Ford’s top executives took heat from shareholders over their plan to do away with sedans as we know them in Ford’s North American lineup, as the company held its annual meeting Thursday. Critics said the plan to shelve the Fiesta, Focus and Taurus, reduce the Focus to one crossover model, and concentrate on high-margin trucks and SUVs was a shortsighted abandonment of entire market segments of affordable vehicles.
“This doesn’t mean we intend to lose those customers,” Ford CEO Jim Hackett said. “We want to give them what they’re telling us they really want. We’re simply reinventing the American car.”
Ford has said SUVs/crossovers and pickups will constitute 90 percent of its North American lineup by 2020. And though only the Mustang and new Focus Active will remain, it plans to add new vehicles going forward that offer better fuel economy and utility, including EVs and hybrids. Hackett characterized the shift not as an abandonment of traditional cars but as a transformation of them.
“We don’t want anyone to think we’re leaving anything,” Hackett said. “We’re just moving to a modern version. This is an exciting new generation of vehicles coming from Ford.”
It was Hackett’s first annual meeting as CEO, and for the second year it was conducted online rather than in person. The change to Ford’s lineup is part of Hackett’s overall plan to cut $ 25.2 billion in costs by the year 2022.
Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. blamed the negative reaction to the lineup plan on media coverage.
“I wish the coverage had been a little different,” he said. “If you got beyond the headline, you’ll see we’re adding to our product lineup and by 2020 we’ll have the freshest showroom in the industry. The headlines look like Ford’s retreating. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.”
While Ford was clear about its plans for the Blue Oval, it has been less clear about the Lincoln brand. Hackett on Thursday said only that the Lincoln Continental, re-introduced just two years ago, would continue “through its life cycle” — but it has been such a slow seller that rumor has Ford killing the Continental again after that, and Hackett made no mention of a new generation. Presumably the MKZ sedan will go away when its twin the Ford Fusion does, but although Ford has outlined end dates for other models, the Fusion’s departure is open-ended.
The stock price has been a frustration for investors for years and has fallen 12 percent since the first of the year. Bill Ford addressed that sore subject Thursday.
“I share your frustration. The whole management team does,” Ford told shareholders. “Look, we want to get the stock price moving. The business can get fitter, and it will get fitter.”
Despite overall profitability, Ford’s market capitalization of $ 44 billion trails unprofitable Silicon Valley electric car maker Tesla Inc, which has a market capitalization of $ 51.3 billion, a reflection of investor doubts that Ford can re-ignite growth.
But shareholders should expect “fairly large” changes in the coming year, Bill Ford told Reuters.
In addition to lineup changes and cost-cutting, Ford still faces questions about lagging performance in certain regions and calls for more details on its restructuring.
“It could be regions, it could be functions, it could be areas of emphasis,” Bill Ford said in an interview on Tuesday. “We’ve done some big things, and we still have some big things to do.”
The automaker lost $ 4 billion in South America from 2013 through the first quarter of this year, and its chief of global operations said in January it was “exploring every option you can imagine.”
Analysts have also urged an overhaul of European passenger car operations to help Ford reach its 8 percent pre-tax profit margin goal.
Bill Ford said the automaker will be able to use cost savings to return cash to shareholders, invest in new technology and businesses and fund restructuring.”We believe we can take care of all three,” he said.
Voters in Thursday’s meeting once again rejected an annual attempt to remove the Ford family’s special class of shares.
Finally, Ford officials declined to say whether the board of directors, who met this week, had voted to buy and rehabilitate the decrepit and abandoned Michigan Central Station in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, part of its plans to buy up other properties and create a large creative campus there.
But Automotive News reported that workers in construction vests and hardhats were spotted Thursday inside the fence surrounding the 500,000-square-foot depot.

