TP Link Archer A7TP-Link

  • I’ve been trying out TP-Link’s Archer A7 router, which has smart features like parental controls, a device block list, and setup and management that you can manage from an app. 
  • In my tests, the A7 could handle several internet-intensive tasks, like playing online games while streaming video, or downloading large files while browsing the web, without slowing down.
  • It’s not as powerful as modern mesh routers, but for $ 70 this is a traditional router I can easily recommend.

In a recent review I called mesh routers — which are typically sold in multi-packs, connecting to one other to spread WiFi evenly throughout your home — the future of networking, and I stand by that.

Earlier this month budget carrier Ryanair raised the cost of reserving standard seats from £2 to £4.

If you want extra legroom, you’ll have to fork out an extra £4 as the price of these seats has risen from £11 to £15.

The cost of front row seats – of which there are five – has also increased, now costing £13.01.

The increased prices were revealed by Money Saving Expert last week, however, it is not clear when these changes came into effect.

A Ryanair spokesperson commented: “Like all businesses, our fees can change unlike our fares which keep coming down.

“There have been some recent changes as per our list of fees published on our website… All these fees are optional to our customers and Ryanair continues to offer the lowest fares on flights.

“Ryanair’s family seating policy requires families (with children under 12) to sit together, with one adult taking a reserved seat for just £4, and the children are given free of charge reserved seats.”

However, many customers have not welcomed this news, as the price hike comes amidst passenger fury over the airline’s seating policy.

The Irish-owned airline is currently one of many under investigation by regulatory body, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), for its seating policy, following complaints from frustrated passengers who were not seated together despite empty rows being available.

The watchdog revealed that 35 per cent of people who didn’t pay more to sit together were separated from their group, the most out of any UK airline.

Many angry customers have taken to social media platform, Twitter, to vent their frustrations. One user tweeted: “@Ryanair, My fiancé and I purchased tickets together and checked in together. Despite this we have been allocated seats six rows apart. Despite this… the seats next to me are empty! (sic)”

CAA chief executive, Andrew Haines, commented: “Airline seating practices are clearly causing some confusion for consumers.

“Airlines are within their rights to charge for allocated seats, but if they do so it must be done in a fair, transparent way.

“Our research shows that some consumers are paying to sit together when, in fact, they might not need to. It also suggests that consumers have a better chance of being sat together for free with some airlines than with others.

“The research shows that it is the uncertainty around whether their group will be split up by the airline that is driving consumers to pay for an allocated seat.

The CAA’s initial findings revealed that one in three families are being seated separately, which costs passengers up to £400 million a year in additional fees.

Ryanair denies this alleged claim. A statement released by the airline on their official Twitter page explains their ‘random allocated seating’ policy.

It read: “This is entirely a matter of customer choice. We are not trying to force people to pay for reserved seats. We are very harry to facilitate any customer who wants a free of charge random seat but we are also going to do our best to facilitate customers who are willing to pay for a reserved seat.”

Ryanair Chief Marketing Officer Kenny Jacobs admitted in a press conference today that the airline sometimes splits up passengers who haven’t reserved seats. 

However, this is not done intentionally, he says, or because of any change in the seat algorithm.

Instead, it is because certain seats are more desirable for those booking ahead – so Ryanair have started to “hold” them.

“We want to keep certain seats available for people who might want to purchase.”

For instance, a party of three adults might be travelling together without having reserved seats.

Previously, they may have been automatically assigned to a particular row together. 

Now, if two were allocated to a particular row which already has a reserved aisle seat, the other may be placed in the next available seat in the row behind.

Some 50 per cent of Ryanair passengers now pay extra to reserve their seats, said Jacobs.

The other 50 per cent get seats allocated automatically – but, as explained, this may have consequences of being split up.

Jacobs denied the airline would ever intentionally separate people out via an algorithm.

“Do we have an algorithm to separate out people? No. We don’t even have time to think about doing that,” he said.

He also reminded of Ryanair’s policy of giving free reserved seats to children under 12 with their parents.

This is guaranteed by a €4.00 fee paid by an adult to secure the seating.

The media attended the press conference to hear about Ryanair’s UK business and current issues, hosted by Ryanair’s CMO. 

During the conference, Jacobs also confirmed Ryanair will fly from the UK after Brexit.

However, he added that there is a catch – what do you think it is?

Just as Tesla did with the Model 3, Fisker is taking reservations for its upcoming EMotion electric sedan at its website. Deposits for the Fisker are a bit pricier than those for the Model 3, though, at $ 2,000 per reservation. Model 3 deposits were half of that. Of course, at a base price of $ 129,900, the EMotion is also about three to four times more than the target cost of the Model 3. There’s also an interesting stipulation with reserving cars: Only three are allowed per person. We’re not really sure why someone would need to order sizable batches of any car, but maybe it’s just going to be that good.

The previously revealed specifications are certainly ambitious. Fisker says the car will be capable of going 400 miles on a charge, and that it will be able to pick up an extra 100 miles in 9 minutes of charging on a proprietary charging system. The car features autonomous technology, too, and some of the sensors are smartly hidden in the front chrome “grille.” That faux grille and other styling details are all on display in an array of new photos and a video, all of which are shown above. The video shows the car in great detail as it slowly cruises past the overt “green” imagery of windmills and solar panels.
