Remember when Facebook was a place where you wished happy birthday to people you never interact with otherwise and occasionally pulled up an ex’s current pictures to see how they’re doing? In an apparent bid to pull the narrative back from its executive’s TV interviews and a couple of appearances in front of Congress, the social network has started airing this ad promising “Facebook will do more to keep you safe and protect your privacy.” Spam, clickbait, fake news and “data misuse” are all cited specifically as things that are going to change, even as Cambridge Analytica and AI nipple recognition go unmentioned.

If your account is already deleted or you’re holding fast to a theory that the company monitors your microphone for ad targeting this video is unlikely to change your mind. The question for people who are more casually aware of the current environment of privacy reckonings is whether it makes them feel safer about logging into Facebook or not.

  • Stormy Daniels, who alleges she had an affair with Donald Trump in 2006, said he compared her to his daughter, Ivanka.
  • The comparison occurred after Daniels allegedly spanked Trump with a magazine, she said on “60 Minutes.”
  • This isn’t the first time Trump has reportedly compared women he has had intimate relationships with to his daughter.

Donald Trump once said adult-film star Stormy Daniels reminded him of his daughter, Daniels alleged in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday night.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims she had an affair with Donald Trump in 2006. According to Daniels, the two were introduced at a golf tournament in 2006 and then met in his hotel room.

Ricciardo: ‘I might just remind these cats’ https://briefnews.eu/ricciardo-i-might-just-remind-these-cats/ https://briefnews.eu/ricciardo-i-might-just-remind-these-cats/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 19:14:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ricciardo-i-might-just-remind-these-cats/ FLYING under the radar usually isn’t a concern for local hero Daniel Ricciardo ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

But the Red Bull star feels he has to remind everyone of his presence in Sunday’s Formula One season opener in Melbourne.

Off-contract Ricciardo — 29 in July — is considered a title threat this year with Red Bull’s new car RB14 expected to join Ferrari and threaten Mercedes’ domination in 2018.

Crowd favourite Ricciardo still felt he needed to make people sit up and take notice at Albert Park after the emergence of 20-year-old teammate Max Verstappen and talk Valtteri Bottas will challenge all conquering Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton this season.

“I always feel I have something to prove. People forget quickly as well,” Ricciardo told Fox Sports TV.

“There’s obviously a lot of talk about the young guys coming up, there’s my teammate Max.

“And talk about Bottas and can he challenge Hamilton this year. “You always feel you constantly have to remind people so I might just remind these cats and try and get myself in a good position (for world title).”

Ricciardo is hopeful of earning Red Bull’s first Australian Grand Prix podium finish since 2013 this weekend despite a luckless run in Melbourne last year plagued by technical failures.

“It brings a tear to my eye. No, it’s all good,” Ricciardo said of last year’s home grand prix.

The Red Bull star has been linked to Ferrari and Mercedes for 2019 after failing to follow the lead of Verstappen who resigned recently until 2020. Red Bull want Ricciardo to stay but have given him a deadline, with contract talks reportedly set to resume in April.

Ricciardo sounded like a man approaching a pivotal season in his career. “After your career is said and done you always want to say your career was over the limit not under it,” he said.

“Otherwise you feel like you never understood your true potential.

“Last year the new cars had not been on the limit enough — I was just trying to do what I could … but now I am excited.”

Red Bull won four straight drivers’ and constructors’ world titles when Ricciardo joined the senior team in 2014 but have not claimed another since. Ricciardo has won five races with Red Bull since being promoted from Toro Rosso four years ago.

But Red Bull are tipped to threaten four time world champion Hamilton after Ricciardo impressed in the RB14 at recent testing at Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.