Syfy’s new series Krypton takes a look at Superman’s home planet two centuries before the iconic superhero was even born. Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) is Kal-El’s grandfather, making him Jor-El’s dad. While the house of El feuds with houses of Zod and Val, time traveler Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) comes from the future to warn Seg that he has to persevere to ensure that Superman is born.
Man of Steel screenwriter David Goyer created Krypton, but Cameron Welsh is the showrunner. Welsh worked for Goyer on his Constantine series and had developed another show with Goyer. Welsh spoke with /Film by phone last week and there are some mild spoilers for the pilot in the discussion.
Krypton premieres Wednesday, March 21 on Syfy.
I was struck by the diversity on planet Krypton. Have we ever seen black people on Krypton in any of the movies before?
I don’t know that we have. It’s definitely something we were very conscious of. We want to be representative and inclusive. We want to do that both in front of and behind the camera. It’s a very important part of this show.
Behind the scenes, do you have a lot of diverse directors?
Our writers room is a pretty diverse writers room. There are people of color, women. There’s, to be frank, not as much diversity in the directors as I would have liked. Should we go ahead for season two, should that happen, that’s definitely something [we’ll do]. I think it’s important for everybody in the industry to keep working on that at all times and making it a priority. That’s just something that we’ll always strive to do on the show.
The technology on Krypton is very advanced even though it’s 200 years before us. Did they have tablets before us?
Absolutely, yeah. This is a planet that has evolved so far beyond where we’re at even back then. They’ve always been portrayed as the most technologically advanced society in the universe so we felt it was important to have them be more advanced than we are now, even in their past. I think that helps show just how advanced they will eventually become. I think it’s a society where women don’t give birth anymore. That’s not how life is [created] if you look at the genesis chamber, and I think that’s part of the fun of science fiction. When you get into world building and imagine some of those things, it allows us to in some ways tell a bit of a cautionary tale as well.
Is that also reflected in their language? They speak very modernly like “piece of sh–” or “judgey.” Does that also reflect how advanced their society is, they were talking like us 200 years ago?
That was probably more about just trying to find the right tone for the show. Sometimes it becomes too involved. We just didn’t want it to feel sterile. I just felt like it’d be harder to engage for our audience if it was too formal. It might just feel a bit harder to break down that wall between the audience and the characters.
We hear eight notes of the John Williams Superman theme. Is that the maximum of that iconic score that you would use?
I don’t remember exactly how those conversations went. I just remember the end point being that we had two opportunities to use it in the pilot and we hopefully chose the right moments. Sometimes it’s better to have a light touch than to overuse it. That’s what we tried to do. Hopefully it creates that stirring feeling when we first hear those notes. It’s a classic score. When you hear those notes, to me it’s so evocative. I guess the hairs start to stand up a little bit for me. It just takes me back to seeing Christopher Reeve all those years ago.
If Seg’s parents die, does that already change history?
No, I think Seg’s parents were always going to die. History has already changed in the pilot. By the time the pilot’s ended, things have already, by virtue of Adam Strange being there, things are already different. So the timeline has already changed which is kind of the irony of that as a device really. When somebody tries to travel through time to prevent time from changing, that invariably means they’ve already changed time.
But Seg’s story always included losing his family?
Yes.
Does the gold mask that The Voice of Rao wears come from the comic books?
No, it didn’t but I think in episode two we talk about what that mask represents. What we’ll learn is that Kandor, Krypton is a theocracy. There’s only one religion, Roa, that is practiced. We learn that there used to be a number of gods who were followed. There was some kind of event, a cataclysmic event took place that stopped the world from spinning and led to this sort of rationalization once the resources started to dwindle. For Krypton to survive, they were forced into rationalization. Part of that led to the demise of all the other religions with Rao becoming the one dominant. It has a big function in the show, religion. We’ll unpack that as the season progresses.
Was that striking mask with all the faces a big design task?
It was a tough one. Wearing it can be a little restrictive. It can be hard to see. We had to redesign it in a different way to create a way to see through it properly so he can move around. We had to have multiple versions of it for different things. To get it on, you had to have a section that was carved out of it. It was a tricky one but I think it’s a very cool design.
Is there a front and a back for the actor to wear, even though it looks uniform all around?
Yeah, there is an opening but on certain shots, we need to augment that with VFX to fill in that gap.
On the wardrobe, does all of that text on the robes mean something in Kryptonian?
Yes, yes. Everything. You see a lot of writing throughout. It’s always something specific. It’s one of the things about this show. Every costume, every bit of set decoration, everything’s bespoke. It’s all made. We can’t go and buy off the rack for clothing or props, food, weaponry, anything. It’s all made. Everything’s a make for the show. It means there’s a lengthy design process. It’s part of the fun of it really, to do all that world building and come up with those designs.
Do you know what the text on the robe means? Did someone write that passage?
I can’t remember what it all is off the top of my head but yes, it could be as simple as a prayer. There’s quite a few different robes and you see it tattooed across the face of a couple clerics as well. I can’t recall exactly what the phrase is about.
What are your standing sets? Would it be the bar, the genesis chamber, the street alley?
The entire rankless district is a massive set. It’s a big square with all these different alleyways and streets. One of them leads into the apartment where his family lives. You go down another street and that’ll take you to the bar. That’s another set of its own. We have what we call the guilded area which we don’t see in the pilot but we explore from episode two on. It’s in complete contrast to the rankless area. It’s bathed in golden light and it’s very austere, a very different feeling. We have Fort Rozz where the military guild work out of. That’s another standing set. We have the tribunal. That’s part of the lawmakers guild. We have Daron’s office. We have the outlands which is outside of the domed city, out in the arctic wastelands. There’s quite a few standing sets. We have the watch platform, quite a few.
Brainiac is inching his way towards Krypton. Do you have a timeline for his arrival?
There is, but in our depiction of Brainiac, he doesn’t even necessarily need to be on Krypton. He doesn’t need boots on the ground to start terrorizing it really. We’ll see his influence felt on the planet before he even touches down. One of the things that’s really fun about the show is bringing that character to life. We haven’t seen Brainiac in live-action before so we’re very excited to unleash that character to the world.

