In horror news that makes you go “hmm,” apparently 2008’s terrifying home invasion movie “The Strangers” is getting a remake. Deadline is reporting (via Fangoria) that a new “Strangers” movie is not only going to happen but that it’s already in production. And while the idea of messing with such a heart-poundingly intense original film might raise a few eyebrows, plot details about the new film honestly don’t sound like a direct remake so much as a continuation of the film’s universe a la 2018’s “The Strangers: Prey at Night.”

The new version of “The Strangers” will apparently feature “Riverdale” star Madelaine Petsch, AKA Cheryl Blossom, which is an inspired bit of casting if you ask me. Petsch will star alongside “Teen Wolf” actor Froy Gutierrez and “The Kings of Summer” actor Gabriel Basso. The film has already set a director, too: Renny Harlin, who’s helmed films as varying as “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,” “Deep Blue Sea,” and “Devil’s Pass.” Harlin didn’t direct the first two “Strangers” films, but apparently, there could be more on the horizon: Deadline is reporting that this will be the start of a trilogy, something producer Roy Lee hinted at last month.

A Whole Strangers Trilogy?

The new film will reportedly follow a woman and her boyfriend as they drive cross-country to the Pacific Northwest to start a new life. When their car breaks down in Oregon, they stop at an Airbnb and end up tormented by three anonymous masked figures. In the first “Strangers” film, which starred Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler, the trio of near-silent killers targeted a couple whose relationship was unraveling after a failed proposal. That film took place at a rural summer home, while “The Strangers: Prey at Night,” a bloody and delightful sequel that shared little DNA with the original, saw the killers hunting down a family at a mobile home park.

“The Strangers” polarized audiences upon release thanks to its slow burn approach and frightening moments that felt less like jump scares and more like a deranged game of I Spy, but many consider the “true story”-inspired flick to be one of the most unnerving horror movies out there. For what it’s worth, it’s the only movie I know of that’s made multiple friends of mine scared to leave their homes. While I don’t think the original film is due for a straight remake, it sounds like this won’t be the same story, so I’m eager to see what Harlin, Petsch, and the rest of the team make of it.

My one fervent hope is that no matter how many “Strangers” movies we get, we aren’t given a backstory for the mask-wearing sadists who drive the films’ actions. After all, very few moments in horror are more frightening than their answer to Tyler’s fateful question, “Why are you doing this?” in the first film. “Because you were home,” they answer simply.

The remake of “The Strangers” does not yet have a release date.

Disney’s Pinocchio Review: Re-Watch The Original Instead Of This Wooden Remake https://briefnews.eu/disneys-pinocchio-review-re-watch-the-original-instead-of-this-wooden-remake/ https://briefnews.eu/disneys-pinocchio-review-re-watch-the-original-instead-of-this-wooden-remake/#respond Thu, 08 Sep 2022 10:00:39 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/disneys-pinocchio-review-re-watch-the-original-instead-of-this-wooden-remake/

“Pinocchio” is the latest Disney animated film to get an updated “live-action” remake in our contemporary times. The 1940 original is rightfully a classic — a film that pushed the boundary of what animation can bring to the screen and a story about a boy’s earnest search to find out who he is. Robert Zemeckis’ remake, however, fails to capture the heart of the original. It’s poorly paced, full of actors talking in multiple variants of accented English that make Dick Van Dyke’s Cockney accent seem good in comparison, and delivers major characters who are stilted, disjointed, and lacking life.

The story of Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio” largely follows that of the original film, inspired by “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi. An old woodworker named Geppetto wishes on a star for Pinocchio, a wooden puppet he made, to become a real boy. Geppetto gets his wish, although Pinocchio remains made of wood and must prove himself to become “a real boy.” With Jiminy Cricket as his conscience, Pinocchio faces unexpected adventures such as becoming famous (and summarily exploited and imprisoned for it); getting sent to a place called Pleasure Island where bad children literally become jackasses; and culminates inside the belly of a giant sea monster. Throughout this journey, Pinocchio learns to be brave, truthful, and unselfish. Just like a real boy.

The original Disney movie came out over 80 years ago and is a product of its time. And as such, the remake updates certain things that haven’t fared well over the decades (you won’t, for example, see any kids sucking on cigarettes and getting wasted). Those are welcome changes, but the movie fails on almost every other front, even though the major plot points are essentially the same. It’s like someone put all the components of the original into a blender and turned the appliance on without a lid. The result is a big old mess; a story barely cobbled together by a series of painfully bad jokes and horrific Southern, French, Italian, and New York “Newsies” accents.

