Volunteers mingle outside of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Two planes of migrants from Venezuela arrived suddenly Wednesday night on Martha's Vineyard.

  • Florida Gov. Desantis flew 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.
  • The migrants told NPR that they were under the impression they were going to Boston for work.
  • Advocates have compared the tactic to the 1960s "Reverse Freedom Rides.

The tactics used by Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis to relocate 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard last week resemble tactics used by southern segregationists during the 1960s "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported.

In a tweet, Representatives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library also recounted the 1960s segregationalist effort.

"To embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people, southern White Citizens' Councils started their so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides," giving Black people one-way tickets to northern cities with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives," the library said.

On Wednesday, 50 migrants arrived in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts without any warning. DeSantis claimed responsibility for the two flights. The migrants were flown from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of an effort by Republican governors to protest the Biden administration's immigration policies.

DeSantis was following in the footsteps of several other GOP governors who in recent weeks have been sending migrants to liberal cities. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has bused about 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City, in protest of  Biden's immigration policies.

NPR reported that the migrants thought they were headed to Boston for jobs. Three migrants told the outlets that a woman identified as "Perla" promised them expedited work permits in Boston.

"She (Perla) offered us help. Help that never arrived," one migrant, named by the outlet as Andres, told NPR. "Now we are here. We got on the plane with a vision of the future, of making it."

In 1962, the segregationist group called the White Citizens' Council falsely promised hundreds of Black Americans housing and jobs before sending them to cities like New York and Philadelphia in an effort called the "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported.

"Reverse Freedom Rides are not well known among many people, and it's important to understand that this tactic of using people as political pawns was used 60 years ago by segregationists and White supremacists," Tanisha Sullivan, president of the NAACP Boston branch told CNN.

"It's important for us to amplify and highlight that parallel, so people can see that this type of racist behavior and these racist tactics are still being used today," she added.

How To Have A Smooth Move During Your Relocation https://briefnews.eu/how-to-have-a-smooth-move-during-your-relocation/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-have-a-smooth-move-during-your-relocation/#respond Tue, 02 Apr 2019 12:48:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/?p=251548 You may be planning to move to a new place a few months from now. Whether it’s an apartment or a house, you need to do a lot of planning and organization to get everything ready for the transition.

If you’re looking to have the smoothest possible relocation for you and your family, here are a few tips to consider from the very beginning.

  1. Schedule move as early as you can

It can be hard to hire a moving company especially if you plan to relocate at a peak time of the year. That’s the reason why getting an earlier booking is the right thing to do when moving. Remember, the process of looking for movers near me is challenging.

From requesting an estimate to checking on license and insurance details, you need to consider a lot of things before seeking help from professionals. To make sure you have them on your moving day, start making your calls now and schedule your relocation with them as early as you can.

  1. Create a budget

Of course, moving to a new place requires you to shell out money for the potential expenses. Without a budget in place, you may not be able to execute your move in an efficient and orderly manner. Hence, it’s important to set a budget and stick with it throughout the process. By doing this, it’ll be much easier and faster for you to complete tasks before the big day.

  1. Dispose of unwanted items

Having a smooth move also means getting rid of unnecessary items. Not only that but moving in itself can be the best time to determine which of your unwanted things should be taken with you and which should be left behind.

Moreover, another good thing about decluttering is that it allows you to save money on possible weight charges for your shipment. If you don’t want to move unnecessary things and pay for something you don’t intend to bring, start cutting down your possessions until your move.

  1. Get your things packed properly

Always bear in mind that packing isn’t an easy task to do. It’s, therefore, essential to start the process early to avoid things being done in a hurry. Also, packing up all your belongings as soon as you can is less stressful than doing everything at once the night before the moving day. First in the procedure is that you need to stock up some boxes and other packing supplies. Make sure to double your supplies so you’ll not run back and forth to the store to buy them.

Once you have your materials ready, go room by room and begin packing items that you don’t use on a regular basis to be followed by the essential ones. Then, don’t forget to label each box by being specific about the description of the contents inside it. When it comes to valuables such as jewelry, computers, and other essential paperwork, keep them with you throughout the relocation to ensure they’ll not be misplaced.

