The premiere of Descendants 3 was a bittersweet event for Disney Channel viewers, as it featured one of the last on-camera performances of star Cameron Boyce, who died last month from an epileptic seizure. He was just 20 years old.

Following Friday’s broadcast, the network aired a two-minute tribute to the late performer, one that included footage from throughout his Disney career.

Prior to portraying Carlos — son of 101 Dalmations‘ Cruella de Vil — in the Descendants franchise, Boyce spent four seasons starring opposite Debby Ryan on the Disney Channel sitcom Jessie. He also made appearances on shows like Good Luck Charlie, Austin & Ally, Liv and Maddie, and Jessie‘s spinoff Bunk’d.

Prior to Friday’s premiere, Descendants stars Dove Cameron, Booboo Stewart and Sofia Carson — along with director Kenny Ortega — sat down with ABC News to discuss Boyce’s legacy in an emotional interview that aired earlier this week:

The Cameron Boyce Foundation was established shortly after the actor’s death. Per its official mission statement, the foundation “provides young people artistic and creative outlets as alternatives to violence and negativity and uses resources and philanthropy for positive change in the world.”

Once Upon a Time’s Gabe Khouth Dead at 46, Remembered as ‘Great Talent’ https://briefnews.eu/once-upon-a-times-gabe-khouth-dead-at-46-remembered-as-great-talent/ https://briefnews.eu/once-upon-a-times-gabe-khouth-dead-at-46-remembered-as-great-talent/#respond Fri, 26 Jul 2019 14:14:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/once-upon-a-times-gabe-khouth-dead-at-46-remembered-as-great-talent/

Gabe Khouth, who is perhaps best known to TV audiences as Once Upon a Time‘s Sneezy/Tom Clark, died on July 23 after appearing to suffer a cardiac arrest while riding his motorcycle, friend and fellow actor Peter Kelamis shared on Twitter. Khouth was 46.

“My brother loved to ride,” Khouth’s sibling Sam noted in a video, below, where he invited fans to pay tribute at the presumed sight of the crash in Vancouver, Canada’s Port Moody.

In addition to his run as OUAT‘s Sneezy, Khouth’s on-camera TV credits included Life Sentence, A Series of Unfortunate Events, iZombie, Supernatural and the role of Skip the Elf in the Santa Baby TV-movies. He also did much voice work, most recently on the series Beyblade Burst and Fruit Ninja.

OUAT co-creator Adam Horowitz remembered Khouth as “a lovely man, a great talent, and an indelible part of [our show] since the beginning. But more importantly, he was our friend. He will be missed.” Lee Arenberg, who played fellow dwarf Grumpy aka Leroy, is “devastated beyond words, hailing his TV brother as “sweet and spicy, hilarious and loveable and a pure talent.”

Cameron Boyce Remembered for His ‘Talent, Kindness and Generosity’ By Descendants Director Kenny Ortega https://briefnews.eu/cameron-boyce-remembered-for-his-talent-kindness-and-generosity-by-descendants-director-kenny-ortega/ https://briefnews.eu/cameron-boyce-remembered-for-his-talent-kindness-and-generosity-by-descendants-director-kenny-ortega/#respond Sun, 07 Jul 2019 12:07:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cameron-boyce-remembered-for-his-talent-kindness-and-generosity-by-descendants-director-kenny-ortega/

Cameron Boyce‘s Descendants director is paying tribute to the late actor on social media, recalling his “immeasurable talent” and “kindness and generosity.” Boyce died on Saturday from an ongoing medical condition. He was 20.

“My Love, Light and Prayers go out to Cameron and his Family,” director Kenny Ortega shared on Instagram late Saturday. “Cameron brought Love, Laughter and Compassion with him everyday I was in his presence. His talent, immeasurable. His kindness and generosity, overflowing. It has been an indescribable honor and pleasure to know and work with him. I will see you again in all things loving and beautiful my friend. I will search the stars for your light. Rest In Peace Cam. You will always be My Forever Boy!”

Boyce played Cruella de Vil’s son Carlos in all three Descendants movies. His other Disney Channel credits included starring in Jessie from 2011 to 2015, as well as guest-starring in Liv and Maddie, BUNK’D and Austin & Ally.

