Luxury hotels now offer a range of wellness treatments that go far beyond your typical facial or massage, but the Four Seasons "resident healer" program takes the trend to the next level.
The hotel's spa in downtown Manhattan offers appointments catered to an individual's "spiritual awareness and personal enlightenment," ranging from a $ 380 astrology reading to a $ 485 crystal healing session.
Over the course of an hour, I was hypnotized by one of the hotel's resident healers with a combination of visualization, manifestation, and mindfulness exercises. The session put me into a semi-trance that left me feeling more confident and relaxed.
For $ 285, the session lived up to its advertised promise of providing "clarity and emotional release" — plus access to the spa's amenities, including the sauna and steam room. In the future, I'd choose the unique experience over spending the same amount of money on a traditional spa treatment like a massage or facial.
Hannah Towey/Insider
Prior to my session with Nicole Hernandez, also known as "the traveling hypnotist," the only experience I'd had with hypnotism was a disappointing stage performance in high school. I didn't fall into the trance that made my peers dance awkwardly and fall asleep, so I was escorted off the stage.
I could tell this would be a completely different kind of hypnotism. Nicole felt more like a professional psychologist than a wacky stage guru, despite references to past lives and a fair amount of mindfulness buzz words.
She explained that everybody has different levels of susceptibility to hypnosis: movies, reading books, daydreaming — these are all different ways we hypnotize our brains without realizing it. People who don't frequently seek out those escapes may be harder to coach into a trance, she said.
Nicole Hernandez / The Traveling Hypnotist
After Nicole explained what to expect, we had a 20-minute conversation about any issues I'd like to tackle. Officially a year out of college, I wanted to focus on taking the next step in my career and improving my relationships as I transition into full-on adulthood. We discussed my value system and the things that are most important to me. This part felt like therapy but with more specific action items.
From there, Nicole began our first visualization exercise, which I can only describe as trippy. She guided me through "expanding my peripheral vision" as far as possible while focusing on a single spot on the wall, which felt like my eyes were a camera zooming out. Afterward, I felt strangely relaxed, a sensation Nicole credited to our brains only being able to handle so much visual stimulus. When you intentionally overload it, everything else shuts down.
With my inner eye officially open, Nicole proceeded to have me visualize myself on the other side of the room "wearing" the issues we discussed, taking the form of a backpack filled with rocks. Then, I had to visualize taking the backpack off and seeing how I felt without the weight.

As the projection of myself ran around and danced, Nicole asked me what else she (I?) needed. I hadn't eaten lunch yet, so I opted to feed imaginary-me steak and french fries, an answer that Nicole did her best to take seriously while we both laughed.
After feeding my projection, Nicole instructed me to open the backpack and see if there were still rocks inside, to which I responded, "well, I'm making this up (duh) … but now it's just filled with paper." Imaginary-me then put the bag back on and found the weight much lighter than when we started.
Next, I was instructed to have her walk closer to me until our "energy merged." At this point, I was definitely in some kind of a trance and experienced an emotional release. The exercise left me feeling lighter and happier afterward (and craving steak and french fries).
Hannah Towey/Insider
One of the crazier things was that the entire exercise only seemed to last 10 minutes, when it was actually closer to 30. Nicole said this is super common, and that four-hour hypnosis sessions can go by in a minute.
Three days later, I've found myself returning to the backpack-filled-with-rocks image when I've felt overwhelmed or stressed, thinking to myself: "It's not rocks! It's just paper!" And maybe that's just pretending life's problems aren't there instead of fixing them, but hey, we'll see how it goes.

]]>Is Patience, Colo. finally rid of its lanky E.T.? Fat chance.
In Wednesday’s season finale of Resident Alien, Harry was forced to finally decide whether to carry out his initial plan of destroying mankind. With his device intact and ready to annihilate, Harry’s blips of humanity tugged at his heartstrings, and thanks in part to a plea from Asta, Harry opted to leave Earth just as he found it. But after blasting off into space, he discovered little Max tucked away in his spaceship cabin. Looks like Harry just booked a flight back to Colorado, after all.
