  • The landlord was arrested under the country’s counter-terrorism law, which took effect in early 2016.
  • And while the law makes no mention of prohibitions against renting property to Uighurs, the minority group is often racially profiled, and is subjected to some of the strictest surveillance measures in the world. 

A Chinese landlord was arrested on terror charges for renting out his home to ethnic Uighurs, as the government continues to expand its surveillance of members of the minority group.

Police in central China’s Henan province arrested a Han Chinese man who had privately rented out his home in Zhenping county to three Uighur bread-sellers, according to a notice released by the Zhenping county police obtained by Radio Free Asia.

Do you still partake of physical media for movies – and have you made the leap to 4K? If so, Redbox has some good news: they’re going to start renting 4K movies…but only for certain titles, and in certain markets.

With so many streaming options available, it can be easy to forget that Redbox is still out there renting out physical copies. But they are, and now they’re trying to sweeten the pot. Per Variety, Redbox “is now offering 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc rentals — but it’s starting with only four titles, available in limited quantities in just six U.S. markets.”

Those 4 titles are:

  • Black Panther, a little Marvel movie you may have heard of from director Ryan Coogler.
  • The Commuter, Jaume Collet-Serra‘s latest “Liam Neeson kicks some ass” film.
  • The Martian, a Ridley Scott movie about Matt Damon growing potatoes in space.
  • The Matrix, the game-changing sci-fi flick from the Wachowskis.

These 4K titles will be available at 2,500 Redbox kiosks in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin, Detroit, and Miami, and renting them will cost you $ 2.50 a pop, which is a bit more than the $ 1.75 charge for DVDs and the $ 2 rental fee for regular Blu-rays.

This is essentially a test-run for Redbox, as they plan to offer more 4K titles in the future, including Red Sparrow, Pacific Rim Uprising, and the new Tomb Raider movie that everyone already forgot about.

I suppose the question now is: do you care? While I remain a strong proponent of physical media, I also know that most people seem to be content with streaming their entertainment. Streaming quality has improved greatly over the years, but Blu-ray still looks better, and 4K looks even better than that. But it seems as if only a certain group of people actually care about that – they choose convenience over quality. As for the people who do prefer physical media to streaming, I feel like they tend to buy their physical media rather than rent it. (Redbox also offers On Demand titles, but that’s still the beta stage.)

Redbox is counting on movie watchers wanting to rent 4K discs in addition to purchasing them, though, which is why they’re rolling this idea out. “We wanted titles that would have high interest going forward — they’re all action-related and incredibly visually stunning,” said Redbox CEO Galen Smith. “As a consumer, I want to pay a slight premium to get the best possible experience.”

Once the 4K titles begin to be rented, Redbox will “use the data it collects to calibrate inventory and distribution of 4K titles”, so if this idea works out, you can expect even more 4K discs to appear in more and more Redbox kiosks.

A jury found body broker Arthur Rathburn guilty on Monday of illegally renting out diseased human body parts and heads to unwitting doctors. He faces up to 20 years in prison for eight crimes, including wire fraud and illegally transporting hazardous materials.

Federal prosecutors alleged that from January 2007 to December 2013, Rathburn, 63, and his wife Elizabeth ran a corrupt body brokering company called International Biological, Inc (IBI). For the grisly scheme, Rathburn dismembered cadavers with a chainsaw, band saw, and reciprocating saw. He haphazardly piled parts and heads—flesh on flesh—amid pools of blood and shipped them in wrapped in trash bags in camping coolers.

Elizabeth, meanwhile, managed rental orders from clients who used the heads and parts for medical and dental training. All the while, the pair hid the fact that they often bought diseased bodies at bargain rates and made thousands renting individual parts that they knew to be contaminated with HIV, hepatitis, and other diseases.

The increasing popularity of the website could also threaten affordable accommodation for ordinary renters.

An estate agent in Tunbridge Wells in Kent has seen homes in desirable areas selling for £30,000 more because of the holiday let potential, which offers landlords more than £100 a week above conventional renting.

As many as 135,000 properties across England and Wales are now owned by so-called Airbnb landlords, according to a survey by the Residential Landlords Association.

It revealed a 57 per cent increase in the number of landlords who intend to bypass conventional letting agencies in favour of online sites such as Airbnb as a business model.

Seven per cent of all property owners who let now intend to use Airbnb and similar companies.

Fifty-five per cent said it was because they could get much higher rental yields through Airbnb, 36 per cent said it was because of Government changes to mortgage interest relief and 33 per cent said it was because of increasing Government regulation, such as buy-to-let clampdowns.

Critics said this makes a mockery of Government attempts to boost housing stocks by clamping down on buy-to-let rules.

RLA chairman Alan Ward said: “With ever growing demand for rented accommodation, the country cannot afford to face the potential loss of almost 135,000 homes to rent in the long term. This number will almost certainly grow with the phased introduction of the tax increases.

“We believe in a free market but the Government must consider the impact of its tax measures if landlords are moving property from long-term rental into the holiday market.”