Martha Stewart has lived the lives and careers of at least a dozen people in the last 76 years.
From model, to stockbroker, to cookbook author, to cooking show cohost with the rapper Snoop Dogg, Stewart has done it all.
There were times when it seemed that Stewart had reached the end of her career. In 2004, Stewart was found guilty on charges related to insider trading, and she spent five months in jail.
But since the scandal, Stewart has only come back stronger. Today, she has a show on VH1 with the rapper Snoop Dogg, called “Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party.” She has authored 87 books. Stewart’s reach extends to everything from her own meal-kit brand to a craft line at Michaels.

Stewart was born in 1941 as Martha Kostyra. She was raised in Nutley, New Jersey.
By the time Stewart was in high school, she had started her modeling career, which continued into her time at Barnard College. Living in New York City, the $ 50 an hour she could make modeling helped provide her with some spending money.

She married Andrew Stewart, a Yale Law School student, before graduating from Barnard with a degree in art and architectural history. Her first career was as a stockbroker at a boutique firm, but her passions lay elsewhere.
After moving with her husband to Westport, Connecticut, Stewart threw herself into renovating a farmhouse built in 1805 on Turkey Hill Road — a house that would become an iconic part of her lifestyle brand.
She started a catering company, which cooked gourmet meals for as many as 1,500 people at a time and exploded into a $ 1 million business.
The catering business also led to the book that launched her career.
Publishing executive Alan Mirken saw Stewart’s potential when she was catering a book-launch party, and he encouraged her to write a cookbook herself. The result was her first book, published in 1982 and titled “Entertaining.”
AP“Entertaining” was a hit and sold 625,000 copies, according to Entrepreneur magazine.
Stewart quickly followed it up with more books, including “Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook Menus,” “The Wedding Planner,” and “Martha Stewart’s Christmas.” She became a regular guest on TV programs like “The Oprah Winfrey Show” while growing into a role as the go-to home-cooking guru for millions of Americans. By the late 1980s, people would spend $ 900 to fly to Connecticut for a three-day “entertaining seminar” at Turkey Hill.
“Today, the 48-year-old former model and Wall Street stockbroker is a one-woman, multimillion-dollar industry whose name has become synonymous with gracious living,” The Sun-Sentinel reported in 1989.
Stewart launched a magazine, Martha Stewart Living, in 1991. In 1997, she took over ownership of the magazine from Time Inc. by founding Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, which also included her books and TV show. Stewart was chairman, president, and CEO of the company.
The success required hard work — and some sacrifices. Mirken told The Sun-Sentinel that Stewart worked “28 hours a day and [made] commitments for 56.”
This intense work ethic seems to have contributed to Stewart’s divorce in 1990.
“I had to sacrifice a marriage because of the lure of the great job, the fabulous workplace,” Stewart told CNN recently. “But, I don’t regret it at all, because what I’ve done is something bigger and better than just one marriage.

In 2002, Stewart was hit hard by scandal when news broke that the US Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating her for insider trading. Suddenly, Stewart could no longer focus on her salads, but instead was swamped with negative press and forced to step down as Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s CEO.
In 2003, the SEC charged Stewart for insider trading, saying she sold stock in a biopharmaceutical company in late 2001 after receiving an unlawful tip from her former stockbroker. In March 2004, she was found guilty on all counts, including on charges of obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and making false statements.
“When judge said count 1, you could hear this gasp,” NBC News correspondent Ann Thompson reported at the time. “No one could believe it, no matter how you thought the trial was going, that this would be happening to this woman who is one of the biggest celebrities in this country of making false statements.”
Stewart served five months in West Virginia’s Alderson Federal Prison Camp. Stewart says that the prison stint cost her company an estimated $ 1 billion.

