Mary (played by Patti Claire) has been keeping herself busy looking after Tyrone Dobbs’ (Halsall) daughter alongside her duties at the florist after Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and his teenager children left Coronation Street a couple of months ago.

Since her son Jude Appleton (Paddy Wallace), his wife Angie Appleton (Victoria Ekanoye) and their son George left the ITV soap earlier this year, Mary has been focussed on making the Alahan home a happy one.

When Dev and his teenage daughter Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) return to Weatherfield next week however, it seems the household won’t be peaceful anytime soon as the shipowner’s daughter hides a heartbreaking secret.

Self-conscious about her appearance and after spending time in India with her family, Asha will begin using skin lightening cream on herself which lets her to push those closet to her away, including Mary.

Asha’s ordeal was first reported earlier this year, with the ITV soap set to explore the impact skin bleaching products can have on its users, working with the British Skin Foundation to portray the reality of the situation for many young people.

This is one of the first big storyline’s for Asha star Tanisha Gorey, 17, who will be put in the spotlight as her character becomes fixated on altering her appearance.

Speaking about the impact of Asha’ behaviour on her nearest and dearest, Tanisha said in a statement released by ITV: “She’s very hostile with both Dev and Mary, insisting they let her do her own thing.

“Asha lost her mum a long time ago and Dev tries to take on both roles.

“Mary does her best to step in, but for Asha they’re too far removed from what she feels she’s going through and she just wants her own freedom now she’s getting a bit older.”

Of Asha beginning to reject the likes of Mary who have been a pivotal figure in her life, the soap star explained: “Asha is close to Mary but there’s too much of an age gap there.”

Tanisha continued: “She feels like more of a grandmother figure and she can’t open up to her about how she’s feeling.”

Mary would be heartbroken if she ever thought those she cared for couldn’t come to her with their problems, so will Asha’s reluctance to open up leave the florist at a loose end?

Asha’s secret is almost uncovered in upcoming episodes, as after an afternoon out with Mary in which she keeps a lid on her skin lightening regime, the contents of her bag spill out on the floor.

Dev will help Asha to recollect her belongings but the teenager manages to grasp the skin lightning cream just in time before heading upstairs to apply the contents to her body.

The coming weeks and months will see Asha turn to online outlets to source the skin bleaching products, but will anyone notice the extremes the teenager is going to in order to change her appearance?

Speaking about being given the storyline, Tanisha commented: “I knew nothing about these skin lightening creams really, I’d heard it happened but I had no idea it was as common as it actually is.

“I’ve tried to find out a lot more about the issue and now I’m really excited to try and get the message across that this is something young girls are turning to as they struggle with their self esteem.

“I want to make sure I do it justice because if you’re going to cover such a serious issue, which is not shown a lot, then you need to do it in the right way.”

Also coming up on the cobbles later in the year, the residents of Weatherfield will come together to celebrate Ken Barlow’s (William Roache) eightieth birthday.

As part of the celebrations, Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) will be making a guest appearance three years after her exit from the show.

Coronation Street continues Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.

Operation ‘No deal’? UK army braces for Brexit chaos as May faces fierce rejection of divorce plan https://briefnews.eu/operation-no-deal-uk-army-braces-for-brexit-chaos-as-may-faces-fierce-rejection-of-divorce-plan/ https://briefnews.eu/operation-no-deal-uk-army-braces-for-brexit-chaos-as-may-faces-fierce-rejection-of-divorce-plan/#respond Mon, 19 Nov 2018 04:32:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/operation-no-deal-uk-army-braces-for-brexit-chaos-as-may-faces-fierce-rejection-of-divorce-plan/ The military is reportedly drafting contingency plans that could see British troops deployed in the streets, as the prospects of a chaotic Brexit seem increasingly realistic, with Theresa May facing a potential no-confidence vote.

“About 20 officers who normally oversee Operation Temperer… were ordered last week to step up no-deal Brexit planning,” the Sunday Times reported, citing a well-placed military source.