Haley’s Binomo island? US continues to ‘remind’ Russia of its place, UN envoy tells pranksters https://briefnews.eu/haleys-binomo-island-us-continues-to-remind-russia-of-its-place-un-envoy-tells-pranksters/ https://briefnews.eu/haleys-binomo-island-us-continues-to-remind-russia-of-its-place-un-envoy-tells-pranksters/#respond Sun, 24 Dec 2017 05:11:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/haleys-binomo-island-us-continues-to-remind-russia-of-its-place-un-envoy-tells-pranksters/ The US keeps reminding Russia about its “place” in the world and follows the situation on the fictional island of Binomo closely, a famous comedy duo said of US envoy Nikki Haley, who apparently fell victim to their latest prank.

Famous Russian pranksters, Vovan and Lexus (Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov), released the recording of yet another one of their prank calls, in which they allegedly tricked Nikki Haley into believing she was speaking with the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki.

During a 22-minute long conversation with their interlocutor, whose voice and tone strikingly resembled that of the UN envoy, the pranksters raised concern over Russia’s alleged interference in the political affairs of an imaginary South China Sea island of ‘Binomo,’ which does not, and never existed on the world map. Haley, however, seemed to be on top of things, claiming the US is watching the situation there very carefully.

“Do you know Binomo?” the impersonator asked, “They have declared independence. They had elections, and we suppose Russians had its intervention.”

“Yes, of course, they did, absolutely,” Haley replied assertively.

“And now this ‘Binomo’ land makes the situation in the South China Sea even more tense,” the pranksters probed, posing as the Polish PM. “And we’re aware of that. We’ve been watching that very closely. And I think we will continue to watch as we deal with the issues that keep coming up about the South China Sea,” Haley replied.

Continuing with the issue of alleged Russian interference in the world’s political affairs, the Polish PM-imposter asked Haley whether or not “Putin [will] be aggressive regarding Europe next year?”

“It is hard to know what Russia is doing right now. I think what we have seen in the Security Council and otherwise is they are trying to be relevant in every region and they are trying to have some sort of say in every region,” she replied. “In some cases, it has worked for them and in some cases, it hasn’t. So they don’t have the influence that I think they would like to have but they are certainly trying to get that.”

“I think that many of the other countries, whether it is the Security Council or otherwise, are watching it very cautiously and carefully to make sure that they don’t get too much of a foothold where they can cause chaos,” she continued.

“They are aggressive and they can be difficult to work in the Council… And they do try to cause some disruption, but we manage them and we continue to remind them what their place is…” Haley told the ‘Polish PM,’ just days before Poland begins a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

The last comment seems to have struck a nerve with the Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, who took to Facebook to criticize Haley’s rhetoric. “Nikki, do you really want Russia to remember all of its ‘places’ in the world?” Maria Zhakarova questioned, calling such remarks by the US’ UN representative “somehow short-sighted.”

While the US envoy has neither officially denied or confirmed the authenticity of the conversation, yet, she very well might have become the latest victim of the Russian pranksters, who became famous for their unique ability to reach out to high-profile politicians and celebrities.

Vovan and Lexus are celebrated in Russia for making fun of high-profile personas, including politicians and celebrities. In September 2015, the pair played a prank on Sir Elton John, which forced the Kremlin to apologize and arrange a real phone call between President Vladimir Putin and the iconic musician. Before that, the duo successfully pranked Belorussian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov as well as Georgia’s fugitive former president, Mikhail Saakashvili.

Google has made email a much less tedious, junky affair for a lot of us, and it’s about to take another step to helping us clean out our inboxes. According to a report over at Android Police, users of Google’s Inbox app will start seeing new tips that will prompt them to unsubscribe from any promotional emails that haven’t been opened in a month.

If you have any emails that Inbox has classified under its “Promos” tag, you might start seeing a new Inbox Tip that offers an easy way to unsubscribe (or say no thanks, if you want to keep getting the emails). The feature appears to be new, and seems to only be available on Android phones and the web version of Inbox.

None of the editors at Engadget seem to have one of these tip cards, yet, but Android Police has images of the feature and we’ve reached out to Google for confirmation. We’ll update this post when we hear back.

