Championship table predicted: Play-off and relegation spots revealed – Fulham pip Cardiff https://briefnews.eu/championship-table-predicted-play-off-and-relegation-spots-revealed-fulham-pip-cardiff/ https://briefnews.eu/championship-table-predicted-play-off-and-relegation-spots-revealed-fulham-pip-cardiff/#respond Fri, 06 Apr 2018 21:04:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/championship-table-predicted-play-off-and-relegation-spots-revealed-fulham-pip-cardiff/

Cardiff City blew a huge chance to cement their automatic promotion spot on Friday night, missing two late penalties during their 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Neil Warnock’s side would have taken a giant step back towards the Premier League with a win at the Cardiff City Stadium, but both Gary Madine and Junior Hoillet fluffed their lines.

The result keeps Fulham’s hopes of automatic promotion alive, while Wolves are edging closer to the Championship title.

At the other end of the table, there is still everything to play for with a host of teams in danger of dropping down into League One.

The stats geeks at Football Web Pages have done some calculations and worked out the most likely result of every fixture between now and the end of the season – so how will the final standings look?

Take a look through the gallery above to see the predicted Championship table at the end of the 2017/18 season, and find out where your team will finish.

Middlesex and Somerset sweating on relegation decision from ECB https://briefnews.eu/middlesex-and-somerset-sweating-on-relegation-decision-from-ecb/ https://briefnews.eu/middlesex-and-somerset-sweating-on-relegation-decision-from-ecb/#respond Wed, 11 Oct 2017 17:37:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/middlesex-and-somerset-sweating-on-relegation-decision-from-ecb/

The ECB confirmed yesterday that Middlesex’s appeal against a two-points penalty for a slow over-rate in the match abandoned when a crossbow bolt was fired onto the field of play at The Oval in August is being considered.

And with Somerset pipping Middlesex to safety by one point in the final match of the season, relegation and survival will be settled in the post-season for the second year running.

Middlesex chief executive Richard Goatley confirmed the club had been initially told they had no route to appeal the penalty despite the abandonment dictating they had no time to make up their over-rate.

But a sympathetic hearing from ECB chairman Colin Graves encouraged them to lodge a fresh submission which has been passed on to Tim O’Gorman, chair of the CDC.

O’Gorman, who has already got his hands full with the Ben Stokes incident, is expected to deliver a verdict early next week.

Goatley said he was confident the commission would be “competent enough to reach the right decision”.

Should Middlesex be reprieved and Somerset relegated in their place it would be the second year running the ECB not the final table have dictated the winners and losers.

Last year Hampshire were reprieved despite finishing second to bottom after Durham, a place above them in the table, were penalised with relegation after accepting a £3.8million financial bailout.

Chelsea 3 – Middlesbrough 0: Blues can win title on Friday as Boro suffer relegation https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-3-middlesbrough-0-blues-can-win-title-on-friday-as-boro-suffer-relegation/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-3-middlesbrough-0-blues-can-win-title-on-friday-as-boro-suffer-relegation/#respond Mon, 08 May 2017 23:27:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-3-middlesbrough-0-blues-can-win-title-on-friday-as-boro-suffer-relegation/

Chelsea stand just one win from their sixth league title this morning after as comprehensive a victory as they have managed all season.

That title – their second in three seasons – will come at the Hawthorns on Friday night if they beat West Brom.

But it was that wily old campaigner Fabregas, starting only his 11th league game all season, who carried them brilliantly through this nervous last stage of a gruelling campaign. The Spaniard, in majestic form all night, set up goals for Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic, with Marcos Alonso netting one in between.

Poor old Middlesbrough’s last gasp of Premier League life disappeared after just one season as they went down with Sunderland after this result – going out with a whimper.

Plans to ‘park the bus’ from Boro got off to the worst possible start last night. The team bus  bumped into a people carrier on the Fulham Road, delaying their arrival at Stamford Bridge.

A blow for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte before the game came with the news that new FWA Player of the Year N’Golo Kante had failed to recover from a thigh injury and was ruled out, which meant Fabregas started.

Steve Agnew saw his Boro side come into the game having scored a paltry 26 goals all season, and with just one win since December 17.

Chelsea, of course, were at them straight from the start. No sympathy for any possible whiplash.

Fabregas found Alonso unmarked on the left and his volley was turned on to the underside of the bar by Boro keeper Brad Guzan, but it bounced out and away.

Another Alonso cross saw no one get a touch, and then David Luiz fired a free-kick over the bar, before Fabregas put his shot wide from ten yards.

A great challenge from George Friend stopped Costa netting from point-blank range, but the goal was coming.

And come it did  – as once again Fabregas angled a ball in from the right – a tactic Conte had obviously been working on.