Below, TVLine talks to Resident Alien creator/EP Chris Sheridan about that heartfelt finale, including Harry and Asta’s friendship, the “broken and struggling” D’Arcy, and of course, his hopes and ideas for Season 2.
TVLINE | First of all, congratulations on the Season 2 renewal!
CHRIS SHERIDAN | Thank you! I knew the show was doing well, but it’s always nice to get confirmation. The cast was beyond thrilled to find out it was coming back.
TVLINE | In the finale, Asta convinces Harry to not use the device, using their friendship and connection as her argument. Is Harry afraid of using it because he knows it could kill him, too? Or was it really just Asta’s plea that swayed him?
SHERIDAN | I think it’s love for Asta. At the very end, he has a plan. He could do it and survive. His plan is to get up in the ship, drop [the device] and take off. He’ll be fine and everyone will be wiped out. There’s a friendship love story between Asta and Harry [about] two people who, through getting to know each other and slowly gaining trust with one another, are able to bring their walls down a little bit. For the first time in Episode 10, he starts to realize what love is all about, and these feelings, this closeness he has towards Asta as a friend, are starting to creep into him. He’s going through all of the emotions we go through when someone we care about rejects us. I think he feels close enough to Asta at the end that he would still love to kill everybody. But if it means killing her, then he just can’t bring himself to do it.
TVLINE | I might be a total pessimist here, but if I was trying to convince an alien to not kill mankind, I would probably tell it exactly what I think it wants to hear. Is Asta really OK with everything that’s transpired, or is she still secretly conflicted about Harry?
SHERIDAN | That’s very astute. I think you’re exactly right. I think it’s both. Look, I think she cares about him. In the moment, yeah, this guy killed this [then]-innocent guy Harry Vanderspeigel, and that’s horrible. She’s getting drawn into this alien that looks human and maybe is human, and realizes, “Oh no, this is a monster. What am I doing? I can’t be friends with this person.” There is part of her that sees that he’s changed, but she’s also very well aware that she’s got to stop him from doing this. I don’t think she’s being manipulative. I think there is honesty in what she says to him, but at the same time, she is doing everything she can to keep him from killing everybody. I would put it at 60/40 — because I’m less of a pessimist than you, Nick — that she does truly believe he can change and is a different person than he was when he first got here.
TVLINE | I can get behind those odds! We also learned that the real Harry killed Sam Hodges. Come Season 2, will that information come to light? And will we find out a motive?
SHERIDAN | It’s a good question. When I first set out to adapt this book into a TV show, my concept was to have two different stories going through the series. One is the alien storyline of Harry coming down to kill everybody and slowly becoming human. But I also wanted a town story going through this world as well, where even if there was no alien, you’d want to watch the show anyway [for] the three-dimensional characters, and Asta and D’Arcy’s relationship, and Asta’s bad marriage with Jimmy, and the baby. To me, the town story in the first season was, “Who killed Sam Hodges?” And I always thought that, in the second season, the town story would be: “Why?” What we will discover in the second season is what was going on with the real Harry Vanderspeigel. Why did he leave New York? What was the relationship between the real Harry and people in town, and what led him to kill Sam.
TVLINE | Poor D’Arcy seems so lost in the finale. What’s in store for her next season?
SHERIDAN | I’m actually going to spend some time talking to Alice Wetterlund about the character. We spent some time last season talking about this wonderful, broken human being that Alice plays so incredibly well. D’Arcy’s a small-town hero who went and made something of herself at the Olympics, and was revered by everybody. But what is it like to be that person and flame out— only to end up back where you started? I think D’Arcy is at this turning point in her life where she feels she could’ve been something and could’ve been happy if things went a certain way, but things didn’t go that way and she’s sort of given up. She has to figure out what her life is and what her true happiness is. As she says to Ben, she just wants to matter, like we all do. She wants to be important and when she finally leaves this earth, she wants to leave having done something.
TVLINE | “True strength comes from choosing not to kill. Maybe being truly human is about choosing to love instead.” That line is so poignant for today. Would you say that’s the series’ primary theme?
