Enlarge / Train up: Iron Fist‘s second season premieres on Netflix on September 7. (credit: Netflix)
You’d be forgiven for losing track of so many Marvel’s Defenders series and characters on Netflix over the past few years—particularly if you let its weakest standalone series, Iron Fist, fall through your viewing queue. But thanks to the new trailer for Iron Fist’s second season, which arrived on Thursday, we may have good reason to get excited when this Defender returns to Netflix on September 7.
(Mild spoilers for IF S1 and Defenders below.)
Hopes for a more compelling Iron Fist took a while to come to fruition: sometime through the first Defenders season, when Danny “Iron Fist” Rand (Finn Jones) received a verbal beatdown from Luke Cage (“You had power the day you were born”). That potential was fulfilled when Rand guested in Luke Cage‘s second season. This downright likable two-episode arc delivered what was arguably missing from his series’ first season: a sense of deeper personal growth, even as he overcame tremendous physical odds to become the Iron Fist.

It turns out there’s some good left to do by the power of the internet after all.
Earlier this week, fans of the FOX comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine raised hell when the network decided not to renew the series for a sixth season. Of course this was hardly a surprising action from the network that previously canceled championed series like Family Guy, Firefly and Arrested Development. But FOX’s loss has become another network’s gain.
NBC announced late last night that they would be picking up Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a sixth season of 13 episodes. That’s a shorter season than Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans are used to, but surely they’re just glad to have the show coming back.
Executive producers Dan Goor and Michael Schur announced the news on Twitter last night, and they gave full credit to the fans for getting this show saved:
Hey everyone, just wanted to say no big deal but….
NBC JUST PICKED #BROOKLYN99 UP FOR SEASON 6!!!
Thanks in no small part to you, the best fans in the history of the world!Nine-nine!!!!!!!!!

This happened because the fans of the show went berzerk. We can't thank you — or @NBC — enough. #Brooklyn99

NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt released a statement announcing the renewal:
“Ever since we sold this show to Fox I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home. Mike Schur, Dan Goor, and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC and we’re all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and best cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy line-up. I speak for everyone at NBC, here’s to the Nine-Nine!”
The cast of the series also celebrated on Twitter with statements of their own:
Thank you to everyone for the crazy outpouring of support. It means the world to us. It wouldn’t have happened without you.

Though Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs on FOX, it’s a co-production between 3Arts Entertainment and Universal Television, which is part of the of the NBCUniversal Television Group. So that fact that NBC saved the series from cancellation is all too appropriate. After all, the series always felt like a show destined for NBC but ended up accidentally airing on FOX.
What’s great about Brooklyn Nine-Nine is that even though it can be a totally goofy comedy, it has also tackled some pretty serious topics, including police corruption and racial profiling. On top of that, the cast is one of the most diverse on television. This really is a show that deserves to be saved, and I’m glad we’ll be getting at least one more season out of it. Even though the order is for only 13 episodes, NBC could always order more down the road.
The new season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will come to NBC sometime in the 2018-2019 television season.

Praise be, The Handmaid’s Tale is coming back for another season. Hulu has greenlit The Handmaid’s Tale season 3, renewing the soul-crushing, Emmy-winning series just after the streaming service hit a whopping 20 million U.S. subscribers.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 made a record-breaking premiere last week, drawing in double the audience numbers of the season 1 opener, according to Deadline. In lieu of the critical and commercial success of the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning show, it was no question that Hulu would renew The Handmaid’s Tale for season 3.
This would take the series even further from the Margaret Atwood novel upon which it’s based. The first season of The Handmaid’s Tale ended where the book ended, and season 2 has been boldly striking out beyond its former creative limitations. I wrote in my review of the sophomore season of The Handmaid’s Tale that the show was finally making strides to become its own show beyond Atwood’s book.
Buoyed by its razor-sharp focus on its female characters, The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 surpasses its first season. Though it does sometimes give in to the show’s penchant for political awkwardness and has prolonged, miserable scenes that could rival Game of Thrones‘ torture porn, it seems like the Hulu series is all the better for stepping out from the shadow of Atwood’s book.
But the series is so bleak that I wonder how far season 3 can go without losing its audience. Season 2 has already pushed the limit on emotional trials, and I imagine the third season would double down on the show’s distressing mood. Elisabeth Moss and the rest of the cast continue to give brilliant performances, but season 3 would have to drastically change things up in order to maintain the show’s critically acclaimed streak.
Hulu has consistently pushed complex, compelling original series like The Handmaid’s Tale and this year’s The Looming Tower, and it seems like Hulu’s commitment to quality original content is paying off. The streaming service hit a major milestone this week, passing 20 million subscribers in North America.
Hulu CEO Randy Freer said of the encouraging numbers:
“Hulu is the complete TV experience for consumers, offering both live and on-demand programming and more consumer choice than ever before.”
And Hulu will expand its slate of original content even more, picking up new series orders for Four Weddings and a Funeral and Ramy. These new series orders will join the highly anticipated upcoming Hulu originals Castle Rock, Catch-22, and Little Fires Everywhere.

