Super Mario Maker 2 seeks to earn that sequel designation via a ton of new features. [credit:
Nintendo ]
The latest “Nintendo Direct” announcement video came packed with surprises, and none shattered more earth than the big Mario and Zelda games at the video’s beginning and end.
As seen in the above gallery, Super Mario Maker 2 is heading to Nintendo Switch in June 2019, and it appears to include enough new tools and systems to rank as a bona fide sequel, if not at least a serious “deluxe” edition. The revealed footage sticks primarily to the four games that the original build-your-own-platformer game supported (SMB1, SMB3, SMW, NSMB), but it adds tools like auto-scrolling paths, clear tubes, piranha plant pathing, more platforms, and the cat-suit power-up.

Beady-eyed Link matches the “hand-sculpted” look that pervades this Link’s Awakening remake footage.
Though Nintendo issued only a vague release window of “2019,” the company had a lot to showcase for its upcoming, surprise-announced remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. This apparently faithful remake retains the 1993 Game Boy game’s top-down perspective (along with its occasional drops into underground side-scrolling), but it otherwise remakes the entire game as a fully 3D adventure.

It’s fair to say that a lot of Call of Duty rumours appears around the start of a new year.
The cyclical nature of how new COD games are released means that fans can expect news to start dropping in January, followed by a big announcement in the Spring.
And so far, rumours are swirling that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 is being released in 2019.
Infinity Ward has started dropping hints in regards to the next COD title that they are working.
These include a lot of images with skull motifs, which made fans think of Call of Duty Ghosts.
Kotaku’s Jason Schreier recently posted that this isn’t the case, meaning it will likely be another sub-franchise.
The chances of the studio braving another new instalment following the criticism Infinite Warfare received seems slim.
So could the skull imagery be tied to Lieutenant Simon “Ghost” Riley from Modern Warfare 2 instead?
It certainly seems to make sense; The Express heard last year that a Modern Warfare 2 remaster project was in the works, but never materialised.
It sounded like another standalone project from Raven Software; however, recent rumours suggest that Modern Warfare 4 could include a remastered MW2 campaign instead.
Leaked information doing the rounds online suggests that an MW2 campaign will be included in the Modern Warfare 4 bundle, while the game’s multiplayer will offer modern multiplayer gameplay.
For the time being, this remains just a rumour and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
There’s also the chance that Activision is planning to release two COD games this year, much like they did with Modern Warfare Remastered.
Call of Duty is a franchise that suffers a large number of leaks before an official announcement or release.
So it seems pretty likely we will hear more about what is being planned for 2019 before the official trailers are released.
Former Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg made comments about the next three-year slate of COD games in development back in 2018.
This included Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and means at least two more titles are being hyped up before their release.
During an earnings report for Activision, Hirshberg commented: “It suffices to say I think we have the best 3 year slate in Call of Duty’s history, which is really saying something given this franchise’s history.
“And I think we’ve got multiple different game universes that we know our players love on tap, so obviously, more to come on that.”
With those comments in mind, Call of Duty 2019 could indeed include a return to one of the franchise’s most popular universes.
Nintendo Switch news this week includes reports that Bandai Namco could be about to announce a very popular new remaster.
According to games writer and editor Marcus Sellars, the publisher is about to reveal several new projects.
And one of these just so happens to be a Dark Souls Remaster for the Nintendo Switch games list.
This new project would also reportedly appear on the PS4 and Xbox One, meaning a good time is coming for all From Software fans.
Currently, only Xbox One fans can download and play Dark Souls, due to the console’s Backwards Compatibility program.
However, like most BC games, Dark Souls doesn’t offer any enhanced gameplay or graphics on the Xbox One, or Xbox One X.
It should be noted that the original Twitter messages confirming this have now been deleted.
And it will be worth taking any rumours with a grain of salt at this point, although earlier reports from 2017 also claimed that discussions were being held over releasing all three games in the Dark Souls saga on the Nintendo Switch. This would also include all Dark Souls DLC.
From Software did recently tease a new project after showing a clip of an upcoming game at The Game Awards.
Fans have been hoping for some kind of news on a sequel to Bloodborne, although nothing has been revealed on the subject.
“First thing I thought of was the Shadows of Yarnham,” one fan commented after seeing the footage shown at the Game Awards.
But while fans were excited to see what could be a new Bloodborne 2 tease, there was also talk of something else too.
“Shadows Die Twice” was a message that also popped up during the short clip, suggesting it could have something to do with an old From Software title.
Shadow Tower was a first-person view role-playing game developed by From Software in 1998.
A sequel, Shadow Tower Abyss, was also released for the PlayStation 2, meaning this could be From Software going for a trilogy on new consoles.
As mentioned above, more could be revealed during PSX, which kicks off tomorrow.
You can watch the new From Software trailer above, via the YouTube embed.
While fans are hoping for some big new announcement from Bandai Namco soon, it appears that more Nintendo Switch games announcements are coming our way in January 2018.
While not confirmed from Nintendo themselves, a new online leak suggests that a Nintendo Direct is being planned.
This comes from an apparent leak stemming from EA, who will be reportedly showing off one of their new titles during it.
This new information should be taken with a grain of salt as it’s hard to determine if the source material is real.
However, if it does prove true, it appears that Nintendo will be showing off new third-party support very soon.
One of those games will be Fe, which will reportedly be released in February 2018, following the Nintendo showcase.
There are also other reports suggesting that Metroid Prime 4 could be another title shown off via a new teaser trailer.
There were hopes that something connected to Metroid Prime would be shown during the Game Awards 2017, although that was eventually dominated by Fortnite Battle Royale, PUBG and the new Zelda Breath of the Wild DLC.
It would give me great pleasure to name Twilight Princess the best Zelda game of the 2000s (you heard me, Skyward Sword fans), but it would be untrue — that crown belongs to Okami. First released in 2006 as one of the last games to come out on PS2, its gorgeous watercolor-style animation, mystical world and magical paintbrush mechanics made it an instant classic. Two (and a half) console generations later, PS4, Xbox One and PC owners are getting a remastered version on December 12th for $ 20.