While Operation Temperer officers are reserved as a response to terror attacks, this time they were tasked with devising a strategy to maintain public order and secure the flow of medical supplies to hospitals. As many as 10,000 members of the military could be deployed on British streets should UK exit the EU on March 29 with no deal with Brussels.

“The armed forces stand ready to support Britain on a practical basis,” British defense minister Tobias Ellwood said on the ‘Ridge on Sunday’ television program last week. “There are contingency plans being made, there are discussions being held behind the scenes as to what support our armed forces will do.”

The army always makes “sensible contingency plans” to deal with all types of events, Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Nick Carter told the BBC last week. “At this stage I think people are confident there will be a deal, if there’s not one then we stand ready to help in any way we can.”

British society remains highly divided over Theresa May’s draft withdrawal agreement with the EU which was made public on Wednesday night and prompted the resignation of seven ministers. A YouGov poll conducted on Thursday found twice as many Britons oppose the deal as those who support it (42 to 19 percent).

Amid wide discontent with the deal, May now faces a nearly impossible challenge to get the Parliament to approve the agreement, which makes the chance of no-deal Brexit a very real possibility.

McGregor savaged in rematch rejection https://briefnews.eu/mcgregor-savaged-in-rematch-rejection/ https://briefnews.eu/mcgregor-savaged-in-rematch-rejection/#respond Sat, 20 Oct 2018 16:24:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mcgregor-savaged-in-rematch-rejection/ KHABIB Nurmagomedov won’t fight Conor McGregor again, according to the Russian’s manager Ali Abdelaziz.

The spiteful aftermath of UFC 229 has continued with Abdelaziz taking several shots at McGregor during an interview posted on YouTube with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

In a long wide-ranging interview, Abdelaziz said Khabib was toying with McGregor throughout the main fight of UFC 229 and the Russian star had no intentions of a rematch.

“We have bigger fish to fry,” he said.

“He’s (McGregor) in the past, we’ve just moved on. Right now he’s zero, he has no value, we don’t care about him, he can move on, enjoy his life, enjoy his family but he should be ashamed of himself for everything he said.

“If people back up a little bit, he almost got knocked out by a grappler. I guarantee you, if this guy’s going to keep talking and ask for a rematch, his family should try to stop him, his team should try to stop him, or they should get a life insurance for $ 100 million because he’ll be done.

“He says he want it but he don’t want it. How you want something like that? How you want a nightmare hunting you for 25 minutes? You have to understand, Khabib carried this boy.

“Khabib could have finished in the first, second, third round. He finished him in the fourth round. He carried him to punish him.”

Abdelaziz added he didn’t think the UFC would want McGregor to fight again.

“I don’t think Dana (UFC president White) wanted him to fight Khabib too because at the end of the day Conor brings money but how’re you going to have one of your biggest guys in the sport get killed two times,” he said.

“We know he’s no good. Dana White knows he’s no good. When Dana White made this fight, he knew this fight was going to make money but he knew who was going to get humbled.”

One fight Abdelaziz said he’d like to see is Khabib taking on Georges St-Pierre.

The 37-year-old UFC legend recently called out Khabib and said it was the only fight that could lure him back into the octagon.

“This is a fight I’d like to see, see who is the greatest because I think whoever wins, they can go down in history as the greatest,” Abdelaziz said.

“But at the end of the day, I don’t think the UFC is going to go against and give Georges an opportunity to another title. I don’t think the UFC is going to put a title on the line for Georges.”

Meanwhile, another legend has called out Conor McGregor with 43-year-old Anderson Silva telling TMZ Sports he’d be keen for a superfight.

“Two big names. Two big legends. And, why not?” he said.

“It’s not about money, Conor. It’s about martial arts challenge.”

The McGregor-Nurmagomedov feud was simmering for months before the fight.