That was fast: HBO has renewed Barry for a second season, the network announced on Thursday. The pickup comes just three weeks into the Bill Hader hitman comedy’s freshman run.
In addition, the premium cabler has renewed Silicon Valley for Season 6, ensuring that their Sunday night comedy lineup remains intact.
“While Barry has delighted audiences with its deft interplay of comedy and drama, Silicon Valley remains as brilliantly and frighteningly prescient as ever,” Amy Gravitt, Executive VP of HBO Programming, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that these two smart, funny shows are returning for another season.”
Barry and Silicon Valley‘s respective first and fifth seasons conclude on Sunday, May 13. Are you happy about these renewals?

BOAO, China — Chinese President Xi Jinping promised on Tuesday to open the country’s economy further and lower import tariffs on products starting with cars, in a speech seen as an attempt to defuse an escalating trade dispute with the United States.
While most of the pledges were reiterations of previously announced reforms, which foreign businesses complain are long overdue, Xi’s comments sent stock markets and the dollar higher on hopes of a compromise that could avert a trade war.
Xi said that China will sharply widen market access for foreign investors, a chief complaint of the country’s trading partners and a point of contention for U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which has threatened billions of dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods.
“President Xi’s speech appears to have struck a relatively positive tone and opens the door to potential negotiations with the U.S. in our view. The focus now shifts to the possible U.S. response,” economists at Nomura said.
“But of course actions speak louder than words. We will keep an eye on the progress of those opening-up measures.”
The speech at the Boao Forum for Asia in the southern province of Hainan had been widely anticipated as one of Xi’s first major addresses in a year in which the ruling Communist Party marks the 40th anniversary of its landmark economic reforms and opening up under former leader Deng Xiaoping.
Xi said China would raise the foreign ownership limit in the automobile, shipbuilding and aircraft sectors “as soon as possible,” and push previously announced measures to open the financial sector.
“This year, we will considerably reduce auto import tariffs, and at the same time reduce import tariffs on some other products,” Xi said.
He also said “Cold War mentality” and arrogance had become obsolete and would be repudiated. His speech did not specifically mention the United States or its trade policies, which have been assailed by Chinese state media in recent days.
Vice Premier Liu He had already vowed at the World Economic Forum in January that China would roll out fresh market opening moves this year, and that it would lower auto import tariffs in an “orderly way.”
Chinese officials have been promising since at least 2013 to ease restrictions on foreign joint ventures in the auto industry, which would allow foreign firms to take a majority stake. They currently are limited to a 50 percent stake in joint ventures and cannot establish their own wholly owned factories.
Tesla’s Chief Executive Elon Musk has railed against an unequal playing field in China and wants to retain full ownership over a manufacturing facility the company is in talks to build there.
“This is a very important action by China. Avoiding a trade war will benefit all countries,” Musk tweeted after Xi’s speech.
Foreign business groups welcomed Xi’s commitment to reforms, including promises to strengthen legal deterrence on intellectual property violators, but said the speech fell short on specifics.
“Ultimately U.S. industry will be looking for implementation of long-stalled economic reforms, but actions to date have greatly undermined the optimism of the U.S. business community,” said Jacob Parker, vice president of China operations at the U.S.-China Business Council.
Jonas Short, head of the Beijing office at Everbright Sun Hung Kai, said the market was cheered by Xi’s speech because it was framed in more positive terms which could ease trade tensions, but he voiced caution about promised reforms.
“China is opening sectors where they already have a distinct advantage, or a stranglehold over the sector,” Short said, citing its banking industry, which is dominated by domestic players.
Xi’s renewed pledges to open up the auto sector come after Trump on Monday criticized China on Twitter for maintaining 25 percent auto import tariffs compared to the United States’ 2.5 percent duties, calling such a relationship with China not free trade but “stupid trade.”
Analysts have cautioned that any Chinese concessions on autos, while welcome, would be a relatively easy win for China to offer the United States, as plans for opening that sector had been under way well before Trump took office.
But Vice Commerce Minister Qian Keming said at the forum on Tuesday that China’s economic reforms were driven by domestic factors and not due to external pressures.
Xi also said China would speed up opening up of its insurance industry, with Shanghai Securities News citing a government researcher after the speech saying foreign investors should be able to hold a controlling stake or even full ownership of an insurance company in the future.
Trump’s move last week to threaten China with tariffs on $ 50 billion in Chinese goods was aimed at forcing Beijing to address what Washington says is deeply entrenched theft of U.S. intellectual property and forced technology transfers from U.S. companies.
Chinese officials deny such charges, and responded within hours of Trump’s announcement of tariffs with their own proposed commensurate duties.
The move prompted Trump last week to threaten tariffs on an additional $ 100 billion in Chinese goods, which have yet to be identified. None of the announced duties have been implemented yet, offering room for negotiation.
Beijing charges that Washington is the aggressor and spurring global protectionism, although China’s trading partners have complained for years that it abuses World Trade Organization rules and practices unfair industrial policies that lock foreign companies out of crucial sectors with the intent of creating domestic champions.
While U.S. officials, including Trump, have recently expressed optimism that the two sides would hammer out a trade deal, Chinese officials in recent days have said negotiations would be impossible under “current circumstances.”
Dallas Federal Reserve Bank President Robert Kaplan, on a visit to Beijing, said he was optimistic that very few if any of the proposed tariffs by the United States and China announced in recent weeks will actually be implemented.
“I think it’s so clearly in the interest of both countries that we have a constructive trading relationship and that we have substantive talks to redress these issues.”