SHERIDAN | All the messages I wanted to put out there revolve around the thought of love and acceptance and connection… taking care of each other and not fighting each other. Harry came down to this planet with a concept in his head of what he thought he knew about humans — and to be honest, it’s what a lot of us think about each other. It’s this pessimistic view [of] me or them. It wasn’t until Harry got here and made these friendships where he started the journey into realizing that there’s more to humans, and when humans work together there’s nothing they can’t do.
TVLINE | Wrapping up, are there any other teases you can share about next season? Please tell me you’ve figured out another way to have Corey Reynolds sing again?
SHERIDAN | [Laughs] Oh, he’s amazing. He’s a Broadway singer. He’s incredible. My fear was that he was going to be too good of a singer for a small-town sheriff, but I would like to explore his singing some more. A sheriff that sings like that, there’s a backstory there somewhere. Maybe that was his passion growing up and he didn’t do it because his dad and his grandfather were cops? We’re going to get into Mike’s backstory more. What was really the reason he brought his dad to Colorado? There’s something that happened to him in D.C. as a cop that made him run. Everyone in Patience is running from something. I want to explore that a bit more and make his character a little more three dimensional, where he’s not just searching for the murderer.
I’d also love to be able to have Terry O’Quinn back. Maybe that storyline’s not done. He’s searching for something and it’s possible the only one who has the answers is Harry Vanderspeigle. I’m just at the beginning stages now of trying to figure out the next season. I have some cool ideas, so I’m excited to get into it.

As an alien hell-bent on destroying mankind, Harry probably never expected his No. 1 nemesis on earth would be a pint-sized grade schooler.
On Wednesday’s episode of Resident Alien, Max and Harry’s rivalry came to a head, leading to the formation of a mutually beneficial truce between the two enemies. After Max admitted to his parents that he stole Harry’s keys to break into the doctor’s house — which, of course, landed him in some boiling hot water with mom, dad and law enforcement — the boy and his friend Sahar made Harry an offer he couldn’t refuse: If Harry tells Max’s parents that the kid isn’t crazy, Max will stop telling everyone Harry’s an alien.
Though the two agreeable parties sealed the deal with a handshake, series creator/EP Chris Sheridan assures TVLine that their adversarial relationship is far from over.
“I don’t want them to be friends,” says Sheridan. “Harry is a child. He’s immature, if not more immature than Max is, and Alan [Tudyk] plays it so beautifully. It’s something we tapped into early on and realized there’s an energy to. It’s a dynamic I want to keep up as the show moves forward.”
Thus far, Max remains the only Patience, Colorado resident who can see Harry for what he truly is: a bug-eyed alien with razor-sharp teeth and a massive dome. As Harry broke down in the episode, “some humans are genetically more in tune to the frequency of other dimensions, so they can see beyond my molecular reconstruction.”
“Harry’s opinion at the beginning of the show is, ‘It’s very simple. I’ll just kill him. I don’t understand what the problem is?’” says Sheridan. “That’s his mission, to quiet the kid, but the kid doesn’t go away so easily. It was fun for a few episodes having Harry try to do away with him, but I knew he couldn’t try to do that forever.”
With the threat of his parents sending him away hanging over Max’s head, the two characters realized they both needed something from one another, ultimately leading to the aforementioned alliance. But will this truce hold strong, or is it just a temporary fix to their problems?
Teases Sheridan: “They’ll never be best friends, and they’ll always be somewhat antagonistic with each other. I think that’s where a lot of the fun comes from.”

Crash-landing on a foreign planet must be incredibly difficult for an extraterrestrial to handle, but Resident Alien‘s resident alien isn’t the only one dealing with some massive baggage.
While Harry continued learning how to pass as human by studying Anne Hathaway photos and brushing his face instead of his teeth (he’s a work in progress, that one), it was nurse Asta Twelvetrees (Sara Tomko) who showed her vulnerable side on Wednesday’s episode. As she continued to mourn the late Dr. Sam Hodges, she revealed the truth behind her relationship with her dad, Dan, allowing Harry the chance to further explore his newfound empathy, as unnatural as it may seem to him. (Though it sure looks like he has a better grasp of human emotion than dental hygiene.)
