UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson earlier agreed with an MP who said that “Putin is going to use it [the World Cup] in the way Hitler used the 1936 Olympics” – to boost Russia’s image. In response, Maria Zakharova took the time during a news briefing on Thursday to call out London on how it endorsed the Nazi-hosted 1936 games by sending a high-profile delegation.
Speaking of the makeup of the delegation, Zakharova cited a German brochure that listed the “honorable guests.” It enumerated the British dignitaries, including the head of the British Olympic Association, its secretary general, as well as three British representatives in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and a number of British heads of the International sports federations that attended the Games.
“This means nothing other than that the abovementioned individuals took part in official events with regards to the Olympics, visited the stadiums and the opening ceremony and, also, actively interacted with local officials in 1936 Berlin,” Zakharova said, noting that, at that time, Germany was “already poisoned” by the Nazi ideology.
“A system of concentration camps for the opponents of the Nazi regime, anti-social elements, convicts and other categories of citizens was already created at that point,” she said, before asking Johnson if he does not find it “nauseating” that so many high-ranking Brits were welcomed by Hitler.
While British diplomatic corps members were performing their official functions at the Games, Zakharova said, the dignitaries listed in the brochure went to Berlin “of their own will,” by choice rather than duty.
“Mr. Johnson, what did those honorable British sports officials do as Hitler’s guests? Tell that to your country,” she said.
The Soviet Union was not a part of the Olympic movement until 1951, when its National Olympic Committee was founded. It made its debut at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.
Johnson’s implied comparison was earlier lambasted by another high-ranking Moscow official. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov branded the allusion “totally disgusting” and “not appropriate for any foreign minister.”
The UK foreign secretary uttered the remark on March 21 at the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, when he agreed with Labour MP Ian Austin’s insinuation.
“I think the comparison with 1936 is certainly right,” Johnson said, adding that it was “an emetic prospect” to think of “Putin glorying in this sporting event.”
Johnson is not the only member of the British PM Theresa May’s cabinet to accuse Russia of Nazi-like practices.
This week, Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson of the “go away and shut up” fame accused Russia of using internet bots to plant “distorted narratives” online to generate confusion over what the UK believes is Moscow’s ultimate guilt in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury. Moscow has repeatedly denied all the allegations, which have so far been supported with no solid proof, and lamented the UK’s unwillingness to cooperate on the case.
“We have to make sure that that narrative is countered. It is effectively the Lord Haw-Haws of the modern era,“ he told the Times, referring to William Joyce, an American-born fascist who became notorious for producing English-language Nazi propaganda in Germany.