The Movie Has Some Good Moments, But Not Many

Before I get into the bad, let me give credit to the good in “Pinocchio.” The movie does contain moments that aren’t terrible. Cynthia Erivo’s Blue Fairy, the magical being who bestows Pinocchio with sentience, has empathy and warmth that’s hard to find elsewhere in the film. Jaquita Ta’le’s performance as the puppeteer that befriends Pinocchio is also a bright spot in a tale full of garish characters whose personalities are as flimsy and superficial as the production’s visual effects.

Other good things? For those of you who like Easter eggs, Geppetto’s cuckoo clocks might do something for you, as we see renditions of everything from “Snow White” to “Roger Rabbit” in the clock’s designs. For those of you who don’t like overly obvious references to Disney’s IP portfolio, however, these references might just be another thing that makes you want to hurl your remote at your television.

One of the best things I can say about the movie is that it likely won’t be one that your child will want to watch over and over, which means you won’t have to, either. It starts out slow, with Geppetto (a befuddled Tom Hanks) giving a 20-minute rambling soliloquy about how he misses his dead wife and son and how he made a wooden boy puppet to fill his lonely days. Why didn’t he make a new son the more conventional way? As Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Jiminy Cricket explains later in his horrific pseudo-Southern accent, poor ol’ Geppetto doesn’t get out much. Apologies if you — like I did after Jiminy’s observation — get some imagery in your head that you never asked for. I’m just thankful that Geppetto decided to make a wooden replica of his dead son rather than his wife, although a Geppetto version of “Lars and the Real Girl” would arguably be a more intriguing and thought-provoking movie to watch.

A Not-Great Movie With A Muddled Message

If you and/or your child make it past the first 20 or so minutes of “Pinocchio,” you’ll be submitted to a series of wisecracks about Pinocchio being made of pine wood, so much so that you might think this is a crucial piece of information that comes into play later (reader, it does not, although you will be subjected to a horrible Chris Pine punchline). You’ll also have to endure the movie’s lackluster visual effects. It’s clear Disney knew it didn’t have a “Lion King” live-action remake on its hands and cut the budget accordingly. The CGI characters’ uncanny valleys are deep, and the spectacle of Pleasure Island is poorly rendered to the point of distraction. Pinocchio himself looks decent, although he did the “I can rotate my head 360 degrees” bit a few too many times, reminding you that puppets — even ones as annoyingly earnest as Pinocchio — are just plain creepy.

Monstro, the giant sea monster who swallows Pinocchio and Geppetto whole, is also suitably scary and one of the less-bad things about the film, especially the monster’s insides, which captures glimmers of the dark-yet-adventurous tone that I yearned for throughout the film.

And while the ending thankfully veers away from the message that one should strive to change themselves to make their parents happy, the “twist” occurs almost as an afterthought and is given barely a minute of genuflection before the credits begin. That crucial moment could be easily missed by a young person or a casual viewer, and in a worst-case scenario, might leave them thinking the opposite of the ultimate message the movie is trying to convey.

That’s not great, much like the rest of the movie. And as a parent myself, if faced with the choice of watching this film again with my child versus caving into her request to watch “Frozen” for the 35th million time, I would unhesitatingly get ready to hear “Let It Go” than rewatch this remake.

/Film Rating: 3 out of 10

“Pinocchio” starts streaming on Disney+ on September 8, 2022.

Benedict Cumberbatch to Star in Series Remake of Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps https://briefnews.eu/benedict-cumberbatch-to-star-in-series-remake-of-hitchcocks-the-39-steps/ https://briefnews.eu/benedict-cumberbatch-to-star-in-series-remake-of-hitchcocks-the-39-steps/#respond Sat, 20 Feb 2021 00:33:57 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/benedict-cumberbatch-to-star-in-series-remake-of-hitchcocks-the-39-steps/

Today is a good day because Benedict Cumberbatch has secured another paycheck. The Sherlock actor is slated to star in a limited series, The 39 Steps, inspired by John Buchan’s novel of the same name, our sister site Deadline reports. Alfred Hitchcock previously adapted the book into a 1935 film.

The updated series, which doesn’t have a network attached yet, is described as a “provocative, action-packed conspiracy thriller” that “updates the classic novel for our times,” per the official description. It will center on Richard Hannay, an ordinary man who unwittingly becomes a pawn in a far-reaching global conspiracy to reset the world order — “39 Steps that will change the world as we know it, with only Hannay standing in the way.”

