Beth Griffith-Manley (Team Kelly), “Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)” — Grade: B+ | The daughter of Johnny Griffith of Motown’s Funk Brothers, this 46-year-old former background singer for Anita Baker chose Aretha to cover because her dad had once played piano for the Queen of Soul. But it was also a good song selection as it showcased her range in what sounded like an effortless way. In addition, there was a smooth, silky quality to what Kelly called Beth’s “classic” voice that, perhaps not coincidentally, called to mind Anita Baker. At last a solid contender for the female R&B lane… unless her age works against her with younger viewers.
Selkii (Team Blake), “I Try” — Grade: B | This South African-born charmer — whose name, she explained, “actually means Seal, but it was already taken” — stripped down Macy Gray’s hit and redid it as if it were folk-pop rendered by a Norah Jones with a tangier voice. Kelly marveled, “You don’t sound like anyone on this show.” Which didn’t seem entirely true, though I’d be hard pressed to say who she sounded like. (A slightly raspier Betsy Ade maybe?) Anyway, she has an appealing presence, good range and a strong voice that suggested she could handle country (which likely will come in handy on Team Blake) or the blues as easily as folk-pop.
Denton Arnell (Team John), “Hold On, We’re Going Home” — Grade: B- | This 31-year-old Chicagoan revealed before his Blind that he’d brought an engagement ring in order to propose to his girlfriend after his audition. Luckily, he got a chair turn from John (and only John) pretty fast. How much would it have sucked to have been planning to pop the question after getting on The Voice… and then not getting on The Voice? Denton’s voice was solid and sexy as hell, and had a tone to it that really sold his coach. The Drake number he chose didn’t allow him to show off a whole lotta range, but damn, that last run was sweet! Oh, and his significant other accepted his on-stage proposal — even after he accidentally head-butted her. (Oops.)
Ciera Dumas (Team Adam), “Tell Me You Love Me” — Grade: B+ | After revealing in her getting-to-know-you interview that she was as fearless with her hair color as LiLi Joy, Ciera told us that she’d been voted Most Likely to Win The Voice in high school. And based on her Blind, it seemed like it could actually happen. Yeah, the coaches nailed Ciera on getting rattled when she got chair turns, but nonetheless, there was real star power in the way her voice got super raspy when she swung for the high notes. “That’s the money for you,” said Blake. “I felt the pain” in those parts, added John. If only she hadn’t picked Adam to be her coach…
Andrew Sevener (Team Blake), “Honky Tonk Woman” — Grade: B- | This 22-year-old Texan, who’s been playing in a band with his parents since he was 15, didn’t just walk onto that stage, he strutted, and then unleashed a vocal that was freakin’ irresistibly raucous. At times, he definitely seemed like he could’ve used more control over his voice — there was a bum note here and there — but the overall impression he made was “Wow!” As Kelly noted, the sandpapery quality of his vocal was very Pryor Baird. If Andrew can get a better grip on the power his voice possesses, he could be a real force to be reckoned with (maybe even the rocker I’ve been hoping for this season?).
Mari (Team Adam), “Boo’d Up” — Grade: B+ | This 20-year-old’s Blind actually started us off blind, which was a lotta fun when she got a chair turn and we saw that she was this adorable kid dressed like she was part of the Scooby gang. And she was a kid with chops, too, singing alternately with a sweetness and a forcefulness that screamed, “I will not be denied.” She even made me like Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up,” which hadn’t done anything for me when Lynnea Moorer performed it in Season 15. Another strong female R&B singer — and this one without her age being a potential stumbling block. If only she hadn’t chosen Adam over John as her coach… what was she thinking?
Abby Kasch (Team Kelly), “Here for the Party” — Grade: C+ | The first few notes of this 20-year-old tomboy’s Gretchen Wilson cover sounded so good, you could’ve convinced me that she was lip-synching to an iTunes download. Unfortunately, the rest of her performance wasn’t quite so impressive; she didn’t go as big as I (and maybe the coaches) would’ve hoped on her glory note, and her voice didn’t have the gravel to it that I (and maybe only I?) was hoping to hear. Perhaps that was why Kelly and Blake waited until nearly the end of the number to hit their buttons. Fun performance, and not at all bad, but not so good, either, that I’m convinced she’ll sail through the Battles.
