1 SHAKE IT OFF

Vigorous movement can help to relax the body and get us ready for sleep as it tires out the muscles and helps relieve tension. That doesn’t mean you need to head to the gym. Try jumping up and down, dancing around your living room or running on the spot imagining you are shaking the energy out of your system.

2 TUNE IN TO THE MUSIC

Listening to the right music has the power to take away all your worries. When you’re feeling stressed, belting out your favourite song can give you an energy boost. Alternatively, classical music can be especially relaxing just before bedtime. Create a playlist of your favourite stress-busting tracks and listen to it when you feel the need.

3 SHRUG IT OFF

A quick way of relaxing your shoulder and neck muscles if you have been sitting at your desk for a long time is to shrug your shoulders. Simply raise your shoulders to your ears, then relax them down again. Repeat a few times to release tension when you feel stressed.

4 HAVE A HUG

Our worries melt away when we are in a hug. This is because your body releases the hormone oxytocin, which causes muscles to relax. It also elevates mood and alleviates stress by reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

5 THINK POSITIVE

Try to find other ways of thinking about stressful situations and talk to yourself in a positive way. For example, say to yourself: “I can handle this”, “This will all be over soon” or “I’ve faced this before and I can do it again”.

6 PUT YOUR FEET UP

The Viparita Karani yoga pose, which is suitable for beginners, involves lying on the floor and resting your legs up against the wall for a few minutes. Shuffl e your bottom as close to the wall as you can. This relaxing pose will give the body a good stretch and helps create peace of mind.

7 TAKE A QUICK WALK

When you’re feeling overwhelmed or having trouble concentrating, go for a quick stroll around the block. You’ll get the benefits of alone time and physical activity as well as a few minutes to gather your thoughts and de-stress.

8 SOOTHING SCENTS

Sprinkle a few drops of lavender, tea tree or another essential oil into your palm and inhale. These soothing scents reduce stress and anxiety by stimulating smell receptors in the nose that connect to the part of the brain that regulates emotions.

9 WRITE IT DOWN

Setting your worries down on paper can be highly cathartic. Buy a beautiful journal and write about what’s on your mind or what has been bothering you lately. If you have a stressful event coming up, putting your fears on paper can make it seem less intimidating.

10 WATCH THE CLOUDS

If you want an instant hit of relaxation, lie on the grass and spend a few moments watching the clouds drift by. Do they resemble objects, animals or people you know? This exercise can be similar to mindful meditation but you are watching the clouds go by instead of your thoughts.

11 HAVE A GOSSIP

Most of us don’t need much of an excuse for getting together with friends for a chat but research also reveals that a good gossip boosts levels of endorphins, the hormones that reduce anxiety and stress. Conversation also plays an important part in social bonding, making us feel happier and more relaxed.

12 BE CREATIVE

Creative activities such as colouring-in, crochet and origami are thought to promote relaxation. Grab some felt tips and an adult colouring book before you go to bed as part of your wind-down routine. Doing it for 20 minutes will help you drift off to sleep.

13 HAVE A GIGGLE

Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain and anxiety. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance. A good hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes.

14 ADD A PINCH OF NUTMEG

Nutmeg has been used in folk medicine for centuries to relieve anxiety and for its sleep-inducing properties. A little goes a long way so don’t overdo it. Add a pinch to a glass of warm milk or sprinkle a little on to some slices of banana before you go to bed.

15 BLOW UP A BALLOON

It might sound silly but when extreme stress hits, inflating a balloon could be a clever way of tricking your body into breathing deeply. Your body needs oxygen to relax and when under pressure you’re likely to take shorter, shallower breaths. Inflating a balloon forces you to breathe slowly and deeply and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing heart rate and relaxing your muscles.

16 GET CHEWING

If you know you’re heading into a stressful situation, try chewing a piece of gum. Studies have found chewing gum can help lower cortisol levels and help you relax. It can also keep you from snacking between meals and overeating, which is a negative effect of stress.

17 ENJOY AN OPEN FIRE

Studies have shown that watching the crackling flames and flickering light causes blood pressure to reduce and leaves us feeling more at ease. If you haven’t got an open hearth, download a video of a crackling fire as your TV or computer screensaver as this can induce a similar effect.

18 PLAY A BRAIN GAME

If you’re feeling anxious, playing a brain game that requires a certain amount of concentration can help take your mind off your worries. This is because your brain can only be actively engaged with one thing at a time. Sudoku, crossword puzzles or Scrabble are all good options.