For the uninitiated, the Japanese folklore-inspired Okami follows the wolf goddess Amaterasu’s journey to purge ancient Japan of evil along with her tiny, magic brush-wielding pal Issun. It follows standard Zelda progression — adventure, gain powers, defeat bosses — but in tranquil nature rendered in absolutely stunning ink-and-watercolor design. Developer Clover Studios originally styled the game realistically, but pivoted to its now-iconic painterly look. Unfortunately, Okami was a critical but not commercial success, and following an exodus of Clover’s top staff, parent company Capcom closed the studio shortly after the game’s release.
The game became a much-beloved cult classic and was ported to the Wii (making spotty use of its motion controls for the brush gameplay) and was later remastered for PS3 in 2012. The newest version out this December, Okami HD, will feature 4K resolution on the Xbox One X, PS4 Pro and PC. Don’t be discouraged, vanilla PS4/Xbox One console owners: This game is worth picking up if you’ve never had the pleasure. All formats will be digital-only releases for $ 20, so download ’em while they’re hot.

Enlarge / Recovered 3D meshes help, but pretty much everything about this Crash remaster image had to be rebuilt from scratch. (credit: Activision)
LOS ANGELES—The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy lands on consoles next week, and, from what I can tell, the game will offer very little in the way of surprises. All three of the series’ original PlayStation 1 games are coming back in a single package. From what I’ve played at multiple events, every brutally tough platforming level seems to be returning with faithful controls and substantially redrawn, HD-friendly graphics.
Activision invited Ars to check out the near-final game one more time ahead of its June 30 launch, and, for some reason, they thought the most exciting news they had to offer was a new playable character. (Crash’s sister, Coco, will be playable in all three games, but she’s a cosmetic swap with zero unique moves.)
But after hammering developer Vicarious Visions with question after question, I got something more interesting out of the team: the amount of from-scratch work that was required to make this remaster.