Mikaela Astel (Team Kelly), “Electric Love” — Grade: A- | This 14-year-old from Queens struck me as too young to be trying out… until she opened her mouth. Then holy crap! Ho-ly crap! There was just magic in her voice. She sounded like a pixie singing a siren song or something. “Your tone can’t be taught,” said Kelly, likening the youngster’s sound to Regina Spektor and Julia Michaels’. No lie, her gorgeous, poised performance nearly brought a tear to my cynical, jaded eye. She’s like the anti-Reagan Strange — crazy young but composed and confident.
Anthony Ortiz (Team Adam), “What Makes You Beautiful” — Grade: D | The little bit of this skateboarder’s performance that we were shown hinted that it was a good thing that his coach liked the raw quality of his voice — ’cause he was pretty raw.
Olive Blu (Team John), “On and On” — Grade: C | We only heard a snippet of Olive’s performance, but it suggested that her coach was right; she has a style all her own. It just wasn’t necessarily a style that I thought would take her past the Battles.
Shawn Sounds (Team John), “All My Life” — Grade: A- | This self-described middle-school teacher by day, rock star by night, went viral last year with a video of himself singing in his Houston classroom. (Hey, it woulda kept me awake in class.) On stage, he schooled the competition in what a controlled vocal sounds like. Moreover, his voice was so rich that whenever he did a run, it sounded like warm caramel being stretched. John even called Shawn’s last run the equivalent of a vocal triple axel. Adam described what Shawn had done as painting with his voice. Need I mention that he got a four-chair turn? He also smartly went with John as his coach.

Whoopi Goldberg has let slip she asked Doctor Who executives if she could play the first female Time Lord.
The 63-year-old Hollywood actress spoke of her ambition to portray the legendary character on David Tennant’s podcast.
However, the mother-of-one was rejected by BBC bosses, who later gave the role to British actress Jodie Whittaker.
Recounting the moment she reached out to the producers, she told the 47-year-old actor: “The idea of that just made me happy.”
Unfortunately, they declined her offer to play the thirteenth Doctor, with her saying: “But they were like, ‘Um no’.”
Revealing her fascination with sci-fi, she added: “I always felt like science fiction predicted the future.
“Whether it was climate change, hand computers or being able to move around in different dimensions.”
The film star has longed to be apart of the long-running sci-fi series and previously spoke about her desire to star in the show.
“I always hope when I come to England the BBC will say, ‘Hey we want you to do something’. I would love that,” she told The Sun.
“You have a different quality now on television. The way you guys have always done shows has always been the smartest and we’ve finally just figured it out.”
She continued: “I like the idea of doing things the way y’all do them, you do some really fun stuff like Black Mirror or, you know, I’m still dying to do Doctor Who.”
Whoopi, the host of the US daytime show The View, is one of the few actresses to be awarded an Emmy, an Oscar, a Tony and a Grammy title.
Actress Jodie was announced as the first female Doctor in 2017 and is currently filming for the new series.
At the time, she said: “I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet.
“It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”
Meanwhile, Doctor Who’s executive producer Chris Chibnall admitted he hoped the thirteenth Doctor would be a woman.
“I always knew I wanted the thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice,” he divulged.
“Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away.”
He went on to say: “Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role.”
Doctor Who is due to return to BBC One in early 2020, according to the show’s official Twitter page.
Cardiff’s club-record £15million signing has been missing since Monday evening.
The plane carrying Sala disappeared when flying over the English channel with the striker on his way to link up with his Cardiff team-mates.
Thorough searches continued on Thursday, however, police are still no closer to confirming what happened.
Cardiff were hoping their record signing from Nantes would keep them in the Premier League this season.
And while Choo admits all of Cardiff’s thoughts are with Sala, the Blue Birds chief says the club must plan ahead.
Cardiff attempted to extend their transfer window following Sala’s disappearance, however, the Premier League rejected their proposal.
“From the club’s perspective we are managing this situation now but we have another department that has to continue looking at the transfers,” Choo told talkSPORT.
“It’s really difficult physically, emotionally and mentally to try and cope in a situation like this.
“We have to segregate our mind into looking for Emiliano, helping the family and provide our best care for the family by giving them the information they want, which is totally factual.
“And then we are still running a business which continues, and we still have to meet the transfer deadline.
“I have spoken to the Premier League, I have spoken with (managing director) Richard Masters and the Premier League executives yesterday.
“I said how tough it is for us to cope, given that there is eight days to go and we’ve been watching Emiliano for months and we finally got it over the line and then…
“There are eight days to go and we don’t really know how to cope with this scenario. But we have to meet the deadline. The bottom line from the Premier League is we have to meet the deadline like anybody else.”
Guernsey Police have conducted the search for Sala and pilot David Ibbotson on board the missing aircraft.
