  • A former FBI official who played a critical role in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation also helped relaunch the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email use as secretary of state, according to CNN.
  • Peter Strzok, who was removed from Mueller’s team last summer for making disparaging remarks about President Donald Trump, co-wrote the first draft of the letter Comey disclosed to the public just 11 days before the 2016 election.
  • Republicans have frequently criticized Strzok for exhibiting anti-Trump bias.

Peter Strzok, the counterintelligence veteran who has been at the center of Republicans’ claims of bias at the FBI against President Donald Trump, also played a key role in the FBI’s decision to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email use as secretary of state, just 11 days before the 2016 election, CNN reported Wednesday.

CNN said Strzok co-wrote the first draft of the letter that former FBI Director James Comey disclosed to the public in October 2016, announcing that the FBI had recovered thousands of Clinton’s emails and, as a result, would relaunch the probe into whether the then-Democratic presidential nominee should be criminally charged.

North Korea will reopen a communications channel with South Korea, it announced on Wednesday.

A North Korean official said on state television that the country will reopen the suspended inter-Korean communication line later today, at approximately 6:30 a.m. GMT.

The official was Ri Son-kwon, the head of North Korea’s agency that handles inter-Korean affairs. He said Kim Jong Un had made the request to allow for discussions about sending a delegation to February’s Winter Olympics in South Korea.

There are reports that the statement also touched on creating close ties with South Korea,

The dialogue channel will be reactivated at the Panmunjeom, the “truce village” where South Korea offered to hold talks between the two countries on January 9.

The press secretary for South Korea’s president indicated this is a move towards regular contact between the two countries.

“I believe it signals a move toward an environment where communication will be possible at all times,” Yoon Young-chan told press, reported Yonhap.

According to Korea’s flagship public international broadcaster KBS, South Korea’s Unification Ministry attempted to contact North Korea at 9 a.m. on Tuesday via the hotline at Panmunjom, but got no response.

The channel between the two countries was cut by North Korea in February 2016, after Seoul closed a joint commercial project in response to the North’s rocket launches.

The announcement comes two days after Kim Jong Un said he would be open to disussions with South Korea about the Olympics.

News also emerged today that Kim’s announcement came just a month after repeated contact attempts by South Korea. Among a small number of meetings last month, officials from both countries had a two hour discussion about the Olympics on the sideline of a football competition in China last month.

During that speech, Kim also said he had a “nuclear button” on his desk. Today, US President Donald Trump responded by saying he also had a nuclear button that is “bigger and more powerful.”

Reopening Old Wounds https://briefnews.eu/reopening-old-wounds/ https://briefnews.eu/reopening-old-wounds/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 02:26:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/reopening-old-wounds/

Sexual misconduct allegations in the political world are reopening old wounds for Democrats, who want to support women speaking out but are being forced to contend with the party’s own tainted history.

In recent weeks, several women have accused Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore of sexually inappropriate behavior ranging from assault to harassment of teenage girls. Democrats have sided with women coming out against Moore, just as they did last year with women who made allegations against now-president Trump. But they now have had to answer for their own colleague: Minnesota Democratic Sen. Al Franken, who has been accused by two women of groping.

And lingering beneath the present allegations is how Democrats deal with former President Bill Clinton, still broadly popular among Democratic voters but carrying lingering baggage over his own handling of sexual misconduct allegations and scandal before and during his presidency.

Democrats have called for an ethics investigation into Franken, who has said he will “gladly cooperate,” but strategists say there’s no “master strategy” of how to respond to questions about Clinton, which are already coming at a growing clip. Incumbents and candidates across the country will make their own calculations about how they want to answer for their party’s former leader nearly two decades later. And some of them will be in the position of doing so just a year after campaigning alongside the former president during his wife’s presidential campaign.

Some who have been asked directly — including New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who now occupies Hillary Clinton’s old seat in the Senate, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who ran Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate campaign — are no longer mincing words.

