'Love story over': Macron says EU can't rely on US for security – is it time to start wooing Russia? https://briefnews.eu/love-story-over-macron-says-eu-cant-rely-on-us-for-security-is-it-time-to-start-wooing-russia/ https://briefnews.eu/love-story-over-macron-says-eu-cant-rely-on-us-for-security-is-it-time-to-start-wooing-russia/#respond Sun, 02 Sep 2018 22:23:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/love-story-over-macron-says-eu-cant-rely-on-us-for-security-is-it-time-to-start-wooing-russia/ Emmanuel Macron’s remark that Europe can’t rely on the US for security, along with hints at rapprochement with Russia, show a rift in EU-Washington ties – a relationship that’s crumbling amid pressure to end sanction policies.

“Europe can no longer rely on the United States for its security,” the French President said in a recent foreign policy speech in Paris.

Relations between the US and France showed a promising start this year. “Handsy” interactions took place between Donald Trump and Macron during their summit in April, with the pair planting a tree together on the White House lawn. From those scenes, you would never guess that the allies would turn on each other only a month later.

The first fracture in relations occurred after Trump’s withdrawal from the landmark Iran nuclear deal. At that time, on the heels of Trump pulling out of the agreement, France’s economy minister urged Europe to stop acting like “US vassals” and continue trading with Tehran in defiance of what the “global economic policeman” had in store.

Trump’s import tariffs on steel and aluminium in June triggered a global backlash and retaliation from the EU. Macron called the measures “illegal” and warned that “economic nationalism leads to war,” adding that this is exactly “what happened in the 1930s.”

This “reformatting of transatlantic relations during the Trump presidency has gone very far,” Yury Rubinsky, head of the Center of French Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RT, adding that it was Washington that initiated such a shift.

Independent journalist Luc Rivet puts it another way. “The love story between Europe and the US has ended with fracas,” adding that the Trump administration “has simply put a crude light on an inevitable evolution.”

Are Trump’s newfound foes Russia’s new friends?

Ditching the Iran nuclear deal, quitting the Paris accord, and imposing steel and aluminium tariffs – the White House’s tough-guy rhetoric seems to be driving the EU further and further away from Washington. In fact, Trump set the stage for the rift between the US and the bloc during his presidential campaign, when he called the union a “hell-hole” and a “mess.” Later during his presidency, Trump noted that the US has “a lot of foes,” including the European Union.

That’s why in his speech about EU security, the French leader also stated that he wants to launch an exhaustive security review involving all of Europe’s partners, which also includes Russia. Days later, during a news conference on a visit to Helsinki, Macron insisted that it is in the EU’s interest “to have a strategic relationship with Turkey as well as with Russia that brings stability, that will in the long-term bring more strength and coherency.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes that Macron’s position wasn’t formed in a single day. “The US course of action on the international arena makes everyone think,” he said.

No country with “a little respect for itself” can tolerate when its policies are being dictated, the Russian top diplomat noted.

Yury Rubinsky, head of the Center of French Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, insists that when Macron mentioned Russia, he was mostly referring to the crisis in Syria, and, in particular, to the reconstruction of the war-torn country after the conflict is over. “Where would all migrants return [after the war is over]? Who would pay for the country’s reconstruction?” he asked.

Macron, a 40-year-old ambitious centrist who is now “desperately looking for a major international role in the EU,” has failed in many of his ambitions, Rivet believes. Yet the former investment banker may “lead the path of reconciliation,” says the journalist. In addition, Austria and Hungary, as well as Eurosceptic parties such as Alternative for Germany (AfD) and France’s National Rally (formerly Front National), are calling for closer ties with Russia and urging for sanctions to be canceled.

Europe is starting to understand that sanctions against Russia won’t work, while its economy suffers. “European business and agriculture lobbies have been trying for a long time to persuade European politicians to dismantle the set of mutual sanctions that mainly hurt European agribusiness,” Rivet said.