They have confirmed they will continue to search on Thursday, with police also investigating the island of Burhou for traces of the plane.
Guernsey Police said: “The search is ongoing and a decision about continuing will be made once all assets have completed this morning’s search pattern.
“The island of Burhou has been searched by foot. No trace of the aircraft or those on board has been found.
“Further information will be released once it is available.”
The plane carrying Sala had been flying at 5,000 feet but was at 2,300 when Jersey air traffic controllers lost contact.
A stunning WhatsApp voice message from Sala has since emerged following his disappearance, where the 28-year-old told his friends he was scared to board ‘a plane that seems like it is falling to pieces’.
Sala said: “Hello, little brothers, how are you crazy people?
“Brother, I’m dead, I was here in Nantes doing things, things, things, things and things, and it never stops, it never stops, it never stops.
“I’m here on a plane that looks like it’s about to fall apart, and I’m going to Cardiff, crazy, tomorrow we already start, and in the afternoon we start training, boys, in my new team…
“Let’s see what happens, so, how are you brothers and sisters, all right?
“If in an hour and a half you have no news from me, I don’t know if they are going to send someone to look for me because they cannot find me, but you know … Dad, how scared am I!”

The Frenchman has been in and out of the side so far this season, but seemingly the Reds are still keen to tie him down.
A-LEAGUE LATE MAIL: SYDNEY DERBY BOOSTS, BIG BLOW FOR VICTORY
But according to Sky Sports, the 22-year-old has turned down fresh terms, with the club still hopeful a deal can be reached.
ESPN reported earlier today how the striker is prepared to sign a new five-year contract – but the two parties are seemingly some way off agreeing terms on this.
There has been much speculation over the future of the 22-year-old – with rumours of unrest after falling behind Alexis Sanchez in the pecking order last season and failing to make the France World Cup squad.
And further signs suggested the tricky winger was headed towards the exit due to his fractious relations with boss Jose Mourinho in pre-season.

However, Old Trafford top brass are increasingly confident their forward will eventually sign a lucrative new deal with the club that will keep him Manchester-bound till 2023.
The 22-year-old has been in good form of late, scoring three times in his last three games, including a brace in the Red Devils 2-2 draw with Chelsea.
And the Man United hiearachy are keen to secure his signature and shoe away the interest abroad from the likes of Juventus, Bayern Munich and PSG.
Martial has made 145 appearances for the club since his £36million move from Monaco in 2015, scoring 40 goals in that period.
In the meantime Man Utd are also keen to tie-up Ander Herrera with a new contract.
The Spaniard’s current deal expires in the summer and the 29-year-old will be able to discuss offers with other clubs in January if terms are not agreed.

This summer saw the release of All or Nothing – a football documentary produced by Amazon Prime that went behind the scenes of Manchester City’s Premier League title-winning season.
Cameras captured detailed insight of Pep Guardiola’s training methods as well as giving fans the chance to see exactly what goes on in the dressing room.
The documentary received mixed reviews with some praising the all-areas access it gave supporters while others believe there were parts of it that seemed staged.
But the overall success of the documentary has now reportedly seen Amazon approach Liverpool about doing the same with them this season with Jurgen Klopp’s side one of the favourite to win the title.
However, according to the Daily Mail, the German was the man chiefly responsible for rejecting the proposal.
The report claims many of Liverpool’s top brass, including American owner John Henry, were keen to let the cameras in and gave the green light for the documentary.
But Klopp put his foot down and voiced his concerns over the series being filmed.
The former Borussia Dortmund boss feels there is nothing to be gained from it and reckons people’s behaviour changes when in front of camera.
Klopp is keen to not upset the harmony of his dressing room.
Liverpool have made a stunning start to the season, winning all five of their Premier League matches before beating Paris Saint-Germain in their first Champions League match on Tuesday night.
After Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over the Ligue 1 champions at Anfield, Klopp insisted there was no mountain his side could not climb.
“Denying them so often, I don’t think a lot of teams have done that,” said Klopp.
“It was necessary we played good, the atmosphere was fantastic, so special to do these things in this stadium.
“One, two, three years ago the people would have thought that’s a mountain we cannot climb.
“It’s still so unbelievably difficult, you can’t plan it. What the boys make of the match plan is extraordinary, it’s outstanding.
“If one of them gave a yard less, game over.”
Liverpool return to Premier League action tomorrow when Southampton make the trip to Anfield (3pm).
Meanwhile, Amazon hope to strike a deal with Bayern Munich for a new football documentary.