Asked in an interview with the New York Times if Clinton should have stepped down after it was revealed he’d conducted an affair with a White House intern, Gillibrand, who is considered a potential 2020 presidential candidate, paused and said, “Yes, I think that is the appropriate response.” In response to a similar question during a Monday press conference, De Blasio said, “I don’t think you can rework history,” but added, “If any president did that today, they would have to resign.”

Guy Cecil, who led Hillary Clinton’s super PAC Priorities USA last year and helped lead her campaign in 2008, said, “Democrats and Republicans should both be cautious of turning allegations into some partisan weapon,” but added that it’s fine for Democrats “to reconsider what outcome should have come out of” the accusations against Clinton.

“Our country is reckoning with something that is frankly too long delayed,” Cecil said. “As a partisan, it is my job to win elections and defeat the other side. As a human being, we would all be wise to think about how we approach this and hold people to the same standard. I think it’s OK for people to have questions about former presidents and allegations against current presidents.”

Marcy Stech, a Democratic strategist who helped Clinton’s 2016 campaign as a vice president at Emily’s List, said “assault and harassment are inexcusable by anyone from any background ever, full stop,” adding that there’s been a “growing distinction in how Democrats and Republicans are handling what comes after these revelations.”

Over the weekend, as Clinton’s name resurfaced in headlines about sexual assault allegations, dozens of former aides and advisers from his White House traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1992 presidential election alongside the couple. The gathering, which featured a rare joint Q&A with Bill and Hillary Clinton, only seemed to highlight the difficult and uncomfortable moment suddenly facing Clinton alumni.

On Monday, several former advisers and staffers declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment on how they believe Democrats should now reconcile with their party’s past. Privately, members of the Clinton orbit have addressed the topic with caution, with some admitting they are genuinely unsure of how to address the renewed questions surrounding the former president.

Philippe Reines, a longtime Clinton loyalist, attacked Gillibrand on Twitter for her comments against Clinton last week, but others remained silent.

“In this day and age, we have no other option but to talk about it as forthright and candidly as possible,” said Jim Manley, a Democratic strategist who has worked for top Democrats in the Senate.

“I’m not so sure folks are going to be as strident as Philippe, but the Clintons aren’t going to get as many breaks anymore,” Manley added. “Times have changed and obviously for the better. And this stuff just isn’t going to be tolerated. There are far too many women who have seats at the table, and they are more than willing to speak up.”

Times have changed for the Clintons in another significant way: For the first time in 40 years, neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton is weighing elected office. The current reckoning around past sexual harassment comes when the family is no longer at the peak of its political powers, and therefore easier to step out against.

At the same time, Democrats like Gillibrand who may be eyeing a 2020 bid risk alienating the network of Clinton donors and political allies by condemning them or their legacy too vigorously. Bill Clinton has personally helped fundraise for many Democrats, Gillibrand included.

Adrienne Elrod, a former spokeswoman for Clinton’s campaign, said Monday in an MSNBC interview that the debate about the past detracts from the stories that women are exposing.

“It’s important to focus on giving these women, who are finally able and feeling brave to come out and speak,” Elrod said, “it’s important to give them that platform and give them that space.”

US cuts funds for pollution reduction in reopening Harley-Davidson case https://briefnews.eu/us-cuts-funds-for-pollution-reduction-in-reopening-harley-davidson-case/ https://briefnews.eu/us-cuts-funds-for-pollution-reduction-in-reopening-harley-davidson-case/#respond Sat, 22 Jul 2017 03:55:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-cuts-funds-for-pollution-reduction-in-reopening-harley-davidson-case/ Harley-Davidson was fined $ 15 million last year for selling devices that shut down emissions controls on its motorcycles, but now, they’re saving at least $ 3 million under cuts to a government program targeting pollution.

The administration of President Donald Trump said Thursday that Harley-Davidson no longer had to pay $ 3 million to fund a service for the American Lung Association of the North East’s wood-fire stove project that would have funded vouchers for low-income households to replace their old stoves with updated ones. A new consent decree was proposed in federal court on Thursday that officially erased the longstanding policy.

Harley-Davidson is still liable for the other $ 12 million in penalties, but none of that will go to the program.