Abdelaziz said it started back in Brooklyn, referring to the bus attack in April, which saw McGregor arrested.

Last week, Nurmagomedov blamed the UFC for the attack.

McGregor also threw plenty of verbal attacks at Khabib, which Abdelaziz said were “racist”.

He said it contributed to the crazy scenes after the fight, where Khabib leapt into the crowd, sparking a brawl.

With both men currently banned from fighting until a panel convenes on October 25, where lengthier bans will be discussed, Abdelaziz said both men should be suspended.

“They have to be suspended because you have to show strength, you have show control,” he said.

“Is it justified — Khabib jumping over the cage? Of course not. He’s not happy with that but as I said, there are limits.

“We all have limits. We broke the rules, there are consequences when you break the rules, but there’s also why we broke the rules.

“This thing started in Brooklyn, it didn’t start here. We respect Las Vegas, we respect the government of Las Vegas, we the athletic commission, all these people but this is not the Conor show anymore. Remember Conor threw the first punch in this whole thing.”

The hatred is still strong between the camps as Abdelaziz suggested McGregor should thank referee Herb Dean “because if he was not (there), Khabib would have broken his neck to pieces”.

'Italy won't be bullied': Italian president's govt rejection slammed by both left and right https://briefnews.eu/italy-wont-be-bullied-italian-presidents-govt-rejection-slammed-by-both-left-and-right/ https://briefnews.eu/italy-wont-be-bullied-italian-presidents-govt-rejection-slammed-by-both-left-and-right/#respond Tue, 29 May 2018 12:28:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/italy-wont-be-bullied-italian-presidents-govt-rejection-slammed-by-both-left-and-right/

The Italian president’s rejection of the Euroskeptic coalition’s choice of economy minister, which led to the appointment of a former IMF official as interim PM, has ruffled the feathers of both conservatives and leftists.

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who was at the forefront of the Brexit campaign, had some words for his old foe Brussels while speaking in front of the European Parliament on Tuesday, particularly in regards to Italy’s political crisis.

“They [Italians] question what the euro has done to their economy, they feel they are a victim of the European Union’s immigration policies and as a result of all this they voted in a new government, only to find that bullying, hectoring from the European Commission has been listened to by the Italian president and in the last 48 hours their democracy has been traduced,” he said.

He was referring to Italian President Sergio Mattarella’s rejection of a Euroskeptic finance minister put forth by the coalition formed by the Five Star Movement and Lega parties on Monday. This rejection, and the coalition’s refusal to nominate another candidate, led to a crumbling of its government bid and prompted Mattarella to appoint former International Monetary Fund (IMF) official Carlo Cottarelli as interim prime minister.

According to Farage, however, the Italians won’t be made to lie down by the EU. “In the past, you managed to bully the Danes, you bullied the Irish, you bullied the Greeks into submission. I suspect with Italy today you’ve now bitten off more than you can chew. Bring on more elections and bigger Euroskeptic victories,” he told the parliament.

However, it’s not just Farage and those who align politically with the former UKIP leader who are angered by the way things have unfolded in Italy. Many leftists are also unhappy, including economics professor Yanis Varoufakis, who served as the Greek finance minister from January to July 2015.

“The people of Italy voted against technocrats implementing austerity for the many and socialism for the very, very few. Now they have an IMF apparatchik as PM with a plan to implement more of the same. Could Italy’s president have given the xenophobic populists a greater gift?” he tweeted.

He went on to state that preventing the coalition from forming a government and “ushering in an IMF apparatchik” only serves to “guarantee their election with a larger majority soon.” The belief that the president’s move will only serve to further fuel Euroskeptic sentiment in the country is one shared by many analysts.

University of Milan politics professor Marco Bassani agrees that new elections will have the same outcome as the previous one, but stated that the situation could become a vicious cycle. “Let’s say Italians go to the elections in two or three months… clearly the Five Star movement and the Lega Nord will win again. So they will go there with the same list of ministers. So what happens? Will the president say no again? It could go on forever, this is like a stalemate,” he told RT.

