Paris is bracing for yet another round of Yellow Vest protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets of the capital. More than 10,000 are expected to join the march, with the slogan ‘Macron Resign’.

France is gripped by the fifth consecutive weekend of Yellow Vests rallies, named after the high-visibility clothing drivers are required to keep in their vehicles. This Saturday, demonstrations are being held with motto ‘[Emmanuel] Macron’s resignation’.

Protesters are gathering on the Champs-Élysées, which has seen four weekends of clashes between rioters and police. However, unlike the previous four protests, the number of Yellow Vest protesters is relatively low. As of this morning, at least 25 people have been detained across the Île-de-France region, police revealed.

Armored vehicles belonging to the Gendarmerie – France’s military police – have been spotted near the Arc de Triomphe, the site of the fiercest confrontations between protesters and police.

Police have flooded Paris to contain the rallies, which may turn violent. The security forces have placed around 8,000 officers on the streets of the capital to quell fears of rioting.
People initially protested fuel price hikes due to come into force this January. The government has since abandoned its plans, but the demonstrators continued, demanding more concessions, including lower taxes and a higher minimum wage.

Violence at the protests, especially in the capital, has hit record levels, with several dead and hundreds of protesters injured. Police officers have also suffered injuries. The number of those detained throughout the protests has surpassed 4,500.

  • Democrats are sounding the alarm in the wake of President Trump’s booted Jeff Sessions as Attorney General on Wednesday.
  • Top Democrats including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, have raised fears that firing Sessions could hint that Trump plans to undermine the special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
  • A chorus of Republicans, including Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and the Senator-elect Mitt Romney of Utah, have also issued warnings following Sessions’ departure.

Scott Morrison to become Australia’s next PM, Turnbull vows to resign ‘not before too long’ https://briefnews.eu/scott-morrison-to-become-australias-next-pm-turnbull-vows-to-resign-not-before-too-long/ https://briefnews.eu/scott-morrison-to-become-australias-next-pm-turnbull-vows-to-resign-not-before-too-long/#respond Fri, 24 Aug 2018 05:41:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scott-morrison-to-become-australias-next-pm-turnbull-vows-to-resign-not-before-too-long/

After the newly elected leader of the Liberal Party Scott Morrison was picked to become Australia’s new prime minister, deposed Malcolm Turnbull noted that he would be leaving politics “not before too long.” Once he resigns, his Sydney mandate would be up for grabs, which could see the ruling coalition lose its one-seat majority in parliament. Morrison emerged victorious in the leadership vote on Friday after a three-way race with former home affairs minister Peter Dutton and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. Turnbull himself had withdrawn his candidacy after having barely survived the previous leadership challenge on Tuesday.

Swifts re-sign trio with Diamond potential https://briefnews.eu/swifts-re-sign-trio-with-diamond-potential/ https://briefnews.eu/swifts-re-sign-trio-with-diamond-potential/#respond Tue, 31 Jul 2018 13:21:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/swifts-re-sign-trio-with-diamond-potential/ THEY are the NSW Swifts’ Diamonds in the rough – three key signings coach Briony Akle says has the potential to be representing their country in the near future.

The Swifts have been quick to secure the signatures of young defender Maddy Turner, midcourter Maddy Proud and shooter Sophie Garbin before they went onto the open market late in August post the Super Netball decider.

MOVERS: Giant step towards minor premiership

RARE FEAT: Liz Cambage pulls of All-Star dunk

Each of the eight clubs in the competition have the exclusive right to re-sign any of their 10 contracted players, replacement players or training partners until the Monday after the grand final.

More Swifts signing are expected to be made public in coming days with Akle hopeful of retaining most, if not all, of her current crop of players.

“Pretty confident, yes, and hoping to have them signed by the end of the week,’’ she said.

Turner, 22, and Proud, 24, have re-signed for two seasons, with Garbin, 21, recommitting for a year.