“It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron,” a spokesperson for the Boyce family said in a statement. “He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated. The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him. We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother.”

Lives remembered: Fenella Fielding, 1927 – 2018 https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-fenella-fielding-1927-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-fenella-fielding-1927-2018/#respond Sat, 22 Sep 2018 06:37:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-fenella-fielding-1927-2018/

Sealing her fate as Britain’s first lady of double entendre, this appearance would eclipse the accomplished stage actress’s prior achievements and Fielding found it difficult to shake off the comedic reputation it bestowed upon her.

Fenella Marion Feldman was born in the east London borough of Hackney to cinema manager Philip and his wife Tilly.

Despite his occupation, her father detested the idea his daughter would appear on the silver screen and would hit her.

The family moved to Edgware in 1940 where she studied at North London Collegiate School.

Enjoying dance classes as a child, Fielding won a scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

She attended for a year but was forced to drop out by her parents, who enrolled her on a secretarial course.

This was devastating for Fielding who attempted suicide by swallowing a concoction of pills.

Desperate to fly the nest, she moved into a flat in Mayfair which she shared with a high-end prostitute and began making cameo appearances at London’s upscale nightclubs.

Yearning to break into entertainment, Fielding worked as an assistant stage manager and understudy at a theatre.

She was given her first break when she accompanied actor Ron Moody, whom she had met at an amateur production at the London School of Economics, to an audition. By 1958 she was a star in satirical musical Valmouth at the Saville Theatre.

Enthralling audiences with her husky voice and seductive looks, by the end of the decade she had become a regular face on the showbiz circuit, appearing in the comedy revue Pieces Of Eight written by Harold Pinter and Peter Cook, and Hancock’s Half Hour.

By 1960 Fielding had landed a film role in Doctor In Love and two years later was in Doctor In Distress.

While enjoying a distinguished career in theatre, including as Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, in 1966 she gave her most memorable line in the comedy classic Carry On Screaming! But achieving household name status had drawbacks; her public image as the seductive Valeria was cemented and it became increasingly difficult to secure heavyweight stage roles.

By the late 1970s Fielding had drifted into obscurity and was declared bankrupt after an agent conned her.

Penniless and forced to sell her home, she had no option but to sign on the dole. In 1982 a lifeline came when the Italian director Federico Fellini asked her to appear in a film but, already committed to a play at Chichester Festival Theatre, she turned it down.

“I thought it would be dishonourable to let them down,” she later recalled.

“I would say that’s the thing I really regret.”

Aged 79, Fielding toured Ireland with a production of The Vagina Monologues. In 2017 she published her memoirs, Do You Mind If I Smoke? and was awarded an OBE at the beginning of this year. Working until her death, she was in the studio recording for LBC radio the day before she suffered a stroke.

Although unmarried, she revealed that she once had two concurrent partners for 20 years, neither of whom knew about the other’s existence.

Fielding is survived by her brother Basil, a Conservative life peer.

Lives remembered: Diane Leather, 1933 – 2018 https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-diane-leather-1933-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-diane-leather-1933-2018/#respond Sat, 22 Sep 2018 04:14:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-diane-leather-1933-2018/

Coming as it did just 23 days after Roger Bannister’s highly-publicised first ever sub four-minute mile, Leather’s own achievement did not draw the same attention.

While Bannister was whisked to London for TV appearances and rewarded with a knighthood, Leather went for a quiet celebratory drink with her coach.

Her feat was never ratified and speaking in 2014 she told Athletics Weekly: “I wasn’t surprised. It’s just the way it was.”

However her world record was made ever the more extraordinary as, unlike Bannister, Leather raced without pacemakers and led from beginning to end.

Diane Susan Leather was born in Streetly, Staffordshire. One of six children, she was the only daughter of James, a surgeon, and his wife Mabel.

As a child she enjoyed sport, playing netball and lacrosse at Harrogate Ladies’ College. Later, Leather enrolled at Birmingham College of Technology (now Aston University) to study chemistry.

Inspired by the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Leather joined her local athletics club, Birchfield Harriers.

