” (SPV) — a mechanism which aims to help European companies avoid potential US sanctions if they do business in Iran after Trump reintroduced economic sanctions on Tehran earlier this year.

Asked about Brussels’ so-called ego and pride, Jatras said that any mechanism the EU comes up with is “only as good as European courage and willingness to stand up against Washington, which I consider to be at best questionable”.

Jatras maintains that “all it would take” was the US Treasury Department to sanction the new EU mechanism before Europeans would “collapse like a house of cards” and bow to US demands. “I wish the europeans had some ego and pride, but they don’t, they’re worthless and weak,” he added.

Marandi, on the other had, said the US was acting like a “rogue regime” and an “arrogant power” by dictating terms to the Europeans, telling them what they can and cannot do. “[The US] has no respect for Europe, it has no respect for European countries, it has no respect for European companies, nor European citizens,” he said. Trump, he added, is “behaving like some kind of Godfather, where he expects countries to abide by his demands and if not they’ll be punished.”

In the Fox interview, Haley also hit out at former Secretary of State John Kerry who has said that he stayed in touch with Iran’s foreign minister, calling the admission “anti-American” and hurtful to the country.

Jatras agreed that Kerry’s activities are “questionable” and that a former Secretary of State should not be carrying out his own foreign policy, regardless of what the current administration’s policy is.

Haley also claimed that world leaders laughed during Trump’s speech at the UN this week out of “respect” for how “honest” he is.

World leaders laughed at US President Donald Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly because they respect him and appreciate his honesty, US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley argued. Trump’s critics were not convinced.

Appearing Wednesday morning on Fox & Friends, Haley argued that Trump is “very good at knowing his audience” and speaking directly to them.

“I deal with these leaders every single day, I know exactly how they think. Do they love America? No. Do they respect America? Now they do. When he said that, they love how honest he is, and it’s not diplomatic, and they find it funny,” she said.

Haley accused the media of spinning the moment to make it “something disrespectful” of Trump, while in actuality the world leaders fawned over the US leader.

“All day yesterday, they were falling over themselves to get a picture with him, to talk about how great his speech was, how strong it was,” she said. “They love that he’s honest with them and they’ve never seen anything like it, so there’s a respect there.”

The anti-Trump #Resistance on Twitter was not convinced.

“That is not what diplomats told me,” a CBS reporter quipped.

The article she linked did not illuminate that. Instead, it says unnamed diplomats at the UN said that “they have learned that meeting with Mr. Trump one on one is more useful than listening to his speech and immediately issuing an emotional reaction.” Such as laughing, presumably.

Trump himself was of two minds about the incident. “Didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s OK,” he said smiling as the UN audience reacted to his claim about his administration’s accomplishments.

Afterward, however, he played it as if he intended to get some laughs all along. “That was meant to get some laughter. It was great,” he said.

French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli says next year’s French Open at Roland Garros tournament will toughen up its dress code – prohibiting form-fitting catsuits such as those Serena Williams donned this year.

In an interview with Tennis Magazine, Giudicelli emphasized that eye-catching, figure-hugging outfits will no longer be allowed at the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.

“I believe we have sometimes gone too far,” he said. “Serena’s outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.”

This year the 23-time Grand Slam winner wore a Nike-designed full-length black suit which was aimed to prevent blood clots, a major health issue which Williams suffered from after giving birth to her daughter last autumn.

The 36-year-old player also confessed that the black catsuit made her feel like a warrior princess from Black Panther, a movie which was released in February. Williams was named the highest-paid female athlete by Forbes in its annual report on Tuesday. The US tennis star earned just $ 62,000 in prize money between June 2017 and June 2018, but added a whopping $ 18.1 million through endorsements.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is the most admired and appreciated player in the NHL, judging from the 2017-18 NHLPA player poll.

A survey of more than 500 players resulted in Crosby being voted the most difficult to play against, best role model, best team player, the player you’d want to win one game, and the player who would be a great coach upon retirement.

Crosby finished second to Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid for which player to start a franchise with, and to Wayne Gretzky to the question of picking anyone all-time as a teammate.

Players were asked more than 20 questions, with the NHL Players’ Association choosing which to publish. This is in addition to regular conversations with players on topics of importance that include feedback kept internally at the NHLPA.

Players like points system

Among the most interesting responses was that 77.3 per cent of players are fine with the way points are decided: two for any win and one for an overtime or shootout loss. But several suggested the international point system of three for a win in regulation, two for a win in overtime or a shootout, and one for an overtime or shootout loss.

Ottawa Senators Erik Karlsson was voted toughest defenceman to play against, and Toronto’s D.J. Smith was given the nod as assistant coach who should be the next head coach.

TMontreal Canadiens’ Bell Centre was voted the best rink to play in and the home of the best ice, while the Florida Panthers’ BB&T Center has the worst ice, according to players surveyed.

Joel Quenneville of the Chicago Blackhawks, who like Crosby has won the Stanley Cup three times, was voted the coach players would most like to play for.

McDavid not surprisingly was voted the fastest skater, and Washington Capitals centre Nicklas Backstrom was voted the most underrated player.