OVERTAKE: Black Jack claims major win over Wild Oats

GOOD SHAPE: Diamonds will survive talent drain

“Briony (Akle) has given us the licence to play with freedom and remember why we play the game, which is for the love of it,’’ Proud said.

“Considering our average age, I think that we can only get better and I can’t wait to see how far the Swifts can go in 2019.’’

Key to the Swifts success in season three of Super Netball will be keeping new Diamond’s squad member Sarah Klau, captain Abbey McCulloch and shooting imports Helen Housby and Sam Wallace on the books.

The Swifts this year earned themselves a reputation as one of the most dangerous in the competition after claiming a number of big-name scalps, including competition favourites, the Giants, Firebirds and Lightning.

Theresa May agrees to a ‘time limited’ Brexit backstop after David Davis threatens to resign https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-agrees-to-a-time-limited-brexit-backstop-after-david-davis-threatens-to-resign/ https://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-agrees-to-a-time-limited-brexit-backstop-after-david-davis-threatens-to-resign/#respond Thu, 07 Jun 2018 12:30:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theresa-may-agrees-to-a-time-limited-brexit-backstop-after-david-davis-threatens-to-resign/ theresa may norway brexit

  • Downing Street has published the details of a “backstop” proposal to avoid a hard Irish border after Brexit.
  • The “backstop” is an emergency measure which would ensure no hard border emerges between Northern Ireland and Ireland.
  • Brexit secretary David Davis had two long meetings with the prime minister this morning after allies made it clear he was threatening to resign over plans to allow the backstop to be unlimited.

LONDON — Theresa May has agreed to keep Britain tied to EU customs rules for a “time limited” period after Brexit, following threats by her Brexit Secretary David Davis to resign.

The government on Thursday published detailed plans for a so-called “temporary customs arrangement” with the EU. It would temporarily align the UK with the EU customs union when the Brexit transition period ends in December 2020, taking effect if both sides failed to reach a customs agreement before then.

Ukraine finance minister says he was told to support corruption or resign https://briefnews.eu/ukraine-finance-minister-says-he-was-told-to-support-corruption-or-resign/ https://briefnews.eu/ukraine-finance-minister-says-he-was-told-to-support-corruption-or-resign/#respond Wed, 06 Jun 2018 17:31:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ukraine-finance-minister-says-he-was-told-to-support-corruption-or-resign/ At the time when Kiev is seeking to get another tranche of the stalled $ 17.5 billion aid from the IMF, Ukraine’s Finance Minister Aleksandr Danylyuk is accusing Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman of corruption.

Danylyuk asserts that Groysman gave him a choice of supporting “political corruption” or quitting after the latter officially asked the parliament to sack the finance minister.

The two ministers have a long history of complicated relations – after Groysman rejected Danylyuk’s candidate for deputy minister in charge of tax policy, Danylyuk accused him of backing candidates from the inner circle of President Petro Poroshenko.

According to Danylyuk, he was pushed to back spending programs for socio-economic development in Ukraine’s regions. “Translated into human language, it is the distribution of money to the projects of… lawmakers. This – political corruption – is known by people as ‘buckwheat,’” he said. “Buckwheat” means bribing voters with food or other goods during an election campaign. Ukraine will hold presidential and parliamentary elections in 2019.

Their brawl comes ahead of crucial negotiations between Ukraine and the IMF. Kiev has received no money from the IMF since April 2017, which it needs to curb ballooning debt. Ukraine is due to repay $ 15 billion of debt between now and the end of 2020.

Groysman has rejected the allegations. “The dissemination of distorted information among our international partners on the eve of important negotiations with the EU could jeopardize their results,” he wrote on Facebook.

Boris Johnson should resign for misleading public over Skripal, John Wight tells RT (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/boris-johnson-should-resign-for-misleading-public-over-skripal-john-wight-tells-rt-video/ https://briefnews.eu/boris-johnson-should-resign-for-misleading-public-over-skripal-john-wight-tells-rt-video/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2018 16:16:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/boris-johnson-should-resign-for-misleading-public-over-skripal-john-wight-tells-rt-video/

Boris Johnson should be sacked as Britain’s foreign secretary over his response to the Skripal poisoning, political commentator John Wight told RT.

