John Redwood snapped at the Labour MP, Rupa Huq, and told her to not interrupt him as he spoke during a debate.

The pair were discussing the implications of the UK leaving the EU with no-deal, before the Brexit Secretary outlined Britain’s no-deal preparation during a key speech later on Thursday.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Redwood said: “A lot of people can’t understand the delay. They say to the Government, rightly, get on with it.

“If the EU doesn’t want to do a free trade deal then we can trade perfectly well under World Trade Organisation rules.”

Labour MP Ms Huq then attempted to interrupt the Conservative MP sparking a swift response from the Brexiteer.

Mr Redwood replied: “I didn’t interrupt you because I wasn’t allowed to, so will you please not interrupt me?

“We will trade under those terms, we know exactly how they work because that’s how we do the bulk of our trade today.

“There is no problem in importing things from China or America, huge quantities from China, they arrive when we want them, they are not delayed at our ports.

“So why should there be any delay or problems if we import materials from Germany and France on the same basis that we currently import from China and America.”

The debate took place before Dominic Raab outlined how the UK is preparing to leave the European Union without a deal.

During an interview on BBC’s Today programme on Thursday morning, the Brexit Secretary launched a scathing attack on the “dwindling” supporters of Project Fear.

Speaking ahead of his key speech, he said: “There is an irony in this debate because some of those promoting the worst scare stories around no deal, making the case at the eleventh hour to call off Brexit, are relying on the fact that they say or they assume the EU will behave in a vindictive way.

“I fear that’s the Achille’s heel of the latest incarnation of Project Fear by admittedly a rather small and dwindling number of those trying to frustrate Brexit.”

During his speech, he said: “Naturally we have to got to consider the alternative possibility, that the EU does not match our ambition and pragmatism, and we do not reach a deal.

“Let me be clear about this. This is not what we want. And it’s not what we expect. But, we must be ready.

“We have a duty, as a responsible government, to plan for every eventuality.”

The Brexit Secretary explained during his speech that there is already planning talks between the Bank of England and the European Central Bank for a no-deal scenario and called for talks to begin on data protection and between port authorities.

Under current plans, the reports will be published in batches, starting on Thursday and running through September.

Conte steered Chelsea to victory in the FA Cup final today as they .

It is thought this could have been Conte’s final game with Chelsea after a fraught season on and off the pitch.

Disagreements over transfers means the campaign got off on the wrong foot and Chelsea’s title defence never materialised.

And Conte said in his post-match press conference that he remains content at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Italian also conceded his future could lie elsewhere.

“I have a contract and I’m committed for this club,” he said defiantly.

“I think from the start of this season, because don’t forget the speculation started after our first defeat against Burnley, my position was always the same: I’m committed for this club, despite a lot of speculation.

“One day I had the possibility to go to the national team, one day this team, one day another important team.

“In every press conference I always say I’m committed to this club, to respect my contract. As you know very well our job is not simple. I understand that the club can make a decision, a positive decision, a negative decision.

“I’m the first to understand. I’m the coach of a great, important club, in England and the world. It’s right that the club demands of me a lot.

“I think you have to understand if in this season we had the maximum or not. There is also this possibility with this group of players we did the maximum. I have great respect for my club.

“For sure we’ll make the best decision. I’m the first to accept every decision for the future.

“After these two seasons I will always love this colour, these fans, this club. Also if my future must be in a different way.”

The FA Cup win makes amends for last season’s defeat at Wembley when were downed by Arsenal.

It means Conte takes his Blues trophy hoard to two in two seasons.

He joined the west London club back in the summer of 2016 after an impressive stint with Italy at the European Championships.

Conte also boasts titles at Juventus and spoke about his latest triumph.

“When you are used to winning every season – don’t forget I was used to winning every season – this type of season can try to create some problems in yourself,” he said.

“When you have this type of season there are moments that you have a lot of questions for yourself.

“But I think, also in this season, in a difficult season like this, I showed I’m a serial winner. This is the truth.

“To win in this way this season give me more satisfaction than my wins in the past.”

Mourinho misery

Chelsea won the final thanks to Eden Hazard’s penalty after the Belgian was felled in the box by Phil Jones.

After the game, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hit out at the Blues and claimed his side deserved to win.

“I think our team did a fantastic defensive job without defending. We controlled positions, transitions really well,” he said.

“They only played long balls to Giroud to flick. When you play against a team so predictable it’s quite easy to adapt to it.

“I thought we wouldn’t concede any goal in this match. But of course Hazard is a very good player and he created a penalty.”

‘Would you prefer pet or love?’ Virgin Trains apologizes for ‘sexist’ reply to customer complaint https://briefnews.eu/would-you-prefer-pet-or-love-virgin-trains-apologizes-for-sexist-reply-to-customer-complaint/ https://briefnews.eu/would-you-prefer-pet-or-love-virgin-trains-apologizes-for-sexist-reply-to-customer-complaint/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 13:59:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/would-you-prefer-pet-or-love-virgin-trains-apologizes-for-sexist-reply-to-customer-complaint/ Virgin Trains has apologized “unreservedly” for replying to a sexism complaint with even more sexism. The rail company mocked a woman on Twitter after she complained about being called “honey” by a member of staff.

Passenger Emily Cole tweeted: “When Virgin Trains mess up and the older male train manager in the resulting conversation dismisses you with that hideously patronising word women shudder at in contexts such as these: ‘honey.’”

Virgin Trains, owned by Richard Branson, responded by saying: “Sorry for the mess up Emily, would you prefer ‘pet’ or ‘love’ next time?”