While Asta was ultimately adopted by her dad as a child, it was Hodges who was “like a father to Asta,” Tomko tells TVLine. Yet still, the love she experienced from Hodges and her community couldn’t prevent feelings of loneliness from creeping in, which led her down a questionable path of bad decisions and even worse men.
“She feels mostly isolated and doesn’t quite know where she fits in,” says Tomko. “It’s very internal, a lot of insecurities and vulnerabilities. We see her stumbling out of this abusive relationship, and then this weird guy comes in the day after she discovered her father figure and friend dead. That is so deep. And [Harry] just comes in and is like, ‘This is awesome!’ It is so offensive! There are so many reasons for her to hate Harry, and yet he has something that she’s never experienced before with any man, and that’s this ability to be brutally honest.”
Despite the fact that she should run away screaming from Harry, the two forge an early friendship in the series’ first couple episodes, bonding over their mutual feelings of isolation.
“There’s a familiarity she has with him. He looks and acts like an outsider, and that’s a mirror reflection of how Asta feels,” says Tomko. “It’s a beautiful, relatable theme that a lot of people will be able to appreciate and respect… that feeling of ‘even when I’m surrounded by so much love, I feel like I don’t fit in.’ And then finding someone you feel like you fit in with? That’s a pretty incredible feeling.”
Adds creator and EP Chris Sheridan: “Even though Asta was raised in a reservation, she feels a bit like an outsider. And she has other issues she’s been going through, with a baby she had to put up for adoption when she was 16, and her horrible abusive marriage. Through all the hard times, she always had Sam to talk to. Without him there anymore, she’s going to have to face these things head-on.”
Unfortunately for Asta, things aren’t about to lighten up anytime soon. Tomko teases that Asta will have yet another bump in the road come Episode 5, but until then, viewers can continue snacking on Harry’s journey, as he explores “the inner workings of how to feel these new feelings he’s never felt before.” As for the rest of Asta’s Season 1 arc, it’s bound to get even messier.
“There is some clarity and closure for Asta in some of her storyline and relationships, but not much, so it’s a little messy from beginning to end,” notes the actress. “But I will say there’s a light at the end of her tunnel. She’s so good at standing up for others, but you start to see her really learn how to stand up for herself.”

Over the past two and a half decades, the brother and sister have always been there for one another, with Sonia helping the father-of-one when his son Sami Jackson (Shiven Shankar) paid a visit to the Square last year.
Robbie was worried his ex-girlfriend Nita Mistry (Bindya Solanki) was going to cut his contact with the youngster after he failed to put him back on a plane to India on the agreed date he would return to his mother.
His sister managed to make him see sense and as a result, his relationship with his son got to continue, with the father-of-one leaving last September after the child was involved in an accident off-screen.
The former bin man hasn’t been seen since, but actor Dean, 42, has hinted his alter-ego will be making a return in the future.

Conrad Hawkins might be out of a job, but he’s not letting unemployment keep him down. (In fact, he’s practically floating!)
TVLine has an exclusive first look at The Resident‘s winter premiere, which will find Matt Czuchry’s titular doc figuring out his next step after being terminated from Chastain Park.
During the episode, Conrad distracts himself from his firing by accompanying a muscular dystrophy patient on a zero gravity adventure. But if the photo below is any indication, Conrad’s afternoon of weightlessness will take a worrying turn, as another participant in the activity seems to need medical attention.
According to executive producer Todd Harthan, Conrad will be in “new territory” in the wake of his firing, which came down after he broke Chastain’s rule regarding suicidal transplant patients.
“Initially, [Conrad] does look like he’s determined, but when he steps outside the walls of Chastain, it dawns on him that he’s alone,” Harthan previously told TVLine. “We’re going to live in that space — not just for the opening minutes, but for some episodes to come. We don’t want to rush through this part of Conrad’s struggle.”
Elsewhere in the Fox drama’s return (Jan. 7, 8/7c), new chief of surgery Dr. Cain puts the doctors on a commission-based pay system, while Mina struggles to take care of Adaku’s baby and Dr. Bell’s supplement company gets its big break.

