Following failed attempts to blast the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket skyward on August 29 and September 3, NASA engineers at the Kennedy Space Center launch site in Florida have been working tirelessly to fix the issues that caused those countdowns to halt.

With the rocket still on the launchpad, the to-do list has included replacing the seals at the center of the hydrogen leak that occurred during fueling operations for the rocket’s second launch attempt.

“Engineers have replaced the seals associated with the hydrogen leak detected during the #Artemis I launch attempt on Sept. 3,” NASA confirmed on Saturday. “The teams will inspect the new seals over the weekend and assess opportunities to launch.”

The launch team is now aiming to conduct a tanking demonstration as soon as September 17, a procedure designed to check the new seals under super-cold conditions that replicate the conditions on launch day.

The tanking demonstration will involve loading liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen in the SLS rocket’s core stage and interim cryogenic propulsion stage and getting to a stable replenish state for both propellants, NASA said.

Engineers will also conduct several other tests to validate the ground and flight hardware and software systems’ ability to perform the necessary functions required to thermally condition the engines for flight.

Once all of these preparations have been successfully carried out, the team will assess the data and make a final decision on whether to go for launch before the end of this month.

The upcoming Artemis I missions is one of the most highly anticipated NASA events in years as it will usher in a new era of space exploration that will soon involve astronaut missions to the moon and even Mars.

When the uncrewed Artemis I launch takes place hopefully in the coming weeks, the most powerful rocket NASA has ever built will propel the new Orion spacecraft toward the moon, where it’ll perform a fly-by before returning to Earth about six weeks later.

A successful mission will pave the way for Artemis II that will see the Orion take the same route though this time with a crew on board.

Artemis III, which could take place as early as 2025, will endeavor to put the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface in what will also be the first astronaut landing since the final Apollo mission in 1972.

But that’s just the start, as NASA wants to build a moon base for long-duration astronaut missions, and also send the first crew to Mars in a historic voyage that could take place in the late 2030s. But before that can happen, there is still much work to be done.

Keeping vehicles in good working order is about more than just getting to work on time for the US Army. A breakdown in the middle of a combat zone could prove deadly. So, to help keep on top of repairs, the army is testing artificial intelligence to predict when a vehicle might need a new part.

The army is monitoring several dozen Bradley M2A3 vehicles using a machine learning algorithm from Uptake Technologies. It hopes the Asset Performance Management application will reduce unscheduled maintenance and make repairs more efficient and productive, in part by predicting when components will fail. That will help mechanics be more proactive in fixing issues before they become serious problems. As with many other effective uses of AI, Uptake’s software is designed to augment, rather than replace humans in making decisions.

Uptake says the Bradley has a similar engine and parts to a string of industrial machines and vehicles. The software can monitor Bradley engine data points such as temperature, coolant and RPM, and the AI compares patterns with those from similar engines that have failed. The company has more than 1.2 billion hours of operating data the AI can draw from to make predictions.

The trial is worth just $ 1 million to Uptake, The Washington Post reported, but if it’s successful, the military could expand the AI to more of the Bradley fleet, along with other vehicles. Several military leaders have been pushing for the army to embrace the capabilities of AI, but there has been strong resistance from tech company workers. Google recently pulled out of Project Maven, which harnesses AI to analyze drone footage, after a backlash from thousands of employees.

MOT check – Calculate the cost of repairs and where to get the best deal using this tool https://briefnews.eu/mot-check-calculate-the-cost-of-repairs-and-where-to-get-the-best-deal-using-this-tool/ https://briefnews.eu/mot-check-calculate-the-cost-of-repairs-and-where-to-get-the-best-deal-using-this-tool/#respond Sun, 20 May 2018 07:33:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mot-check-calculate-the-cost-of-repairs-and-where-to-get-the-best-deal-using-this-tool/

UK drivers could save themselves hundreds off the cost of necessary repairs for faults found in the MOT test by using a handy new tool.

Today, the new MOT rules come into force which introduces a raft of changes and will also make it harder for diesel vehicles to pass, with stricter limits being imposed.

Faults found in the MOT test will be ranked as either Minor, Major or Dangerous, with the latter two needing immediate repair.

Often repairs can be expensive and on average they cost drivers £143, according to WhoCanFixMyCar.