After finishing her prison term, Stewart refused to keep a low profile. She was soon back on the air with “The Martha Stewart Show” and signed deals with Home Depot, PetSmart, and Michaels.
Stewart’s comeback has had its failures along with its successes. In 2015, Sequential Brands Group announced it would acquire Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in a deal valued at $ 353 million, after the company posted losses 11 out of the previous 12 years.
But, in the last few years, Stewart has reemerged as a beloved and still shockingly relevant personality.
She was a surprise hit at the 2015 Comedy Central roast of Justin Bieber. In 2016, she launched a meal-kit line called “Martha & Marley Spoon.” She hosts a cooking show on VH1 with the rapper Snoop Dogg. And, her Twitter account is one of the best online.
In many ways, it makes sense. Stewart is constantly evolving — and she’s determined to come out on top.
“I’m not Lenin or Stalin; I don’t have a master plan,” Stewart told The Sun-Sentinel back in 1989. “There are just so many things can come along and interrupt it.”

Everyone likes money.
But technology that handles money is what’s really popular these days.
The rise of “fintech,” or, financial technology, has unleashed a new breed of apps, sites and services designed to help consumers pay for goods, get loans and manage their retirement accounts.
Fintech is a multi-billion dollar industry, with startups in the US raising around $ 18 billion since 2015, according to PitchBook and nearly 1,400 venture capitalist-backed deals. Two of the most valuable startups in the country — Stripe and SoFi — are in the fintech sector. And there are 11 fintech startups valued at more than $ 1 billion.
To get a sense of why fintech is so hot right now, we took a look at the 11 most valuable VC-funded US fintech startups, as compiled by PitchBook.
Like any fast-growing industry, fintech hasn’t been without its bumps. Some companies on the list have had layoffs and scaled back from their initial success. One in particular — SoFi — forced out its CEO over summer following allegations of sexual harassment at the company.
But all 11 startups have made a dent in the space and give credence to venture capital’s multi-billion dollar bet that fintech isn’t going away anytime soon. Here’s why:
Clover
Clover is valued at $ 1.2 billion since its $ 130 million financing round in June 2017.
Clover offers a cloud-based platform for processing credit cards both online and in-stores. The company works with large payment processors and hardware designers to develop digital payment stations — not unlike the cash registers of the olden days.
If you’ve ever bought a cup of coffee and thought the cashier set up seemed futuristic, it was probably a Clover product.
The company has raised a total of $ 8 million since it launched in 2014.
Glassdoor/Kabbage
Kabbage is valued at $ 1.3 billion, according to PitchBook estimates, thanks to a $ 250 million investment round in August 2017.
Founded in 2009, Kabbage is an automated lending platform for small businesses. It’s since raised $ 1.35 billion in investments and debt financing — making it the most well-funded startup in the state of Georgia.
The company currently has more than 100,000 clients, and has lent more than $ 3.5 billion to small and medium sized businesses since it launched.
Robinhood
Who said Robinhood only gives to the poor?
The zero-commission, US-focused stock brokerage is valued at $ 1.3 billion following a $ 110 million funding round in April 2017.
In total, Robinhood has raised $ 176 million, which is quite a lot considering the founders were initially rejected by 75 different venture capitalists.
Robinhood, which was founded in 2012, is popular with Millennials who appreciate the $ 0 commission fee on its trades. Despite rejecting the common revenue model of its legacy competitors like Charles Schwab and E*Trade, the company makes money on interest from dollars and cents left in its customer’s accounts, and it also offers a premium product called Robinhood Gold, which has additional perks, like extended trading hours, in exchange for a $ 6 monthly subscription fee.

GUEST:
Engaging with customers is one of the most difficult challenges for most companies. With the growing number of ways consumers interact with brands — from phone calls, to texting, to social media messaging — it’s becoming increasingly hard for companies to aggregate interactions into useful information.
Even today, customer service products focus on individual communication channels and treat customers as case numbers or tickets. The founders of Gladly think this standard needs to change. They are reimagining the business/consumer relationship by centralizing all communications and making the atomic unit of their product what it should be: the customer.
Greylock investment partner and Gladly CEO Joseph Ansanelli and Gladly VP of Engineering Michael Wolfe have a deep history of successful ventures together. The two first worked with each other at Kana, an early customer service software company that helped managed email and web based communications.
The pair later founded Vontu, a data loss prevention software that was later acquired by Symantec. In 2015, they got the band back together and incubated Gladly at Greylock Partners with a mission to change how large enterprises interact with their many customers.
(Disclosure: Greylock is an investor in Gladly.)
Below are a few key takeaways from the discussion.
Elisa Schreiber is the marketing partner at Greylock Partners.
