Leeds made only £7million in television income in 2017 when they pull in more viewers than many Premier League clubs who receive a minimum £100m-a-year and media mogul Radrizzani insists is demanding change. And 10 years after the rebellion that almost brought down Premier League overlord Richard Scudamore, the Elland Road chief is preparing fresh mutiny. He said: “We should concede that a club like Leeds United is watched by 500,000 to 600,000 people live on Sky, but getting only £2.5 million (of their TV deal with clubs). “We are actually penalised because we are on TV more than 20 times, so maybe we should reconsider the system because it doesn’t work. “We are creating a show that is high interest for everyone, yet we lose money. “I think other chairmen would love to open a discussion because the time is getting ready to consider what to do to move forward.” Asked if he had already held meetings with other club owners to plot a course for revolt, Radrizzani – owner of emerging TV rights contenders Eleven Sports – warned: “No, it’s just my belief, you should ask other clubs. “But I’m sharing these (ideas) with other chairmen, and they agree. “The Championship model should be reconsidered because it is not sustainable – there are huge gaps between the clubs coming down with parachute payments and other teams on lower budgets. “Maybe they need to consider another way to create value, Premier League 2 or something, that is sustainable even for the clubs who are not promoted.” Radrizzani, speaking at the Leaders Sport summit at Stamford Bridge, claimed Leeds United had doubled in market value since he paid £45 million to buy the club from excitable predecessor Massimo Cellino 17 months ago. And he acclaimed the impact of new manager Marcelo Bielsa, whose charisma has given fans a standard-bearer to rally round the White Rose standard. He said: “I think we have progressed in terms of everything – management, facilities and the sporting side is doing better – so the big impression is that the club is catching up to be a modern club. “Soon, if not this season then maybe next year, we will be ready to go in the right direction for promotion. “After last year, I really wanted to have a manager to give us strong leadership, to be a catalyst for the whole club and the players. “I thought we needed to change the culture of the entire club and very quickly he has achieved this objective, so I am very happy with that.” Bielsa has presided over just one defeat in 12 League games, leaving Leeds just two points off the Championship peak. TRADITIONALLY, to count as an oil power a country had to be a big producer of the black stuff. China is the world’s biggest importer but still wants to break into that exclusive club. On March 26th it launched a crude futures contract in a bid to gain more clout in the global market. Some think that, if successful, the yuan could start to displace the dollar in oil trading. For now, though, that is fanciful. A previous attempt by China to introduce oil futures, in the early 1990s, failed because of unstable pricing. This time regulators prepared methodically. To ward off speculators, notorious in Chinese markets, they made the storage of oil very expensive. Volumes were light in the first few days of trading—less than a tenth of the averages for similar contracts in New York and London. But all went smoothly. It was a good, if modest, start.
China has two goals. The basic one is to help its companies hedge against volatility. Chinese refiners and traders have struggled to…

A federal judge in California has rejected Disney’s effort to stop Redbox from reselling download codes of popular Disney titles like Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and the latest Star Wars movies.
Judge Dean Pregerson’s Tuesday ruling invoked the little-used doctrine of copyright misuse, which holds that a copyright holder loses the right to enforce a copyright if the copyright is being abused. Pregerson faulted Disney for tying digital download codes to physical ownership of discs, a practice that he argued ran afoul of copyright’s first sale doctrine, which guarantees customers the right to resell used DVDs.
If the ruling were upheld on appeal, it would have sweeping implications. It could potentially force Hollywood studios to stop bundling digital download codes with physical DVDs and force video game companies to rethink their own practices.
]]>As she moves around this particular evening’s event, she talks development with community housing folks and political strategy with a pair of lawyers. When someone offers Trauss a chair (she’s eight months pregnant), it surprises no one who knows her that she replies “No,” rather forcefully.
Trauss, 35, is running as a moderate in a district that has gone to progressives in the past five supervisor races. But that’s not what sets her apart. Instead, in a city where local elections can get dirty, and a candidate’s history and connections matter, Trauss is a polarizing figure whose vision for reshaping San Francisco’s development makes some see red.