When asked whether he believes Mattarella’s decision was guided by Brussels, he answered in the affirmative. “Was it imposed and was it something that came from Brussels? The answer is yes. I don’t know whether it was in a direct way or indirect way.”

Both parties of the coalition have spoken out against Mattarella’s decision, with Five Star Movement leader Luigi Di Maio calling for the president’s impeachment. Lega leader Matteo Salvini, meanwhile, summed his views up by saying: “In a democracy, if we are still in a democracy, there’s only one thing to do, let the Italians have their say.” He added that Italy is not a “colony” and that “we won’t have Germany tell us what to do.”

Ford's rejection of Michael Cohen offer prompts Mueller inquiry https://briefnews.eu/fords-rejection-of-michael-cohen-offer-prompts-mueller-inquiry/ https://briefnews.eu/fords-rejection-of-michael-cohen-offer-prompts-mueller-inquiry/#respond Sat, 12 May 2018 23:00:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fords-rejection-of-michael-cohen-offer-prompts-mueller-inquiry/

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal (sub. required), Michael Cohen, personal attorney to President Donald Trump, offered to provide consulting services to Ford. Reuters reports that Cohen touted his close connection to Trump when he made the consulting offer in January of 2017, but his overture was quickly rejected before any specific fees were discussed, according to a person briefed on the matter.

Even though Ford declined to work with Cohen, the office of Robert Mueller, special counsel in the Russia probe, learned of Cohen’s contact with Ford and asked the automaker for information and records about the offer. Mueller has interviewed Ford’s head of government affairs Ziad Ojakli, reports WSJ.

This report comes after news that AT&T, the second largest wireless carrier in the United States, paid Essential Consultants LLC, a firm set up by Cohen, a total of $ 600,000 in 2017 for advice on navigating “a wide range of issues,” including its proposed $ 85 billion merger with Time Warner. Trump’s administration opposes the merger.

Essential Consultants is the same entity Cohen used to pay Stormy Daniels a fee of $ 130,000 days before the 2016 presidential election as part of a nondisclosure agreement that barred her from discussing an alleged sexual encounter with Trump. He denies any encounter took place.

Following Trump’s election, corporations have paid Cohen at least $ 2.95 million through Essential Consultants, the Washington Post reported, citing figures confirmed by the companies. Cohen is currently under federal investigation after a referral from Mueller’s team resulted in a search of his offices and hotel room.

Russia’s Supreme Court turns down Navalny’s appeal against presidential bid rejection https://briefnews.eu/russias-supreme-court-turns-down-navalnys-appeal-against-presidential-bid-rejection/ https://briefnews.eu/russias-supreme-court-turns-down-navalnys-appeal-against-presidential-bid-rejection/#respond Sat, 30 Dec 2017 16:21:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russias-supreme-court-turns-down-navalnys-appeal-against-presidential-bid-rejection/

The appeal of Aleksey Navalny – an opposition activist aiming to run for president – against the decision of the Central Election Commission not to register him as a candidate, has been rejected by the Supreme Court of Russia.

The court decision was made public by Navalny’s lawyer, Ivan Zhdanov, on Saturday. Saying that the appeal had been rejected, he called for a “voters’ strike.” The latest decision will also be appealed, and a complaint will be submitted to the European Court of Human Rights, Zhdanov told Interfax.

Earlier this week, the Central Election Commission announced that the opposition activist cannot run in the 2018 presidential race because of the previous court rulings against him. Russian law forbids people with unserved lengthy prison sentences from running for office, members of the commission stated.

Navalny’s representatives say the rejection was unlawful, claiming that the constitution only prohibits those who are serving their sentences in prison from becoming candidates. Navalny was placed on a five-year probation period for his role in a $ 500,000 embezzlement scheme in 2014. Later, another year was added to that. The activist is also currently serving a five-year suspended sentence handed down in 2013 for a fraud scheme.

