The most reliable and dependable cars in the UK in 2018 have been revealed.
As part of the 2018 What Car? Reliability Survey thousands of motorists were surveyed about their vehicle to determine its reliability and whether or not they had experienced problems with it.
A total of 31 different car brands and 159 models were considered in the survey of 18,284 car owners in the UK.
It looked at what problems, if any, motorists had experienced with their motor, and focused on drivers who had owned their vehicle between one and four years.
Unsurprisingly, a Japanese car tops the list for reliability.
In fact, two Japanese cars share the crown as the most reliable on the roads in Britain – Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Sx4 S-Cross.
Japanese cars are renowned for their safety and that’s why four of the top five all originated from there, with the Nissan Leaf and Toyota RAV4 taking the 3rd and 4th spots respectively.
Most outstandingly the Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Sx4 S-Cross both were given a 100 per cent reliability rating.
Most reliable cars in the What Car? Reliability Survey 2018:
=1. Toyota Yaris (2011 – Present)
Reliability Ranking – 100.0 per cent
=1. Suzuki Sx4 S-Cross (2013 – Present)
Reliability Ranking – 100.0 per cent
3. Nissan Leaf (2011 – 2017)
Reliability Ranking- 99.7 per cent
4. Toyota RAV 4X4 (2013 – 2018)
Reliability Ranking – 99.6 per cent
5. BMW 3 Series (2005 – 2014)
Reliability Ranking – 99.5 per cent
According to the report, 30 per cent of the 18,284 survey respondents with cars less than four years old said their car had suffered at least one fault in the past 12 months.
The What Car? Reliability Survey 2018 reveals ratings for 159 models spanning 31 brands. Overall, around 30% of the 18,284 survey respondents with cars less than four years old said their car had suffered at least one fault in the past 12 months.
Steve Huntingford, editor of What Car?, said: “Reliability is a huge consideration for any prospective car buyer, as your car is likely to be your second biggest monthly expense after mortgage or rent payments.
“You want your car to last and you don’t want to have to fork out huge amounts to fix faults and keep it running.
“Our annual survey has shown that it is Japanese models that continue to dominate the top of the reliability rankings, both for car model and brand rankings.”
The least reliable cars were also unveiled in the report.
Topping that list was the Tesla Model S which landed a reliability score of 50.7 per cent.
Speaking on RT’s SophieCo show with Sophie Shevardnadze, Jean-Pierre Raffarin said that Trump’s “disagreeable” decision to unilaterally pull-out of the 2015 Iran deal –known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – has fueled EU leaders’ concerns about Washington’s reliability as a leading economic and security partner.
The former prime minister insisted that, despite Washington’s attempts to throw the landmark JCPOA agreement off-balance, the bloc would not give up on its hopes to salvage the deal. France will continue negotiations with “the great powers committed to this position” – namely Russia, China and Germany, he promised.
Pointing out that French companies were being penalized by Washington’s decision to quit the Iran nuclear deal and impose fresh sanctions on Tehran, Raffarin warned that transatlantic relations between France and the United States faced “huge issues.” He also noted other manifestations of Donald Trump’s “unilateralism,” including the US president’s opposition to the Paris climate accord, and his controversial decision to relocate the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
Asked to assess how damaging these developments have been to Europe’s relationship with Washington, Raffarin speculated that the EU will look eastward if its transatlantic partnership with the United States continues to deteriorate. He added that he was far from the only Frenchman advocating warmer relations with Russia.
Raffarin applauded President Emmanuel Macron’s willingness to engage with Moscow, noting that Russia’s input and participation was necessary to achieve regional and global security.
He said that there was a need for a Euro-Asian coalition consisting of France, Germany, Russia and China, to ensure “worldwide stability.”