Cole shared the reply and wrote: “Wonderful to see that @virgin_trainsEC take complaints of rude and misogynistic behaviour seriously. Stunned.” Hundreds of others have since taken to Twitter to call out Virgin Trains, labeling their response “patronising,” “sexist,” “condescending” and “inappropriate.”

One Twitter user wrote: “So instead of giving good customer service, you thought it would be best to mimic the behavior being complained about?” while another said: “How is that appropriate on any level?”

Virgin Trains has now deleted its reply and apologized. It said: “We apologise unreservedly for this tweet and any offence that it may have caused. To avoid causing more offence we have deleted the original post.”

The embarrassing incident comes on the same day rail ticket prices increased, which is now usual in January. This year’s increase however was the biggest in five years, spurring dozens of protests against the rise by commuter groups and unions at the UK’s busiest stations on Tuesday. Private rail companies are not popular.

Senior Labour politicians joined protests over average fare increases of 3.4 percent and season ticket increases of 3.6 percent. The rise, the biggest since 2013, is more than the consumer price index inflation rate and well above average increases in annual earnings.

Rail bosses are defending the increase. The chief executive of Network Rail – the body which manages Britain’s rail infrastructure – Mark Carne said passengers would see many of the benefits of investment this year, including the final stage of London Bridge station’s reopening.  This will be followed by the upgraded Thameslink train service in May, and the start of Crossrail services by the end of the year.

He told the Guardian: “Obviously today we see a fare increase and I know passengers are not happy, nor with the reliability of the railway, and that’s why we are investing so heavily to improve it.”

It’s not the first time Virgin Trains has been called out for its questionable public relations. In August last year it was forced to release CCTV footage from one of its trains which proved Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had not lied about having to join seatless commuters on the floor in a scandal dubbed ‘Traingate.’

Corbyn was filmed by freelancer Yannis Mendez from the floor of a train where he chose to sit instead of upgrading to first class on his way to Newcastle from London. After CCTV footage was released by Branson, appearing to show Corbyn and his team walking past empty seats on the train, he was accused of staging the scene to make a political point.

Plutocrat tycoon Branson tweeted: “What about all those empty seats he passed?”

Following the controversy, Mendez made a formal request for the complete CCTV footage. It took Virgin seven months to comply. The firm claimed it did not release all the footage due to “technical difficulties.”

However, the released footage showed the “empty” seats were in fact occupied, with some passengers only visible when they move into frame, or taken up by small children not visible from behind their seats.

Chrome OS will let you reply to messages from notifications https://briefnews.eu/chrome-os-will-let-you-reply-to-messages-from-notifications/ https://briefnews.eu/chrome-os-will-let-you-reply-to-messages-from-notifications/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 18:17:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chrome-os-will-let-you-reply-to-messages-from-notifications/

You’ve had the option to reply to message notifications on Android for years, so why can’t you do that on your shiny new Chromebook? You can soon. Google has started implementing support for in-line replies to messages from notifications. Much as on Android, you can respond to a message from a supporting app (Hangouts is one example) in the pop-up box rather than switching tasks entirely and losing your focus.

The feature isn’t yet included in public builds, and it’s clearly unfinished. Google itself warns that there aren’t even animations and a “submit” icon to send a message with a click. It’ll likely take weeks before you can easily try this yourself. When it does arrive, though, it should make your life considerably easier if you want to keep a conversation going while you’re in the midst of a Netflix marathon.

Moscow: Radio Liberty may be branded ‘foreign agent’ in reply to US crackdown on Russian media https://briefnews.eu/moscow-radio-liberty-may-be-branded-foreign-agent-in-reply-to-us-crackdown-on-russian-media/ https://briefnews.eu/moscow-radio-liberty-may-be-branded-foreign-agent-in-reply-to-us-crackdown-on-russian-media/#respond Mon, 09 Oct 2017 21:46:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/moscow-radio-liberty-may-be-branded-foreign-agent-in-reply-to-us-crackdown-on-russian-media/

Several services of the US government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) might be restricted in Russia, the Russian Justice Ministry has warned the broadcaster, saying the measure comes in response to Washington’s recent moves against Russian media in the US.

Russian authorities have warned the Washington-funded organization that its activity falls under Article 2 of the Russian Federal law on NGOs, which regards its operations as those of a foreign agent.

By law, Moscow “might impose restrictions” on the activities of the broadcaster in Russia, RFE/RL reported Monday, citing a letter from the Justice Ministry.

Several services of the broadcaster, including its Russian-language network Current Time television, run in cooperation with Voice of America, as well as RFE/RL’s Russian service Radio Svoboda, might be subjected to certain restrictions.

“Current Time, Radio Svoboda, and Idel Realii [website run by RFE/RL Tatar-Bashkir service] are journalistic organizations. We trust we will be able to continue our work,” the broadcaster’s vice president and editor-in-chief, Nenad Pejic, said in a statement Monday.

The letter from the Justice Ministry is a “tit-for-tat measure for the oppression of the Russian media in the US,” the ministry explained in a statement. It added the retaliatory policy will be further applied based on Washington’s actions toward Russian media operating in America.

Based on Russia’s media law, restrictions might be imposed on correspondents working for media organizations from countries that put limitations on journalists working for Russian-registered media there.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson warned that Moscow was ready to restrict the activities of some American media in Russia. The measures might come in response to Washington’s attempts to limit the work of RT in the US, Maria Zakharova said.

Having mentioned “unprecedented pressure” on Russian media in some western countries, and “in the US in the first place,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has previously warned that Moscow might act accordingly towards certain foreign media operating in Russia.