19 SAY NO

It’s human nature to want to be obliging but don’t feel that you must take on every request or opportunity that comes your way. Saying no doesn’t mean you’re self-centred or uncaring, it protects you from overstretching yourself and can be very empowering.

20 HAVE A CUPPA

There’s nothing more comforting than a nice cup of tea. However, too much caffeine can affect sleep so if it’s after midday, switch to a brew such as chamomile, which has a calming effect or peppermint, which acts as a natural muscle relaxant.

Stressed? Landscape photography could help you relax https://briefnews.eu/stressed-landscape-photography-could-help-you-relax/ https://briefnews.eu/stressed-landscape-photography-could-help-you-relax/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 09:43:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stressed-landscape-photography-could-help-you-relax/
Graeme Green

Graeme Green

July 11, 2018

Landscape photography is more than just capturing beautiful images—it’s a way to re-connect with nature and get a little headspace in a fast-moving digital world, says Graeme Green.

“Photography is, for me, about being outside and experiencing the planet,” photographer Antony Spencer says. “It’s about experiencing places and feeling like you can still get lost in a world.”

In the digital age of smartphones and social media, where it can feel like every inch of the planet has been snapped and shared, it is still possible to get ‘lost’ and find unique locations to produce original photographs. Spencer, who won the prestigious Landscape Photographer of the Year award back in 2010, travels around the world, from Cornwall to Colorado, often guiding tours to little known corners.

Over the years, previously ‘unexplored’ areas of Norway and Iceland have, he says, started to become more popular with photographers, pushing him towards lesser known locations in Greenland, or using helicopters to access tourist-free glaciers and river deltas in Iceland. “One of the reasons I was drawn to landscapes is because I have a major fascination with the outside world,” says Spencer. “It’s also a chance to slow down in a world that is so fast-paced. The world changes all the time, perhaps not always for the better. Having a chance to slow down is more and more important.”

As well as time to contemplate, there’s the obvious benefit that exploring a landscape to photograph it requires exercise. “We’re all becoming more aware of our ‘five a day’, that we should focus more on nutrition and better health, and that we should exercise for at least 20 minutes a day,” says Waite. “Few of us are able to pursue any such regime, despite wanting to. Landscape photography can give you that little push. When I’m in the company of people who join me on our photography workshops, I feel they’re very much rewarded by the immersive experience that landscape photography can bring.”

RELATED: Is it time for travel photographers to take more responsibility?

A chance to reconnect with the natural world is also part of the appeal for Terry Gibbins. Working as a black cab driver in London, Gibbins also spends time photographing and guiding workshops in locations across the capital, such as Canary Wharf. But he also takes his camera out as often as possible to the wilds of Scotland, Northumberland and the South Downs. “I love to get out in the great outdoors,” he says. “It’s the perfect antidote to what I do. I spend so much time cooped up in this little box, driving around a big congested city. To get somewhere quiet gives you time to think and to breathe. I think we all sometimes feel the need to escape.”

Relax, ‘Mindhunter’ Has Been Renewed for a Second Season at Netflix https://briefnews.eu/relax-mindhunter-has-been-renewed-for-a-second-season-at-netflix/ https://briefnews.eu/relax-mindhunter-has-been-renewed-for-a-second-season-at-netflix/#respond Fri, 01 Dec 2017 21:03:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/relax-mindhunter-has-been-renewed-for-a-second-season-at-netflix/ We’re still recovering from Cameron Britton’s portrayal of Lurch-sized serial killer Edmund Kemper in the David Fincher and Charlize Theron-produced Mindhunter TV series that debuted on Netflix in October. The show has just been renewed for a second season, so expect to see Dr. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) dishing up some hot-shit power suit looks soon while dealing with FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), and all their dudeness.

The streaming service announced the news on their Twitter page yesterday (and reported by Variety), but have since removed the tweet. In an interview with Billboard, Fincher revealed that the second season will focus on the Atlanta Child Murders that saw 28 African-Americans killed over a two-year period, between 1979 and 1981. Wayne Williams was convicted for some of those crimes and is currently serving a life sentence in Georgia.

For those living under a rock, Mindhunter, set in the 1970s, explores the beginnings of the FBI’s criminal profiling methods. Two agents, played by Groff and McCallany, interview serial killers to tap into their special brand of fuck-up-ed-ness and what makes them tick.