Harley-Davidson is being punished from last year’s case involving the Obama administration’s consent decree that stated the company sold 340,000 ‘Screamin-Eagle’ aftermarket devices that increased engine performance, but also increased emissions from the motorcycles.

These rules were put in place by an Obama-era anti-pollution penalty that makes polluters pay for community or environmental projects, which would run alongside the fines and direct compensation to those victimized by the pollution, according to the New York Times.

Last month, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions notified the Justice Department to stop the longstanding practice of forcing polluters to fund separate projects with a portion of a case’s settlement money, and have it, instead, allocated to the Federal Treasury, or to the victims of the wrongdoing. A bill currently circulating in Congress would do just that.

Initially, Sessions had said that this new rule would only apply to future cases.

A prime example of these policies coming into play in the past, is the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill by BP. To settle the claims, BP had to cough up billions of dollars to fund coastal restoration projects that had no relation to the oil spill. In the past, critics have said that the rules ultimately creates “slush funds” for preferred causes and organizations, the New York Times reported.

On the other hand, health and environmental groups spoke of their disappointment with the new rules. The money “absolutely” would have made a clear effect on reducing air pollution in the northeast, Michael Seilback, vice president for public policy at the American Lung Association, said.

“We were looking forward to moving forward with the project,” he said, according to the Times.

In February, executives from Harley visited the White House and met with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

“What a great, great group of people and what a fantastic job you do,” Trump said to the executives. “And thank you for all of the votes you gave me in Wisconsin.”

This is the first case of Trump reversing an Obama-era emissions settlement, according to The Hill.

The Vote Over Evo 2017’s Ninth Fighting Game Is Reopening Old Wounds https://briefnews.eu/the-vote-over-evo-2017s-ninth-fighting-game-is-reopening-old-wounds/ https://briefnews.eu/the-vote-over-evo-2017s-ninth-fighting-game-is-reopening-old-wounds/#respond Tue, 31 Jan 2017 23:54:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-vote-over-evo-2017s-ninth-fighting-game-is-reopening-old-wounds/

This year, the Evolution Championship Series is giving nine fighting games the chance of a lifetime. The game that raises the most money for Make-a-Wish International (a non-profit organization dedicated to making the dreams of children with life-threatening conditions reality) will earn a spot during the prestigious Sunday finals. But with Evo 2017 donations in full swing, the tensions and disappointments of past years have resurfaced.

The games up for voting this year include previous entrants Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Pokkén Tournament, Mortal Kombat X, Killer Instinct, and even the iconic Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Evo is the largest and most important fighting game tournament in the world; as such, the disparate subgenres of the fighting game community wait with bated breath every year to see if their favorite games are included in the official lineup. The Evo organizers periodically go out of their way to open a spot to community voting and help a worthy cause at the same time.

While the donation drive has been cordial over the past week, things were a bit more heated the last time such a campaign was organized in 2013. The fanatical Super Smash Bros. Melee community (which had been absent from the tournament series since the game’s 2007 debut) had moved to the front of the pack almost immediately, but it faced stiff competition from indie darling Skullgirls. The results would affect not only Evo 2013 but the entire fighting game community for years to come.

Developed in part by longtime competitor Mike Zaimont, Skullgirls was embraced by a small but dedicated group of players when it launched in 2012. But even with its pedigree, the indie darling failed to make a splash in the Capcom-dominated fighting game community. When Skullgirls was included in the Evo 2013 vote, its fans were not about to let the opportunity pass them by. Melee, on the other hand, was in decline. Many saw inclusion at Evo 2013 as the next step to reviving the stagnant community.

As 2013’s fundraising drew to a close, the fighting game community had contributed over $ 225,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, with Melee’s $ 94,000 in donations beating out the $ 49,000 contributed by Skullgirls players. Last-minute pushes resulted in around $ 120,000 being raised during the final day alone. But even as spirits were lifted by these charitable donations, the contest felt largely unfair for the games left out of Evo 2013. Arguments concerning who deserved to be at Evo more, inspired by the fundraising competition, had left an indelible mark on the larger community.