David Cox, of the property consumer watchdog Arla, said yesterday: “These figures don’t surprise me. It is the unintended consequence of years of governments attacking private landlords.”

He added: “There is a growing disquiet over the use of agencies such as Airbnb.

“You don’t know who your neighbour is and there is the security risk – how many keys and access codes are being given out?”

Airbnb said: “A typical host welcomes guests for fewer than four nights a month.”

It seems inevitable that sooner, rather than later, electrified vehicles will begin to dominate on the world’s roads, replacing their gasoline-burning counterparts. Countries such as France and Great Britain have pledged to ban the sale of new vehicles with conventional diesel and gasoline engines by 2040. That same year, electric vehicles are predicted to make up more than half of the new-vehicle market. This summer, the official reveal of  the Tesla Model 3 received much media gushing, with the car portrayed as an EV for the masses that the masses seem to really want. More than half a million $ 1000 deposits have been thrown down for a car that most buyers won’t get until sometime in 2018 or maybe even later. And yet, when it comes to car rentals, the masses still seem uninterested in electrification.

Both Enterprise and Hertz, the two largest U.S. car-rental companies, confirmed to Car and Driver that they have been reducing their fleet of EVs because of a lack of demand. Avis, which is in third place, does not offer any fully electric vehicles for rent. One big reason for soft EV-rental demand is low fuel prices. But Kurt Kohler, senior vice president of fleet acquisition and remarketing for Enterprise in North America, pointed to some other factors that underscore how far a broader adoption of electrification has yet to go in the United States.

Kohler said most customers who have rented electric cars have been impressed by the way they drive. He said consumers have commented that the cars are “very peppy, very responsive.” However, some of those same customers have often rented EVs for a seven-day period, only to bring them back after a couple of days to swap them out for vehicles with internal-combustion engines.

Typical reasons for the early trade-off include range anxiety, a dearth of charging infrastructure outside the country’s EV hotspots, and even just a general lack of understanding of how and when to recharge the battery. That’s despite the rental companies allowing consumers to return EVs with as much or as little battery life left as they please, as opposed to demanding a full fuel tank in internal-combustion cars coming back from rental. Enterprise’s own charging infrastructure at its 5800 U.S. neighborhood (non-airport, non-urban) rental locations is “minimal,” Kohler said. The company as a whole has only about 300 EVs for rent, most of which are found at city and airport locations where recharging is easier. With some 1.9 million vehicles in service worldwide, the company considers itself a decent barometer of consumer taste.

At one point, Enterprise had about 500 Nissan Leaf electric cars for rent in the United States. Its total EV rental count now is dominated by the Tesla Model S, which is part of the company’s specialty, higher-end Exotic Car Collection, offered only in select locations. Enterprise also has about 30,000 hybrid vehicles in its fleet. With regular-grade gasoline currently averaging less than $ 2.50 a gallon, even these hybrid rentals have seen lukewarm demand. “Nobody’s really telling us, ‘Hey, I need to drive a hybrid,’ ” Kohler said.

If gas prices spike and EVs suddenly become the rentals du jour, Kohler said Enterprise could adapt. “If [customers] start asking for more of them, I think we feel like, structurally, we could pivot pretty quickly and make sure we have the right cars for them.” But for the moment, he added, “Everybody’s asking for trucks and SUVs.”

GM is expanding the presence of its Zipcar-style service Maven in Australia. The company has begun testing Maven Gig in Sydney through a pilot program with Uber a few months after it started trialing the main Maven service in Melbourne. Unlike the primary service itself that offers the general public vehicles for rent, Maven Gig was designed to rent out GM cars to people doing freelance gigs, such as driving for ride-hailing companies and package, food or grocery delivery. For now, the automaker is focusing on entering leasing agreements with those who’d like to make money on the side driving for Uber.

Before the pilot started, Maven Gig was only available in San Diego, though it’s slated to be launched in San Francisco and Los Angeles in late 2017. GM’s Australian division didn’t tell Reuters how much its vehicles would cost customers. But in the US, renting a Chevy Bolt from the Gig program would cost an Uber driver $ 229 for a week.

Grey Gardens has gone corporate. The home — perhaps one of the most infamous in the Hamptons — will be rented all summer long by American Express, which plans to use it for special events, according to the New York Post.

Three-Michelin-starred restaurant Eleven Madison Park is said to be involved in the deal, but details, including the monthly rental price, are scarce. 

It’s still up for sale with a discounted price of $ 17.995 million — $ 2 million less than the owners of the home originally asked for when it listed in February. The Corcoran Group has the listing.

Anyone who saw the “Grey Gardens” documentary or Broadway play would likely balk at living in the home it was inspired by. After all, the home was in incredibly poor shape during the filming of the documentary, and it’s even rumored to be haunted.

However, the East Hampton mansion now looks nothing like it did in the 1975 documentary that showcased the lives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ ex-socialite relatives.

Journalist and author Sally Quinn purchased the mansion with her husband, the late Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, for $ 220,000 in 1979. They completely rehabilitated it to its current splendor, according to The New York Times.

The home has the slate exterior of a typical Hamptons home.