Samsung has hinted that the Galaxy S9 might include more advanced face recognition, but we’re now getting clues as to what’s involved. SamCentral‘s sleuthing in the settings APK for the Galaxy Note 8’s Oreo beta has discovered a hidden Intelligent Scan feature that uses both camera-based face detection and the iris scanner in tandem for “better accuracy and security” and improved results in “low or very bright” lighting. Given that the iris scanning on the S8 and Note 8 can be finnicky, this could deliver a much more consistent experience when you’re unlocking your phone or accessing secure info.
Just how it works isn’t immediately apparent. A video included with the feature suggests that both the iris scanner and camera are active at the same time regardless of the conditions, but it’s not certain whether this means combining their data or using one as a backup for the other. The iris scanner might take precedence at night, for instance.
As the feature isn’t currently exposed to users, it might be introduced with the S9 when it’s launched in February. That doesn’t rule out support on older phones, to be clear — Samsung could give the feature to S8 and Note 8 users whenever their official Oreo upgrade arrives. The question is whether or not they’ll get the same level of face recognition-based features. The Exynos 9810 chip headed to the S9 (and possibly the Snapdragon 845) enables iPhone X-style 3D face detection and a secure biometric processing unit, so you might need an S9 to use your face for payments or other features that depend on stricter security.

Buying a new car can be extremely exciting and daunting at the same time.
You want to make sure that whatever car you invest in will be a reliable workhouse that doesn’t spend every weekend in a garage big fixed.
An exclusive survey by Consumer Reports has revealed the vehicles which are the most reliable
The reliability factor was measured in a response to the cars that were most often reported to reach over 200,000 miles driven.
Consumer Report did however state that given the long span of years for the analysis, road-test score, reliability and other factors are subject to vary over time.
1. Toyota Camry
2. Honda Accord
3. Toyota Prius
4. Honda CR-V
5. Toyota Sienna
6. Honda Civic
7. Toyota Corolla
8. Toyota 4Runner
9. Toyota Highlander
10. Ford F-150
Toyota dominated the list with six entries in the top ten and Honda cars also faired favourable with three entries.
One thing to bear in mind is Consumer Report is an US based company, so some of these cars may not be available in the UK.
Earlier this year Auto Express revealed their list for the UK’s most reliable cars based on their annual driver survey.
Here are a list of the top 10 most reliable cars in the UK according to research by Driver Power:
1. Toyota RAV4
2. Skoda Yeti
3. Audi Q3
4. SEAT Leon
5. Lexus RX
6. Kia Cee’d
7. Lexus CT
8. Suzuki Vitara
9. Lexus NX
10. Volvo XC60
In 2016, there were almost 2.7million cars registered in the UK which was a new record.
This means that over 300,000 new cars could have already needed repairs and developed faults.
Shockingly a third of drivers confessed that their car had failed in the first year.

An elderly woman is crying profusely over the phone, and all anyone can do is listen and try to console her. Through no fault of her own, she’s now beside herself with a $ 7000 repair estimate for a car that has become a 3500-pound paperweight. The only thing she knows about cars is how to drive one. Guess who was responsible for this tragic scene? The guy writing this article.
–
That’s right. I was guilty—not by intent, but by association and anecdotal experience. Guess who recommended to her that she buy that car? Yep, that was me. I bought a reliable version of the same model—a car that’s still on the road with 350,000-plus miles on the odometer—more than 20 years ago. In fact, my evangelizing about the reliability of that daily driver, a 1994 Toyota Camry coupe, eventually led my family to buy four more Camrys. Between 1994 and 2012, those were the only cars bought by my parents and brothers. I drank the industry Kool-Aid that makes many of us believe that, out of that ocean of millions of cars, only a few chosen models can offer you true long-term reliability.
–
That’s no longer true. Soon after that woman on the phone (my mom) was given that jaw-dropping estimate, I decided to do two things. First, I replaced a sensor and told the dealer where he could stick that estimate. And second, I became involved with a project called the Long-Term Quality Index (LTQI), a four-year-old, collaborative effort that studies the reliability of used cars. The study now includes data on more than 1.4 million vehicles that have been independently inspected by certified mechanics. When it comes to used-car shopping, this is a smidgen of what has been found so far:
–