“During the course of this competition, people seemed to forget that this is real money,” Zaimont said during an emotional, post-campaign speech. “Between Skullgirls and Melee, we raised $ 160,000 for breast cancer research. That is absolutely amazing. The fighting game community has a unique history; we are the worst enemies when we’re playing against each other, but when we’re done, we’re the best of friends. I saw a bunch of hate from all communities during the course of this contest, so I want to remind everyone that, at the end of the day, we are all part of the fighting game community.”

Despite an often shaky relationship with traditional fighting games, Melee was once again going to be part of the genre’s largest competition. In the years since, the Smash community has seen a ridiculous resurgence, growing from a fading memory to a staple of Evo competition. Skullgirls, unfortunately, was never able to make the main stage, but players carved out their own niche at events like the Chicago-based Combo Breaker. Despite the controversial addition of Injustice: Gods Among Us (which only raised $ 77 in the same donation drive) to the Evo 2013 lineup later on, the Skullgirls community has never let the emotional weight of these repeated snubs define them, and they continue to thrive by forging their own path.

With Evo 2017 donations in full swing, this year’s competition still carries the weight of 2013. Although Skullgirls is included in this year’s campaign, the players have largely ignored Evo’s calls for contributions, providing only $ 672 in the past week. Despite the money going to a good cause, some see another attempt at Evo recognition as a pipe dream not worth pursuing. The lingering emotions of years past have only served to sour some community members on the entire campaign, and an unhealthy, Evo-centric atmosphere has permeated through the rest.

Just like in 2013, a different pair of games is now slugging it out for the honor of being featured at Mandalay Bay. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Pokkén Tournament are two rather interesting cases. The former has been mainstay at Evo since its 2011 release, and the latter saw over 1,000 competitors during its debut last year. The announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite has put an expiration date on Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s lifespan. Meanwhile, a lack of developer support has made hope in Pokkén Tournament an all-too-rare commodity.

Both games have legitimate claims to another appearance, whether as a swan song before a new title launches or as thanks for showing up in such large number at Evo 2016. Fortunately, fundraising has been quite amicable compared to the drive in 2013, but some in the fighting game community still question whether this kind of vote is the best way to choose games for such an event, especially with the divisions it’s encouraged in the past. The inclusion of joke entries, like unreleased Switch title ARMS and cult classic Windjammers, over games with healthy communities further serves to undermine Evo’s importance.

When all is said and done, Evo 2017 is sure to be a spectacular tournament. But as the fighting game community continues to expand, Evo’s status has changed. Where it was once considered the pinnacle of competition, it now functions as more of a celebration of the genre. The competitive nature of Evo’s fundraising drive has inspired some communities, like Mortal Kombat X, to bow out altogether in favor of organizing dedicated side tournaments. The gap separating Evo and other high-caliber events is growing smaller and smaller, and players disappointed by their experiences at Evo have a huge number of similarly important tournaments they can attend across the world instead.

Like Skullgirls, it’s important for players who find themselves on the outside looking in to not let occasional tunnel vision define their futures. Should Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 miss out on Evo 2017, it still has tournaments like Undefeated and Curleh Mustache (not to mention and the impending release of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite) to fall back on. Pokkén Tournament has been welcomed with open arms by east coast organizers Larry “Shin Blanka” Dixon and Eric “Big E” Smalls despite a dearth of attention by its creators. And Killer Instinct, which currently sits in a distant third place, continues to earn outstanding support from developer Iron Galaxy Studios and enjoys regular high-level competition because of it. Games that don’t make it into Evo can still flourish.

The fighting game community is different from other eSports scenes due to the sheer number of titles huddled under its umbrella. Sometimes it can be hard to find the space a game’s community feels it deserves, especially with so much real estate being given to bigger franchises. But, like Zaimont said in 2013, everyone contributes to making the greater community what it is, from the 5,000 competitors duking it out in Street Fighter V at Evo 2016 to the Melty Blood diehards playing off a tiny laptop screen in the parking lot. To survive, concessions need to be made, especially at a tournament as important as Evo, but it’s also important to diversify the attention granted to underrepresented games and events. Asking, “Which games deserve to be at Evo?” only works to widen the cracks that naturally form between passionate communities.