YouTube’s top 10 videos for 2017 remind us that people watch a lot of ping-pong ball trick shots https://briefnews.eu/youtubes-top-10-videos-for-2017-remind-us-that-people-watch-a-lot-of-ping-pong-ball-trick-shots/ https://briefnews.eu/youtubes-top-10-videos-for-2017-remind-us-that-people-watch-a-lot-of-ping-pong-ball-trick-shots/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 15:31:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youtubes-top-10-videos-for-2017-remind-us-that-people-watch-a-lot-of-ping-pong-ball-trick-shots/

Lots of stuff to unpack from the myriad cultural insights offered by this year’s list of top videos from YouTube.

Haha, no, I’m just kidding!

This year’s list once again reminds us that not only have we developed terrible taste in music, but we spend inane amounts of time watching people perform various idiocies, like ping-pong ball tricks, for instance.

I mean, I have nothing against ping-pong balls, or people who opt to dedicate their lives to creating and executing them. Fine. But thanks to the unholy melding of the internet, YouTube, our general cultural depravity, and the way those things combine to create data that allows companies to fine-tune ad targeting, we have a world where Ping Pong Trick Shots 3 by Dude Perfect was the third most-watched video of 2017.

This means we have a world in which Oreo is willing to pony up sponsorship bucks for ping-pong ball trick shots with various Oreo branding items, such as giant Oreo cookies baked right into the setup.

Here, let’s give it a few million more views, shall we? Also, pass the Oreo cookies and some milk, please.

Here are some interesting factoids on Dude Perfect, directly from YouTube:

  • Dude Perfect has been making trick shot videos on YouTube since 2009 and have 24 million people subscribed to their channel. This ping-pong trick shot montage is their biggest video of 2017, and already their second most-viewed video ever (behind only the video that this one is a sequel to: Ping Pong Trick Shots 2). It’s also a sponsored advertisement for Oreos and therefore one of the top ads of 2017.
  • Dude Perfect is the 13th largest channel on YouTube by subscribers and one of the top 10 channels in subscribers-gained in 2017.
  • Over the years, people have watched their videos 4.2 billion times (and over a billion this year alone).
  • This is the second year in a row they’ve made the list. Their water bottle flip was #6 on our 2016 list.

Bottom line: Humanity is opting to spend its free time obsessively watching an ad for Oreo cookies.

Here’s the list of top 10 videos.

  1. Until We Will Become Dust – Oyster Masked (ตราบธุลีดิน – หน้ากากหอยนางรม) | THE MASK SINGER 2
  2. ED SHEERAN – Shape Of You | Kyle Hanagami Choreography

  8. history of the entire world, i guess
  9. In a Heartbeat – Animated Short Film
  10. Children interrupt BBC News interview – BBC News

Here are this year’s top music videos:

  1. Luis Fonsi – Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee
  2. Ed Sheeran – Shape of You [Official Video]
  3. J Balvin, Willy William – Mi Gente (Official Video)
  4. Maluma – Felices los 4 (Official Video)

  10. Enrique Iglesias – SUBEME LA RADIO (Official Video) ft. Descemer Bueno, Zion & Lennox

Here’s hoping for an Ed Sheeran-free 2018.

A ‘Labyrinth’ Origins Comic Book Will Remind You of the Babe, Jareth the Goblin King https://briefnews.eu/a-labyrinth-origins-comic-book-will-remind-you-of-the-babe-jareth-the-goblin-king/ https://briefnews.eu/a-labyrinth-origins-comic-book-will-remind-you-of-the-babe-jareth-the-goblin-king/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 01:39:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-labyrinth-origins-comic-book-will-remind-you-of-the-babe-jareth-the-goblin-king/ labyrinth comic book

Say it with me: dance, magic, dance, the Goblin King is returning to our lives! This time, Jareth — the original Babe with the power of voodoo (over my heart) — will be casting his spell over readers of a new Labyrinth comic book from writer Simon Spurrier and artist Daniel Bayliss. The comic book series, titled Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, will explore the origin story of Jareth the Goblin King and how he came to reside over the titular mystical labyrinth.