2018 is shaping up to be a big year for VR arcades and attractions, and a new player in the space is looking to find success with an approach that focuses on fun gameplay and multiplayer.
Cyprus-based Neurogaming is a joint endeavor made up of Wargaming — the publisher behind World of Tanks — and a venture funding group called VRTech. They’ve got a development office in Moscow and two demo offices, the first in New York. Together, this group is developing a number of VR titles alongside cloud services and hardware packages designed so operators can easily set up and run their own VR arcades.
Neurogaming invited me to the New York demo office among a small group of journalists to see what they’ve been working on ahead of a larger push at GDC next month. It is still early for the group, but they are focusing more heavily than other solutions I’ve seen on one critical aspect of an alluring VR attraction: hooking people to come back with a quality competitive gaming experience.
Here’s a look inside.
Neurogaming said World of Tanks VR is built from the ground up for the medium, completely separate from the other versions of the game for mobile, console and PC. I believe it. I was a little lost at first but in a single play session of 10 minutes I got a good grasp on the controls and was playing much better by the end. The tanks are actually pretty nimble and as the match progressed it became clear how well they’ve balanced the size of the map against the number of players, the length of each round, and the challenge of both aiming and moving. After they are finished further balancing the game, Wargaming plans to release a version of it for home systems sometime early next year.
Simply put, when we finished the match I was disappointed it was over. I got to see my score at the end and while I wasn’t the worst of the group, I also wasn’t the best. I wanted more.
Before I played with them, Neurogaming representatives explained that retention is exactly the problem they are focused on trying to solve. This was evident in the design of both World of Tanks VR and shooting game RevolVR. Each match packs multiple rounds into sessions lasting just 10 minutes. RevolVR got through 12 of these rapid fire rounds. The fast-paced battles mean you can’t waste any time trying to trounce the enemy. The pace also means players have lots of chances to feel some sense of success or improvement, even if it’s just a single winning round or one kill.
Other location-based VR startups like The VOID and Dreamscape Immersive offer an excellent sense of immersion enhanced by environmental effects like wind, scent, or haptic floors. These companies provide great fun battling stormtroopers or ghostsalongside friends, or simply enjoying the wonder of exploring an alien zoo. While both those startups appear to be seeing brisk ticket sales, neither offers a truly compelling reason to come back just yet. IMAX VR is closer in design to what Neurogaming’s first arcades will look like and they are hosting tournaments in games like Sprint Vector to try and create reasons for people to come back and spend more time.
Neurogaming is trying to take this further. They are developing games either in-house or in close collaboration with partners aimed at providing a reason for people to come back. The effort starts with well-designed games for friends to play together and continues with high scores, kill counts, tournaments and a customer tracking system that keeps a record of your previous visits so you can get a sense of progress as a player or team.
“With the arcade version of World of Tanks VR we’ll introduce in-app purchases and [a] progression system later on this year, which adds extra monetization channels for operators,” wrote Neurogaming Chief Marketing Officer Alex Morozov, in an email.

Neurogaming’s CinemaVR system — ideal for roll-outs in places like theaters or malls — includes a large metal structure that sits over four players with computers and other hardware stored overhead. Each of the headsets hangs from the top of the structure with some slick cable management. The system does a pretty good job of making it easy to spin in 360 degrees and aim your tank in any direction without getting tangled up. Four players are tracked in this space by just two well-placed base stations. Neurogaming sells the four-player hardware package for around $ 35,000, with plans to become hardware agnostic later this year.
This hardware setup is accompanied by a cloud-based management system meant to make it easy for operators to download Neurogaming’s titles and start selling tickets. The whole arcade is designed to be managed from a mobile device.
Neurogaming is already powering arcades in locations in Russia and Europe, with plans to expand in the Middle East and North America soon. Perhaps most interesting to VR industry readers, the company offered some actual numbers to break down the kind of business they’re seeing initially.
With 37 locations online as of this writing, Neurogaming says each location is seeing on average 2,500 visits per month with each player paying $ 5-$ 7.50 for about 10 minutes of gameplay. This is enough, say Neurogaming representatives, for individual locations to become self-sustaining and make a profit each month from a single four-person installation.
Those are some interesting numbers to consider, but perhaps the most interesting figure to me is the following one. Neurogaming says they’re seeing a 25 percent retention rate. In other words, one in four people are already coming back for more even as they fine-tune experiences to try and increase that number.

Stay tuned in the coming days as we follow up this report with one about Polygon, which is Neurogaming’s second generation system. It is still extremely early but takes things to an incredible level of full-body, almost military-grade, simulation.