The 1935 Hitchcock film starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll found Hannay (Donat) forced to go on the lam in Scotland after being falsely accused of murdering a secret agent. He soon becomes involved with an attractive woman (Carroll) while hoping to bring this spy ring to light and finally clear his name.

Cumberbatch will executive-produce the limited series, which was created by The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith. Edward Berger, who previously worked with Cumberbatch on the Showtime limited series Patrick Melrose, has signed on to direct.

Cumberbatch — who won an Emmy and three more nominations for playing the iconic detective in PBS’ Sherlock — is also set to reprise his role as the Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel movie sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is due for release in March 2022.

Leslie Jordan Joins Mayim Bialik in Fox’s Miranda Remake Call Me Kat https://briefnews.eu/leslie-jordan-joins-mayim-bialik-in-foxs-miranda-remake-call-me-kat/ https://briefnews.eu/leslie-jordan-joins-mayim-bialik-in-foxs-miranda-remake-call-me-kat/#respond Thu, 02 Apr 2020 18:03:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/leslie-jordan-joins-mayim-bialik-in-foxs-miranda-remake-call-me-kat/

Leslie Jordan has found the purr-fect next role on Fox’s upcoming Call Me Kat., TVLine has learned.

The show follows Kat (played by The Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik), a 39-year-old woman who struggles every day against society and her mother to prove that you can not have everything you want and still be happy. That’s why she spent the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a cat café in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Will & Grace alum will play Phil, one of Kat’s employees, who is responsible for baking all of the cat café’s pastries. Kat is helping him get his mojo back after a recent breakup with his longtime partner.

Call Me Kat, a remake of the BBC comedy Miranda, got a straight-to-series order at Fox in March. The cast includes Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story) as Kat’s high school crush Max, Swoosie Kurtz (Mike & Molly) as Kat’s mom, and Kyla Pratt (One on One) as Randi.

Fox’s adaptation is written by Darlene Hunt (The Big C) and counts Bialik and her Big Bang co-star Jim Parsons, as well as Miranda creator/star Miranda Hart, among its executive producers.

In addition to playing Will & Grace‘s Beverley Leslie, the prolific Jordan’s TV credits include American Horror Story, The Cool Kids, Desperate Housewives and Ally McBeal. His recent Instagram videos about being stuck at home during the coronavirus quarantine have garnered millions of views.

BET is the latest network to join the standalone streaming service party: The cabler announced Monday that it will launch BET+, a subscription VOD service focused on the African-American audience, this fall.

Though a specific launch date and price point have not yet been announced, BET+ will feature more than 1,000 hours of ad-free content, including original programming and fan-favorite series, movies and specials.

BET’s series adaptation of The First Wives Club — originally developed at Paramount Network, then relocated to BET — will now debut on the streaming service in the fall. Based on the 1996 film, the 10-episode First Wives Club stars Jill Scott (Black Lightning), Ryan Michelle Bathe (This Is Us) and Michelle Buteau (Enlisted) as three New York City women who form a united front after all of their marriages fall apart.

“African Americans are the leading consumers of streaming services, with higher SVOD adoption rates than other consumers, which is why we’re so excited to launch a premium product for this underserved audience,” said Scott Mills, president of BET Networks. “BET+ is a natural extension of BET’s linear network, which has been the leading home of black culture for decades. Our curated catalog and original programming will keep the BET+ content offering fresh, fueling subscriber growth, viewership and retention.”

At launch, BET+ will be available on iOS and Android devices. Do you plan to subscribe?

‘Mewtwo Strikes Back’ CG remake shows off its first trailer https://briefnews.eu/mewtwo-strikes-back-cg-remake-shows-off-its-first-trailer/ https://briefnews.eu/mewtwo-strikes-back-cg-remake-shows-off-its-first-trailer/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2019 04:45:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mewtwo-strikes-back-cg-remake-shows-off-its-first-trailer/

Pokémon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back debuted in 1998, and now we have a trailer for the CG-rendered reimagining that’s coming to theaters in Japan on July 12th. A post on the official site revealed that Masaomi Ichimura will return as a voice actor on the project, while the English account promised “a Pokémon experience like you’ve never seen before” and said details for its international release will come soon.

This is a movie that’s entirely separate from the Ryan Reynolds-voiced Detective Pikachu movie that we’ll see in May. Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution has a very different look from the original’s 2D animation, but it appears the plot is sticking closely to the original’s theme of the cloned psychic creature seeking revenge against humanity.

