The outlet obtained an audio recording of a September 2021 meeting where the company detailed an internal feature called “creator labels” that was reserved for accounts with more than 5 million followers. When it came to moderating those users, many of them influencers and celebrities, TikTok reportedly filtered them through a separate moderation queue that saw the company treat those accounts differently.

“We don’t want to treat these users as, um, like any other accounts. There’s a bit more leniency, I’d say,” one employee with TikTok’s Trust and Safety said during the meeting, according to Forbes. On its website, the company states its Community Guidelines apply to “everyone and everything on TikTok.”

TikTok did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for comment. A spokesperson for the company told Forbes it is “not more lenient in moderating accounts with more than 5 million followers,” adding it does not have moderation queues based on follower counts.

If the report is accurate, TikTok would not be the first company to treat its most influential and powerful users differently. In 2021, The Wall Street Journal detailed how Meta’s XCheck system had allowed millions of high-profile Facebook and Instagram users to skirt its rules. In one incident described by the report, the system “blocked” Facebook moderators from removing nude photos Brazilian soccer star Neymar posted of a woman who had accused him of sexual assault. The post was viewed more than 60 million times before Meta took action. Additionally, the company did not ban Nyemar’s account, even though he shared non-consensual nudity in violation of its Community Guidelines.

All iPhone 15 models will reportedly feature Dynamic Island display cutouts https://briefnews.eu/all-iphone-15-models-will-reportedly-feature-dynamic-island-display-cutouts/ https://briefnews.eu/all-iphone-15-models-will-reportedly-feature-dynamic-island-display-cutouts/#respond Mon, 19 Sep 2022 03:23:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/all-iphone-15-models-will-reportedly-feature-dynamic-island-display-cutouts/ The entire iPhone 15 lineup will reportedly include the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island. In a tweet spotted by MacRumors, display analyst Ross Young said he expects Apple to make the screen cutout standard on all 2023 iPhones. Additionally, the company will reportedly keep its ProMotion 120Hz display technology exclusive to Pro variants due to a supply chain that “can’t support” the feature on more affordable models. In a subsequent tweet, Young said Apple is likelier to trickle down the technology to less expensive iPhones in 2024.

Making the Dynamic Island standard on every new iPhone moving forward would make a lot of sense for Apple, particularly to encourage developers to take advantage of the feature. Some apps already use the cutout for fun features. Once iOS 16.1 arrives later this year, Dynamic Island will also work with Apple’s Live Activities API. It’s also a feature that would make the standard iPhone more appealing to consumers holding onto their current device. While the iPhone 12 was a big upgrade over the iPhone 11, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have been less exciting. There’s not much reason to buy the latest one unless you’re coming from an iPhone several years old, and that's not great for Apple's bottom line.

Google reportedly won’t make another Pixelbook laptop https://briefnews.eu/google-reportedly-wont-make-another-pixelbook-laptop/ https://briefnews.eu/google-reportedly-wont-make-another-pixelbook-laptop/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 21:06:24 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/google-reportedly-wont-make-another-pixelbook-laptop/ Google is killing its Pixelbook laptop, according to an internal memo reported byThe Verge. The company has also “shut down” the team that was working on the next generation of the device, which was reportedly “far along in development.”

The company apparently opted to shift resources away from the premium Chromebook in an effort to cut costs. Members of the Pixelbook team were reportedly moved to other roles at Google.

The move means Google is officially done making laptops after nearly a decade of experimenting with notebooks. In 2013, the company introduced the Chromebook Pixel — the first Google-made hardware to get Pixel branding — and refreshed it with a pricier model two years later. Google shifted strategies again in 2017, when the first Pixelbook debuted as a high-end alternative to the typically low-cost Chromebooks. The 2-in-1 started at $ 999, and came with an optional Pixelbook Pen accessory.

In 2019, Google introduced the $ 649 Pixelbook Go as a more affordable, but still higher-end, Chromebook with Pixel branding. Though the Pixel-branded Chromebooks were meant to show off just how much was possible when Chrome OS was combined with more premium hardware, the devices never seemed to be as popular as the cheaper alternatives that have long dominated classrooms, particularly during the pandemic.

Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPU

Nvidia announced yesterday that its upcoming H100 “Hopper” Tensor Core GPU set new performance records during its debut in the industry-standard MLPerf benchmarks, delivering results up to 4.5 times faster than the A100, which is currently Nvidia’s fastest production AI chip.

The MPerf benchmarks (technically called “MLPerfTM Inference 2.1“) measure “inference” workloads, which demonstrate how well a chip can apply a previously trained machine learning model to new data. A group of industry firms known as the MLCommons developed the MLPerf benchmarks in 2018 to deliver a standardized metric for conveying machine learning performance to potential customers.

In particular, the H100 did well in the BERT-Large benchmark, which measures natural language-processing performance using the BERT model developed by Google. Nvidia credits this particular result to the Hopper architecture’s Transformer Engine, which specifically accelerates training transformer models. This means that the H100 could accelerate future natural language models similar to OpenAI’s GPT-3, which can compose written works in many different styles and hold conversational chats.

A Game of Thrones Animated Series Is Reportedly in the Works at HBO Max— Would You Watch? https://briefnews.eu/a-game-of-thrones-animated-series-is-reportedly-in-the-works-at-hbo-max-would-you-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/a-game-of-thrones-animated-series-is-reportedly-in-the-works-at-hbo-max-would-you-watch/#respond Thu, 28 Jan 2021 01:07:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/a-game-of-thrones-animated-series-is-reportedly-in-the-works-at-hbo-max-would-you-watch/

Yet another Game of Thrones iteration reportedly is in development, this time at HBO Max.

The streaming service is in the very early stages of development on an animated drama that would cater to an adult audience and would have the same feel as the original series, per The Hollywood Reporter.

