Mexico remains a popular spot for British travellers looking for beautiful beaches and good weather.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are just two of the locations that offer flights between Mexico and the UK.

A number of tourists have been struck by a crippling bug that has resulted in sickness and diarrhoea, prompting warnings from health authorities.

Just days after the announcement that the US would be cutting flights in light of recent violence, is the area still safe to travel to?

At least 46 British tourists have been affected by the illness, caused by the Cyclospora bug.

In 2016, a whopping 443 Britons were affected, while last year saw 78 Britons struck down.

The cause is linked to contaminated food in the area which is delivered to the popular hotel resorts and comes from infected human faeces contaminating the water.

Nick Harris, head of travel at Simpson Millar solicitors representing victims of past and current outbreaks, said: “The current number of victims is just the tip of the iceberg and this is now obviously out of control again but should have been avoided.

“People should have been warned before travelling so that they could make an informed choice. This is beyond belief.”

He has urged travellers to ask for Cyclospora test, otherwise there is a risk that “someone will die before the problem is treated seriously”.

Richard Elson from Public Health England, said: “We strongly urge people to maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene when travelling to the Riviera Maya coast in Mexico and to be aware of the risk of infection from a food and water bug, Cyclospora.”

While Mexico is deemed to have some of the most dangerous cities in the world, the popular tourist destinations are considered safe to travel.

The Foreign Office warns to be on guard for any dangers following a number of shootings in 2017 in Cancun and Los Cabos.

The shootings were mainly between gang groups although travellers should be cautious not to be caught in the crossfire.

A tourist ferry was hit by an explosion earlier this year which injured 20 people including tourists.

“Street crime as well as more serious violent crime like robbery, assault and vehicle hijacking,” are just some of the crimes to be aware of, according to the FCO.

It is currently hurricane season in Mexico which runs from June to November.

Mexico was hit by Hurricane Aleta earlier this year, the first hurricane of the 2018 season.

Hurricane John could hit Mexico later this week, threatening strong winds along the coast.

The cheapest beach resorts in Europe have been unveiled in a new report by Post Office Travel Money, with Turkey taking the top place.

The tenth Post Office Travel Money Family Holiday Report has revealed that families heading to European hotspots can look forward to seeing their pounds stretch further in two-thirds of the destinations surveyed for the annual Beach Barometer cost comparison. 

This found that prices for 13 family items will be up to 36 per cent cheaper than last July, although its consumer research suggests increased spending on meals and drinks and kids’ beach items may wipe out some of that benefit.   

After comparing costs in 15 popular European resort areas, Post Office researchers found that prices have fallen since last July in Turkey, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, the Balearic Islands in Spain, South of France and Italy. 

A drop in local prices and a small year-on-year rise in the value of sterling against the euro and other European currencies account for the increased spending power for UK holidaymakers.

The report studied the cost of a “barometer basket” which includes a family meal, drinks, suncream, insect repellent and beach items ranging from buckets & spades, lilos and ice-creams to pedalo and banana boat rides in 15 European countries. 

Marmaris in Turkey came out the cheapest, with a bucket and spade costing just 82p, a pedalo £11.42 and a glass of wine £2.29. 

In total, prices have fallen 36 per cent to £79.81 but to the huge slump in the value of the Turkish lira against sterling, making Marmaris this summer’s bargain buy. 

In second place was Sunny Beach Bulgaria, where prices are down 4.4 per cent to   £83.99.

The Black Sea resort offers by far the cheapest family meal price at £33.69 for two adults and two children.  This is less than half the cost in nine other destinations including Majorca, the Algarve and Ibiza.

The Costa del Sol in Spain came third cheapest. There a bottle of beer costs £1.80, a family meal £40.72 and a half day sun lounger £4.06.

However overall prices were actually up this year by 5 per cent. It is the only top-six destination to show a price increase. 

Greek islands Crete and Corfu took fourth and fifth place respectively. Costs in Crete are down by 1.1 per cent.

In the Eurozone, the biggest fall was Corfu (£132.04) where prices are down over 24.2 per cent.

Families will also find Paphos (£132.94) in a lot cheaper this year.  

A 10.4 per cent fall in barometer costs makes the Cypriot resort the sixth cheapest destination. 

Holidaymakers visiting Porec in Croatia (£143.37) and the Algarve (£139.19) will find that prices have risen significantly in both.  In Porec, families can expect to pay 18.5 per cent more than last summer, while family costs have risen 12.4 per cent in the Algarve.  

This makes prices in the Portuguese family favourite 43 per cent higher than in the neighbouring Costa del Sol.  

The biggest rise recorded was in Limassol, Cyprus where prices are up by 31 per cent.  At £158.97, prices are almost 20 per cent higher than in Paphos.  The Post Office found similar price variations in other countries too.  In Spain, for example, prices have dropped marginally in Ibiza (£213.13) but they are still 46 per cent higher than in Majorca (£145.74) and over twice as high as in the Costa del Sol.