Gaffe-prone Johnson is being accused of misleading the public after he stated he had been told in “categorical” terms by Porton Down scientists that there was “no doubt” Russia was the source of the nerve agent used in the Salisbury poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia. It follows the UK defense laboratory at Porton Down, which is on the outskirts of Salisbury, announcing on Tuesday that it has been unable to confirm the “precise source” of the Novichok nerve agent that was used in the incident.

The Foreign Office has now been forced to admit that it deleted a tweet dating back to March 22, which again contained claims of Porton Down having proof of Russia’s involvement.

Speaking to RT from Edinburgh, Wight noted that while Johnson did not hold back from squarely blaming Russia over the attack, he has now gone “conspicuously quiet.”

“It’s all gone quiet where Boris Johnson and [Defence Secretary] Gavin Williamson are concerned,” Wight said. They are now trying to perpetuate the idea that “this change [Porton Down announcement] is nothing, but in fact this change is everything,” he said.

“And one of the things that should change or should’ve changed by now is the employment status of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. He should have fallen on his sword long before now and if we’d had a fourth estate worthy of the category of independent media they would have been clamoring for his resignation.

“But as it is they’ve been complicit, if not key, in shaping this anti-Russia narrative, the weaponing-up of 19th century Russophobic tropes and this mass hysteria, up to and including war fever. This has brought the entire media and political establishment into disrepute.”

Johnson’s approach was criticized by members of the opposition, including Diane Abbott, the shadow home secretary, who said: “It seems Boris Johnson misled the public when he claimed that Porton Down officials confirmed to him that Russia was the source of the nerve agent used in the Salisbury attack.

“Those officials have made it clear they cannot identify its source, and are not able to definitively say it came from Russia or elsewhere,” she said, according to the Independent.

“Boris Johnson is supposed to represent Britain on the world stage, but time and again he has shown he is unable to do so responsibly.”

Black-cab rapist will stay behind bars, court orders as Parole Board head forced to resign https://briefnews.eu/black-cab-rapist-will-stay-behind-bars-court-orders-as-parole-board-head-forced-to-resign/ https://briefnews.eu/black-cab-rapist-will-stay-behind-bars-court-orders-as-parole-board-head-forced-to-resign/#respond Wed, 28 Mar 2018 10:11:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/black-cab-rapist-will-stay-behind-bars-court-orders-as-parole-board-head-forced-to-resign/ The black-cab rapist will remain behind bars after two victims fought the Parole Board’s decision to release him, and won the landmark case. As a result, Chairman of the Parole Board Nick Hardwick has been forced to resign.

Three judges gave their ruling against the Parole Board on Wednesday morning. The decision follows a two-day hearing, in which legal representatives for black-cab rapist John Worboys’ two victims argued that the release of the violent sex offender was “irrational.”

The victims who brought the case against the Parole Board said that something went “badly wrong” with their decision to free the sex attacker. They believe the board should have considered the “critical evidence” of “wider allegations” against Worboys.

The 60-year-old serial rapist will remain behind bars; a victory for the women he attacked on a rape spree that spanned from 2002 to 2008, when he was finally caught.

Three judges gave their ruling on the landmark action against the Parole Board at the High Court in London on Wednesday morning.

Worboys was jailed indefinitely in 2009 with a minimum term of eight years after he was found guilty of 19 offences against 12 victims. Charges included rape, sexual assault and drugging. He has served 10 years of his indeterminate sentence, which includes remand time.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also launched an action to challenge the Parole Board over its decision to release Worboys. Khan’s decision to intervene in the high-profile case came days after Worboys’ two victims kicked off a crowdfunding campaign to fund the legal challenge against the Parole Board.