Even though Will Ferrell is one of the most popular Saturday Night Live cast members in recent memory, he’s only returned to host three times before. But this past weekend he came back to Studio 8H for his fourth time as host, and the Step Brothers and Anchorman star reminded us why he’s one of the best cast members to ever come out of Saturday Night Live.
Let’s run through the best and worst sketches from the Will Ferrell hosted Saturday Night Live below.
Next: for Men – With all the tension there is in Hollywood due to the ongoing allegations of sexual misconduct, the headline making movement is ripe for satire potential. While SNL has been hit or miss in their comedic approach to this topic, this deodorant commercial perfectly captures the tension that plenty of shady men are probably feeling during this time. You gotta love the various kinds of deodorant with titles like “College Party” and “Grey Area.”
Fighter Pilots – The fact that an SNL sketch exists with the premise of a fighter pilot having the call sign of “Clown Penis” is impressive by itself. What’s even more impressive is that this somehow isn’t a sequel to the Clown Penis Dot Fart commercial from years ago.
Chucky Lee Byrd – At first this seemed like it might be your average SNL infomercial parody, but it became so much more disturbing than that. The two hosts slowly realize that the songs by the great Chucky Lee Byrd are all about having inappropriate relationships with underage girls. That’s the basic premise, but the hits keep on coming as the sketch digs deeper and deeper into this music icon’s library. It’s one of those sketches that only Will Ferrell could make seem charming and gross at the same time.
Reality Stars – Between the make-up pulling back Will Ferrell and Cecily Strong’s eyes and the outrageous wardrobe these two characters are wearing, it’s no wonder that the cast has such a hard time keeping a straight face. Aidy Bryant nearly loses it along with Ferrell and Strong, and I was reminded of The Love-ahs jacuzzi sketch from awhile back. Even the technical snafu with the edge of the set being exposed couldn’t derail this from being downright hilarious.

Saturday Night Live this weekend opened with a message from the former president of the United States.
Host Will Ferrell reprised his role as George W. Bush, broadcasting live from a replica of the Oval Office built in the basement of his Texas estate. During his address, he reminded viewers that he was the original “really bad” president.
“According to a new poll, my approval rating is at an all-time high,” he said. “Donny Q. Trump came in, and suddenly I’m looking pretty sweet by comparison. At this rate, I might even end up on Mount Rushmore right next to Washington, Lincoln… and I wanna say, uh, Kensington?”
Dubya marveled at how he’s “suddenly popular AF. A lot of people are saying, ‘Man, I wish George W. Bush was still president right about now.’ So I just wanted to address my fellow Americans tonight and remind you guys that I was really bad. Like, historically not good.”
Dubya then listed off a few examples of why his legacy should remain tarnished: “Don’t forget, we’re still in two different wars that I started. Hey, what has two thumbs and created ISIS? This guy! And hey, at the least the stock market is doing well now. You ever seen a graph of the stock market during my presidency? It’s the only graph that comes with its own slide-whistle sound effect.”
Ferrell’s Bush was then joined by Leslie Jones’ Condoleezza Rice, and the two sang a revised version of the All in the Family theme song “Those Were the Days” to reflect how much worse America is under Donald Trump’s watch.

I imagine, like a lot of you who look back over the past year, it often seems as if the world is going straight to Hell. I wake up in the morning, I look at the paper, and I say to myself, “Oh no!” Often I’m depressed for half the day. It doesn’t matter how you voted—on Brexit, the French elections or the U.S. election more than a year ago—many of us of all persuasions and party affiliations feel remarkably similar. This feeling is not confined to one side of the political spectrum.
As a kind of remedy to this, and possibly as a kind of therapy, I started collecting news that reminded me, “Hey, there’s actually some positive stuff going on!”
I will share thoughts, images and audio relating to this initiative and I’ll welcome contributions from others.
Check out a lecture with Byrne at the New School about his cheery new project, and embrace some good vibes for a little while.