  1. Be organized

Being organized can contribute to your relocation’s success. When it comes to having a smooth process during the move, start by keeping all your boxes in one central location. That way, you’re giving the movers an opportunity to work as quickly as they can. Second, be sure all your boxes are labeled accordingly so they’ll have an idea which rooms these things should go. Lastly, disassemble your beds, couches, dressers, and desks to save both time and energy. If you don’t have the ability and tools, you can ask your movers for help.

  1. Settle utilities ahead of time

You may be so much preoccupied with moving out that you almost forget about the things you need to do once you move in. Also, you don’t want to find yourself in a situation where there’s no electricity, water, and other utilities once you arrive at your new place. To avoid this kind of complication, call the utility service providers as early as possible to schedule the setup of your utilities. By doing it, you get these things turned on as you’ve moved in. Also, find time to disconnect the services in your old address to avoid getting stuck with utility bills provided after moving out.

Conclusion

Whether you’re moving a few blocks away or across the country, you always look forward to moving to your new place smoothly and safely. With these tips in mind, you’ll be fully prepared when the moving day arrives. If you decide to move to New York City, start planning your relocation now and hire moving companies NYC to keep your sanity throughout this busy time.

British diplomats to use US Embassy in Jerusalem despite opposing relocation – report https://briefnews.eu/british-diplomats-to-use-us-embassy-in-jerusalem-despite-opposing-relocation-report/ https://briefnews.eu/british-diplomats-to-use-us-embassy-in-jerusalem-despite-opposing-relocation-report/#respond Wed, 23 May 2018 02:35:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/british-diplomats-to-use-us-embassy-in-jerusalem-despite-opposing-relocation-report/ The UK diplomats in Israel will do their business with Americans through the newly-inaugurated embassy in Jerusalem, a UK minister reportedly said. The UK snubbed the grand opening, voicing criticism over the move.

While being the US’ closest European ally, Britain joined the international community in boycotting the unveiling ceremony of the US Embassy in Jerusalem last week, which spurred violent clashes between Palestinian protesters and the Israeli army at the Gaza border. At least 60 people were killed in the altercation, including a baby that reportedly choked to death from tear gas, the Gaza Health Ministry said.

The protests, which left over 2,000 people injured, became the deadliest day in Gaza since 2014. The UK sided with the international outcry, calling on the Israeli forces to show restraint in quelling the unrest while denouncing the US decision. “We continue to believe that is playing the wrong card at the wrong time,” UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said at the time.

However, it has now been revealed that what was seen as the UK’s bid to defy its main ally may have been short-lived. A mere three days later, UK Middle East Minister Alistair Burt reportedly told members of the British Palestinian Policy Council that the UK is not ready to go as far as to refuse visits to the US embassy altogether.

“When we asked him to confirm [that] UK officials would not attend meetings at the embassy going forward, as the UK does not recognize it, he was very clear that they would attend,” a source who was present at the meeting with Burt told the Middle East Eye.

Apart from the US, only two other countries, Guatemala and Paraguay, followed the US’ lead and moved their embassies to Jerusalem, which Israel considers to be its “united and undivided” capital, a notion that has found no support from the international community. As with the majority of the countries, the UK backs the two-state solution in which Jerusalem is envisaged as a shared capital of the states of Israel and Palestine.

A pro-Palestinian protest in Istanbul on Monday.

Controversy over the UK’s plans to allow its diplomats to visit the US Embassy in Jerusalem is another ambiguous signal from London over the recent developments in the Palestinian-Israeli standoff. On Friday, the UK abstained from a UN Human Rights Council vote to launch a war crimes probe into the brutal crackdown on Palestinian protesters by Israel. Only two countries, the US and Australia, voted against the resolution. The decision was slammed by shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry,  Labour Party, who said she was “disgusted” that the UK government did not support the independent investigation.

