  • Chattanooga, Tennessee has a promising startup scene that is intimately supported by the city government.
  • The city struggled for decades in the wake of post-industrialization, but was reinvigorated by city-operated high-speed internet and pro-entrepreneur policies.
  • AOL cofounder Steve Case highlighted the city’s scene in May through his Rise of the Rest bus tour.
  • This article is part of Business Insider’s ongoing series on Better Capitalism.

My introduction to Chattanooga, Tennessee hinted at what I’d find during my visit there. Mayor Andy Berke, who’s led the city since 2013, visited my New York office in March accompanied by Bellhops CEO Luke Marklin, whose moving company has raised $ 30 million. They told me the story of the city’s startup-fueled revival, and when I visited it in May, for AOL cofounder Steve Case’s “Rise of the Rest” bus trip, I saw that the mayor’s publicity tour alongside a local success story represented a bigger story.

Chattanooga is a fairly small city, with a population of 175,000 — and a greater metro area of more than half a million (Nashville’s population is around 684,000) — but it’s using that to its advantage. After speaking with the mayor, leaders in the chamber of commerce, about a dozen local entrepreneurs and hearing from more, I saw how passionately everyone wants each other to succeed, and how intimately involved the mayor is. George Brown is the founder of Aegle Gear, which wants to be the Under Armour of performance medical scrubs, and he told me that one of the reasons he loves the city is because he can get the mayor on the phone.

TripActions, a comprehensive business travel platform that is reinventing business travel, announced today it has raised $ 51 million in Series B financing led by Arif Janmohamed, Partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners and joined by Oren Zeev of Zeev Ventures. Today’s funding comes as the company continues to see rapid adoption of its next generation corporate travel service that is changing everything about business travel — from how a traveler books a trip and the support a traveler receives when they’re on the road to the full visibility into travel spend savings provided to customers.

Sitting at the nexus of travel and technology, TripActions offers an end-to-end solution that turns a once painful process into a simple and cost-effective option that puts the business traveler’s needs first. Launched two years ago, TripActions has meticulously thought through how technology can improve the entire travel experience. The result: since launching its services in 2016, TripActions has seen the number of customers and travelers under management double every quarter with its bookings growing 12x in 2017. The company has seen 97% traveler adoption of TripActions (the industry norm is 50%) with 97% traveler satisfaction while its customers see an average savings of 27% on their travel spend. Today’s funding bring the total capital raised to just under $ 80 million.

“The current system for business travel is severely broken,” said Ariel Cohen, CEO and Co-Founder of TripActions. “No one has started from the point of view of the road warrior and put them first when building a travel solution. We’re fixing that. Every decision we make puts the needs of the traveler first. In order to deliver outstanding service to our travelers and customers, we need to build custom technology to reinvent infrastructure that hasn’t been updated in decades. With this investment led by Lightspeed, we’re able to scale up TripActions to provide a stronger holistic solution globally for our customers and travelers.”

TripActions’ traveler-first approach can be seen in the services that set TripActions apart from legacy corporate travel solutions:

  • A wide selection of flights, car rentals and hotels which includes inventory that historically has only been found on consumer travel sites and sites specializing in deep discounts
  • A customized booking experience for each traveler which uses machine learning technology to reduce the time to book each trip from hours to a few minutes
  • Custom-build incentive programs which reward the traveler with Amazon gift cards or credits for personal vacation when choosing cost-effective hotel rooms or flights
  • A white-glove support system that gives travelers on the road seamless support in the event something goes wrong during a trip, such as a missed connection. TripActions’ AI-driven platform alerts TripActions’ 24/7 team of agents of an issue and suggests alternatives automatically. In turn, TripActions agents proactively reach out to a traveler via chat, SMS or phone with solutions that get the traveler to their destination as painlessly as possible.

“TripActions’ traveler-first approach is clearly paying off,” said Arif Janmohamed, Partner at Lightspeed. “We have been blown away by the pace of growth we’ve seen at TripActions with rapid adoption from mid-market companies and small businesses alike. There’s no question that companies and travelers are looking for a modern, innovative approach to corporate travel and that they’re ready to switch to something better. By addressing traveler pain points and saving companies substantial money, TripActions is changing this $ 1.5 trillion market.”

TripActions plans to use the new infusion of capital to continue to build out its technology platform and invest in strengthening operations globally.