Most expensive of all for the 13 Beach Barometer items was Sorrento in southern Italy. Despite a 6.7 per cent fall, the total cost of £230.45 was over twice the price in Marmaris, Sunny Beach or the Costa del Sol.

A number of viral videos have captured the shocking moment popular beach resorts in Majorca and Menorca are hit by ‘mini-tsunamis’.

In the videos, water surges from the beaches and flows through the town.

Waves as high as five feet smashed the coast with bars and restaurants being affected.

People watch on as umbrellas and loungers are swept away by the water, and a car attempts to drive through.

The meteotsunamis, also known as meteorological tsunamis, occur when changes in barometric pressure are detected.

This causes the large waves to displace in the water which causes the flooding.

They can be as tall as six feet and despite smaller than regular tsunamis, also cause injuries and deaths.

No-one has been injured in the strong waves to hit the region.

Beaches were also relatively empty at the time as it occurred before tourists flocked to the coast for the day.

The video, captured on Facebook page Virales Mallorca, said: “Flooding in Port d’Alcudia. Climate change?”

People on Facebook were shocked, with many commenting that it isn’t the first time it has happened.

Many expressed their surprise at seeing a ‘rissaga’ which is what they are called in Catalan.

Another video showed flooding in Porto Cristo, with more water flowing through the town.

The incident has occurred less than 40 miles from the famous Love Island villa.

Contestants will not have been affected by the meteotsunami.

Last year, a mini-tsunami also hit a popular beach resort in the Netherlands.

A video captured the moment the water flooded the shores of Zandvoort and Katwijk.

Parasols and beach chairs were smashed by the water but no-one was injured, although many were shaken.

The worst tsunami in history occurred in 2004 in the Indian Ocean, after a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck.

It then generated a tsunami that claimed 230,000 lives and is one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

Progress, the Blairite Labour-supporting organization, is advertising for “volunteers” to fill its job vacancies, in a sign that a severe lack of funding is beginning to bite for the consistent Corbyn critics.

Listed on its job vacancies page are three unpaid roles; events, social media and sub-editor, with job specifications that intimate that such positions would be considered full-time positions –  only no salary and just expenses paid.

The group that represents much of the right of the party, including Liz Kendall, John Woodcock and New Labour’s Lord ‘I’m intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich’ Mandelson, even though not officially affiliated, appears to be contravening official Labour policy on non-payment of staff.

A memo was sent out to Labour staff yesterday which some close to the Labour leadership, such as Jeremy Corbyn’s former spokesman Matt Zarb-Cousin, saw as a direct dig at Chuka Umunna for advertising for unpaid staff. It stated: “It is against Labour Party policy to employ unpaid interns. As part of our 20-point plan for security and equality at work, set out in the 2017 General Election Manifesto, we have pledged to ban unpaid internships.”

Progress, whose director Richard Angell has been an outspoken critic of Corbyn and his type of politics, is known to have been struggling financially in recent times, having relied heavily on major donors to operate – donors such as multi-billionaire Lord David Sainsbury who in 2016 donated £260,000 to the Labour think-tank.

The financial stability of the group came under scrutiny after the 2017 general election in June, when Lord Sainsbury announced that he would stop giving financial backing to party political causes, and in doing so, denying the Labour pressure group much needed revenue. The Guardian reported that Angell would look to Progress members to make up the shortfall, asking them to contribute more in membership fees.

This seems to be an optimistic strategy for Angell to employ, considering his organization has only just over 3,000 members and subscribers, as of 1 September 2017, according to its website. These numbers are dwarfed by bitter Labour grassroots rivals Momentum, the left wing Corbyn-supporting organization who’s current membership has reached 40,000 – more than the Green Party which reportedly stands at 39,000.

Responding to criticism on social media to Progress’ hiring of unpaid staff, Angell has attempted to justify his organization’s employment policy by seeking to distinguish between ‘volunteering’ and ‘unpaid internships,’ insisting they would be “free to change their mind” and “opt out of this good cause with a social purpose.”

It remains to be seen as to whether people buy into Angell’s justification for non-payment of Progress staff, on yet another issue on which the Blairite group and Corbyn are not seeing eye-to-eye.

Shares of Wynn Resorts continued its slide on Monday morning. On Saturday, CEO Steve Wynn stepped down from his role as the Republican National Committee’s finance chairman in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct. 

The casino giant’s stock fell 6.58% at $ 168.42 per share in pre-market trading.

Multiple women have accused the billionaire casino mogul of pressuring them into sex and creating a sexualized workplace, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. Wynn has denied the allegations and called them “preposterous.”

Wynn has been a prolific donor to Republican candidates and groups, and joined the RNC as its finance chairman after President Donald Trump’s election. He has donated mostly to Republicans, such as Sen. Dean Heller, Sen. John McCain, and former Rep. Joe Heck, though he has made a few smaller donations to Democrats, such as former Vice President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.

Some lawmakers have considered returning their donations from Wynn amid the allegations.

Wynn’s stock was still up 1.72% year-to-date.