The way Britain went from standing up to the US to pandering to US President Donald Trump in just a few days screams of hypocrisy, Peter Ford, former UK ambassador to Syria, said. He rejected the argument that by maintaining contacts with the US Embassy in Jerusalem, the UK can have better leverage with Washington.

“I would personally totally reject that. I think it’s laughable, the idea that British diplomats in Tel Aviv by trotting up to meet American diplomats in Jerusalem can have any influence over that embassy which is in the stewardship of the American ambassador, who is very extreme, is laughable,” Ford said.

The former diplomat argued that things would be very different had it not been the US that moved its embassy, but Russia.

“Would the British position be to continue doing business with it? No way. There would have been horrified exclamations, legal arguments would have been found to justify Britain’s position of having nothing to do with this Russian embassy. It’s double standards.”

The UK’s inability to back up its words with deeds further emboldens Trump and sets a dangerous precedent in light of the US exit from the Iran nuclear deal, he noted.

“It’s a missed opportunity. It makes it look like Trump is able to bully his way past the Europeans and that’s a very bad precedent in the context with Iran.”

CIA & MI6 may offer Skripals new IDs, relocation to Five Eyes country – report https://briefnews.eu/cia-mi6-may-offer-skripals-new-ids-relocation-to-five-eyes-country-report/ https://briefnews.eu/cia-mi6-may-offer-skripals-new-ids-relocation-to-five-eyes-country-report/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 12:47:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cia-mi6-may-offer-skripals-new-ids-relocation-to-five-eyes-country-report/ US and British intelligence agencies may offer Sergei and Yulia Skripal new identities and relocation to a Five Eyes country, according to reports. The US is the most likely option, as they are “less likely to be killed there.”

Former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia will be offered relocation to the US or one of its allied countries under new aliases, according to Sunday Times, citing intelligence sources.

“They will be offered new identities,” a senior government official said, adding that MI6 and the CIA were discussing the issue.

High-ranked sources told the newspaper that the recovery of Sergei Skripal is “further behind” that of his daughter, and the government believes “they can both assist us with what happened soon.” Concern over the Skripals’ safety has been cited by the Sunday Times as one of the reasons for relocation.

Their lives “would likely never be the same again” because they will require “ongoing medical care;” and UK authorities maintain that they would be safer in one of the Five Eyes countries: Britain, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. “The obvious place to resettle them is in America, because they’re less likely to be killed there and it’s easier to protect them there under a new identity,” said an intelligence source familiar with the negotiations.

The source said that resettling the Skripals to a Five Eyes country was “a preference for them” because their case “would have huge security implications.”

Sergei Skripal is former double agent. He worked for several years for the GRU, the Russian army’s intelligence agency, until 1999 when he retired due to poor health, according to public sources. Following a career in the Russian Foreign Ministry, Skripal was arrested in 2004 for having cooperated with the British secret services since 1995. The former GRU officer was stripped of his rank and decorations, tried for high treason, and imprisoned for 13 years in 2006.

In 2010, he was released and pardoned by then-president Dmitry Medvedev as part of a deal in which Skripal, along with three other Russian nationals imprisoned for espionage, was swapped for 10 Russian intelligence agents captured in the US. Shortly after the spy swap, Skripal relocated to the UK and settled in Salisbury.

On March 20, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Skripal was clearly not of any interest to Russia after the 2010 spy swap. “He was handed to Britain as a result of an exchange. So, why should Russia hand in a man that is of any importance or that is of any value? It’s unimaginable,” the official said. He added: “If he’s handed in – so Russia quits with him. He’s of zero value or zero importance.”

Guatemala announces relocation of its embassy to Jerusalem https://briefnews.eu/guatemala-announces-relocation-of-its-embassy-to-jerusalem/ https://briefnews.eu/guatemala-announces-relocation-of-its-embassy-to-jerusalem/#respond Mon, 25 Dec 2017 00:05:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/guatemala-announces-relocation-of-its-embassy-to-jerusalem/

Despite the furore over Washington’s controversial decision to recognize the sacred city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Guatemala has decided to follow suit, announcing plans to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv.