To assist drivers slashing the repair bill the company has created an online calculator which will estimate the cost of repairs and found how much it costs to repair those specific defects in the local area.

They believe that in total it could save UK motorists up to £1.8billion off the cost of repairs.

MOT testers will focus more on steering systems, lights and brake pads, with a steering box leak, worn brake pads and blown out bulbs all resulting in a test fail.

The new MOT laws will put more pressure on motorists to have any unsafe defects repaired either instantly if the vehicle has failed the test or quickly if advisories or minors have been given.

Al Preston, co-founder of WhoCanFixMyCar.com, said: “I’m sure many drivers are nervous about the new MOT legislation coming into effect, however the stricter guidelines will ensure the safety of all motorists in the UK, which can only be a good thing.

“My advice would be to have your car checked over by a professional before the MOT, so you’re not surprised by any defects that can leave you carless for a while.

“We’re hoping the MOT test cost calculator will serve as a really helpful tool for drivers, so they can plan for how much various repairs will cost in their area, and more importantly, they have the knowledge on what it should cost!”

Report: Butterfly MacBook Pro keyboards require more frequent, more expensive repairs https://briefnews.eu/report-butterfly-macbook-pro-keyboards-require-more-frequent-more-expensive-repairs/ https://briefnews.eu/report-butterfly-macbook-pro-keyboards-require-more-frequent-more-expensive-repairs/#respond Tue, 08 May 2018 13:29:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/report-butterfly-macbook-pro-keyboards-require-more-frequent-more-expensive-repairs/

An AppleInsider article has stoked some consumer frustration over Apple’s butterfly keyboards. In it, AppleInsider combed through a limited dataset of warranty events from participating Apple Genius Bars and third-party repair shops. The site determined that, in that data, the 2016 MacBook Pro’s keyboard accounted for twice the percentage of all warranty events in that machine’s first year on the market as its predecessors from 2014 and 2015 did.

These keyboards already have plenty of detractors. They have very short travel, which serves two functions: it frees up a tiny bit of space in the machine for other components (every nanometer counts), and it can make typing considerably faster since not as much effort is needed to register a key press. I like these keyboards, but a lot of other people feel strongly that they’re terrible to type on.

The AppleInsider report has resulted in Apple customers expressing frustration in forums and on Reddit. Detractors have even started a Change.org petition asking Apple to recall all MacBook Pros from 2016 and later and replace their keyboards with a new design that is less prone to failure. That’s not likely to happen—partly because it’s not practical and partly because the data is not as conclusive as it might seem.

Top five simple car repairs that could cost you thousands in fines if you don’t fix them https://briefnews.eu/top-five-simple-car-repairs-that-could-cost-you-thousands-in-fines-if-you-dont-fix-them/ https://briefnews.eu/top-five-simple-car-repairs-that-could-cost-you-thousands-in-fines-if-you-dont-fix-them/#respond Sat, 24 Mar 2018 07:20:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-five-simple-car-repairs-that-could-cost-you-thousands-in-fines-if-you-dont-fix-them/

Common car repairs that could land you thousands of pounds in fines

There is a list of common faults that can easily occur with you car, often through no fault of your own or just by general wear and tear.

It may be tempting to put off these repairs, as they may seem too minor to necessitate being fixed immediately.

However, simple faults with your car could result in you forking out a hefty bill if they require repairing down the line.

In addition to the associated cost with these faults, there is also the issue of penalty point drivers can wrack up or how they could see you fail your MOT.

Jonathan Nolan, General Manager at UK Carline commented: “When it comes to the cost of a fine compared to the cost of a repair, sometimes £50 doesn’t seem like much money.

“However, motorists should be aware of how these problems can deteriorate and therefore negatively affect the resale value of your vehicle, or lead to damage recharges from your finance company.

“If your car does go back to the finance company at the end of your contract with any of the above problems then you will be charged to have them fixed.

“Therefore, it is best to maintain a vehicle as and when problems arise to avoid fines from the police, penalty points and charges from your finance company, and to maintain a good value for the vehicle.”

Worn tyres – up to a £10,000 fine

Worn car tyres have the potential to be very costly if they are left to get worse.

If a tyre’s tread depth falls below the legal limit, it can be extremely dangerous, putting you, as well as other drivers, at risk.

Driving with illegal or bald tyres invalidates your insurance and you could also be fined up to £10,000 (£2500 per tyre), as well as receiving 12 penalty points on your licence – enough for you to receive an immediate ban.