ESPN looks to reinvent itself with a SportsCenter for Snapchat https://briefnews.eu/espn-looks-to-reinvent-itself-with-a-sportscenter-for-snapchat/ https://briefnews.eu/espn-looks-to-reinvent-itself-with-a-sportscenter-for-snapchat/#respond Mon, 13 Nov 2017 13:13:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/espn-looks-to-reinvent-itself-with-a-sportscenter-for-snapchat/

More than three years ago, ESPN opened a 194,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art production facility known as Digital Center 2. That space was built to house five studios, including the home of its flagship show SportsCenter, which has been airing on TV since 1979. The goal from the beginning was to make the show futureproof, by laying the foundation for its studio to support incoming technologies like 4K and 8K content. It was also set up to handle the rise of social media, what with a wall made of 56 screens giving the anchors’ the ability to interact with Twitter or Facebook posts from athletes in a real-time 3D environment.

The Digital Center 2 brought SportsCenter into the 21st century.

But a lot has changed since 2014. The way people, particularly millennials and younger generations, watch video has shifted dramatically. These days, it’s all about the smartphone, not an immovable TV set. That’s why traditional television networks such as CNN and NBC are creating original programming for Facebook and Snapchat, two platforms that unexpectedly became major players for hosting TV content. And now we can add ESPN to the list of channels looking to adapt to these new mediums.

The company is debuting SportsCenter for Snapchat, a twice-daily show that was made specifically to be viewed through smartphone screens. While it has the same sports news DNA as its namesake, SportsCenter on Snapchat consists of three- to five-minute episodes that are shot in portrait mode, which is obviously the most noticeable change. ESPN will be focusing on a “fast-paced mix of the latest, most engaging stories in sports,” so there’s no need for an hour-long version here.

The pilot episodes honestly don’t even feel like watching SportsCenter; it’s a completely new show. There are interactive cards for news segments that will be a big part of this SportsCenter, each letting you go more into detail about a particular story. That’ll be complemented by colorful imagery, large text overlays and meme-inspired visuals — all the things that Snapchat is known for.

To bring it all together, ESPN is relying on different personalities to host the show, including Katie Nolan and comedian Cy Amund, as well as SportsCenter TV anchor Elle Duncan. The company says it was key to find people “with diverse backgrounds and points of view,” who aren’t wearing a suit or another type of business attire when they’re delivering the news. At launch, there will be a total of six hosts, though ESPN says more will be added to the roster in the future.

SportsCenter on Snapchat will have a 5AM ET morning edition and 5PM ET evening edition. The morning show will be a recap of what happened the night before, while the afternoon episodes are going to be about trending topics that have come up during the day.

Glenn Jacobs, ESPN’s senior coordinating producer of SportsCenter and News, told Engadget there’s also a plan in place for breaking news coverage after the 5PM show. Although most of the content will be recorded early in the day, Jacobs said his team can redo the beginning of a show to include new information and upload an edited version. In theory, that will ensure that Snapchat users don’t miss out on any breaking news stories, like if LeBron James got traded to the Lakers for Lonzo Ball. Or some insane highlight of the day.

Jacobs said the most important aspect of SportsCenter on Snapchat was to make it unique, while staying true to the show’s roots. “This is going to be a sports fan [the host] sharing something cool with another sports fan,” he said. “It’s about how do we share the most interesting things in the world of sports, not just the news?” He said the Snapchat version of the show also needed to “get rid of stereotypes” and not feel like the TV SportsCenter because “if it’s not authentic, people aren’t going to buy it.”

TECHNOLOGY-LOGOS/

Of course, SportsCenter on Snapchat is just the latest example of ESPN trying to adapt and connect with fresh audiences. According to research firm Nielsen, the network’s viewership has been on a steady decline for the last six years, as TV-viewing habits have shifted more toward online streaming. Cord cutters have even driven Disney, ESPN’s parent company, to finally launch a standalone streaming version of the channel in 2018.

Snapchat’s Head of Original Content, Sean Mills, said the idea to make this version of SportsCenter was a mutual one with ESPN. After all, the network has been working closely with Snap since the launch of Discover in 2015, so for Mills the evolution of the relationship felt natural. ESPN told Engadget that the deal is exclusive, meaning you won’t see this version of SportsCenter on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter anytime soon. That may be a bit short sighted on ESPN’s part, given Snapchat’s struggles, which have led the company to plan a huge redesign in hopes of attracting more users.

It’s obvious that ESPN needs Snapchat now more than ever, especially if it wants to find a way to win millennials over. A SportsCenter for Snapchat may not be the answer to all its troubles, but it shows that the network is eagerly looking for ways to stay relevant.

Can Vietnam reinvent itself as an adventure destination? https://briefnews.eu/can-vietnam-reinvent-itself-as-an-adventure-destination/ https://briefnews.eu/can-vietnam-reinvent-itself-as-an-adventure-destination/#comments Fri, 03 Nov 2017 04:11:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-vietnam-reinvent-itself-as-an-adventure-destination/

Yet while numbers overall are on the rise—and adventure operators and infrastructure continue to emerge—the adventure scene is just starting to feel the flow. As Vietnam’s online English-language newspaper VietNamNet Bridge points out, the sector still only accounts for around 10 per cent of the greater pie, with the potential for a far more diverse market remaining largely untapped.