Following a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Sunday, the President of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, announced his decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem.

“We talked about the excellent relations we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the State of Israel,” the president said in a Facebook post, stressing that one of the most relevant issues “was the return of the Guatemalan Embassy to Jerusalem.”

“I inform you that I have given instructions to the Chancellor to initiate the respective coordination” to move the embassy, Morales said in his brief post, without stating whether or not the country recognizes Jerusalem as the state capital.

The Central American country was one of just nine states to support the US decision during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) vote this week. On Thursday, the UNGA overwhelmingly passed a non-binding resolution condemning Donald Trump’s declaration to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and called on member states not to move their diplomatic missions to the Holy City. The non-binding UNGA resolution was backed by 128 states, while 35 countries abstained. Guatemala, Honduras, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Togo, the US and Israel voted in favor of the US decision. The UNGA vote followed the US veto of a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution Monday. All other UNSC members voted in favor of a motion to rescind Donald Trump’s move.

“We are absolutely certain that it is the right route,” Morales said earlier this week of Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem, adding, that Israel is an “ally of Guatemala and we must support it.”

Tel Aviv has been urging other countries to follow America’s example to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. On Friday, Netanyahu said a number of countries are “seriously considering” moving their embassies to Jerusalem. While the Israeli PM did not name the countries contemplating such a move, he did reveal that Israel is now engaged in a concerted diplomatic campaign to muster support for Israel.

Despite repeated warnings by global and regional powers, Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel on December 6, triggering a strong backlash and widespread condemnation. Following the announcement, massive anti-Israeli and anti-American rallies erupted across the region.

The most intense clashes are playing out in Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza, as Palestinians rally angrily against the decision and Hamas urging a new intifada (uprising). The Israeli crackdown on protesters has been brutal. Over 10 people have been killed and hundreds of others injured as Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons to suppress demonstrators.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce official US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Wednesday, according to various reports citing US and White House officials. The US embassy, however, will not be relocated immediately.

The US embassy move from Tel Aviv would be a symbolic and substantive shift in US policy on the Israel-Palestine question. While the US ostensibly supports a two-state solution, it could be extremely detrimental to any peace deal, as Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the rightful capital for their own future statehood.

Sources close to the White House told ABC News and the Associated Press that recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital will not be a political statement. Part of Jerusalem could still potentially be a capital for a Palestinian state, ABC News reported.

Congressman Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who chairs the subcommittee on National Security for the US House Oversight Committee, arrived Saturday and plans to hold meetings with Israeli politicians and the country’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a statement from Likud MK Yehuda Glick said.

The US team plans to “closely examine the issue of transferring the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – both from a practical standpoint as well as politically,” Glick wrote, according to i24 News.

“The delegation is in Jerusalem to learn firsthand what it will mean to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” Ruth Lieberman, a friend of DeSantis and a political advisor in Israel, told Jerusalem Post.

“Its leadership intends to return to Congress with a report and a deeper understanding of what to expect, and of some of the decisions that have to be made as well,” Lieberman added.

The delegation is reportedly scheduled to convene a news conference in Jerusalem on Sunday before leaving the country.

Speculation of the possible relocation of the US embassy has been widely condemned by the Palestinians who regard Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. Israel, however, proclaims the entire city as its historic capital.

The “US Congress should understand that moving the US embassy to Jerusalem will explode the situation in the Mena region (Middle East and North Africa,” Fatah spokesperson Ziad Khalil Abu Zayyad said, according to Jerusalem Post.

“This same team should consult with its military and political consultants in the (US) State Department that stated several times in the past that (such) actions put American interests and presence in the region in danger,” Abu Zayyad added.

Donald Trump pledged to recognize Jerusalem as the “undivided capital” of Israel if elected president. During his meeting with Netanyahu last month, he told the Israeli Prime Minister that the US was “looking with great care” at relocating the embassy to Jerusalem.

The US embassy is currently located in Israel’s capital of Tel Aviv. Israel declared Jerusalem as its capital in 1950, although it’s not formally recognized by the international community, who maintain foreign embassies in Tel Aviv.