This time it was Costa just onside, and the Spaniard slipped his 21st goal of the season through the hapless Guzan’s legs.

It also meant that Fabregas had become the first player  to register 10 assists in six different Premier League seasons. Boro could barely get a foot on the ball before Chelsea’s second arrived from yet another ball from the right exposing them at the far post.

This time it was Cesar Azpilicueta playing the Fabregas role and there was Alonso all alone.

Guzan could only help his 34th-minute shot in at the near post. Alonso then saw his free-kick deflected just over the bar as Chelsea dominated. Boro had barely had time to consult their insurance documents.

The second half had barely started before Pedro found himself free and clipped the bar with his drive. Then Azpilicueta fired one just over.

Alonso’s cross-shot somehow stayed put once again, but the amount of room the Chelsea wing-back was getting on that flank spelled further problems for Boro.

Gary Cahill saw his piledriver kept out by an overworked Guzan, and then the centre- back put his header just wide.

The third came as once again a horribly overworked Boro defence failed to clear. Fabregas, once again the man in the right place, dinked a lovely little cross with his right foot and Matic controlled on his chest, swivelled and fired under Guzan.

Had there been any hope for Agnew’s side, who had not had a shot until then, that was the moment it was well and truly snuffed out.

In truth, it had been over the moment the first goal went in. The Championship, which they struggled so hard to get out of for seven long years, will see them back again next season.

SUNDERLAND v BOURNEMOUTH

Analysis from our reporter Ian Murtagh, at the Stadium of Light.

Welcome to the Stadium of Plight where Sunderland have not won in 2017. They’re facing a Bournemouth side without a league win on their travels this calendar year. Should be a cracker, eh?

This is the day the Black Cats’ ten year residency in the Premier League comes to an end. If Hull, who are at Southampton, better the Black Cats’ result this afternoon, the trapdoor will open.

Whatever the outcome today, no-one seriously thinks Sunderland can survive. Victory would merely delay the inevitable.

David Moyes is without ten senior professionals with Lee Cattermole, Jason Denayer, Jack Rodwell and Darron Gibson all failing late fitness tests and Billy Jones reporting sick. That’s what happens when you’re anchored to the foot of the table.

Bournemouth make just one change from the side which thrashed Boro 4-0 last week, Lewis Cook replacing Dan Gosling.

David Moyes to lead Sunderland exodus as Black Cats face Premier League relegation https://briefnews.eu/david-moyes-to-lead-sunderland-exodus-as-black-cats-face-premier-league-relegation/ https://briefnews.eu/david-moyes-to-lead-sunderland-exodus-as-black-cats-face-premier-league-relegation/#respond Sat, 29 Apr 2017 12:39:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-moyes-to-lead-sunderland-exodus-as-black-cats-face-premier-league-relegation/

Defeat at home to will send crashing out of the Premier League if Hull pick up a point at Southampton

In the past, Moyes has always given the impression he is at the Stadium of Light for the long term but, asked if he will still be in charge in August, his answer was telling.

“I would say that I would make that decision at the end of the season,” he said.

“Because, at this moment in time, it would be the wrong time to say that.”

Ironically, Moyes is set to become the first Sunderland manager since Steve Bruce in 2011 to see out a season.

When he was appointed following Sam Allardyce’s resignation in late July to take over England, the club stressed their revolving door policy was over.

The former Everton and Manchester United boss signed a four-year contract and his job has never been under threat despite this season’s disastrous results with managing director Martin Bain desperate to bring some stability to the club.

Moyes still retains the support of his fellow Scot but clearly he has been worn down by events on and off the pitch.

Sunderland have won just five league games this term while this week he was also been charged by the FA after threatening to slap a female TV reporter.

Moyes, however, denies he’s made a sudden U-turn regarding his future plans. “It’s not a seismic change,” he said. “I just have a situation where we need to see how things are at the end of the season. It’s me saying I will then assess the situation.”

However bad it gets during the Bournemouth game and even if Sunderland go down today, Moyes will not walk away now. He said: “I’m here, I’m doing the job. My focus is to win the game – make sure I win the next game.

“At the end of the season will be the time to talk, if we are going to talk about anything.”

Moyes’ opposite number Eddie Howe has no sympathy ahead of today’s clash.

“It’s difficult to have sympathy with an opposition manager until after the game as the focus is so much on your team,” said Howe, who admitted relegation remains a threat.

“We’re not safe until it is mathematically done. We would love to get over 40 points this weekend, that is the one every one talks about, then we can move on from there.

“It’s about continuing our progression and momentum but it will be a difficult game, any away game in the Premier League is tough, so we will not be underestimating Sunderland.

“I have seen many amazing things in football, so our mentality has to be to go out against a tough side fighting for their lives.

