That chill weekend jam you requested has arrived — and it’s dressed to kill. Netflix on Friday released the theme song and opening title sequence for its upcoming Carmen Sandiego reboot, and while it may not get your blood pumping quite like the iconic Rockapella version of yesteryear, it fits the new series’ mysterious vibe quite nicely.

With Jane the Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez voicing the title role, Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego shifts from the focus from “where” the iconic criminal may be to “who” she really is, exploring her history with the V.I.L.E. Training Academy — a shadowy organization she has since dedicated her life to stopping. Along the way, she’ll be helped by a “player,” voiced by Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard.

Here’s the show’s official logline, per Netflix: “Carmen is a modern day Robin Hood traveling the globe and stealing from V.I.L.E. and giving back to its victims. Carmen is publicly perceived as a criminal by most law enforcement agencies – correction, make that a master criminal due to the sheer scale and theatricality of her heists. We will follow her escapades and get to determine not only where but WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego?”

Last year on April Fool’s Day, the ultimate Adult Swim joke came in the form of a surprise season premiere of the third season of Rick and Morty. This year, it seemed unlikely that a surprise fourth season premiere would happen, especially with the trouble behind the scenes in getting an official order for the show to continue. But fans were still treated to a Rick and Morty prank anyway.

Rather than deliver a new episode of Rick and Morty, an animated short called the Bushworld Adventures debuted that takes the Rick and Morty formula and sets it in Australia. However, instead of going on any cosmic adventures, the duo just go on a wild road trip across the bush of Australia. The result is a short that is somehow more twisted and intense (not to mention Australian) than the real Rick and Morty, and that’s saying something.

This creation by Michael Cusack isn’t that much darker than Rick and Morty, but there is something that feels almost like this is an acid trip version of a show that already feels like it’s an acid trip. Rick taking his portal gun, modified to look like a real gun, and pointing it at Morty’s head while they’re driving is pretty damn twisted. But I suppose Rick threatening to suck the venom out of a snake bite on Morty’s genitals isn’t any more strange than other things we’ve seen on the real animated series (or even in the test episodes before it became an Adult Swim series).

This isn’t quite as great of a gift as a new episode of Rick and Morty, but I suppose we should take what we can get for the time being. After all, the way it’s looking, we’re not going to get any new episodes of Rick and Morty until sometime in 2019, so we definitely need something to tie us over besides the plentiful amounts of Szechuan sauce available at McDonald’s now.

The good news is that fans will soon be able to hold themselves over by picking up the third season of Rick and Morty on Blu-ray and DVD, arriving on May 15. Of course, if you’re that desperate to rewatch them, you can always download them from iTunes right now, but if you’re that big of a Rick and Morty fan, you probably already knew that.

It’s the season for holiday specials, but game developers don’t make many of these for their properties. Sure, you can go back and play Sega’s Christmas Nights or dabble in the occasional online event, but now you can also evade gingerbread men and giant snowballs in a special holiday version of Donkey Kong.

Sock Master, a Donkey Kong community hacker, has released the DK Remix Christmas edition as part of a holiday tournament on the Donkey Kong Forum website. This version of Nintendo’s arcade classic covers the levels in snow, puts Pauline in a red party dress, and gives a wintry spin to many of its other elements. You can play it if you have the original Donkey Kong arcade ROM and the MAME emulator and download the remix from donkeykongforum.com.

The tournament, which is a small fan event, has a prize pool of $ 250 and a DK Remix T-shirt. The person with the highest score gets $ 100. The Donkey Kong Forum is also planning to award cash bounties to people who get to the game’s kill screen, the first person to get 1 million points, and the person who gets the highest end-stage bonus. This tournament starts December 16 and runs through the end of the month.

Blockbuster summer has been a fairly disappointing season thus far. For my money, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been the only movie that has truly delivered what a summer blockbuster is. Thankfully, the season is only half over, and we’ve got plenty of great movies coming down the pipeline, one of which will be arriving in just a couple weeks and just might have a soundtrack that rivals the aforementioned Marvel Studios sequel.