Resident Evil 2 Remake REVIEW: Good news and bad news for survival horror fans https://briefnews.eu/resident-evil-2-remake-review-good-news-and-bad-news-for-survival-horror-fans/ https://briefnews.eu/resident-evil-2-remake-review-good-news-and-bad-news-for-survival-horror-fans/#respond Wed, 16 Jan 2019 12:48:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/resident-evil-2-remake-review-good-news-and-bad-news-for-survival-horror-fans/

Resident Evil 2 Remake’s first review has gone live ahead of the January 25 release date.

And there’s good news and bad news for fans of the survival horror classic.

The good news is that the Resident Evil 2 Remake has been given a near perfect review score.

Japanese publication Famitsu has awarded the Resident Evil 2 remake an incredible 37 out of 40.

That’s based on three 9/10 review scores and one perfect 10/10 score (via Gamingbolt).

The only bad news is that there’s still over a week to wait before we can get our hands on the game.

Fans can currently try the 1-Shot demo, which gives players just 30 minutes to complete a mission in Raccoon City.

As the name suggests, once the time is up, there’s no chance to return and play again.

Capcom explains more: “If players complete the mission objective under 30 minutes, they can restart the mission until they use up their full time.

“If players succumb to the zombies during their 30 minutes, they can continue any number of times until the full 30 minutes have been reached.”

The reward is a brand new cinematic trailer that can be viewed even when the demo time is up.

With only 30 minutes on the clock, Capcom has released a selection of tips and tricks to get you through.

Players are encouraged to scavenge items to survive, paying close attention to red rooms that still have items within.

Fans should also think about when to battle zombies. Capcom recommends shooting different body parts (like legs) if you want to slow zombies down and preserve ammo.

You should also check your inventory often, with time stopping when you’re in the menu screens.

Resident Evil 2 Remake demo COUNTDOWN: Latest PS4 and Xbox One download news https://briefnews.eu/resident-evil-2-remake-demo-countdown-latest-ps4-and-xbox-one-download-news/ https://briefnews.eu/resident-evil-2-remake-demo-countdown-latest-ps4-and-xbox-one-download-news/#respond Mon, 07 Jan 2019 20:57:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/resident-evil-2-remake-demo-countdown-latest-ps4-and-xbox-one-download-news/

Has the countdown begun for the release of a new Resident Evil 2 Remake demo on PS4 and Xbox One?

That’s what fans are hoping for this week following a recent leak that suggests just that happening.

The hype surrounding the remake has built since new trailers were released in 2018. And now with less than a month to go before the exciting new project launches, fans are hoping for something special to drop.

A leak back in 2018 claimed that a new Resident Evil 2 demo would be released before the full game’s launch on PS4 and Xbox One.

An apparent Xbox Store mistake revealed that a new limited gameplay experience for Resi 2 would be launched in 2019.

To be exact, the listing claims the “Resident Evil 2 1-Shot Demo” will arrive on January 11.

And if that is true, we should start to hear something about very soon.

We can at least begin the countdown before the launch of the Resident Evil 2 Demo.

Nothing official has been said on the matter, but it would be a great move on the part of Capcom.

The original game did something similar when Resi 2 was launching, providing a demo disc of action.

This offered a taste of gameplay with Leon up to the first encounter with a Licker Monster at the Racoon City Police Department.

So there is hope Capcom will offer something like for their Resident Evil 2 Remake on consoles.

According to information connected to the leak, players will be able to die as many times as they want during the demo.

However, it will also be limited to a 30-minute timeframe, meaning that the Resi 2 demo will have specific limits in place.

It’s also unclear if the “1-Shot” demo title refers to it being available to play only once, or if it is pointing to something different.

It also looks like the new demo will only be available to download until the end of January when it will be take off the console storefront.

It should be noted that all of this information comes from leaks, meaning it must be taken with a pinch of salt.

And if something like this is in the works for PS4 and Xbox One, we should hear something very soon from Capcom.

A reported description from the listing reads: “This specially tuned demo allows you to experience the newly reimagined Resident Evil 2, but be warned: whilst you can continue as many times as you like after dying, you’ll only have 30 MINUTES to complete the demo.”

“Take in the horror atmosphere at your own pace, or make a desperate dash to solve all the puzzles Raccoon Police Department has to offer? The choice is yours!

“Originally released in 1998, Resident Evil 2, one of the most iconic games of all time, returns completely reimagined for next-gen consoles.

“Play individual campaigns for both Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield using an all-new 3rd person view.

“Explore the zombie-infested areas of Raccoon City, now stunningly re-built using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine.

“New puzzles, storylines and areas Note: This demo is available until 1/31/2019. You must be signed in and have an active internet connection to play.”