She soon made her mark, as part of a team that broke the world record for the 3×880 yard relay in her first year at the club.

Her coach, Dorette Nelson Neal insisted she train for the mile – at the time not recognised as a suitable distance for women by international athletics governing bodies – and she set the women’s best time with 5 minutes and 2 seconds in 1953.

The following year she made history, running a mile in 4 minutes and 59 seconds. Over the course of her career she went on to take a further 15 seconds off her time, holding on to the world record for eight years. In 1959 she married Peter Charles, an engineer she met at university.

The next year she competed at the Olympics in Rome before retiring from competitive running at 27. In 2008 she was named second in a list of all-time great 1,500m runners by Athletics Weekly, behind Dame Kelly Holmes.

Her husband predeceased her in 2017. She is survived by sons Matthew, Hamish and Rufus and daughter Lindsey.

Lives remembered: Tony Hiller, 1927- 2018 https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-tony-hiller-1927-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-tony-hiller-1927-2018/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 06:15:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-tony-hiller-1927-2018/

Born in London’s East End, Hiller was the son of Sam and Sarah, both of whom were musicians. At 18 he began working as a London taxi driver but when he wasn’t behind the wheel he and his brother Irving would “play at writing songs”.

Together the siblings would visit Denmark Street in London’s Soho area, trying to sell their work for as little as £20. Enjoying the success that unfolded they soon became double act The Hiller Brothers, touring the world and performing alongside household names such as Matt Monro and Kathy Kirby.

“We worked with the biggest but we weren’t big,” he would later recall. In 1970 Hiller co-wrote United We Stand for pop group Brotherhood Of Man – their first hit. Having been recorded by more than 100 different artists since its original release the song has come to symbolise hope and strength in the face of adversity.

“I never intended for United We Stand to be an anthem,” Hiller once said.

“It was written as a love song but for some reason people took a shine to it and used it for all sorts of purposes.

“Often when people want to show solidarity they sing United We Stand. I’m very proud of that.”

Six years later Hiller rocketed to international fame after writing Save Your Kisses For Me for Brotherhood Of Man’s Eurovision debut. Winning the contest the song also became the biggest selling UK single of the year. He went on to write a further two UK No 1 hits for the group: Angelo in 1977 and Figaro a year later.

The veteran songwriter also won a raft of awards during his career, including six Ivor Novello Awards and a BASCA Gold Badge Award for his great contribution to the music industry. Hiller was a cherished member of the Society Of Distinguished Songwriters where he mentored other aspiring songwriters. He is survived by his wife Leigh.

Lives remembered: Peter Fisher, 1950 – 2018 https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-peter-fisher-1950-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-peter-fisher-1950-2018/#respond Sat, 25 Aug 2018 05:54:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-peter-fisher-1950-2018/

Upholding the strictest of confidences he maintained he had never treated the Queen for anything more than feeling “under the weather”.

Fisher studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and while there he went on a field trip to China where his eyes were opened to the world of alternative medicine.

He was fascinated when he saw a “woman having surgery on her abdomen without an anaesthetic”, the only means employed to alleviate her pain was the insertion of three acupuncture needles.

He recalled: “The scales fell from my eyes” and he noted this practice was not something he had been taught as an undergraduate.

Returning to the UK, Fisher sought to learn more but it wasn’t until he suffered a mystery illness of his own that he became convinced of its effectiveness.

After being told by doctors that “nothing could be done” for him Fisher successfully administered his own homeopathic treatment.

He trained at Westminster Hospital Medical School and then joined the research department of St Bartholomew’s Hospital where he met like-minded individuals.

Along with a co-worker, Fisher published one of the first studies into the discipline in the British Medical Journal and after establishing himself as an expert in the field, edited the journal Homeopathy from 1986 onwards.

But in 2001 even his harshest critics couldn’t ignore the fact he had been invited to become a member of the Royal Medical Household.

He served as homeopathic physician to the Queen for 17 years, providing complementary methods to conventional medical treatments.

He was director of research at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine, where he worked for 35 years and was president of the Faculty of Homeopathy.

He died in a cycling accident and is survived by his wife Nina, whom he married in 1997, and two daughters Lily and Evie.