Lisa Henson, Henson’s daughter and the CEO and president of the Jim Henson Company, described to Entertainment Weekly the story of the ongoing comic book series, which would trace the Goblin King’s origins all the way back to 18th century Venice:

“It’s the backstory of how Jareth came to be in the Labyrinth himself. The Goblin King, he’s not a goblin, he’s human. Many people have asked, ‘Well, how did he get there?’ So, that’s something that we thought we would explore.”

EW also provided a sneak peek at cover and variant covers of the comic book series under Boom! Studios imprint Archaia. The cover is by Fiona Staples, with a subscription cover by Rebekah Isaacs, and variant covers by Laurent Durieux, Jill Thompson, and Bill Sienkiewicz.

Spurrier described the influences that David Bowie, the late musician and actor who originally brought Jareth to life in the 1986 fantasy film, had on the comic book. But that didn’t stop Spurrier from taking creative license with the story, adding his own spin on a character who helped bring leather pants back into fashion (this can’t be confirmed, the movie just personally made me love leather pants):

“We’re sort of having our cake and eating it. The ‘Bowie form’ version of the character is very much present in our story. But there’s a huge amount of stuff about the people who loved him and he loved. What happened to them? How did this all shake out? How did he come to be who he is? I hope that by exercising both sides of that picture, as well as leaning into all the other amazing things that are fantastic about the Labyrinth as a concept, we should hopefully get our Bowie itch scratched while also enjoying the fantastical, surreal wonder of this world.”

I received a battered copy of Jim Henson’s cult 1986 fantasy film on VHS for Christmas as a kid, and it forever imprinted upon me the image of David Bowie in glorious feathered hair and too-tight pants. The story of a Goblin King kidnapping a baby Toby at the behest of the impudent teen Sarah, leading her on a quest to retrieve her baby brother, at first traumatized me but soon became one of my favorite forgotten fantasy films — with a song that acts as a great litmus test for finding likeminded fans. The Goblin King was a source of many a young girl’s childhood crush, so there will definitely be a built-in fanbase when this comic book origin series hits bookshelves.

Issue #1 of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth in February 2018.

This year, the Atlantic tropics are reminding the United States and Caribbean Islands how brutal September can be when it comes to hurricanes. Perhaps coastal residents have forgotten, as the Atlantic tropics have slumbered in recent Septembers, according to a widely used metric that calculates the total energy of storms during their lifetimes—Accumulated Cyclone Energy.

The Atlantic basin’s combined Accumulated Cyclone Energy for the last four Septembers, from 2013 to 2016, was lower than it had been over a four-year period since 1911 to 1914, according to Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane scientist at Colorado State University. This year it has been among the ten most potent. This is also just the ninth year on record with seven or more hurricanes by September 17 in the last century and a half.

So it’s busy out there. And for some people, more pain lies ahead. Here’s a look at the threats posed by hurricanes Jose and Maria.

Why building an AI company should not remind you of a blind date https://briefnews.eu/why-building-an-ai-company-should-not-remind-you-of-a-blind-date/ https://briefnews.eu/why-building-an-ai-company-should-not-remind-you-of-a-blind-date/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 07:09:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-building-an-ai-company-should-not-remind-you-of-a-blind-date/

It’s easy to start an AI company. All you need is an idea and some funding, right? Not so fast, say two experts who are known for building well-known conversational UI platforms. It’s a difficult and time-consuming process, one that requires extraordinary effort. And it is a highly competitive market. Funding alone won’t make it work.

One big lesson: You have to know what you’re getting into. Building an AI company is not like a first date or a blind date. It has to be much more planned out, even though that’s sometimes not the case.

One example from a high-profile company: Microsoft created the Tay chatbot on Twitter without doing its due diligence, even though the tech giant obviously had the resources to make it all work. Because an AI is built by humans, the products and services you offer must be well-tested, follow a business plan, and appeal to a specific target market…or else. (No one ever did figure out why Tay existed.)

Because building an AI company is so hard, it’s worth exploring what actually works and what has left a few bumps and bruises for companies that didn’t quite understand what it takes.