Drivers should check their tyres’ tread at least once a month in order to ensure they’re road worthy and safe to drive on.

New tyres can be fitted for under £50, so it’s worth keeping an eye on how your current ones are faring regularly to ensure you don’t get caught out.

Using a 20p coin is a great way of checking how your tyres measure up. If your tread depth is shallower than the outer edge of the coin, it’s a good sign that they’re below the legal limit of 1.6mm.

Cracked windscreen – £50 fine

As tempting as it can be to leave a small chip in your windscreen, it could soon turn into a big crack. If the crack is severe enough to obscure your view when driving, then this could result in a fixed penalty notice of £50, as your vehicle is classed as being in a dangerous or defective condition.

You might be thinking £50 is worth the risk, but if you leave a chip in your windscreen and the condition deteriorates so much that it causes your car to fail its MOT, you could be left with the bigger problem of having to replace your entire windscreen, and even without your car for multiple days.

There are many companies that offer reasonably priced windscreen chip repair, and it can often be re-claimed on your insurance, so it’s best to get it looked at.

Windscreen wipers – £50 fine

Sadly, windscreen wipers are essential for driving in Britain given the weather. If your windscreen wipers stop working and you don’t get them fixed, your view will be severely impacted should the heavens open – as they do all-too-often.

Defective windscreen wipers can result in a fixed penalty notice of £50 if you’re caught, and with new wiper blades costing as little as £20, it’s a no brainer to fix this common issue.

Broken headlights

When driving in low or no light, headlights must be used if the visibility is 100 metres or less, and if you have broken headlights and drive in a low-lit area without getting them fixed, you could be putting yourself at serious risk.

Refitting a headlight bulb often costs less than a tenner, so if you find yourself with this common issue, get it fixed as soon as possible.

Broken wing mirrors – up to £2,500 fine

Damaged or broken wing mirrors seriously impact a driver’s ability to see what’s going on around them, which can put you and other drivers in danger.

If the condition of your vehicle endangers another person, you could receive a large fine of up to £2,500, as well as three points on your licence.

To get a wing mirror replaced costs around £150, or around £15 if you only need to replace the glass, so it’s definitely not worth the risk of a fine.

Samsung is offering same-day repairs for busted Galaxy phones across the US https://briefnews.eu/samsung-is-offering-same-day-repairs-for-busted-galaxy-phones-across-the-us/ https://briefnews.eu/samsung-is-offering-same-day-repairs-for-busted-galaxy-phones-across-the-us/#respond Wed, 14 Mar 2018 19:46:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/samsung-is-offering-same-day-repairs-for-busted-galaxy-phones-across-the-us/

Samsung wants to make it easier to get your broken Galaxy phone fixed. The electronics maker on Wednesday announced that it is partnering with uBreakiFix, an independent repairs chain, to bring same-day, in-person repair service for more users of various Galaxy handsets in the US.

The partnership goes into effect on Thursday, one day before Samsung’s new Galaxy S9 phone formally starts shipping. Samsung says it will cover “more than 300” authorized service locations in the US, which are said to reach “the majority of the continental US population, within a 30-mile radius.” uBreakiFix’s website says the company runs just under 380 stores across the country. Samsung and uBreakiFix say they plan to add “nearly 200” more authorized locations by early 2019.

The companies say they will welcome walk-in customers in addition to those who schedule an appointment online for free in-warranty repairs. Samsung says “most repairs” will be completed in two hours or less. Samsung typically puts a one-year manufacturer’s warranty on its Galaxy flagships. The company says out-of-warranty issues like liquid damage and corrosion won’t be eligible for same-day service but that other out-of-warranty damages, like cracked screens, can still be fixed at a uBreakiFix store. It won’t be free in that case, of course, but Samsung says all repairs from an authorized uBreakiFix store will be warranted for at least 90 days.

More generally, the partnership covers basic problems like front and back screen replacements, battery replacements, and repairs to charging ports, headphone jacks, and camera modules. uBreakiFix had previously offered Galaxy phone repairs, but because it’s now marketed as an authorized repair service, Samsung says the repair chain will only use Samsung parts and tools to fix these issues—the idea being that uBreakiFix will be more trustworthy than that random repair kiosk at your local mall or train station.