Continuing to expand their seemingly endless library of streaming titles, Netflix has renewed a batch of their unscripted programming shows for second seasons. The nerdy documentary series The Toys That Made Us, focusing on some of the most iconic toys from pop culture history is among them, as is the reboot of Queer Eye (no longer just for the straight guy).
The first half of the first season of The Toys That Made Us hit Netflix late last year, covering the likes of Star Wars, Barbie, G.I. Joe and Masters of the Universe. Meanwhile, the rest of the first season will arrive sometime this spring, focusing on Transformers, Hello Kitty, LEGO and Star Trek.
The series executive produced by Brian Volk-Weiss, Tom Stern, Cisco Henson, Anne Carkeet and Edwin Zane takes a close look at the history of the toys in question and how they influenced pop culture and became collectible sensations for kids and adults alike. There’s no indication as to what toys the second season will feature, or when it will arrive, but it’ll be nice to take a deep dive into even more of the toys we love.

Meanwhile, the reboot of Queer Eye on Netflix has been getting plenty of praise across the board, so it should come as no surprise that the series is being given a second season.
For those unfamiliar, the cast features a new Fab Five composed of Antoni Porowski, food and wine expert; Tan France, fashion expert; Karamo Brown, culture expert; Bobby Berk, design expert and Jonathan Van Ness, grooming expert, and they all provide advice and guidance on how to live a stylish and satisfying life. But there’s also a wonderful emotional core to the show that just might surprise you.

Taking a cue from the meme of everyday people trying to replicate incredible, edible works of art with hilariously disastrous results, Nailed It! follows several home bakers trying to recreate amazing food masterpieces in an effort to win $ 10,000. They’ve proven to not be very good at this task before, so the results should be rather hilarious, basically the opposite of Master Chef or other shows like it.

The rest of the shows renewed for second seasons are a little more serious and dramatic in their subject matter.
Dope is a documentary series taking a look at the criminal underworld of dealing drugs from the perspective of those selling them, their buyers and the police trying to stop them.
Meanwhile, Drug Lords dives into the higher echelon of the drug market by focusing on history’s most notorious drug kingpins, not unlike a series you might find on The History Channel when they’re not focusing on World War II or aliens.

All of these shows are available to watch on Netflix now, adding to the 700+ titles that are coming to the streaming library throughout this year. So feel free to check them out if any of them intrigue you.

Amazon’s podcast-based series Lore will return for a second season. Production for the horror-tinged series begins in April, and in addition to new episodes, it’ll feature a new showrunner, Sean Crouch, who worked on The Exorcist series. There aren’t a ton of details, but Amazon promises that the new season will explore horror stories on a global level. Given the production timeline, it doesn’t seem like a stretch to assume the new episodes will be available by Halloween — just in time to compete with Hulu’s forthcoming macabre show.

Born out of a recurring sketch appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Apple’s Carpool Karaoke: The Series seems to be resonating with subscribers of Apple Music. Today during an investor call, CBS (the producer of the show) announced the show would return for a second season.
Carpool Karaoke: The Series is only available via an Apple Music subscription ($ 9.99 a month) and puts teams of celebrities in cars to sing along to their favorite hits. The first season paired up Alicia Keys and Chrissy Teigen’s husband John Legend, Shaquille O’Neal and John Cena, Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith and even James Corden (whose show the segment appeared on) appeared in two episodes: One with Will Smith, the other with Lebron James.
No word on who will be guest starring next season or when it will be available via the music subscription service. But, we’re really hoping for a Run the Jewels episode where they sing Queen songs.

]]>Netflix may be have ushered in the era of streaming, but it is not a completely benevolent savior. Though Netflix does giveth, it also cancels away the underperforming. So the throwback sequel series Fuller House must be doing something right, because the streaming company just renewed it for a fourth season.
Viewers can look forward to the whole adult gang (Danny, Joey, Jesse and Rebecca) moving back to San Francisco to be there for Kimmy’s pregnancy. (Spoilers?) No word yet on when the fourth season will be added, so stay tuned.