Sports Cars Often Are the Most Reliable Cars
–
Let us give you an example that hit us right between the eyes. The Toyota Camry has long been hailed as reliability incarnate, along with the Honda Accord, the Toyota Corolla, and the Honda Civic. We at the Long-Term Quality Index expected those models to be right at the top.
–
But guess which older, used vehicles outperform all of them according to LTQI data? A Ford Explorer? A Chevrolet Silverado? Nope, not even close. Try sports cars and roadsters such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the Chevrolet Corvette, the Mercedes SL-class, and the BMW Z3 and Z4 convertibles. As time passes, two big ingredients help these models offer one tasty recipe for long-term reliability: care-conscious owners and strong powertrains make a real difference.
–
After years and sometimes even decades, these four sports cars provide outstanding reliability because they offer the perfect combination that makes longevity a reality: attentive owners who usually install quality replacement parts, and powertrains designed to withstand demands that go beyond daily driving. (More on this point can be found here.)
–
Cars with Reliable Reputations Can Also Be Rolling Money Traps
–
A 10-year-old Camry sounds like a great idea until you find out about frequent engine issues and melting dashboards. LTQI data shows that a Camrys of that vintage are just middle-of-the-pack, not leaders. And another similarly well-regarded vehicle, the Honda Accord, has good years and bad years thanks to chronic transmission issues that apparently took several years to resolve.
–
Unpopular Cars Can Be Reliable . . . and Dirt Cheap
–
You don’t have to buy an old person’s car like a Buick Park Avenue or Lincoln Town Car to buy a car that lasts. Fun can be had along with long-term quality if you spread your search to the unpopular cars. Volkswagen is a damaged brand at the moment, and many of its powertrains aren’t a good deal. But if you stick with a manual transmission, and an engine that doesn’t have a turbocharger or direct injection, you may be able to get a quality vehicle at a discount thanks to all the bad publicity these days.

And Unloved Badge-Engineered Siblings Are Even Better

Have you ever heard of a Suzuki Equator? It’s a version of the mid-size Nissan Frontier truck with different badging that nobody ever shops for because Suzuki hasn’t sold new cars in the United States since 2012. This lack of advertising makes the Equator thousands of dollars cheaper than the Frontier while offering the same level of quality. The Equator also came with a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, unlike the Frontier. That same lack of new-car advertising made the Pontiac Vibe compact cheaper than its genetically identical clone, the Toyota Corolla Matrix.

The Toyota Camry was the right decision for my family, until it wasn’t. Quality can change over time. So choose a smart path. Invest time in questioning the owner. Make condition your priority, and don’t talk yourself out of buying a car that’s fast and fun. Sometimes the best deals are exactly where you wouldn’t expect to find them.

Certain cars are reliability incarnate. Toyota Corolla. Honda Civic. BMW Z4 (pictured above)—wait, BMW Z4? Yes, because the long-term reliability of sports cars has experienced a paradigm shift over the past 25 years, thanks in part to automakers’ improvements in quality and reaching economies of scale with these products.
–
Sports cars typically are driven far less than most other types of used cars, too. According to data from this author’s own Long-Term Quality Index, which has recorded the mileage and condition of more than 1.4 million trade-ins from Connecticut to California, this low-mileage reality is as true for a Mazda MX-5 as it is for a Chevrolet Corvette or even a Mercedes CLK-class.
–
At the same time, owners usually invest more money into sports cars when it comes to regular maintenance. You’re far less likely to find any of these vehicles being given a paper-based oil filter at a 10-minute oil-change shop or fitted with low-quality tires that can accelerate the suspension’s deterioration. Today’s sports-car owners often are older, wiser, and more willing to invest. The result? A 15-year-old sports car in excellent shape is no longer uncommon.
–

–
–
In fact, when it comes to long-term quality, it’s the fast and the fun that often provide the best bang for the buck. This is true even for sports cars with the same engine foundations and transmissions that are installed in full-size SUVs. The owner gets the benefit of an engine and transmission engineered to handle the stress of super-size-vehicle duties. Often, those engines and transmissions can be made (with variations specific to the application) to withstand nearly twice the vehicle weight and far more towing and hauling than any sports car. Purchasers gets the benefit of that extreme testing standard and lack of heft when they buy the sports-car version.
–
Radu Theyyunni, director of engine analysis at GM Global Propulsion Systems, commented on this merging of multiple standards and its impact on powertrain longevity and reliability in sports cars and other vehicles that offer a higher level of horsepower and torque.
–