As founder and chairman of Vietnam Bike Tours—one of the first specialized locally owned operators in the region—Ngo Trong Huy has also witnessed the boom, and the potential, firsthand. “We’ve been growing 17-25 per cent a year,” he says. “But in 2017 we have over 10 million foreign visitors—so I think there is still opportunity for more of our kind of [adventure] tourism.”

The figure, as Huy points out, is but a third of neighboring Thailand’s annual 30 million-or-so visitors. While that might seem like something to strive for, the reality is this disparity is probably working in Vietnam’s favor.

According to regional expert Adam Vaught of niche travel specialist Zicasso, Thailand might be the envy of the region numbers-wise, but Vietnam remains top choice for the “savvier traveller.”

“I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but I feel like Vietnam has done a good job of learning from what I would call ‘Thailand’s mistakes,’” he says. “I feel like Thailand’s tourism has developed in the same way Costa Rica’s has, where they both have sacrificed their culture to cater to what tourists want. Over time, it leaves a place feeling very accessible to mass tourists, but lacking authenticity.”

How one company learned to reinvent itself daily in the AI age https://briefnews.eu/how-one-company-learned-to-reinvent-itself-daily-in-the-ai-age/ https://briefnews.eu/how-one-company-learned-to-reinvent-itself-daily-in-the-ai-age/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 23:14:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-one-company-learned-to-reinvent-itself-daily-in-the-ai-age/

Online life insurance agency Haven Life announced an upgrade to its service earlier this week that could let you buy a life insurance policy in just a few minutes after answering about 30 questions — possibly with no medical checkup. That speed of underwriting is made possible by artificial intelligence the two-year-old company has built into its offering.

The company is one example of a new breed of fast-moving businesses built atop AI. It’s difficult to get a good idea of the types of machine learning these companies are building into their products, as they’re giving very little away at this stage. But they’re constantly iterating: testing out new machine-run decision-making processes and then migrating the next part of their business over to those systems once they prove secure.

Haven Life’s upgrade this week is a good example of that kind of iteration. A young, healthy applicant can now get a final decision within about five minutes, no medical or labs required, and buy a policy on the spot. But the company’s underwriting process still isn’t fully automated for all applicants. More complicated cases still need to be looked at by a human underwriter behind the scenes and may require a medical exam. “We’re continuing to lower that percentage [of humans in the loop]” by reassessing the data and rules the service’s AI relies on, CTO Todd Rodgers told VentureBeat.

While fully owned by traditonal life insurance company MassMutual, Haven Life is very much living on the frontier of machine learning. It’s a life of constant rethinking and adaptation, and it requires a new way of conducting business, where the speed of AI advancements dictate the speed of business decisions. “You have to have an appetite for iteration” to succeed with this type of business, Rodgers said. “Going into development with the understanding you’ll never be done is critical.”

And it takes a certain kind of team. “To pull this off, you need people with deep, deep subject matter expertise, you need developers who are interested in the business problem they’re solving, and you need analysts who can intermediate between the two, who can explain an objective in a way that developers know how to codify it,” said Rodgers. He said Haven Life has been lucky to have subject matter experts who are close enough to the data and code that they don’t need the intermediaries. “You also need to be colocated,” Rodgers said, “since you’ll be working together day in day out” on a project that is never finished.

When the company first launched in 2015, it started to pull in third-party data, such as prescription histories, motor vehicle records, and information from the Medical Information Bureau, to assess appropriate life insurance quotes. That didn’t make the company unique. This is data that’s commonly used across the industry, Rodgers said. Where Haven Life innovated was in gradually restructuring that data so that it could be sorted in a highly structured way, allowing the company to run increasingly sophisticated rules and algorithms against it. The more patterns the company has been able to surface in the data, the more rules it has been able to feed to its AI.

With the new update the company announced this week, it is finally cutting over to using the AI output as the primary determining factor for the policy rate. “Before now we’ve always run the algorithm in parallel with a human looking at this too,” said Rodgers. He underscored, though, that human underwriters are still involved in some percentage of cases.

There are seven prescription drugs the company has been able to develop advanced rules for to date. “Each drug takes a lot of analysis. We’d like to expand that out to a larger number of drugs, since each one we add means one more case that we can immediately underwrite [without human involvement],” said Rodgers.

“We’ve gotten to the point where we can ask follow-up questions while the client is still online in the application process based on prescription drug data we’re pulling in in real time,” said Rodgers. “As clients are answering questions, we realize what new information we need and we refine our questions accordingly.” The goal is to optimize on the amount of information the company can glean with just 30 questions.