The US has said it will call an emergency UNSC meeting to discuss the unrest in Iran, citing the need to support the protesters. Moscow says the move is hypocritical, given Washington’s own history of cracking down on protests.
While the US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said Washington would call for an “urgent” UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Iran Monday, there’s been no word yet from the UN on such a meeting being scheduled. Kairat Umarov, Kazakhstan’s envoy to the UN, who is now holding the rotating presidency in the UNSC, said Tuesday the council has not yet added Iran to its agenda and no decision has been yet taken on the issue.
Haley was emphatic in her support of Iran’s anti-government protesters, praising their “great bravery” and calling on the international community to support them. “The people of Iran are crying out for freedom,” Haley told journalists at a news conference. “All freedom-loving people must stand with their cause,” she added, while promising to seek an emergency session of the UN Human Rights Commission.
Washington’s latest attempt at masquerading as a global human rights defender was met with ridicule in Moscow, which reminded the US about its own approach when dealing with protests whenever they occur on American soil. “There is no doubt that the US delegation to the UN has something to tell the world,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova said on Facebook.
“Haley can, for example, share the US experience of putting down protests, tell [the Security Council] about the mass arrests and crackdown against the Occupy Wall Street movement or about the “clean-up operation” in Fergusson,” she sarcastically added.
The Occupy Wall Street protests began in the world’s financial capital, New York City, in September 2011. People came to Zuccotti Park located in the Wall Street financial district to protest against social and economic inequality in the US. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, the police crackdown was swift, arresting as many as 700 protesters in one day as they marched across Brooklyn Bridge on October 1. Later, it was also revealed that the FBI monitored the movement through its Joint Terrorism Task Force and used counterterrorism agents to investigate OWS, despite labelling it peaceful.
Fergusson, Missouri, witnessed massive protests in 2014 following the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man who was shot and killed by a police officer. US authorities imposed a curfew in the area while military police repeatedly dispersed the protesters using tear gas and other means. Later, the Missouri governor deployed National Guard troops to secure the area.

Tonight brings the end of 2017, and it couldn’t come soon enough. This year has been a nightmare for a variety of reasons, whether it’s because of hurricanes, mass shootings, or the disaster that’s currently living in the White House. Thankfully, we got some relief from this year thanks to the movies.
Nick Bosworth, an editor for JoBlo, has created Final Cut 2017, an entertaining assembly of footage from hundreds of movies released over the past year. The movies all blend into each other with the perfect soundtrack fueling the edit, including the surprising prominence of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” which was featured in several movies this year. This is the perfect way for cinephiles to finish 2017 and get ready for the new year.
Here’s what Bosworth had to say after looking back at 2017:
“It’s been a long and challenging year to say the least with a vast amount of twists and turns along the way. A year of bad decisions, good decisions and growth in ways I couldn’t possibly imagine. I couldn’t have gotten through it however without the support of my amazing girlfriend Lynn, my family, our leader JoBlo and the amazing site crew, my close friends and of course…the power of amazing cinema.
If I’ve learned anything in this past year, it’s that time, honesty, friendship and clear-thoughts are precious things that one must take great care with or you risk going down the wrong path. With that I present my return to the year-end movie mashup with Final Cut 2017 and wish everyone a brilliant and wonderful 2018.”
Indeed, the power of cinema and the strength of our relationships will be what gets us through the hardest of times. While this year was undoubtedly full of challenges, with plenty more on the horizon, we’ll get through them by protecting what we love. So in 2018, let’s continue to love movies and each other. That might seem a little saccharine, but we can all use a little sentimentality every now and then.

Apple’s bezel-less “X” is the first iPhone with an OLED screen — a technology known for its greater contrast and saturation, but also for its tendency to get burn-in. To make sure customers understand that their $ 1,000 phone might suffer from image persistence in the future, the tech titan has updated the iPhone X’s display support page to explain how an OLED screen works.
The company explains that the “slight shifts in color and hue” when viewing the screen off-angle (read: not straight on) are perfectly normal. It also says OLEDs exhibit slight visual changes with long-term use, such as showing remnants of a high-contrast image displayed on the screen for extended periods of time even when it’s already showing another image.
Those two are also the most common issues Pixel 2 XL owners have with their Android Oreo devices. By pre-empting potential complaints, Apple is most likely trying to avoid facing a similar debacle. In Google’s case, though, some customers’ complaints might be warranted, since they reportedly got burn-in as soon as a week after their purchase.
Despite the warning, Apple assures customers that their pricey new phones aren’t going to have less-than-perfect displays anytime soon. The company says it “engineered the Super Retina display to be the best in the industry in reducing the effects of OLED “burn-in.” And, as AppleInsider notes, iPhone X uses OLED made by Samsung. The Korean conglomerate also manufactures OLED screens for Pixel 2, which doesn’t suffer from the same issues as its bigger sibling.
