Another day, another Seth Rogen TV project. Rogen already has TV shows like Preacher and Future Man under his belt, and he’s also been working on The Boys for Amazon. Now he has something new: a remake of the British series Plebs. The original series “follows three desperate young men from the suburbs as they try to get laid, hold down jobs and climb the social ladder in the big city – a city that happens to be Ancient Rome.” Per ComingSoon, Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures will produce the U.S. remake with Rise Films credited as co-producer. I have no opinion on this since I haven’t seen the original Plebs. Instead, I’ll use this space to say Rogen’s dramatic turn in Steve Jobs is highly underrated. Go watch Steve Jobs!

Lonergan Amazon

Kenneth Lonergan Reunites With Amazon

Kenneth Lonergan, the filmmaker behind You Can Count On Me, had great success when he teamed with Amazon for Manchester By The Sea. Lonergan will now re-team with Amazon. The filmmaker has closed an exclusive first-look deal with the company. As Amazon reports, the two-year deal for directing and writing will cover both film and television projects. “I’m thrilled to renew my connection to Amazon Studios. They’ve done amazing work wherever they’ve turned their attention, they did a perfect job with Manchester by the Sea, and it’s a pleasure to be in business with them again,” said Lonergan.

Lonergan is a great filmmaker, and while Casey Affleck’s involvement with Manchester By The Sea has tarnished it a bit, I still think it’s one of the best films of the decade. I look forward to seeing what Amazon does next with Lonergan. A recent report indicated Amazon might be scaling back on their indie films, but this Lonergan news is a good sign for the future.

BoJack Horseman Team Moves to Amazon With Adult Animated Series

Speaking of Amazon: they want to get in on the adult animated series action. To do this, they’ve turned to the experts: the team behind Netflix’s brilliant adult animated series BoJack Horseman. BoJack creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg and BoJack writer-producer Kate Purdy have created Undone for Amazon. The adult animated series will feature the voice of Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar. Deadline reports the series will explore the “elastic nature of reality through its central character, Alma, voiced by Salazar. After getting into a near fatal car accident, Alma discovers she has a new relationship with time and uses this ability to find out the truth about her father’s death.”

I love BoJack Horseman, so I can’t wait for this. Undone will premiere on Amazon in 2019.

Hasan Minhaj netflix show

The Daily Show’s Hasan Minhaj Lands His Own Netflix Talk Show

Hasan Minhaj, one of the correspondents on The Daily Show, has just landed his own talk show gig at Netflix. The streaming service has committed to a 32 episode order, which makes Minhaj the first Indian-American host of a weekly comedy talk show. According to Netflix, the comedy show will “explore the modern cultural and political landscape with depth and sincerity. Each week, Minhaj will bring his unique comedic voice and storytelling skill to investigate the larger trends shaping our fragmented world.”

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Netflix family as the country braces for another election season. And like you, I cannot wait to find out who Putin picks this time,” said Minhaj.

I haven’t watched The Daily Show since Jon Stewart left, so I’m not very familiar with Minhaj’s work. But the world needs more comedy from more voices right now, so I’ll be checking out his show when it arrives.

Jeffrey Tambor Transparent

Transparent Not Returning This Year

Jeffrey Tambor was recently fired for Transparent for allegations of sexual misconduct. As a result of Tambor’s departure, it’s unlikely Transparent will return this year. THR reports production on the series likely won’t resume until December. Tambor’s exit has left the show at a crossroads, and it’s unclear now if Amazon will recast Tambor’s role or write the actor’s character off the show completely. No matter what happens, it’s very unlikely a new season of Transparent will air in 2018.

J.J. Abrams is Remaking Anime Hit ‘Your Name’ – Can It Actually Be Done Well? https://briefnews.eu/j-j-abrams-is-remaking-anime-hit-your-name-can-it-actually-be-done-well/ https://briefnews.eu/j-j-abrams-is-remaking-anime-hit-your-name-can-it-actually-be-done-well/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 15:49:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/j-j-abrams-is-remaking-anime-hit-your-name-can-it-actually-be-done-well/ Your Name Kimi No Na Wa

(Welcome to The Soapbox, the space where we get loud, feisty, political, and opinionated about anything and everything. In this edition: can a Hollywood remake accurately capture the essence of one of Japan’s biggest recent hits?)

The anime craze is continuing, and not even the highest grossing movie in Japan in more than a decade is immune to a Hollywood adaptation.