“While there is hope for Sunderland, they will keep going, especially with their manager and the challenges he has faced in his career.”

Bournemouth avoided a third straight defeat when they thumped Middlesbrough 4-0 last weekend.

Howe hopes his team can now produce a positive end to the campaign.

“We have been slightly more inconsistent than we would have liked, but I see progression in the team and we’re going the right way,” he said.

“I’m proud of how the players have adapted to the Premier League.”

Huddersfield 22 – Catalans 29: Giants facing another battle against relegation https://briefnews.eu/huddersfield-22-catalans-29-giants-facing-another-battle-against-relegation/ https://briefnews.eu/huddersfield-22-catalans-29-giants-facing-another-battle-against-relegation/#respond Wed, 12 Apr 2017 21:47:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/huddersfield-22-catalans-29-giants-facing-another-battle-against-relegation/

Last July, the Giants sacked Paul Anderson and replaced him with Aussie Rick Stone, but not much has gone right since.

This defeat was another knife in the side of a team struggling for confidence and wobbling alarmingly.

The scoreline did not do justice to the French visitors’ superiority as the Giants scored two late consolation tries.

Stone said: “We self destructed during 20 minutes in the second half and conceded some soft tries again, which was worrying. We basically handed it to them on a platter.”

There was a first-half try for Giants debutant Jake Mamo but little else to cheer for Stone’s men, who were gradually picked apart.

Dragons boss Laurent Frayssinous, whose side won at Leigh last Friday, said: “That’s two big wins away from home in six days and I’m pretty proud of the boys.

“Hopefully people will now stop talking about Catalans as an inconsistent team.”

Huddersfield led in the 13th minute when centre Aaron Murphy scampered over in the left corner for a try which Danny Brough converted.

Catalans fashioned an impressive response which saw full-back Tony Gigot collect a short pass from Luke Walsh and weave his way through a statuesque Huddersfield defence.

Although Mamo – playing for the first time after ankle surgery during the close-season – scored five minutes before the interval, the Dragons responded again.

In the 39th minute, Richie Myler’s fine pass found centre Brayden Wiliame and he touched down to make it 12-10 to Catalans at the break.

Nine minutes after the restart, Myler crossed the line himself after collecting a kick from Walsh.

To compound Huddersfield’s problems, Brough was sinbinned for showing dissent towards referee Chris Campbell after Myler scored.

And the Dragons soon made their numerical advantage pay when Vincent Duport finished off some a flowing move in the left corner.

Walsh then ran 30 metres to score a fifth Catalans try before Jermaine McGillvary and Sam Wood replied late on for Huddersfield.

WIGAN star George Williams has signed a new four-year deal to ward off interest from several NRL clubs and make him their second marquee player after Sam Tomkins.

Leicester chiefs issue Claudio Ranieri vote of confidence despite slide towards relegation https://briefnews.eu/leicester-chiefs-issue-claudio-ranieri-vote-of-confidence-despite-slide-towards-relegation/ https://briefnews.eu/leicester-chiefs-issue-claudio-ranieri-vote-of-confidence-despite-slide-towards-relegation/#respond Tue, 07 Feb 2017 15:57:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/leicester-chiefs-issue-claudio-ranieri-vote-of-confidence-despite-slide-towards-relegation/

Leicester fell to a fourth-straight Premier League defeat against Manchester United on Sunday, leading to speculation Ranieri’s time at the Foxes could be up.

The 3-0 loss at the King Power Stadium saw 18th-placed Foxes move dangerously close to the relegation zone, with Hull now just one point behind.

But Leicester insist they have no plans to sack Ranieri, who guided the Foxes to the Premier League title last season.

Ranieri’s side face Swansea on Sunday after tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth-round replay with Derby.

And the trip to the Liberty Stadium could prove vital with Paul Clement’s men sitting one place behind only on goal difference.

A club statement read: “In light of recent speculation, Leicester City Football Club would like to make absolutely clear its unwavering support for its first team manager, Claudio Ranieri.

“While there is a collective appreciation from everyone at the club that recent form needs to improve, the unprecedented success achieved in recent seasons has been based firmly on stability, togetherness and determination to overcome even the greatest of challenges.

“The entire club is and will remain united behind its manager and behind its players, collectively and firmly focused on the challenges ahead.”

Ranieri understands the importance of progressing in the FA Cup and is expected to make a number of changes to his starting XI against local rivals Derby.

The Italian said: “I think (the statement) is for the media. I know the views of the chairman. Maybe he wanted to stop all the speculation. I didn’t ask them to do this – I knew what the chairman was thinking.

“Tomorrow is important because we want to go through in the cup. The FA Cup is an important achievement and we have to fight for it. I’ll make some changes.”