Trauss wants to build, build, build — as many new housing units as it takes to bring down the ghastly cost of rent. And she thinks the buildings should be primarily in high-income neighborhoods. “Where do we want people to live?” she asks, and then answers: “We don’t really want people to live in low-income areas because it displaces people and increases the cost.”
Her base is a fervent one — and includes many in the tech field who are similarly young, new to the area and frustrated by the cost of housing.
This strategy is part of the Yes in My Backyard, or YIMBY, platform — crafted by critics of the long-standing Not in My Backyard trend in neighborhoods that reject what they perceive as undesirable change, typically forcing development like housing projects into less affluent areas. YIMBY groups have sprung up across the U.S., but in San Francisco — the country’s most expensive city to rent an apartment — it galvanized a pro-building movement, of which Trauss has become the controversial face.
Trauss grew up in Philadelphia and studied philosophy at Temple University. She worked for a local neighborhood advisory committee and as a paralegal before earning a master’s in economics. In 2011, she moved to the Bay Area and taught high school and college math.
In her new home, she noticed how people resisted development, worried that it would bring the density of Manhattan to San Francisco without significantly reducing rental costs. Having left a city losing population and taxpayers, Trauss was frustrated by the stubborn reluctance to accommodate all the people who wanted to live in the city. “Where do you think public services come from?” she asks.
Disappointed by those she describes as “anti-building” folks, Trauss started organizing for more housing development in San Francisco. She would troll the comments sections of blogs and tell people to get off their computers and into planning meetings. After Trauss founded SFBARF in 2014, she was instrumental in launching YIMBY, which consists of a political action committee, an advocacy organization and a nonprofit that sues communities for not building enough housing. In July, YIMBY won its first court case, forcing the city of Berkeley to approve a three-unit building opposed by neighbors who argued its residents would take their parking spaces. Then Trauss dived into local politics.
Her base is a fervent one — and includes many in the tech field who are similarly young, new to the area and frustrated by the cost of housing. Supporter Todd David, executive director of the San Francisco Housing Action Coalition, says Trauss recognizes that the housing shortage is also keeping the city from living up to its own message of tolerance and acceptance. “She’s probably the most honest politician I’ve ever met,” David says.
And yet that honesty, which can be a blunt weapon, isn’t an unqualified asset to her rookie campaign. “In larger races, you have all these peripherals. In this case it’s only Sonja Trauss on the ballot, and everything that entails, good and bad. It is about you,” says San Francisco political analyst David Latterman.
Trauss is known for being a straight shooter, but her outspokenness has landed her in dangerous territory. She tweeted in 2016 that “gentrification is what we call the revaluation of black land to its correct price”; in 2010, she blogged that low-income public housing tenants “usually can’t read or write.”

She says she regrets what she chalks up to internet sloppiness and then adds: “The worst thing about that is the phrase taken out of context really perpetuates stereotypes that I really do not believe in. It makes me sad and frustrated and I definitely feel very sorry for it.” Still, Trauss insists, minor scandals bubble up in every election, and that the district’s voters appreciate a candidate who speaks her mind and connects with them as a community member.
Her chief opponent, Matt Haney, has experience as an elected official on the San Francisco Board of Education. Haney is garnering support from some of the district’s progressive voters who believe the building boom is ruining the city’s character, but Trauss hopes his traditional credentials will work against him. She calls herself “a realistic candidate” who appeals to people ready for a supervisor “who’s just going to be frank about what’s going on.”
With the election still a year off, the race is in its early stages, and more candidates could emerge before voters head to the ballot box next November. In the meantime, Trauss will take a break from campaigning to have her baby. And if she succeeds in her quest for more affordable housing for San Francisco residents, it could mean more space for her and other growing families.