Your Name – a melancholic coming-of-age film that swept the Japanese box office in 2016, beating out Hollywood tentpoles like Rogue One and Captain America: Civil War – is being adapted into a live-action film by J.J. Abrams and Oscar-nominated Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer. While these names would be an impressive combination for any other film, there is the inevitable consternation that yet another beloved Japanese anime will be lost in translation.

Your Name is a sublime, metaphysical tour-de-force, and one of my favorite movies of the year so far. Naturally, I – as well as its many fans who don’t want its impact to be watered down – feel defensive of it. Makoto Shinkai‘s film takes a comedic body-swap premise, throws in a dash of time travel, and transforms the film into an allegory about longing and emptiness. Its stunning visuals proved to not only be a testament to the limitless potential of hand-drawn animation, but a pivotal foundation for its brilliant and heart-breaking narrative.

Now Abrams, who has helmed the modern reimaginings of sci-fi franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars and has dabbled in the metaphysical himself with TV series like Lost, is hoping to bring this animated tale to Hollywood. Paramount Pictures and Abrams’ production company Bad Robot are working with the animated film’s producers at Toho to develop a live-action remake, Variety reports.

Genki Kawamura, the producer of the original film, praised the choice of Abrams’ team to helm the Your Name remake, saying:

“Just like in the film it feels like a dream. Mr. Abrams and his team have captivated audiences in their masterful reinvention of known properties. And Mitsuha and Taki have found a perfect narrator, Mr. Heisserer, to tell their sci-fi infused love story, which gave the film such drive. The meetings so far have been creatively stimulating with fantastic ideas that no doubt will make for a great movie. I am greatly honored to work with these incredible creators in bringing to audiences the Hollywood live-action version of ‘Your Name.’”

Your Name director Makoto Shinkai has been silent on the news so far. While a Hollywood remake of his story is surely flattering, I wonder how personal of a story it is to him. Shinkai has worked on the premise before in 2007’s 5 Centimeters Per Second, a bittersweet and languid short film that also explored the idea of longing for someone. Your Name feels like a spiritual sequel to that, albeit with a happier ending, and a Hollywood remake threatens to uproot the film from its inspiration. But let’s talk about that.

Anime Adaptations Don’t Have a Great Track Record in Hollywood

First things first, Hollywood doesn’t have a stellar history with anime adaptations. The news of the Your Name remake comes on the tails of the critical and commercial failure of the polarizing Ghost in the Shell and Netflix’s universally panned Death Note – both of which faced controversies over whitewashing. The fact that Hollywood is approaching one of the most beloved animes in recent history is bold at best, and disrespectful at worst.

Anime adaptations inevitably bring with them tons of cultural baggage. Can an adaptation pay homage to Japanese culture without feeling exhibitionist? Will the movie even bother to acknowledge the original property’s Japanese roots? Or will it make a misguided choice to write that cultural appropriation into the narrative itself? It’s a tricky line to walk, especially when you’re dealing with issues of race and representation. Asian and Asian-American actors have fewer chances to appear in complex roles, and because of the Japanese setting of many anime stories, these actors see small windows of opportunity. That is why these live-action adaptations of anime properties are held under such an intense lens: because they’re ostensibly taking away the opportunities for Asian actors, and giving them to more “marketable” white stars.

But as pop culture inevitably becomes more globalized, we have to ask the question: can a cross-cultural anime adaptation be made? Vulture‘s Emily Yoshida has a good threshold for these East-meets-West adaptations, and it comes from a quote from her fellow writer Craig Jenkins: “It looks like collaboration, not costume, like advocacy, not avoidance.” With the partnership between Bad Robot and Toho, we’re already halfway there. Now to the question of Your Name‘s roots: just how Japanese is it?

Can ‘Your Name’ Be Recontextualized Into a Universal Story?

Your Name is unlike any anime that has been adapted for Hollywood before. There are no robots, no magical girls, no death gods. Instead, it’s just about two unexceptional teens and their mundane love story, as they come of age in two very different backgrounds. Aside from the metaphysical, time-twisty nature of it all, it’s as ordinary as you can get. In fact, Your Name is unique not just from the animes crossing over to the U.S., but to most anime films. The Japanese movie industry doesn’t have quite the resources that Hollywood has, and so most of their live-action films explore the mundanity of everyday life — dramas, slice of life films, tragedies. It’s in anime films where you can find big budget adventures and extraordinary stories, because they’re far cheaper to make — which is where you find such genre-bending fare like those from Satoshi Kon or Hayao Miyazaki. But Shinkai, who has been informally dubbed the next Miyazaki, is part of a wave of directors bringing anime cinema back to basics — though with your requisite surreal or sci-fi twists, of course.