If the project comes to fruition, it would join several other Thrones-related offshoots in various stages of development. A prequel titled House of the Dragon was ordered to series at HBO in late 2019 and will follow Daenerys’ (and Jon’s) ancestors in House Targaryen as the storied family begins its legendary fall. The series was co-created by Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal (Colony), and it stars Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Paddy Considine (The Outsider) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel). Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will serve as co-showrunners.

In addition, the premium cable network also reportedly is developing a series based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, which chronicle the adventures of Dunk (aka Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Aegon V Targaryen).

Reps for HBO Max declined to comment for this story.

The thought of an animated Thrones series aimed at adults made us wonder: Would you want to watch such a spinoff? So weigh in via the poll below, then hit the comments with your thoughts about the potential venture!

Facebook reportedly took three years to tackle fake news in one country https://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/#respond Sun, 03 Mar 2019 07:39:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-reportedly-took-three-years-to-tackle-fake-news-in-one-country/

Facebook is quick to tout its efforts to thwart misinformation campaigns in major European countries and the US, but its approach in other countries might not be quite so enthusiastic. Developers in Moldova told BuzzFeed News that they’d been asking Facebook to address fake news and misinformation in the country for three years before it finally removed the offenders. The Moldovans said they used a browser add-on (Trolless) to generate a database of fake accounts and had been using the official reporting tool to draw attention to them since 2016, but didn’t have any luck until they made direct contact with a Facebook employee in January 2019.

The social network said it had been investigating the misinformation in question (including 168 fake accounts, 28 pages and eight Instagram accounts) since early January, but added that the Trolless developers influenced its decision to remove offenders in February.

The incident isn’t unique: the creator of the French site Hoaxbuster also reported having similar problems getting in touch. The findings suggest that the reporting tool isn’t as effective as it’s supposed to be, and that Facebook appears to prioritize input from its official fact-checking allies over that of independents. That in turn, raises the chances that fake accounts might go unnoticed at crucial moments. In Moldova, for instance, Russian influence campaigns have been present for a long time — there’s a real risk that a bogus Facebook post might succeed where conventional propaganda might fail.

Smart glasses maker North reportedly lays off 150 https://briefnews.eu/smart-glasses-maker-north-reportedly-lays-off-150/ https://briefnews.eu/smart-glasses-maker-north-reportedly-lays-off-150/#respond Fri, 22 Feb 2019 20:02:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/smart-glasses-maker-north-reportedly-lays-off-150/

North, the makers of the Focals smart glasses, has laid off a portion of its workforce. The company confirmed the layoffs to Engadget but would not specify how many people lost their jobs. The Verge reported today that the cuts affected 150 employees, which would account for a significant chunk of the more than 400 people who were employed by North.

In a statement to Engadget, North CEO Stephen Lake said the layoffs were necessary to “focus our resources and ensure we have sufficient runway to execute on our upcoming milestones over the next 18-24 months.” Lake also defended expanding North’s workforce more than 400 people, calling those hires “the right choices at the time.” Lake claimed the company will do “everything they can” to ensure the laid-off employees will land on their feet.

North launched its first pair of smart glasses, the Focals, in January. The spectacles use holographic display technology to project information like weather updates and calendar notifications on the lens of the glasses. After releasing the wearables, North quickly cut the price from $ 999 to $ 599.99. It’s not clear if that price adjustment was a response to slow sales.

Amazon is reportedly using drivers’ tips for their base pay https://briefnews.eu/amazon-is-reportedly-using-drivers-tips-for-their-base-pay/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-is-reportedly-using-drivers-tips-for-their-base-pay/#respond Fri, 08 Feb 2019 08:12:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-is-reportedly-using-drivers-tips-for-their-base-pay/

Amazon is pulling an Instacart and counting customers’ tips towards Flex drivers’ base pay, according to an investigation by LA Times. The Flex program, which you can think of as Uber for high-speed deliveries, promises contract drivers a base pay between $ 18 and $ 25 an hour. But based on the emails the Times reviewed and according to the drivers it interviewed, the e-commerce giant has been dipping into contractors’ tips to be able to meet its minimum pay commitment.

Amazon apparently wrote this line in several emails sent to drivers: “We add any supplemental earnings required to meet our commitment that delivery partners earn $ 18-$ 25 per hour.” It’s not entirely clear what it means by “supplemental earnings,” and whether it truly pertains to tips due to the lack of transparency about its drivers’ earnings. Since contractors are never sure whether they’re receiving everything they should be getting — Amazon decides what to pay based on the length of shift and customer demand — at least two of them conducted an experiment by placing an order for themselves.

A driver from Virginia tipped himself $ 15.90 to deliver paper towels to his own family, but his two-hour pay for that shift didn’t come with the amount. Amazon said he didn’t get anything extra for that day until he filed a complaint. Another driver tipped himself $ 12, which he was supposed to receive on top of his $ 27 base pay for a one-and-a-half hour shift. Instead of getting $ 39, he only received a little more than $ 30, suggesting that the company only contributed $ 18 to his payment.

Grocery delivery service Instacart recently had to revise its pay policy after facing backlash for dipping into its workers’ tips. It vowed to keep its contribution separate from gratuity given by customers. Meanwhile, a BuzzFeed report also found that on-demand food delivery service DoorDash does the same thing.

Whether Amazon is also open to revising its policies remains to be seen, seeing as spokeswoman Amanda Ip denied that the Flex program counts tips towards workers’ minimum pay. She told LA Times in a statement:

“Our pay commitment to delivery partners has not changed since we launched the Amazon Flex program — delivery partners still earn $ 18-25 per hour, including 100% of tips — and on average drivers earn over $ 20/hour.”