You know that old saying that if you give a person a fish, they’ll eat for a day, and if you teach them to fish, they’ll eat for a lifetime? It’s the perfect summary of just how important learning can be.
But what’s the best way to make sure you learn and don’t forget? After all, you can fish all day, but you won’t eat if your fish all jump out and wriggle back out of the boat.
Barbara Oakley, professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, has ransacked available scientific studies to narrow it down. In partnership with the University of California and neuroscientist Terrence Sejnowski, Oakley’s compiled the best of the best scientifically supported learning strategies into “Learning How to Learn,” the most popular class ever on Coursera. These are some of her top tips.
Great learning requires going back and forth between intense concentration (focused mode, using lots of familiar information or paths) and working in a subconscious or resting state (diffuse mode, using fewer, less familiar paths). One way to apply this is with the Pomodoro technique. Set a timer for 25 minutes and work with as much concentration as you can for that 25 minutes. Worry about the attention you’re dishing out, not on whether you finish everything or find the solution. At the end of the 25 minutes, take five minutes to have fun!
In your brain, nerve cells have small gaps (synapses) between them. Electrical impulses travel across these gaps, much like cars going over bridges. Repeating and practicing what you want to learn essentially builds a stronger bridge, so that it’s easier for the electrical impulses to move from cell to cell. Spaced repetition is the most efficient way to build the synaptic connections and learn fast. Bump this into overdrive by repeating your information or activity in different settings over time. This technique ensures that you don’t come to rely on external cues to recall or perform.
Procrastination is an avoidance technique whereby you try to get away from something you don’t like, or that causes you some kind of distress. But researchers have found that, if you just start what’s uncomfortable, your anxiety will fade over a few minutes. So if you’re overwhelmed by what’s in front of you, don’t avoid it. Just start with a small piece, let yourself calm down with that piece, and then keep going. The Pomodoro technique can be helpful here, because the act of starting the timer becomes routine and habitual, making it easier to get past your initial stress.
Chunking refers to creating a small neural pattern you can reactivate when needed. Over time, you add more and more chunks to create a neural network. In practical terms, this means taking in just a little bit of information at once and, over time, learning to string those bits into sequences or webs that are longer or more complicated. Make your first chunk the “big picture” or summary. For example, instead of just reading this article from top to bottom, scan it out for the title, headers, pictures, etc. to get the gist or summary first. Thengo after another chunk and dig for a little more detail. How far you need to chunk and drill down will depend on what you’re trying to learn and how complex it is, but the general process is always the same.
Intuition can be good in decision making, but learning and applying information in creative ways often requires you to dismantle the old mindsets intuition is built on. Take a second to move past your first reaction and explore alternate perspectives.
Most people who want to learn from a text just reread it over and over without taking time to test what they remember. If you pause and see how much you can recall after reading something, however, you give yourself a chance to build some associations between the content and what you already know. Additionally, during the reading process, you naturally turn what you read into a sort of mental movie, visualizing what’s on the page. Taking a break lets you replay and enhance this visualization. Rereading thus isn’t just about learning through sheer repetition. It’s about drilling down for more details that make the memory even more intense.
Some people, Oakley says, are like race cars. Their brains speed along, taking in and processing information fast. Others are like hikers. They struggle to finish quickly, but because they take their time assimilating information, they grab more details, don’t jump to conclusions, and often have a much deeper learning experience. If you know what kind of learner you are, you can pick learning strategies that feel natural to you and you don’t have to feel embarrassed or incompetent next to anyone else.
How people learn best might be somewhat predictable, but what you learn compared to someone else is not. Use these tips to unravel and express your best self. It is in this revelation and application of individuality that learning becomes truly priceless.

PARIS/WARSAW (Reuters) – While Britain toils over its messy divorce with the European Union, France’s president Emmanuel Macron is embarking on a drive to deepen the economic integration of a bloc he says needs to be more protective of its citizens.
The French leader this week embarks on a three-day tour of central and eastern Europe, where he will seek to win backers for his push to tighten labor rules over ‘posted’ workers, a sensitive issue that has exacerbated an east-west rift.
Days later, euro zone reforms, defense cooperation and immigration will be in focus when Macron hosts the leaders of Germany, Spain and Italy for talks, as he seeks to enhance France’s leadership in Europe.
Paris has long complained that central and eastern Europe gains an unfair advantage from the “social dumping” of cheap labor, arguing the posting of low-paid workers hurts local jobs and erodes labor protections in higher-wage member states.
Although posted workers make up less than 1 percent of the EU workforce, with many employed in the haulage and construction sectors, the issue has deepened a divide between the poor east and rich west.
Macron will visit Romania, Bulgaria and Austria, where he will also meet the leaders of Czech Republic and Slovakia, but is skipping Hungary and Poland, whose right-wing governments he has accused of spurning the bloc’s values.
An Elysee Palace source said Macron was visiting countries who were “the most attached to their European anchoring”.
The source dismissed suggestions that Macron is seeking to drive a wedge between central and eastern European countries staunchly opposed to reform and those that see scope for compromise.
“This is not about dividing in order to better rule,” the source said in a briefing to reporters earlier this month.