Mary (played by Patti Claire) has been keeping herself busy looking after Tyrone Dobbs’ (Halsall) daughter alongside her duties at the florist after Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and his teenager children left Coronation Street a couple of months ago.
Since her son Jude Appleton (Paddy Wallace), his wife Angie Appleton (Victoria Ekanoye) and their son George left the ITV soap earlier this year, Mary has been focussed on making the Alahan home a happy one.
When Dev and his teenage daughter Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) return to Weatherfield next week however, it seems the household won’t be peaceful anytime soon as the shipowner’s daughter hides a heartbreaking secret.
Self-conscious about her appearance and after spending time in India with her family, Asha will begin using skin lightening cream on herself which lets her to push those closet to her away, including Mary.
Asha’s ordeal was first reported earlier this year, with the ITV soap set to explore the impact skin bleaching products can have on its users, working with the British Skin Foundation to portray the reality of the situation for many young people.
This is one of the first big storyline’s for Asha star Tanisha Gorey, 17, who will be put in the spotlight as her character becomes fixated on altering her appearance.
Speaking about the impact of Asha’ behaviour on her nearest and dearest, Tanisha said in a statement released by ITV: “She’s very hostile with both Dev and Mary, insisting they let her do her own thing.
“Asha lost her mum a long time ago and Dev tries to take on both roles.
“Mary does her best to step in, but for Asha they’re too far removed from what she feels she’s going through and she just wants her own freedom now she’s getting a bit older.”
Of Asha beginning to reject the likes of Mary who have been a pivotal figure in her life, the soap star explained: “Asha is close to Mary but there’s too much of an age gap there.”
READ MORE: Coronation Street spoilers: Alina Pop returns for shock Seb Franklin exit plot?
Tanisha continued: “She feels like more of a grandmother figure and she can’t open up to her about how she’s feeling.”
Mary would be heartbroken if she ever thought those she cared for couldn’t come to her with their problems, so will Asha’s reluctance to open up leave the florist at a loose end?
Asha’s secret is almost uncovered in upcoming episodes, as after an afternoon out with Mary in which she keeps a lid on her skin lightening regime, the contents of her bag spill out on the floor.
Dev will help Asha to recollect her belongings but the teenager manages to grasp the skin lightning cream just in time before heading upstairs to apply the contents to her body.
The coming weeks and months will see Asha turn to online outlets to source the skin bleaching products, but will anyone notice the extremes the teenager is going to in order to change her appearance?
Speaking about being given the storyline, Tanisha commented: “I knew nothing about these skin lightening creams really, I’d heard it happened but I had no idea it was as common as it actually is.
“I’ve tried to find out a lot more about the issue and now I’m really excited to try and get the message across that this is something young girls are turning to as they struggle with their self esteem.
“I want to make sure I do it justice because if you’re going to cover such a serious issue, which is not shown a lot, then you need to do it in the right way.”
Also coming up on the cobbles later in the year, the residents of Weatherfield will come together to celebrate Ken Barlow’s (William Roache) eightieth birthday.
As part of the celebrations, Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) will be making a guest appearance three years after her exit from the show.
Coronation Street continues Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.

Randolph Bell might be the best surgeon at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital, but Conrad Hawkins will be the one twisting the knife on Monday’s episode of The Resident.
TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at the hour (Fox, 8/7c), in which Conrad tasks Dr. Bell to task for staying in business with QuoVadis, especially after one of the company’s devices nearly stopped Henry Barnett’s young heart for good.
In the video above, Bell tries to assure Conrad that he’s putting patients ahead of profits — until he’s interrupted by a phone call that suggests otherwise.
Last month, series co-creator Amy Holden Jones teased that The Resident‘s QuoVadis storyline “will be taken care of before the end of this season,” though she warned that “everybody is in danger” as the Chastain Park docs attempt to take down Gordon Page’s company.
Elsewhere in Monday’s episode, Bell, AJ and Conrad will work to save the life of Simon, Chastain Park’s favorite custodian (played by Pitch‘s Dan Lauria). Meanwhile, one of Alec’s former patients ends up in the emergency room, prompting Alec to question if he made the right choice to leave his old practice for Nic’s clinic.