This year, the blogger turned opposition figure was found guilty of repeatedly violating the law by organizing unauthorized public events, meetings, or protests. For that, he was placed under administrative arrest for several days. Navalny claimed he had not broken any laws.

Sting of 2014 rejection keeps Canada's Bailey Bram motivated https://briefnews.eu/sting-of-2014-rejection-keeps-canadas-bailey-bram-motivated/ https://briefnews.eu/sting-of-2014-rejection-keeps-canadas-bailey-bram-motivated/#respond Sat, 11 Nov 2017 02:45:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sting-of-2014-rejection-keeps-canadas-bailey-bram-motivated/ TAMPA, Fla. — Four years later the memory still stings like an open wound.

It was on Dec. 22, 2013 that Bailey Bram was informed she would not be a member of the Canadian women’s hockey team at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi. Not unless somebody got hurt.

“I was brought into a room and told, ‘Unfortunately at this point you are going to be named an alternate and if someone gets hurt, you’ll play. If not you’ll just practise with the team until it leaves for Sochi. If no one gets hurt you won’t be going,'” Bram recalled.

And by the way, enjoy your Christmas.

As she spoke those words, she worked desperately to hold back her tears. It still hurts that much.

But like many who have gone through a similar experience only to get back on the horse, Bram is back. Though Team Canada still has to make five cuts before participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Bram has asserted herself nicely as a solid, two-way threat who thinks defence first, yet has the ability to chip in on offence.

While Bram didn’t make it onto the score sheet in Canada’s 4-0 win over Finland at the Four Nations Cup Friday afternoon, she certainly was a factor in the game killing penalties, taking the odd turn late on the power play and breaking up plays much to the dismay of the Finns.

“Bailey has shown tremendous resiliency,” Team Canada coach Laura Schuler said. “She is an all-around player who is capable of playing on any of our four lines. That is a good thing. She is a player that can really put pressure on the opponent. She has great speed and she kills a lot of penalties.”

Against Finland Friday, Canada got goals from Jennifer Wakefield, her fourth in two games, Brianne Jenner, Sarah Nurse and captain Marie-Philip Poulin. Goalie Genevieve made eight saves in recording her second shutout in as many starts.

Canada will play for gold on Sunday against arch-rival U.S.

Finland Canada Worlds Hockey

At the end of the day Canada won the gold medal in Sochi, so it’s a little hard to argue with the player selection. Just don’t try to tell that to Bram. To nobody’s surprise, Bram said watching those Games was difficult.

“That whole Olympics for me is a little bit of a blur,” she said. “I do remember watching the games, but when you train for a whole year with the girls and they are your best friends, it’s tough not to be a part of it. Still, I was so proud of them and so happy for them when they won.”

Bram, 27, admitted it took a while, with a lot of sports psychology sessions, to get over the disappointment. She said she came out tougher at the other end.

“I knew I had a lot more in me to give,” said the five-foot-eight, 140-pound left winger. “I wasn’t done. I was pretty young at the time and I think I learned a lot from it. Going through that has helped make me the player I am now.”

And that player is one that flatly refuses to be outworked by an opponent.

‘Pride myself on details’

“I think I have learned the game a lot more,” Bram said. “I know our system like the back of my hand. I pride myself on the little details and habits of the game, whether it’s a little chip along the boards to move the puck or a big block on the penalty-kill. Those are the things that will get our team going. I’m probably not the one who is going to score the big goal, but if I can stop the puck from going to the back of our net, then I have done my job.”

Not being part of the 2014 Olympics meant not being there with her longtime friend Jocelyne Larocque. The two hail from Ste. Anne, a small town in Manitoba with a population of 2,114. Larocque, a small, but punishing defenceman, was equally as disappointed.