For many veteran gamers, Planescape: Torment was a definitive role-playing title — it combined an unusual setting with a deep story, memorable dialogue and gameplay mechanics that still hold up. If you’re one of those fans, you won’t have long to wait to relieve that experience on modern hardware. Beamdog, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have revealed that they’re launching Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition on April 11th. As with most better remastering efforts, this involves more than a little spit and polish to make the game run on newer hardware.
The rework polishes the game with a 4K-friendly interface on Macs and Windows PCs, a remastered soundtrack and interface tweaks (such as area zooming and quick looting) that reflect 18 years of progress. It even has the help of lead Torment designer Chris Avellone, who’s curating various fixes and upgrades to create his ideal vision of the game. This is also the first version of the RPG built for mobile, with both Android and iOS versions arriving the same day. Suffice it to say that you’ll want a tablet if you go that route, since there’s a lot of info to juggle at the same time.
Beamdog is releasing the computer versions of Planescape through its own store, GOG, the Mac App Store and Steam for $ 20. On mobile, you’ll be paying $ 10 through either the App Store or Google Play. We’d say the price is reasonable in either case. Beamdog estimates that a typical playthrough will last for 50 or more hours, and there’s a distinct chance you’ll be happy whether you’re nostalgic for Torment or just want to sink your teeth into a classic Dungeons & Dragons experience.

A long-rumored StarCraft remaster for computers was finally unveiled on Saturday by Blizzard Entertainment, set for launch in “summer 2017.” No pricing info was announced, but Blizzard has confirmed quite a few other details about the 4K-friendly release.
For one, it will be preceded by a patch to the 19-year-old StarCraft: Brood War client, and this new 1.18a client will reportedly not change the mechanics of the game. To prove that out, this patched version will still be able to connect to players using the existing 1.16 patch (which came out all the way back in 2009). Among other tweaks, like better compatibility with newer versions of Windows, the new patch will include two important updates: the ability to connect to and play against owners of the upcoming remastered version, and the change to a wholly free product. Once the patch goes live, the original StarCraft Anthology will be free-as-in-beer to download and play in both single- and multiplayer modes.

The Nier Automata release date is coming soon, but what about the people who missed the original Nier?
Square Enix hasn’t ruled out a potential Nier remaster, but only if there’s a big enough demand.
That’s according to Nier Automata producer Yosuke Saito, who said that while there are no plans for a remake, that could all change.
“If NieR: Automata sells well and there is a big demand for a remaster then there is always a possibility,” he told Express Online.
“As I said, this depends on how well NieR: Automata sells – we do not currently have any plans to re-release the first game.”
Unfortunately, there was no comment on Xbox One backwards compatibility for the original Nier, despite 4,500 people voting for an Xbox One update.
That might not be an issue, however, as Nier Automata has all but been ruled out for Xbox One.
Despite the original Nier coming to Xbox 360, Square Enix and Platinum Games have said that there are no plans to release the sequel on Xbox One.
Saito explained why the company made this decision, revealing that the Xbox One market in Japan wasn’t as strong.
He said: “There are currently no plans to release on this platform.
“The main reason for this is that the Japanese market for Xbox One is not strong, so the decision was made to focus on PlayStation 4 rather than to split our efforts across two platforms.”
Nier Automata is the follow-up to 2010 action RPG Nier, which was released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
The game paid homage to multiple genres, featuring hack and slash elements, as well as shoot-em-up gameplay, dungeon crawling and even a text adventure section.
Development for the sequel is being handled by Platinum Games, although series creator Taro Yoko is directing.
Nier Automata has been given a March 10 UK release date on PS4 and PC.