–
“A sports car has a much different duty cycle than a full-size SUV,” Theyyunni said. “For example, the lubrication and cooling systems can be different. However, the base engine design, such as the main bearings, the block, and the crank, are all designed [to be] robust enough to handle both types of applications.” That means engines for trucks can handle steep grades and heavy towing loads, while engines in sports cars are optimized for performance-related activities, he said.
–
Sometimes even the most unreliable sports-car brands of the distant past can eventually become enduring testaments to long-term quality. Take Jaguar, for instance. The long-term reliability of that automaker’s engines has gone from the atrocious nadir of the Jaguar XJS of a quarter-century ago to the pinnacle of reliability with the well-crafted, modern engines found in the Jaguar XK.
–

–
Modern versions of Jaguar engines serve as the foundation for a wide variety of vehicles in today’s used-car market, ranging from Lincoln luxury cars to Land Rover SUVs to Ford Thunderbirds. In today’s world, that decade-old used Jaguar can already handle nearly twice the power of the old V-12 while experiencing an infinitesimal fraction of the powertrain issues.
–
Nearly 80 percent of the sports cars, roadsters, and grand tourers that have been sold in the United States since 1993 have above-average reliability, according to the Long-Term Reliability Index. That’s a record that no other segment of today’s market can match.
–
–
–
–
–
It’s a quiet reality within the used-car market: Modern sports cars usually are driven less, maintained better, and designed to handle far more abuse than their automotive ancestors. So if you want a used car that’s worth keeping, don’t be afraid to skip past the practical and dial up the horsepower.

“I would like to thank both the military personnel and the designers and developers of one of our latest missile systems, Kh-101,” Putin said at a Meeting of the Commission for Military Technical Cooperation with Foreign State.
“This missile system has proved highly reliable. It is indeed the most advanced weapon with high precision and capacity, and a range of 4,500 km, which is quite good,” he added, urging defense companies to step up production of modern weapons.
Noting the growing demand for Russian weapons given their effectiveness in Syria, Putin stressed that the proliferation of military technology should in no way impact negatively on the strategic balance of power in regions where the weaponry is sold to. Instead of fueling conflict, the Russian leader emphasized, weapons should be used to prevent them.
“All our decisions on supplies of arms to external markets are based on the current international situation in various regions – in order to prevent any imbalances and to avoid an escalation of conflicts. On the contrary, our weapons must be used to contain conflicts at the early stages,” Putin underlined.
The president urged experts to analyze the Syrian war experience and to continue upgrade existing weapons systems while simultaneously developing “new and advanced combat hardware.”
Putin also pointed out that the demand for “qualified military specialists” is on the rise.
“In this context, the training of military personnel, teaching them to operate Russian weapons and equipment, and building up the export of military services, should remain a major component of the military technical cooperation system,” the Russian leader said.
The Kh-101 missile, created by Raduga (Rainbow) Design Bureau, was first battle-tested in Syria in 2015, but the Russian military once again demonstrated its effectiveness on Wednesday, when Tu-95MS strategic bombers fired the missiles on Islamic State targets in Hama and Homs provinces.
Noting the potency of the new missiles with stealth radar-evading features, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday’s precision strikes were carried out “from a distance of about 1,000 kilometers.”
The Kh-101 carries a non-nuclear warhead of up 400 kg, while the Kh-102 modification can be armed with a 250 kiloton nuke. The missile can fly at an altitude of up to 10,000 meters, with an effective range of 5,500 meters, according to various estimates.
One of the advantages of the missile which entered service in 2013, is that it can be carried by a wide range of aircraft. The supersonic strategic bomber Tu-160 can be loaded with up to twelve missiles, while Tu-95MS can carry eight warheads. The Tu-22 can pack four missiles, while Su-34 bombers can hold two.