Baby Driver is the latest film from Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs the World director Edgar Wright, and along with the crisp action, editing and camera work that comes with all of the director’s films, there’s a thumping soundtrack that keeps the movie alive in a mesmerizing way. In the spirit of the adrenaline-fueled action flick, DJ Mike Relm created a Baby Driver trailer remix using sound effects, dialogue and more to create an interesting track that wouldn’t feel out of place in the movie itself. Watch it below!

Though the movie doesn’t remix or cut footage in the same way that the above video does, the way gunshots and other sound effects are heard in the movie has them happening with the rhythm of the music that the lead character Baby (Ansel Elgort) is listening to from his iPod. If you’re not quite sure what that will be like, you should check out the recently released music featurette that teases how the music works in a couple scenes.

The full soundtrack list for Baby Driver has already been released, and I can’t wait to see and hear how the assembly of tunes works with the movie that Edgar Wright has created. If you need more convincing that you should be as excited to see this movie as we are, then you should read our own Jacob Hall’s review from SXSW earlier this year, where he described the movie as a “spectacular car chase musical.” Plus, you can find out more about the making of the movie in our full set visit report.

The cast of Baby Driver also includes Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza González and Jamie Foxx, and we’ll see how the movie turns out in just a couple weeks.

A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

Baby Driver arrives in theaters on June 28.

Microsoft is making some bold promises with Story Remix, its recently announced app for the Windows 10 Fall Creators update. Together with the company’s deep learning technology, it can automatically craft your photos and videos into short films. Story Remix resembles Apple Clips and Google’s Photo Assistant, but it goes a bit farther with the ability to analyze everything on a pixel level-basis to detect people, objects and the overall setting.

If it works as advertised, it could be a transformational app for consumers fed up with their ever-growing libraries of digital media. It’s the latest attempt by Microsoft to make your life easier by predicting what you want. But, as you’ll recall, that hasn’t always worked out well for the company.

“Clippy was actually a very early attempt at trying to look at patterns of what you’re doing, but it didn’t have the benefit of all this deep learning tech that’s available now,” said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Chris Pratley, the man behind Story Remix, in an interview with Engadget. With his previous project, Sway, he tried to rethink how you could create text and media-based stories without worrying about formatting worries. Story Remix is the next logical step.

“The problem always holding us back is that we didn’t understand what you were doing,” he added. “If I was a human being, I could see if you’re writing an article, or something like that. But we didn’t know that. Everything was just text and pixels.”

Now, Microsoft can actually figure out what those pixels mean with its Compute Vision AI technology. That makes it easier to add visual effects, like placing a fireball animation onto a soccer ball as it’s about to be kicked. You just have to drop a 3D effect onto the soccer ball and letting Story Remix do the mapping work.

“Anyone now can take off the shelf deep learning tech and see there’s a face [in a photo],” Pratley said. “It’s a lot more work to tell you whose face it is, and to distinguish it from another face.” It’s one thing to do that for an image, but Story Remix also has to be able to analyze every frame of a video, up to 60 frames per second. That lets it add special effects that would typically require a green screen, like placing a volcano in the background of a video.

“Ten years ago, with the way any creative tool was built, the basic tools didn’t have a lot of features. And the really powerful ones had tons of features,” Pratley said. “The model was, you had to bring your own time, talent and patience to [every project], and you got out of it what you put into it. It sounds great, but it really isn’t.”

In many ways, Story Remix looks a lot like the future of productivity apps. It’s trying to cater to users of all sorts, from beginners who want to put in the least amount of effort into creating movies, to power users who want to spend a bit more time to get things just right. While there will surely be users who clamor for even more manual control in Story Remix, Pratley isn’t too worried about that. He points out that adding manual controls is easy, the hard part is going further to make complex productivity tools simpler for everyone.

Of course, there are reasons to be skeptical of this push towards deep learning-enhanced productivity apps. While the technology has made for some great demos, it really hasn’t transformed consumer apps just yet. And Microsoft will surely have a hard time living down the specter of Clippy. But, if Story Remix succeeds, it could be huge.

“It’s always been my dream as a creative tool builder, if I just knew what you were building, I could help you so much more,” Pratley said. “And now we do.”