Forest holidays: Relax in private and peaceful woodlands across the country https://briefnews.eu/forest-holidays-relax-in-private-and-peaceful-woodlands-across-the-country/ https://briefnews.eu/forest-holidays-relax-in-private-and-peaceful-woodlands-across-the-country/#respond Sun, 08 Oct 2017 21:25:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/forest-holidays-relax-in-private-and-peaceful-woodlands-across-the-country/

But even better than the delicious dishes and the equally tasty surroundings (deep in the wilds of Norfolk) was the knowledge that my husband and I didn’t have to fear a public meltdown from any of our young and overtired children – Luke, seven, and four-year-old twins Sam and Grace.

But that’s the beauty of Forest Holidays, a company that offers weekend breaks and longer holidays in nine private and peaceful patches of pristine woodland across the country, including Sherwood Forest and the Forest of Dean.

We opted for a three-night break in Norfolk, at the Thorpe Forest resort, the newest property in the portfolio.

Hidden along the banks of the River Thet, close to where the Norfolk and Suffolk borders meet, the forest is a delicate patchwork of pines, heathland and broadleaf trees, and home to a rich variety of native British wildlife, including deer, squirrels, pheasants, woodlarks and nightjars.

We took it all in from the plush surroundings of our stylishly designed three-bedroom glass and silver birch timber cabin and its bubbling outdoor hot tub.

The weekend was spent enjoying barbecues on the terrace and exploring the surrounding area – the Georgian market town of Southwold and the seaside gem that is Aldeburgh.

Back inland, our cabin’s hot tub proved the perfect place to sooth our weary legs after a long and hot afternoon spent riding around the resort on our hired bikes (from £15 per day).

And it wasn’t long before chef Jonathan Gardiner arrived.

Through the huge window wall that looks into the modern open-plan living room and kitchen, I saw him set about his work creating a series of culinary masterpieces.

The nine-course tasting menu began with a delicate amuse-bouche of pistachio and rose water marshmallow with a cardamom wafer which was beyond divine.

Other delicious delights that followed included scallops with spicy chorizo and grilled artichoke and cured caper with roasted monkfish tail, all in the comfort of your own temporary home from home.

Our sweet tooth was satisfied with the white and dark chocolate ginger silk mousse with honey crumb crunch and Madagascan vanilla, blueberry and buttermilk brulee with warm almond sable crisps.

Sublime to say the least, although the sweetest bit of all was probably not having a pile of dirty dishes to deal with.

Jonathan – or Johno as we called him – chatted openly about his life working in some of the best restaurants in Europe as he diligently tidied everything away.

My husband and I retired to the sitting room to enjoy a final glass of wine on the corner sofa with the huge window overlooking the sleeping forest.

Slow down and relax in style: Discover Italy’s Le Marche region https://briefnews.eu/slow-down-and-relax-in-style-discover-italys-le-marche-region/ https://briefnews.eu/slow-down-and-relax-in-style-discover-italys-le-marche-region/#respond Sat, 23 Sep 2017 07:24:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/slow-down-and-relax-in-style-discover-italys-le-marche-region/

Italy’s Le Marche region is the perfect setting for a quiet, leisurely break

Slow” is a buzzword applied to TV, food and travel as an antidote to today’s hectic lifestyle. Slowing down to enjoy a holiday, rather than exhausting yourself darting between sight-seeing destinations, is a rare pleasure, and there’s no better destination for it than Le Marche, one of Italy’s least well-known regions.

Sandwiched between the Apennines to the west and Adriatic Sea to the east, Le Marche (literally “the marches”) stretches about 100 miles down central Italy’s east coast. It’s got medieval hill towns to rival Umbria, gorgeous rolling greenery and inviting seaside enclaves equal to Tuscany, and its own imposing mountain range, the Sibillini. Yet

Le Marche remains comparatively empty of tourist traffic. That’s partly because it lacks big urban centres and the country’s important artworks and architecture. On the upside, it means there’s no obligation to cram in museum visits; instead, you have the perfect excuse for enjoying a slow-time holiday, soaking up the atmosphere.

If you do want culture, there’s plenty. The hill town of Urbino boasts a Renaissance palace and art museum, for example, and the seaside resort of Pesaro hosts an annual Rossini Opera Festival and boasts Roman and Byzantine relics in its San Terenzio cathedral.

My husband and I have visited the region almost a dozen times, drawn by its proximity to Bologna (for cheap flights), its seaside and mountains, its affordability and the slower pace of life. Through Homeaway.co.uk we found an idyllic villa just outside Cupramontana, a picturesque Le Marche hilltop town with a cobbled square and narrow pedestrian alleyways. From hidden side streets you can glimpse locals preparing fresh tortelloni through the open doors of the local trattorias.