Yet Rivet admitted that Europe can do little to confront Washington. “The EU will simply negotiate, at best, to protect its companies and products selling and trading in the US, from more American sanctions,” he said. Speaking on the Iranian nuclear deal, Rivet assumed that Europe is “completely naked” and “cannot do anything to save” the agreement.

“No European company would ever dare antagonize the American government about the sanctions on Iran. Europe would not really confront America on Iran. Europeans would surely lose the fight,” he said.

But there may be a possibility for Europe to take a closer look at its eastern neighbor, instead of the one across the Atlantic Ocean. “Europe is totally paralyzed when it comes to dealing with the US, except, why not, in re-opening the window of collaboration with Russia,” Rivet said.

  • In March, a Patriot missile launch didn’t go as planned in Saudi Arabia while intercepting missiles fired by Houthi forces in Yemen.
  • Author Jeffrey Lewis examined two missile attacks on Saudi Arabia and didn’t find any evidence that Saudi Arabia had intercepted missiles using Patriot missiles.
  • That raises uncomfortable questions about the United States, which seems to have sold Saudi Arabia — and its own public — a lemon of a missile defense system.

On March 25, Houthi forces in Yemen fired seven missiles at Riyadh. Saudi Arabia confirmed the launches and asserted that it successfully intercepted all seven.

This wasn’t true. It’s not just that falling debris in Riyadh killed at least one person and sent two more to the hospital. There’s no evidence that Saudi Arabia intercepted any missiles at all. And that raises uncomfortable questions not just about the Saudis, but about the United States, which seems to have sold them — and its own public — a lemon of a missile defense system.

Meghan Markle: This is why Prince Harry fiancee will not rely on Kate Middleton friendship https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-this-is-why-prince-harry-fiancee-will-not-rely-on-kate-middleton-friendship/ https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-this-is-why-prince-harry-fiancee-will-not-rely-on-kate-middleton-friendship/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 08:50:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-this-is-why-prince-harry-fiancee-will-not-rely-on-kate-middleton-friendship/

Meghan Markle, 36, the fiancee of Prince Harry, 33, lives very close to Kate Middleton, 36, at Kensington Palace in London.

Kate, who is married to Harry’s brother, Prince William, 35, and Meghan are often together, at both public appearances such as the Royal Foundation Forum and private family affairs.

But are they friends? A source close to the two women claims although there is no “animosity” between the two, they still keep some level of distance.

This is because “independent” Meghan, who is originally from Los Angeles and spent seven years living in Toronto while filming Suits, is keen to make her own “network” of friends.

“I do hear plenty to suggest that they’re quite different people and that have quite different interests,” royal expert Katie Nicholls, who wrote Harry: Life, Loss and Love, told InStyle.

“Meghan is quite independent and very confident and very keen to I think establish her own network of friends over here in London,” she continued.

However this is not to say she wants to offend Kate, but rather that she is keen to have a friendship circle of her own, added Katie.

“So that’s certainly not to say she’s snubbed Kate in any way. I think they do spend time together. But I think Meghan’s keen not to rely too much on Kate and to have her own friends as well.”

However, Katie does maintain that the pair are “friendly”, and increasingly spending more time together as time goes on.

“I think they are certainly friendly and they are spending more time with each other,” she said.

“You know they’re neighbours in Kensington Palace and I know that Meghan enjoys going over to see Kate and the children, and she does enjoy that.

I’m told there’s always an open invitation for her to be with Kate ever when she wants.”

She also hit back against rumours that the two women have any form of rift between them.

“I think that any animosity is probably a fabrication in the press. I’ve never heard to suggest that they don’t get along.”

Yesterday, it was reported that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding was threatened by a film released in the US.

The controversial film features actors playing Meghan and Harry naked in bed in a sex scene.

There’s public science in every single new drug. That was the surprising answer to a U.S. senator’s question about how government-funded research is benefitting citizens. But it took a year to come up with the numbers.