The partnership won’t cover every Galaxy phone ever made, but it does hit most Samsung flagship phones from the past four years: every Galaxy S flagship since the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy Note 5, and the Galaxy Note 8 are listed as eligible for same-day service from uBreakiFix off the bat.

Currently, Samsung sells an extended warranty service called “Premium Care” that costs $12 a month and offers in-home support and extra coverage against accidental damages. Those who weren’t enrolled were typically asked to call a Samsung representative for support and either ship their busted phone to a company facility or find their own repair service. Major mobile carriers in the US offer their own protection plans as well.
uBreakiFix previously partnered with Google to provide repair support for its Pixel phones.

uBreakiFix isn’t the only repair firm to gain this sort of authorization from Samsung—Best Buy offers a similar service in a handful of US states—but the partnership looks to bring a fairly sizable boost to the Galaxy maker’s customer service efforts. Samsung is far and away the most popular manufacturer of Android phones in the US, but like the rest of its peers, it hasn’t offered the kind of extensive support provided by Apple and its myriad “Genius Bars” across the country. This move appears to be a step in the right direction, though, and should lead to a little more convenience for clumsy Galaxy fans. Just consider buying a case first.

HomePod repairs cost nearly as much as a new speaker https://briefnews.eu/homepod-repairs-cost-nearly-as-much-as-a-new-speaker/ https://briefnews.eu/homepod-repairs-cost-nearly-as-much-as-a-new-speaker/#respond Mon, 12 Feb 2018 07:39:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/homepod-repairs-cost-nearly-as-much-as-a-new-speaker/

If you’re getting a HomePod, be sure to place it somewhere safe… depending on what you break, it might be expensive to get a fix. Apple has updated its support pages to reveal that an out-of-warranty HomePod repair will cost $ 279 (£269). Throw in the shipping fee ($ 20 US, or £13) for a mail-in repair and you’re not far off from the price of a brand new smart speaker. This is one of those times where the AppleCare extended warranty ($ 78 if you include the incident fee, or £68) may be the better value, at least if you’re in a household where an accident is a real possibility.

Thankfully, the power cable won’t cost such a hefty sum. The 9to5Mac team has learned that you’ll need to pay $ 29 (£25) to repair a damaged cord. That’s more than a detachable cord might have cost, but definitely easier to justify if your pet has gnawed the cable to oblivion.

In practice, you’re not nearly as likely to need a fix for a HomePod as you would for an iPhone or a Mac — it’s a stationary object in your home that you’ll rarely need to touch. However, you’ll definitely want to keep these costs in mind if you have young kids or otherwise think the speaker might take a tumble.

Pothole chaos REVEALED – Funding for repairs falls as breakdowns increase in the UK https://briefnews.eu/pothole-chaos-revealed-funding-for-repairs-falls-as-breakdowns-increase-in-the-uk/ https://briefnews.eu/pothole-chaos-revealed-funding-for-repairs-falls-as-breakdowns-increase-in-the-uk/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 02:37:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pothole-chaos-revealed-funding-for-repairs-falls-as-breakdowns-increase-in-the-uk/

Pothole-related breakdowns are on the rise in the UK.

During the final quarter of 2017 breakdowns caused by potholes increased by 11 per cent.

The RAC was called to 2,830 vehicles with faults likely caused by poor quality road surfaces between October and December, compared with 2,547 in the same period in 2016.

It was also reported by the firm that many of these roads were “hanging in the balance.”

The number of potholes in Britain could also rise in spring with cold and wet weather predicted to exacerbate the already poor road conditions.

There is a multitude of issues that can be caused by driving over potholes which include broken suspension springs, damaged shock absorbers and distorted wheels.

The RAC’s pothole index, based on a 12-month rolling average of breakdown numbers, indicates that road quality has steadily declined over the last year and a half.

Its chief engineer David Bizley believes most drivers will view the figures with concern.

He said: “Potholes are a menace for drivers and indeed for all road users.

“They represent a serious road safety risk and anyone who has driven into one will know it can be a frightening experience, not to say a potentially costly one.

“For those on two wheels it can be genuinely life-threatening.“

Yesterday, it was announced that motorways and major A-roads in England are receiving per mile than local roads maintained by councils.

It called on the Government to reduce the disparity so councils can tackle the £12 billion repair bill to bring local roads up to scratch, including fixing more potholes.