Our villa, an old farmhouse restored with all mod cons, was the perfect base for our slow holiday. It overlooked velvety green farmland to the dramatic hills of the Gola della Rossa National Park beyond, a view of which one could never tire.

We spent afternoons by the pool watching the swallows swoop down to skim bugs off the water and deliver them to their chicks waiting overhead. We had evening barbecues of fresh fish just plucked from the Adriatic, and afterwards played card games or wandered into Cupramontana to have ice cream in the bustling square.

Like many Italian villages, it comes alive at night. Residents empty into the centre for the simple pleasures of enjoying a walk, a chat with neighbours or an early evening drink before heading home for a late dinner or to one of the many affordable local eateries.

The atmosphere is convivial and child friendly, and we found ourselves there on one of the biggest nights of the year, Night of the Verdicchio, when the population comes out to eat in the town square and celebrate and drink the region’s main product, a delicious white wine.

On other nights we tried out Cupramontana’s local eateries, eager to sample the authentic cuisine of Le Marche. Our favourite was Anita’s, an atmospheric trattoria packed with locals enjoying tortelloni with cream, tagliatelle with ragu sauce, grilled meats and mountains of vegetables, all washed down with local wine. The bill was reasonable and the evening perfect.

We were eager to enjoy the Italian beach experience – to my mind a truly civilised affair that involves renting sun loungers on a private beach that has changing rooms, a bar and restaurant. We headed to the nearest seaside town of Senigallia, an enclave whose beaches were packed with deeply bronzed Italians showing off their tans.

After swimming and sunning ourselves all morning, we headed to the promenade that’s peppered with seafood restaurants overlooking the sea – our favourite was Hostaria l’Angolino Sul Mare, a packed, open-air establishment with a seafaring theme to its decor. The kitchen served up such delicious spaghetti alle vongole (with fresh clams) that we came back for it twice.

Tempio del Valadier, a chapel at the entrance of the Frasassi Caves

To counteract our epic amounts of eating and lounging around, we decided to devote an afternoon to exploring the hills beyond our holiday villa. About 20 minutes’ drive away was the Tempio del Valadier, a small 19th-century domed chapel built in the mouth of a cave quite a way up a mountain. It’s marvellously incongruous to discover a beautiful neo-classical temple deep in the wilderness, so far from civilisation.

It was apparently built as a place of pilgrimage for sinners, and it’s fair to say they’d already punished themselves enough climbing up the mountain to reach it. We cooled off in the cave behind it before exploring a tiny medieval sanctuary on the same site, Sanctuary of Santa Maria infra Saxa, looking like something out of one of Grimms’ fairy tales.

On Sunday we mooched around the market at Apiro, another pretty hilltop village where we browsed stalls selling clothes, homeware and delicious local sausages and cheeses, before retiring to a bar. We enjoyed a day out at Cingoli lake, where some of us braved the chilly water and the rest lounged on the pebbly beach.

In other words, we took each day slowly, determined to make time to enjoy the views, food and different pace of life in this verdant corner of Italy.

Liverpool transfer news: Thompson tells fans ‘relax’ after Virgil van Dijk transfer claim https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-transfer-news-thompson-tells-fans-relax-after-virgil-van-dijk-transfer-claim/ https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-transfer-news-thompson-tells-fans-relax-after-virgil-van-dijk-transfer-claim/#respond Thu, 31 Aug 2017 19:50:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/liverpool-transfer-news-thompson-tells-fans-relax-after-virgil-van-dijk-transfer-claim/

This afternoon he tweeted that a move for Van Dijk was on and the player was on his way to Liverpool.

The post was retweeted thousands of times by excited Kop fans who thought the transfer deal was going through.

Boxer Derry Mathews asked Thompson for more information and he replied: “Was told it’s happening mate fingers crossed the reach agreement now.”

That too was retweeted scores of times.

Fans bombarded Thompson with messages asking whether a deal was going ahead this evening.

And Thompson responded with a simple one-word tweet which read: “Relax.”

One fan responded: “How can we relax when we didn’t get a player we need a CB”

Another said: “Nothing’s happening lad. Stop hyping the fans up for a big fall!”

A fellow supporter said: “Not sure why an ex player would want to wind up its fans, what’s the point?”

While another wrote: “Literally tweets one word and puts everyone into meltdown.”

But one cynical user tweeted: “Even the former players is talking s**t please.”