  • Stack Overflow is the go-to site for millions of programmers, giving them straightforward answers to complicated technical questions.
  • The company’s already moving fast on its next phase of growth, says CEO Joel Spolsky, selling private versions of Stack Overflow to businesses customers, including Microsoft.
  • Spolsky sees Stack Overflow as playing a crucial role in the software boom, helping programmers navigate the ever-more-complex world of technology.

Millions of programmers rely on Stack Overflow, the question-and-answer site for the tech industry, to do their jobs. So much so, that it’s become something of an industry in-joke.

It doesn’t matter which programming language you’re using, what kind of software you’re trying to make, or where in the world you’re located. If you have a question, one of Stack Overflow’s 50 million monthly visitors likely has an answer. That’s made Stack Overflow the premiere place for programmers to socialize and discuss important issues.

Joel Spolsky, the CEO of Stack Overflow, tells Business Insider that he sees the site as “the Library of Alexandria” — an archive of the web’s collective programming knowledge. But Stack Overflow offers a lot more than programming tips. The nine-year-old company now operates a network of 170 topic-specific Q&A sites, including ones focused on travel, math, and office etiquette.

Next up for Stack Overflow: Moving into the lucrative business software market. Specifically, the company is selling private, internal-only versions of its site straight to big companies, a service it calls Stack Overflow Enterprise. The service has 14 customers so far, including Microsoft.

Recently, the company began selling a similar service for small businesses called Stack Overflow Channels. That service gives smaller teams their own roped-off Q&A sites.

Spoksly says that Stack Overflow Enterprise has been one of the easiest sales pitches of his career. He tells the story of a recent sales call with a major technology company, where he came fully prepared to state his case. Instead, once the company’s representative heard that what he was pitching was just a version of Stack Overflow for the company’s internal use, the rep was on board instantly.

“Oh yeah, we should probably have that,” the buyer told Spolsky.

Real answers, not cat GIFs

There are a few factors that make private versions of Stack Overflow that are hosted on customers’ own servers, so desirable, says Spolsky.

Among the biggest: it limits the audience who can see questions and requests for help. Asking a question to the entire public audience of Stack Overflow can be intimidating, Spolsky says. With the private service, developers are just asking for help from their peers, not random internet strangers.

“Some developers are just afraid of asking on Stack Overflow,” he says.

And limiting the audience can also mean that developers can seek and get more specific answers. A Microsoft employee can’t really ask about internal tools and procedures on an open forum. Even if the developer found someone who could help, having the exchange out in public might violate confidentiality policies.

The private enterprise service can also allow companies to build their own in-house “libraries” of knowledge. New employees can see the sum, collected wisdom of everyone who’s come before.

There are chat services (like Slack, which he calls a “beautiful product”) and internal website tools (like Atlassian Confluence) that also promise permanent archives of knowledge and discussions. But Spolsky draws some distinctions between them and his service.

Chats can be full of “cat GIFs” and cross-talk that make it hard to find answers to particular questions. And most people forget to update internal websites.

By contrast, a question-and-answer site like Stack Overflow is both intuitive and easy to search, he says. And it’s to the point — you ask a direct question on Stack Overflow, you get a direct answer.

“We don’t tolerate chit-chat,” Spolsky says.

The legacy of Stack Overflow

Spolsky sees developers’ reliance on Stack Overflow as a good thing. In the past — as Spolsky himself experienced — trying to get started as a programmer took a lot of effort. Finding the right tool for even the simplest of jobs was a matter of scouring books and magazines, writing away for trials on floppy disk, and, once you found a tool to test, hoping against hope that it actually worked.

But in recent years, there’s been an “explosion” of technologies from startups and established players that have improved the situation for developers. Programmers can more easily build into their apps the ability to take payments, thanks to Stripe, or to send texts and make phone calls, thanks to Twilio. They can also tap into AI tools from companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.

To Spolsky’s mind, it’s only something like Stack Overflow that’s allowed the current software boom to flourish. With all of these technologies around, the traditional ways of solving software problems just can’t keep up. Stack Overflow presents an ever-evolving, living record of how to solve the most present and pressing problems.

If Stack Overflow is successful, “you don’t need the books anymore,” Spolsky says. “That’s kind of a high bar, but it’s great.”

