Japan lagged behind other countries not just in developing vaccines, but also in approving them when it came to COVID-19. As the publication points out, three of Japan's most advanced COVID-19 vaccine candidates are still undergoing clinical trials. To prevent a repeat, the country established the Strategic Center of Biomedical Advanced Vaccine Research and Development for Preparedness and Response (SCARDA) back in March. 

SCARDA's central research center will be based in Tokyo, but it will be supported by four core institutes, namely Osaka University, Nagasaki University, Hokkaido University and Chiba University. The $ 2 billion funding is supposed to keep it running for five years. $ 1.2 billion will go towards the center's vaccine research and development projects, while $ 400 million will be spent on supporting start-ups in drug development. The other $ 400 million will go towards setting up a network of research centers across the nation, as well as towards vaccine testing.

SCARDA will initially focus on developing vaccines for eight infectious diseases, including COVID-19, monkeypox, SARS, dengue and Zika virus. Its researchers will look into various types of vaccine technologies, as well, such as mRNA and viral vectors. The center aims "to find seeds for future vaccines," but its ultimate goal is to be able to conjure up diagnostic tests, vaccines and treatments within 100 days of the identification of a pathogen that has the potential to become a pandemic. 

It was the UK government that first proposed the 100-day response goal, based on what it learned from COVID-19. "The first 100 days when faced with a pandemic or epidemic threat are crucial to changing its course and, ideally, preventing it from becoming a pandemic," the UK wrote in its pandemic preparedness report to the G7. According to the World Health Organization, it recorded over 2.5 million cases and 200,000 deaths 100 days after it declared COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern. A swift response from the start could've prevented those numbers from getting any higher.

The academics behind the new study say current ways of measuring gender inequality are “biased to highlight women’s issues” so they fail to produce an accurate picture. Their new yardstick, snappily named the Basic Index of Gender Inequality (BIGI), instead focuses on three factors – educational opportunities, healthy life expectancy, and overall life satisfaction.

The academics, from the University of Missouri in the US and the University of Essex in the UK, used these factors to calculate equality scores for 134 nations, representing 6.8 billion people.

The results are in and, surprisingly, men were found to be more disadvantaged than women in 91 countries while women were more disadvantaged than men in 43. Men are worse off in the US, Russia and most European nations.

“No existing measure of gender inequality fully captures the hardships that are disproportionately experienced by men in many countries and so they do not fully capture the extent to which any specific country is promoting the well-being of all its citizens,” one of the lead researchers, Professor Gijsbert Stoet, explained.

We’re not saying that women in highly developed countries are not experiencing disadvantages in some aspects of their lives. What we are saying is that an ideal measure of gender equality is not biased to the disadvantages of either gender. Doing so, we find a different picture to the one commonly presented in the media.

The research, which was published this week in PLOS ONE, found that the world’s most developed countries came closest to gender equality, with women gaining a slight advantage. In the least developed nations women were nearly always behind men, largely due to a lack of educational opportunities.

“With the BIGI, we are focusing on issues that are important to all women and men in any nation, regardless of level of economic and political development, and by including factors that can disadvantage men as well as women,” Professor David Geary from the University of Missouri said. “Current equality measures are generally biased to highlight women’s issues and thus are not really measures of gender equality.”

For more than a decade the Global Gender Gap Index has been one of the most established measures of national gender inequality. But Professor Stoet argues that it fails to measure issues where men are at a disadvantage, such as harsher punishments for the same crime, compulsory military service and more occupational deaths.

He also says the complexity of the index means it can be difficult to distinguish whether gender differences are the result of social inequalities or personal preference.

  • New research from the University of Sussex found that participating in “dry January” — a month-long abstention from drinking alcohol — could improve health throughout the rest of the year. 
  • Many participants reported having improved health, better sleep, more energy, easier weight loss, better concentration, and better skin. 
  • Many also said that they drank less often throughout the year, long after the end of January. 

If starting off the new year with more sleep, money, and less weight is on your goals list, then researchers from the University of Sussex say they may have just the trick. Participating in “Dry January” — a month-long abstention from booze — has shown to help people get control over their drinking, have more energy, be more successful at losing weight, and even have better skin. What’s more, many participants reported they were drinking less even months after participating in the global campaign.

 developer Niantic has revealed more about January’s Field Research rewards.

Fans who earn a Field Research Breakthrough in January will have a chance to encounter two new Legendary Pokemon.

From January 1 until the end of February, Lugia and Ho-Oh will join the current list of Legendary rewards.

“The year 2019 is around the corner, and it’s already looking to be legendary!” reads a Niantic tweet.

“When you reach a Research Breakthrough in January and February, you’ll have the chance to encounter several Legendary Pokémon, including Lugia and Ho-Oh!”

Lugia and Ho-Oh join the current crop of  Breakthrough Pokemon, which includes Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Raikou, Entei and Suicune.

“All eight of these Pokemon will be available as potential Research Breakthrough encounters until the end of February,” Niantic confirms.

In the meantime, Pokemon Go players are enjoying the Christmas event and all of its bonuses.

Running until January 2, the latest Pokemon Go Christmas event once again sees the return of Delibird.

The gift-giving Pocket Monster will be joined by lots of Ice-type Pokemon such as Jynx, Sneasel, Swinub, Snorunt, Spheal, and Snover.

Needless to say, fans will also be able to encounter Pikachu wearing a festive hat.

Elsewhere, Smoochum, Azurill, and Munchlax will have a greater chance of hatching from 7 km Eggs, which can be unlocked by sending and receiving gifts to friends.

Trainers will also receive free single-use Incubators by spinning PokeStops until January 2. This is limited to one a day.

Limited time bonuses are also available for the duration of the event.

Players can earn double XP by capturing Pokemon until December 30, followed by speedier Incubators until January 2.
