The group was angry over his opposition to the split from the Russian Orthodox Church.

Demonstrators descended on the residence of Metropolitan Ephraim in Kryvyi Rih on Saturday, according to Ukrainian Orthodox Church website. The statement described the group, comprised of no more than 20 people judging by the video filmed by a local journalist, as “provocateurs” who “tried to break the door of the building” and “shouted insults” at the ruling bishop of Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol eparchy.

Some representatives of the Ukrainian Church wanted it to split from the Moscow Patriarchate (Russian Orthodox Church), of which it has been part of for centuries. The move towards independence, known as autocephaly, was greenlighted by the Constantinople Patriarchate prompting a major schism in the Modern Orthodox world and increasing tensions among the believers.

The demonstrators were holding placards demanding Ephraim to accept a religious document called Tomos that grants independence to the Ukrainian Church. The bishop was among many warning against the move and pledging support for the canonical church of the country, that is the one that accepts Moscow’s authority.

Local police were alerted to the violent actions, but seemingly nothing changed when they arrived at the site as bangs on the doors were still heard. The church said the officers were reluctant to stop the participants from “damaging” the building and “shouting out calls inciting religious hatred.”

Not all the people at the event were there to show their position on religious issues, however. A man calling himself a member of far-right group ‘Right Sector’ was spotted strolling around the residence. He told a journalist that he was not a “religious man,” but still wants the creation of the independent church in the country. Another participant said that he was not really aware about the situation, but calls for a “free Ukraine.”

A grenade-laden, medium-sized drone has targeted the residence of the top security official of Mexico’s Baja California state. Luckily for the residents, the explosives were deactivated and failed to detonate.

State police stationed at Gerardo Sosa Olachea’s house in Tecate, Mexico, spotted two drones circling around the state public security minister’s residence on Tuesday morning. One of the drones then fell on the terrace.

Once the officers rushed to the unmanned aerial vehicle they discovered two grenades duct-taped to it. The drone was also equipped with an audio and video system.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday about the incident, Sosa noted that the explosives had been deactivated, so the stunt was likely made to intimidate him, rather than to kill. He attributed the scare to drug lords because of “the major seizures of drugs and arms and arrests of criminals” overseen by his ministry.

In the meanwhile, the National Defense Secretariat continues with its investigation into the possible origin of the explosives, while police are searching for the owners of the drone.

An unknown assailant was shot dead as he attacked a guard outside the Iranian ambassador’s residence in Vienna, Austria, local police have confirmed.

“An unknown attacker armed with a knife has been shot dead by a guard from the Federal Armed Forces,” a police tweet said. The assault happened round midnight local time on Sunday. The guard was also injured in the incident and is now in hospital. The motive of the attack is not clear yet, law enforcement added.

The perpetrator is a 26-year-old Austrian citizen, local police said in statement. 

The 23-year-old guard was stabbed several times, but only suffered minor injuries thanks to a stab-proof vest. He initially used pepper spray to tackle the attacker. Later the two engaged in a tussle on the ground, during which the officer reached for his service weapon and fired several shots.

Authorities ordered heightened security measures at diplomatic missions in Vienna, according to local media. It is not clear if the ambassador was inside the building at the time of the attack.

Last week, four people, including a teenage girl, were seriously injured in two separate attacks in the Austrian capital. The perpetrator in one of the incidents was described as “uninhibited and psychotic,” according to witnesses.