Lauren Kunze, the CEO of Pandorabots, and Clara de Soto, the cofounder of Reply.ai, both have extensive experience starting companies and building out an AI platform that actually works and people use on a daily basis. In their closing keynote at MB 2017, the well-known figures in artificial intelligence explained how there are many battle scars on the road to AI success.

“You can’t build anything of high quality in five minutes,” said Kunze. “At the same time, you should strive to launch quickly, after one to three months of initial development, because once you release conversational software people are going to say completely unexpected things and most of the work happens after launch. You have to continually optimize the system and have a clear plan for optimization using dedicated human resources.”

In the presentation, both experts explained some of the “gotchas” involved with birthing an AI company. One of the real killers? Many founders don’t do a good job defining what they are even creating and the expectations for delivery. The bot will rule over Alexa and the Google Assistant! It will power your entire home! Good luck with those goals, they said. Amazon and Google have more money than you do, and they have already overshadowed most AI-driven text interfaces.

How about not defining a business case? Or hiring the wrong team? Some founders spend way too much time and money trying to build a product. Meanwhile, the industry moves on and your travel chatbot that can book a flight suddenly seems like it is ridiculously out of date. (Or takes a backseat when Kayak does a better job.)

Awesome.ai is one example of a company that hit the limelight and then couldn’t make figure out how to raise more funds. Many startups are lured into thinking it can be a quick and easy process.

“The way we see it, you’re never just ‘building a bot’ so much as launching a ‘conversational strategy’ — one that’s constantly evolving and being optimized based on how users are actually interacting with it,” said de Soto.

Kunze said there is no way a company is going to just go out and acquire machine learning algorithms that will yield a 10 percent lift in their business or build an AI without a lot of effort. One company wanted her to build the Chinese version of Jarvis — the character from Iron Man. They didn’t understand the primary user of that bot is a fictional character.

“Conversational AI is a very hard and expensive problem,” said Kunze. “Siri, Alexa, and Assistant have thousand-person teams. Businesses and developers both have limited resources and time constraints. It’s better to do one thing really well than a lot of things really poorly.”

De Soto said another example of building it right is to focus on what bots do best — like customer service. “Aside from optimization, it’s critical to be disciplined about what business case you’re solving–we’re very bullish on the pain bots can solve in customer service, where bots and AI can not only cut costs but also generate revenue by providing personalization at scale,” she said.

In the end, the scars any company founder experiences can also be a motivator. There is a long process involved in creating a chatbot or an Amazon skill people use, and there’s an even longer road to turn the company into a powerhouse — or even one that makes a profit.

According to Kunze and de Soto, the companies that survive, that assemble the right team to define what its bot will do, and that know how to see the company evolution through to the end are the ones that will stand a chance against the AI giants.

The last point they made was perhaps the most interesting. A good way to be left behind? Do nothing at all.

Windows 10 will remind you to install the latest major update https://briefnews.eu/windows-10-will-remind-you-to-install-the-latest-major-update/ https://briefnews.eu/windows-10-will-remind-you-to-install-the-latest-major-update/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2017 03:04:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/windows-10-will-remind-you-to-install-the-latest-major-update/

Are you still running the original version of Windows 10? Microsoft is about to offer a not-so-subtle hint that it’s time to move on. The software giant has revealed that it will start sending notifications to users who are still using Windows 10 version 1507, warning them that the operating system is deemed “end of service” and will no longer receive monthly security patches. You’ll see a convenient button to upgrade to the latest release (at present, the Creators Update) if you’re part of this group.

Yes, this is another instance of Microsoft steering Windows users toward upgrades they don’t necessarily want. In this case, however, it’s not surprising why Microsoft would get a little pushy. Outdated versions of Windows helped spread the recent spate of malware attacks, and Microsoft probably doesn’t want to see another outbreak erupt simply because some users are skittish about OS upgrades. It’s betting you’ll be thankful for the nuisance if it keeps your PC safe in the long run.