Macron’s election win has re-energized the EU’s Franco-German axis but in Poland and Hungary it has fanned fears of a “multi-speed” Europe that could mean reduced influence, financial support and economic competitiveness.
The 39-year-old leader will find a sympathetic ear in Austria, which borders four eastern European countries and where the ruling Social Democrats say an influx of workers from the east is weighing on wages.
The posted workers directive permits European companies to send employees to other EU states on contracts under which they only have to guarantee the minimum wage of the host country.
Macron has said a European Commission proposal that posted workers’ pay packets should include benefits in line with host country regulations and that their contracts be limited to two years does not go far enough.
Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic — known together as the Visegrad four — say the proposals go too far. They argue they should be allowed to compete on lower prices to catch up after decades of communist stagnation.
Estonia, which holds the EU’s rotating presidency, is due to table a new proposal in September.

Poland has accused Macron of double standards by advocating a closer Europe while seeking to erode competition in the single market. Two sources in the Polish government said it had tried to invite Macron to Warsaw as part of his trip.
“But we didn’t see much willingness,” said one of the sources.
Poland’s Deputy Infrastructure Minister Justyna Skrzydlo told Reuters the Warsaw government trusted in the “continued unity and solidarity of the Central Europe countries”.
“We believe that Central European states highlight competitiveness in the European economy,” she said. “We are utterly confident that it will endure in the future.”
Other countries have shown signs of being open to compromise and aligning themselves with an eventual new EU proposal.
“I am very much interested in regional cooperation within the Visegrad four, but Slovakia’s vital interest is the EU,” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Beyond the issue of posted workers, Macron is likely to be on a charm offensive to drum up support for proposed wider reforms to the European Union that include deeper defense cooperation, fiscal harmonization and a common budget for the euro zone.
His advisors say French diplomacy has long neglected central Europe.
“He wants to get started on Europe. The sooner he starts building these relationships, the more political capital he will accumulate to use at a later stage,” said Teneo Intelligence analyst Antonio Barroso.

President Donald Trump already had ample leeway to reshape the Federal Reserve, with Janet Yellen’s term as chair expiring early next year and two key slots on the central bank’s board left open after Republicans failed to bring President Barack Obama’s longstanding nominees to a vote.
Now, with the sudden resignation of Daniel Tarullo, Trump pretty much has free rein over the powerful US central bank.
Tarullo was the Fed’s point man on regulation, and his announcement came just days after the new administration announced it was ready to tear up the very post-financial-crisis rules that Tarullo, Fed officials, and other regulators have spent years debating and implementing.
Tarullo’s term was not due to expire until 2022. He could have, as The New York Times’ Binyamin Applebaum tweeted, stayed on to fight against the looming rollback.
But in the end, Tarullo was all too aware that as independent as the Fed likes to think of itself, it is ultimately accountable to Congress and, by the nature of appointments, the president. Why fight a losing battle and then have your name associated with the next financial blowup? One can forgive him for calling it quits after eight years.
US Federal Reserve
That battle will ultimately take place in the realm of politics, not policymaking, as indicated by the pushback Trump is getting from Democrats in addition to many Europeans, who fear deregulation in the US could destabilize their banking systems.
Trump has vowed to do a “big number” on Dodd-Frank, and he placed former Goldman Sachs president Gary Cohn and his recently confirmed Treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin, also a longtime Goldman banker, in charge of doing the dismantling.
On interest-rate policy, the Fed’s board also loses a publicly circumspect but vocal voice calling for a more dovish, pro-employment approach to policy, particularly with inflation hovering below the central bank’s target for most of the economic recovery.
The trouble of predicting what a Trump Fed would look like is the same problem with trying to predict anything Trump: It’s not really possible. It’s clear that one name, that of Kevin Warsh, a Republican former Fed governor, will cross Trump’s desk when he turns his attention to the issue of the Fed. It’s hard to imagine he has given it much consideration given all the other controversies that have embroiled his first couple of weeks in office, including immigration and foreign relations.
But three open slots are coming up soon, and the vice chairmanship will also be up for grabs.
That list of names just doesn’t exist yet. If he listens to the Republican establishment, the list could include conservative economists like Harvard’s Greg Mankiw, a former George W. Bush adviser, and Hoover Institution fellow and former Treasury official John Taylor.
If he doesn’t, as is often the case, the picks for governors and chair are hard to fathom. Perhaps someone with a bit of television flair, press-conference ready. Jim Cramer? Suze Orman?