The Facts of Life's Charlotte Rae Dead at 92, Remembered by Costars https://briefnews.eu/the-facts-of-lifes-charlotte-rae-dead-at-92-remembered-by-costars/ https://briefnews.eu/the-facts-of-lifes-charlotte-rae-dead-at-92-remembered-by-costars/#respond Mon, 06 Aug 2018 09:23:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-facts-of-lifes-charlotte-rae-dead-at-92-remembered-by-costars/

Charlotte Rae, best known for her role as Mrs. Garrett on both Diff’rent Strokes and its spinoff The Facts of Life, has died at the age of 92. Rae was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer seven years ago, and in April 2017, she revealed that she had bone cancer.

Rae’s first major TV role came when she was cast in the recurring role of Sylvia Schnauser on Car 54, Where Are You? back in 1962. She later appeared in episodes of All in the Family, Barney Miller, Good Times, The Partridge Family, The Defenders, Sesame Street and Love, American Style. She also had a starring role on the short-lived sitcom Hot L Baltimore.

In 1978, Rae was cast as Diff’rent Strokes housekeeper Edna Garrett, a role which would go on to define her career. The character got her own spinoff, The Facts of Life, in 1979, which found Mrs. Garrett serving as house mother at a girls’ boarding school. She earned an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series in 1982.

Rae departed The Facts of Life after Season 7, at which point Cloris Leachman stepped in as Mrs. Garrett’s sister, Beverly Ann, for the last two seasons. Rae eventually reprised her role as Mrs. Garrett in the 2001 TV-movie The Facts of Life Reunion. The cast reunited once more at the 2011 TV Land Awards.

Rae continued to work frequently later in life, guest-starring in select episodes of Sisters, ER, The King of Queens and Pretty Little Liars. Her last TV credit was a 2015 episode of Girl Meets World.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Sony Pictures Television is in the very early stages of developing a Facts of Life reboot.

EW.com first reported the news of Rae’s death.

Mindy Cohn and Kim Fields were among the former cast and peers to first react to Rae’s passing:

Heath Ledger died 10 years ago today: His greatest performances remembered https://briefnews.eu/heath-ledger-died-10-years-ago-today-his-greatest-performances-remembered/ https://briefnews.eu/heath-ledger-died-10-years-ago-today-his-greatest-performances-remembered/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 13:28:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heath-ledger-died-10-years-ago-today-his-greatest-performances-remembered/

The Australian-born star racked up an impressive number of credits across his career, and would have turned 39 this April.

He was 28 when he died in New York City on January 22, 2008.

Here we look back on his finest projects.

Patrick Verona in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Teen movies are easy to mock, possibly because it’s a genre so often mishandled. But every now and again a true classic comes along, and 10 Things I Hate About You was just that.

Loosely taking its cues from Shakespeare’s hugely controversial Taming of the Shrew, it provided a breakout success for Ledger – as well as his co-stars Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The movie received generally positive reviews from critics and and grossed just over $ 50 million at the box office.

Ennis Del Mar – Brokeback Mountain (2005)

That Brokeback Mountain did not win Best Picture remains one of the biggest Oscars shocks of all time – and it was the performances of Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal that resonated very well with critics and audiences.

Brokeback was a huge success; getting $ 178.1 million at the box office against a modest budget of just $ 14 million.

The Joker – The Dark Knight (2008)

The role for which Ledger won his posthumous Oscar, The Dark Knight was in post-production at the time of his death.

His portrayal of the character is often cited as the definitive one: in addition to the Oscar, he also won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Saturn Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

William Thatcher – A Knight’s Tale (2001)

A medieval adventure comedy, A Knight’s Tale could so easily have been terrible – but actually it was a well-executed, funny affair; anchored by a brilliant lead performance by Ledger.

A Knight’s Tale received some criticism in reviews at the time, but has held up as a great comedy classic for the whole family.

Sonny Grotowski in Monster’s Ball (2001)

This was the movie that won Halle Berry her historic Best Actress Oscar, and Ledger was also phenomenal in a supporting role.

Monster’s Ball still holds up: on Rotten Tomatoes it has a strong 85% rating.