Property news: Shock number of people still rely on parents to move on from first home https://briefnews.eu/property-news-shock-number-of-people-still-rely-on-parents-to-move-on-from-first-home/ https://briefnews.eu/property-news-shock-number-of-people-still-rely-on-parents-to-move-on-from-first-home/#respond Sat, 24 Jun 2017 01:09:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/property-news-shock-number-of-people-still-rely-on-parents-to-move-on-from-first-home/

Some 32 per cent of people hoping to make the jump from their first home think they will still rely on financial help from family members or friends, according to the Lloyds Bank Second Steppers report.

While 17 per cent of second steppers plan to raise money for their next move from parents, a further 9 per cent are relying on grandparents and 6 per cent think friends will help them out financially.

Those considering turning to family members to help them out are typically looking to borrow more than £20,000, the research found.

Nearly a quarter of first-time sellers said they would have children later in life than originally planned, while 12 per cent said they would have fewer children than originally planned, while they experienced the challenges that first-time sellers face.

While over half said the challenges had made no impact on their social or personal circumstances, 13 per cent have had to, or would have to, change their career as a result.

Of those who require financial help from their parents, nearly half believe that their parents have had to make sacrifices in order to help them move up the property ladder.

Lloyds’s report found that the price difference between a typical first time buyer home and a second stepper’s ideal home, typically a detached property, was £126,000.

But, with house prices having risen strongly in some parts of the UK in recent years, would-be second steppers were sitting on an average of £105,068 of equity in their first home.

One in four second steppers surveyed thought it was now harder to move up the property ladder than to get on it in the first place.

Just over two-fifths of those surveyed had been overpaying their mortgage to increase their equity and a third had increased the amount they saved every month.

Just under a third of second steppers said not finding the right property remained the biggest issue that may delay the sale of their current property.

Lack of affordable property, the cost of stamp duty tax and potential changes to interest rates were other issues weighing heavily on second steppers’ minds as they planned their next move.

Andy Mason, mortgage director at Lloyds Bank, said: “Parental support continues to play a vital role in helping young people to get on the property ladder.

“However, it is clear that despite improved conditions for this part of the housing market, second steppers will still rely on the ‘bank of mum and dad’, with hard-pressed parents being once again called on for financial help.

“Without this extra financial support, second steppers believe that they wouldn’t be able to make the next move on the property ladder for some time.

“However, it is encouraging to see many second steppers planning ahead by overpaying their mortgage and making bigger contributions into savings accounts to prepare for when the perfect home becomes available.”

More than 500 people from across the UK who have previously bought their first home and are now looking to take their second step on the property ladder took part in the survey.

Angela Merkel Says Germany Can't Rely On The US Or The UK Anymore https://briefnews.eu/angela-merkel-says-germany-cant-rely-on-the-us-or-the-uk-anymore/ https://briefnews.eu/angela-merkel-says-germany-cant-rely-on-the-us-or-the-uk-anymore/#respond Sun, 28 May 2017 14:54:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/angela-merkel-says-germany-cant-rely-on-the-us-or-the-uk-anymore/

After attending a G-7 summit in which President Donald Trump split from other world leaders on issues of climate change, trade, and refugees, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told her country that Germany could no longer rely on the US and UK for help.

“The times in which we could completely rely on others are on the way out. I’ve experienced that in the last few days,” she said Sunday at an election rally in Southern Germany.

“We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands.”

Merkel brought up the US and the UK’s Brexit explicitly, saying that she hopes to maintain a friendly relationship with the two countries, but that she has come to understand that they are no longer countries to lean on.

At the G7, British Prime Minister Theresa May joined Trump in pushing for explicitly reaffirming countries’ sovereign right to controlling borders and limiting migration levels.

However, Trump was alone on the issue of climate change, and has signaled he may pull out of the Paris Agreement.

Merkel added that she hopes Germany’s relationship with France will strengthen and flourish under new French President Emmanuel Macron, who is staunchly pro-European.
