Brexit will affect all Britons if a no-deal exit from the European Union (EU) takes place next year.

One way in which it will impact Britons is what will happen to British passports from March.

Last month the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) updated their travel advice for British passport holders in the unlikely event of the UK leaving the EU without a deal.

Anyone with fewer than 12 months left on their passport should renew the document now.

If not renewed, Britons could find themselves barred from travelling to countries in the EU.

“If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, after 29 March 2019, you’ll need at least six months left on your passport when you travel to most EU countries,” the FCO website stated.

“Most EU countries (though not the UK) are members of the Schengen Agreement,” explained the Home Office.

“This agreement removes passport checks and border controls at the borders between countries within the Schengen area. People can travel around the area as if it is one country.”

Before 29 March 2019, if you’re a British citizen, as an EU national, you’re currently able to enter the Schengen area if you have a valid passport.

“There’s no requirement for British passports to have a minimum or maximum validity period remaining when you enter or leave the Schengen area,” stated the Home Office.

However, after this March date, those without a passport with over six months left could be unable to travel to such favourite destinations as Spain, France, Greece, Germany, Italy and Portugal.

This is because, without a deal, British citizens could be treated the same as those from countries outside the EU in the borderless Schengen zone.

Other countries in the Schengen zone include; Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

However, even if your passport does have six months or more left on it, it will still need to be less than 10 years old.

The Home Office stated: “If you plan to travel to the Schengen area after 29 March 2019, to avoid any possibility of your adult British passport not complying with the Schengen Border Code we suggest that you check the issue date and make sure your passport is no older than nine years and six months on the day of travel.

“For example, if you’re planning to travel to the Schengen area on 30 March 2019, your passport should have an issue date on or after 1 October 2009.

“If your passport does not meet these criteria, you may be denied entry to any of the Schengen area countries, and you should renew your passport before you travel.”

After Britain leaves the EU the design of the British passport will change.

According to the Home Office: “Passports printed between 30 March 2019 up until the introduction of the new passport design will be burgundy but will not include the words ‘European Union’ on the front cover. This includes passports issued by the Crown Dependencies and Gibraltar.”

Blue passports will start being issued from late 2019. If you renew your passport between late 2019 and early 2020, you’ll be automatically issued with either a blue or burgundy British passport.

Orlando didn’t renew its facial recognition contract with Amazon https://briefnews.eu/orlando-didnt-renew-its-facial-recognition-contract-with-amazon/ https://briefnews.eu/orlando-didnt-renew-its-facial-recognition-contract-with-amazon/#respond Tue, 26 Jun 2018 18:02:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/orlando-didnt-renew-its-facial-recognition-contract-with-amazon/

The Orlando Police Department is one of the law enforcement groups that has been testing Amazon’s facial recognition service Rekognition, using it in its headquarters and in downtown Orlando, though supposedly only with officers that agreed to test the system. However, the pilot program expired last week and the department says it has not yet decided to renew it. “Staff continues to discuss and evaluate whether to recommend continuation of the pilot at a further date. At this time that process in still ongoing and the contract with Amazon remains expired,” the city of Orlando and the police department said this week in a joint statement given to Floridapolitics.com.

Amazon and the city of Orlando have received pushback over the program, with those opposing it expressing concerns over the ample potential for its misuse. The ACLU presented Amazon with a petition and a letter signed by 17 investors asking it to stop selling the Rekognition system, while Amazon employees wrote their own letter saying the tool would “ultimately serve to harm the most marginalized.” Reuters reports that the Florida chapter of the ACLU sent a letter to city officials this week also encouraging a suspension of the program, saying people “should be free to walk down the street without being watched by the government.”

Two members of Congress have shared concerns as well. Representatives Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) sent Jeff Bezos a letter asking how Rekognition is being used by law enforcement.

The statement provided by the city and the Orlando Police Department leaves open the possibility of recommencing the Rekognition program in the future. The two entities added, “The city of Orlando is always looking for new solutions to further our ability to keep our residents and visitors safe. Partnering with innovative companies to test new technology — while also ensuring we uphold privacy laws and in no way violate the rights of others — is critical to us as we work to further keep our community safe.”

It looks like the drama surrounding Google’s controversial involvement in Project Maven is coming to an end. Yet another report from Gizmodo on the subject says that Google won’t be renewing the project once its current contract runs out.