“That was obviously tough on her, but it was tough on me, too,” Larocque said. “It’s something I would have loved to share with her. I was released in 2010, so I know exactly how she felt and it’s not a fun feeling. At the end of the day in 2013 she played hard every day and had no regrets. She plays with a lot of heart and that is something that is so valuable.”

The 2013 experience aside, Bram said it is special to be one of 28 players being considered for the 2018 Olympic team. She knows how many players across Canada would love to be in her skates.

Bram said there is a certain underlying nervousness that nearly all players face when trying out for a team, yet she knows she can only control the things she does. And she’s okay with that.

“I always say I want to be the hardest working person on the ice,” Bram said. “If I lose a battle it drives me to be better so it doesn’t happen again.”

Steven Soderbergh Shares a 1984 Rejection Letter From Lucasfilm https://briefnews.eu/steven-soderbergh-shares-a-1984-rejection-letter-from-lucasfilm/ https://briefnews.eu/steven-soderbergh-shares-a-1984-rejection-letter-from-lucasfilm/#respond Thu, 19 Oct 2017 10:11:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/steven-soderbergh-shares-a-1984-rejection-letter-from-lucasfilm/ steven soderbergh rejection

If you’re struggling with job rejection after job rejection in your 20s, don’t worry. Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor was Steven Soderbergh an indie darling director immediately after he joined the film industry. It took work, and rejection by one of the top movie studios of the day.

In April 1984, Soderbergh was an aspiring 21-year-old filmmaker scraping by as a game show scorer and a freelance film editor. But in an effort to break into Hollywood, he decided to send a demo reel of short films shot on Super 8mm to Lucasfilm. They rejected him. And Soderbergh still has the letter.

Soderbergh, the director of Ocean’s Eleven, Logan Lucky, and sex, lies, and videotape, doesn’t seem like the kind of filmmaker who would gravitate toward the studio behind Star Wars, but just like every 20-something in the film business, he was likely a huge nerd for the sci-fi series.

So Soderbergh sent his demo reel of films that he had worked on since high school to Lucasfilm. But shortly after, he received a rejection letter with his tapes returned to him. Soderbergh posted a photo of the rejection letter he received in 1984 on his secret Twitter account (if you’re wondering why the avatar is of Soderbergh in a cowboy hat and why there’s no check mark), along with a caption, “It just made me STRONGER.”

The letter reads:

“Because of the increasing number of stories and ideas received each day, it has become impossible for our small staff to review each idea on its own merit. Accordingly, Lucasfilm has reluctantly adopted a policy of returning all materials to the sender without examination. Please know our returning your tape is in no way a reflection upon its merits.”

Soderbergh didn’t take long to bemoan the rejection. A year after he received the letter, he got his real big break directing the concert film 9012Live: The Solos, and four years later, he made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival with sex, lies, and videotape. Soderbergh went on to win the Palme D’Or and an Oscar nomination for the visionary indie film, and the rest his history. Soderbergh is now an Oscar-winning director (for Traffic), and he got his Star Wars connection after all: The Force Awakens‘ Adam Driver starred in his recent return to feature filmmaking, Logan Lucky. And if you count co-star Daniel Craig’s Stormtrooper cameo, that makes two Star Wars connections.

Gab, a Twitter rival popular with the Breitbart crowd, is suing Google. The lawsuit, filed in Pennsylvania federal court on Thursday, argues that Google violated antitrust laws when it rejected Gab’s app from its Android app store.

Gab says Google rejected Gab to help its business partner Twitter. Google and Twitter signed a data-sharing deal in 2015, and Gab argues the deal gave Google a financial stake in Twitter’s success. The deal “makes the Google search engine immeasurably more valuable,” Gab writes in its lawsuit. As a result of the deal, “the two companies’ user bases have essentially been merged.”

In Gab’s view, the decision to block its app from the Play Store “is intended to, and does, unlawfully protect the financial and strategic benefits it enjoys by virtue of its partnership with Twitter, Gab’s chief competitor, from other competitors.”