At its bare bones, Your Name is a movie about the wistful longing for…something. Whether it be a person, a way of life, or a lost love, Your Name taps into that melancholy of feeling an absence. Before they fall in love, Mitsuha is a country girl longing for a life in the city, while Taki is a city boy who has a vague, recurring memory that nags him. Their longing — for inclusion, for love — is an understated but powerful emotion.

It’s actually an idea that Hollywood films have explored before — think Serendipity, or any movies that question fate or prop up cyclical, self-fulfilling narratives. Heck, Arrival brilliantly tapped into that — which is what makes me hesitate to condemn this adaptation fully. Heisserer is a talented writer whose screenplay for Arrival played with similar ideas of time, love, and destiny.

When it comes down to it, Your Name is a universal story — the feeling it evokes that I’m trying to convey in so many words even has a single word for it in Portuguese. So if recontextualized successfully – like, say, The Departed or The Magnificent Seven – it could tell a compelling story. Collaboration, not costume.

Warner Bros. is Remaking ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ — Again https://briefnews.eu/warner-bros-is-remaking-invasion-of-the-body-snatchers-again/ https://briefnews.eu/warner-bros-is-remaking-invasion-of-the-body-snatchers-again/#respond Sat, 22 Jul 2017 12:30:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/warner-bros-is-remaking-invasion-of-the-body-snatchers-again/ invasion of the body snatchers remake

Prepare for another Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The sci-fi classic is being targeted for another remake by Warner Bros., making this the fourth Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake since the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers was first adapted for the big screen in 1956.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the newest remake of The Body Snatchers after 2007’s loose adaptation The Invasion, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, will be written by horror screenwriter David Leslie Johnson and produced by John Davis of I, Robot and Chronicle. A director has not yet been announced.

Johnson has frequently worked with Warner Bros., recently penning the sequel to New Line’s horror hit The Conjuring. He also wrote the upcoming Conjuring 3 and is working on New Line/Warner Bros.’ Nightmare on Elm Street remake, THR reports.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which tells the story of parasitic aliens that control and replace the humans they come into contact with, has a long history of big screen adaptations. The first movie iteration of Jack Finney‘s science-fiction novel was 1956’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which director Don Siegel brought to the silver screen merely a year after The Body Snatchers was first published.

But the movie version that most people are familiar with is Philip Kaufman‘s 1978 remake starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy. That film has since become a sci-fi/horror classic, and remains the most critically-acclaimed adaptation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers today.

There were two more adaptations in the decades that followed — first, Abel Ferrara‘s 1993 Body Snatchers starring Gabrielle Anwar, then 2007’s The Invasion directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. Both films were met with tepid to negative critical reaction.

Here’s the synopsis of the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers film:

“In Santa Mira, California, Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) is baffled when all his patients come to him with the same complaint: their loved ones seem to have been replaced by emotionless impostors. Despite others’ dismissive denials, Dr. Bennell, his former girlfriend Becky (Dana Wynter) and his friend Jack (King Donovan) soon discover that the patients’ suspicions are true: an alien species of human duplicates, grown from plant-like pods, is taking over the small town.”

I’m honestly open to another remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers — the five adaptations so far show that it’s a strong, timeless story that can evoke the paranoia and fear in whichever era it’s made. The original premise of the plant-pod aliens may seem like B-movie schlock, but the enduring fear of losing control of your own agency and fate is real.

Remaking American financial regulation https://briefnews.eu/remaking-american-financial-regulation/ https://briefnews.eu/remaking-american-financial-regulation/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 00:39:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/remaking-american-financial-regulation/

AT FIRST blush, there is little to be excited about. The eighth executive order of Donald Trump’s infant presidency, signed on February 3rd, lists seven “core principles” for regulating America’s financial system. These include the prevention of bail-outs by taxpayers; advancing the American interest in international negotiations; and tidying the unruly thatch of federal regulation. The treasury secretary and regulators must report by early June on how well existing laws fit the bill. “There is little in the actual executive order that the Obama administration would have disagreed with,” says Doug Elliott of Oliver Wyman, a consulting firm.

And yet. Although the edict does not mention the Dodd-Frank act of 2010, which redefined financial regulation after the crisis of 2008, it is chiefly aimed at that law. (Another presidential memorandum paves the way to aborting a rule tightening financial advisers’ obligations to Americans saving for retirement.) Many banks, especially smaller ones, loathe the 848-page act and its reams of ensuing rules. According to Davis Polk, a law firm, 111 of its 390 “rule-making requirements” have not yet even been…