Project Maven is an initiative from the Department of Defense, which aims to “accelerate DoD’s integration of big data and machine learning.” The DoD has millions of hours of drone footage that pour in from around the world, and having humans comb through it for “objects of interest” isn’t a scalable proposition. So Maven recruited several tech firms for image recognition technology that could be used to identify objects of interest in the footage. As one of the leading AI firms, Google signed on to the project with a contract that reportedly lasts until 2019.

Maven was Google’s first military contract, and the move was immediately met with resistance by Google’s employees. Despite Google’s assurances that the project was “specifically scoped to be for non-offensive purposes,” an internal petition signed by over 4,000 employees demanded that Google leave the project. “The technology is being built for the military,” the letter read. “Once it’s delivered, it could easily be used to assist in [lethal] tasks.” The petition didn’t immediately result in a change in Google’s plan, which led to a dozen employees reportedly quitting the company in protest.

Passport news: THIS is why you should renew your passport before Easter https://briefnews.eu/passport-news-this-is-why-you-should-renew-your-passport-before-easter/ https://briefnews.eu/passport-news-this-is-why-you-should-renew-your-passport-before-easter/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 12:14:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/passport-news-this-is-why-you-should-renew-your-passport-before-easter/

The Home Office has announced that the cost of passports and renewables will increase later this month on an already expensive, yet essential, document.

The new fees will take effect on Tuesday 27 March and will apply to both new passports, passport renewals and the replacement of lost passports.

From March onwards it will cost £85 to renew or replace your passport – this is a 17 per cent rise.

However, if you apply by post, this fee will rise to just £75.50 – a £3 increase.

The price of a child’s passport will also increase. The current £46 fee will rise to £58.50 when applying through the Post Office postal service.

This fee will be capped at £49 when a child’s passport (under the age of 16) will be purchased online.

For those with a passport that will expire before 27 March 2018, it is advised to renew your passport now to avoid the higher costs.

If you are able to renew now, up to nine months left on a passport will be added to the new one.

This would mean rather than just the 10-year lifespan of your passport, this will rise to 10 years and nine months.

According to Gov.uk, it should take three weeks for your new passport to arrive. It is therefore advised to check your passport expiry well in advance of your holiday.

However, if you do need a passport renewal urgently there is the possibility of using a one-week fast-track option.

Although using this premium option will drastically raise costs.

A fast-track adult passport will cost upwards of £103 whilst a child’s price would also rise to £87.

If you are planning on flying in the next few months, check your passport expiry date. If you’ve only got a couple of months left, renewing now could save you money later in the year but this has to be done before Easter.

Even though the price of a British passport is set to increase, a UK passport doesn’t make the list of top threes most powerful passports in the world.

As a British citizen, only 159 can be entered without a visa.

This compares to 162 via free countries for Singapore and South Korea – the two most powerful passports in the world.

In fact, the UK ranks as the fourth most powerful passport in the world according to the passport index.

U.S. Senate passes bill to renew NSA warrantless internet surveillance https://briefnews.eu/u-s-senate-passes-bill-to-renew-nsa-warrantless-internet-surveillance/ https://briefnews.eu/u-s-senate-passes-bill-to-renew-nsa-warrantless-internet-surveillance/#respond Fri, 19 Jan 2018 07:57:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/u-s-senate-passes-bill-to-renew-nsa-warrantless-internet-surveillance/

(Reuters) — The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed a bill to renew the National Security Agency’s warrantless internet surveillance program for six years with minimal changes, overcoming objections from civil liberties advocates that it undermined the privacy of Americans.

The legislation, which easily passed the House of Representatives last week, is expected to be signed into law by President Donald Trump by Friday.

Thursday’s 65-34 passage in the Senate was largely a foregone conclusion, after senators earlier this week cleared a 60-vote procedural hurdle, which split party lines and came within one vote of failing.

Passage of the legislation marked a disappointing end to a years-long effort by a coalition of liberal Democrats and libertarian-leaning Republicans to redefine the scope of U.S. intelligence collection following the 2013 disclosures of classified surveillance secrets by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

The bill reauthorizes what is known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which gathers information from foreigners overseas but incidentally collects an unknown amount of communications belonging to Americans.

Under Section 702, the NSA is empowered to eavesdrop on vast amounts of digital communications via American companies like Facebook Inc, Verizon Communications Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google.

But the program also incidentally scoops up Americans’ communications, including when they communicate with a foreign target living overseas. Intelligence analysts can then search those messages without a warrant.

The White House, U.S. intelligence agencies and congressional Republican leaders said the program is indispensable to national security.