In January, Khan released a statement slamming the Parole Board for their decision. “It was an astonishing and deeply concerning decision that simply cannot go unchallenged,” the mayor said. “For victims, and all Londoners, it must be properly scrutinized in the courts. The chair of the Parole Board has welcomed this scrutiny.

“I will always put the safety of Londoners, and the needs of victims, first – which is why I instructed leading counsel to begin this process last week. Londoners need to know that those in authority are doing everything they can to keep them safe and that means keeping dangerous individuals off our streets.”

Calls for authorities to resign as hundreds rally in Kemerovo, Russia after deadly mall inferno https://briefnews.eu/calls-for-authorities-to-resign-as-hundreds-rally-in-kemerovo-russia-after-deadly-mall-inferno/ https://briefnews.eu/calls-for-authorities-to-resign-as-hundreds-rally-in-kemerovo-russia-after-deadly-mall-inferno/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 07:20:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/calls-for-authorities-to-resign-as-hundreds-rally-in-kemerovo-russia-after-deadly-mall-inferno/

Traumatized locals have taken to the streets in the Siberian city of Kemerovo. Many are calling for the resignation of authorities after a fire in a shopping mall left dozens dead, including many children.

On Tuesday morning, hundreds of people came to the regional administration headquarters after a massive fire at the Winter Cherry Shopping Center claimed the lives of at least 64 people. The demonstrators commemorated the victims but also vented their anger at the authorities, demanding punishment for those responsible for the tragedy.

Locals were heard chanting “truth” and “murderers” during the rally. Some social media reports claim the death toll is much higher than the 64 already announced. Local authorities, however, dismissed the allegations. Kemerovo Mayor Ilya Serdyuk suggested visiting a local mortuary to debunk the rumors.

Arsene Wenger to resign TONIGHT? Could Arsenal boss walk after Carabao Cup humiliation? https://briefnews.eu/arsene-wenger-to-resign-tonight-could-arsenal-boss-walk-after-carabao-cup-humiliation/ https://briefnews.eu/arsene-wenger-to-resign-tonight-could-arsenal-boss-walk-after-carabao-cup-humiliation/#respond Sun, 25 Feb 2018 20:10:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arsene-wenger-to-resign-tonight-could-arsenal-boss-walk-after-carabao-cup-humiliation/

Thousands of supporters were seen streaming out of Wembley early after their side were hammered 3-0 by Manchester City.

While hundreds of thousands more took to Twitter to demand the Frenchman resigns with immediate effect after the Wembley humiliation.

Despite the pleas from fans, it seems unlikely.

Wenger agreed a new two-year contract, extending his then 21-year reign at the club, last May.

It means he is under contract with the club until May 2019.

Despite the huge calls for him to go, Wenger will likely stick it out until the end of the season at least.

What could happen at the end of the season?

Well, Wenger would still be under contract but he has previously admitted his position will be reviewed when the campaign is over.

Speaking at the club’s AGM in October, Wenger said: “I want to see what the board thinks of my performance.

“After that we decide where we go from there. My desire has always been to respect my contracts, but that is what I meant.”

What are the pundits saying after Arsenal’s Carabao Cup disaster?

The reaction has been, unsurprisingly, negative. Gary Neville went into a full-on rant at Arsene Wenger’s men live on air with Granit Xhaka, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey getting the brunt of his criticism.

He said: “Look at Ramsey walking, he’s walking. Xhaka’s walking. Mesut Ozil is walking.

“Don’t walk at Wembley. Don’t walk on a football pitch. It’s impossible. Run.

“Look at Xhaka and Ramsey walking back, they are central midfield players.

“Forget Arsenal, I’ll come into them in a minute as they’re a disgrace.

“A minute before that goal I mentioned the walking of the Arsenal payers and the retreating runs of Ramsey and Xhaka.

“They are an absolute disgrace they are, walking on a football pitch at Wembley, giving up. Spineless.

“This is a dark, dark day. The team have just not shown up.

“There’s nothing I’ve liked about this Arsenal performance – not one single thing.”