Opponents of the program said it allows the NSA and other intelligence agencies to grab data belonging to Americans in a way that represents an affront to the U.S. Constitution.

The bill passed by Congress does add a narrow warrant requirement for cases where the Federal Bureau of Investigation seeks emails related to an existing criminal investigation that has no relevance to national security. Privacy advocates said that essentially gave more protections to criminal suspects than ordinary Americans caught up in the program’s surveillance.

(Reuters) — The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill to renew the National Security Agency’s warrantless internet surveillance program, overcoming objections from privacy advocates and confusion prompted by morning tweets from President Donald Trump that initially questioned the spying tool.

The legislation, which passed 256-164 and split party lines, is the culmination of a years-long debate in Congress on the proper scope of U.S. intelligence collection – one fueled by the 2013 disclosures of classified surveillance secrets by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Senior Democrats in the House had urged cancellation of the vote after Trump appeared to cast doubt on the merits of the program, but Republicans forged ahead.

Trump initially wrote on Twitter that the surveillance program, first created in secret after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and later legally authorized by Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), had been used against him but later said it was needed.

Some conservative, libertarian-leaning Republicans and liberal Democrats attempted to persuade colleagues to include more privacy protections. They failed on Thursday to pass an amendment to include a requirement for a warrant before the NSA or other intelligence agencies could scrutinize communications belonging to an American whose data is incidentally collected.

Thursday’s vote was a major blow to privacy and civil liberties advocates, who just two years ago celebrated passage of a law effectively ending the NSA’s bulk collection of U.S. phone call records, another top-secret program exposed by Snowden.

The bill as passed by the House would extend the NSA’s spying program for six years with minimal changes. Some privacy groups said it would actually expand the NSA’s surveillance powers.

Most lawmakers expect it to become law, although it still would require Senate approval and Trump’s signature. Republican Senator Rand Paul and Democratic Senator Ron Wyden immediately vowed to filibuster the measure, but it was unclear whether they could persuade enough colleagues to force changes.

The Senate will hold a procedural vote on the bill next week after it returns from a break, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Thursday.

“The intelligence community and the Justice Department depend on these vital authorities to protect the homeland and keep Americans safe,” McConnell, a Republican, said in a statement.

The White House, U.S. intelligence agencies and Republican leaders in Congress have said they consider the surveillance program indispensable and in need of little or no revision.

Before the vote, a tweet from Trump had contradicted the official White House position and renewed unsubstantiated allegations that the previous Democratic administration of Barack Obama improperly surveilled the Republican’s 2016 presidential campaign.

“This is the act that may have been used, with the help of the discredited and phony Dossier, to so badly surveil and abuse the Trump Campaign by the previous administration and others?” the president wrote in a tweet.

“We need it!”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request to clarify Trump’s tweet, but he posted a follow-up less than two hours later, after speaking on the phone with House Republican leader Paul Ryan.

“With that being said, I have personally directed the fix to the unmasking process since taking office and today’s vote is about foreign surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land. We need it! Get smart!” Trump tweeted.

Unmasking refers to the largely separate issue of how Americans’ names kept secret in intelligence reports can be revealed.

After the vote Thursday, Ryan, asked about his conversation with the president, said Trump’s concerns regarded other parts of the law.

“It’s well known that he has concerns about the domestic FISA law. That’s not what we’re doing today. Today was 702, which is a different part of that law. … He knows that and he, I think, put out something that clarifies that,” Ryan told reporters.

Asked by Reuters at a conference in New York about Trump’s tweets, Rob Joyce, the top White House cyber official, said there was no confusion within the Oval Office about the value of the surveillance program and that there have been no cases of it being used improperly for political purposes.

Trump’s tweets on surveillance marked the second time this week that he appeared to veer from the administration’s position. During a meeting on Tuesday to discuss immigration with a bipartisan group of legislators he initially voiced support when Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein suggested a “clean” bill to protect undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy pointed out that a “clean” bill would not include the security and border wall that Trump has insisted be part of any immigration plan.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters there was no contradiction in Trump’s tweets on the surveillance program and that he was voicing broader concerns about FISA.

Without congressional action, legal support for Section 702 will expire next week, although intelligence officials say it could continue through April.

Section 702 allows the NSA to eavesdrop on vast amounts of digital communications from foreigners living outside the United States through U.S. companies such as Facebook, Verizon Communications, and Alphabet’s Google.