Haven Life has built its AI in-house over a two-year process of looking at data, consulting with MassMutual’s doctors and its own team of actuaries, and building out rules. It also had the benefit of MassMutual’s data science team and the parent company’s historical data — some 1 million policies going back about 15 years.

When asked why the company hasn’t leveraged any third-party AI tools, Rodgers said, “There are tools you can use. What we’re doing, though, is pretty innovative, so there’s nothing on the market that does exactly what we’re doing. We’re very focused on the ability to be agile and flexible, and a lot of that ability is due to the fact that we’ve built from scratch.”

The reasons ready-built products are something not a good fit? “If you work with a third-party product, I think you’d probably be guided by that product’s view of the world, and it could narrow down your focus,” he said.

Rodgers offered the following advice to other companies deploying advanced machine learning: “If there’s a tool out there that works for you, great. But if not, don’t contort a tool that wasn’t meant for you. And don’t be afraid to build from scratch.”

Haven Life’s dev team, by the way, makes up about 60 of the company’s 110 employees.

We’ve asked Todd Rodgers to facilitate a panel at our VBSummit later this month to dig into the technical challenges of rolling out AI.

Two Silicon Valley billionaires want to reinvent the Democratic Party with a new project called ‘WTF’ https://briefnews.eu/two-silicon-valley-billionaires-want-to-reinvent-the-democratic-party-with-a-new-project-called-wtf/ https://briefnews.eu/two-silicon-valley-billionaires-want-to-reinvent-the-democratic-party-with-a-new-project-called-wtf/#respond Wed, 05 Jul 2017 00:11:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/two-silicon-valley-billionaires-want-to-reinvent-the-democratic-party-with-a-new-project-called-wtf/ reid hoffman“WTF” is a fitting acronym for LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman’s newest project to rethink what the Democratic Party is today.

Called Win The Future, WTF is starting as a “people’s lobby” where people can vote on policy topics that are important to them, like making engineering degrees free for everyone.

“We need a modern people’s lobby that empowers all of us to choose our leaders and set our agenda,” said Mark Pincus, the billionaire cofounder of WTF and Zynga. “Imagine voting for a President we’re truly excited about. Imagine a government that promotes capitalism and civil rights.”

Despite its roots with two powerful tech founders, WTF is taking an old-school approach to start. People will vote on the policies and discuss them on Twitter. The ones that seem to resonate will then be turned into billboards that the group plans to buy in Washington D.C. to make sure Congressional leaders see them.

While it wants to get the attention of members of Congress, WTF is also unabashedly “not for pro-politicians.” According to Recode, one of WTF’s more audacious plans has been to recruit political outsiders to run as “WTF Democrats” and challenge the old stalwarts of the democratic party. One person Pincus targeted specifically has been Stephan Jenkins from the band Third Eye Blind, according to Recode.

Those plans are on hold for now though as it focuses on the launch of its billboard campaigns and building a political platform that’s voiced on the desires of the people — at least those that are active on Twitter.

Already progressive leaders have criticized the launch of WTF as a pet project for two billionaires that’s incredibly off-base, according to a HuffPost report.

“I am not sure the creators of the lamest and the most annoying social media experiences are the exact people who should be rewiring the philosophical core of the Democratic Party as they say they want to,” Alex Lawson, executive director of Social Security Works, told HuffPost.

Despite the early criticism, Pincus and Hoffman have together committed over $ 500,000 to build out the project — and they’re still raising money to bring the billboard campaign to life.

“We can’t wait until elections to fight for what we care about. We can’t hope for a benevolent leader who may choose to listen to us,” Pincus wrote in his note on the vision of WTF. “We need a network that lets the best ideas and leaders rise to the top through an open, inclusive democratic process.”

Can Capitalism Reinvent Itself? https://briefnews.eu/can-capitalism-reinvent-itself/ https://briefnews.eu/can-capitalism-reinvent-itself/#respond Sat, 01 Jul 2017 00:43:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-capitalism-reinvent-itself/ A workforce that that’s built on flexibility and experimentation sounds ideal. People could work a job for as long as they need. They could parcel out their labor into a a traditional nine-to-five, or work a few hours, leaving themselves time to do with as they see fit. Flexible work could help tackle questions of how best to keep parents of young children, adult children of aging parents, and seniors in the workforce in a sustainable way. But while some American jobs have moved toward a system that allows workers and companies greater latitude, the policies at work in the American economy have remained decidedly rigid.

That mismatch is dangerous for workers and their families. In America, crucial benefits, like medical care, retirement savings, unemployment insurance, and disability benefits remain largely tethered to traditional jobs.

The problem isn’t just relevant to those current working in the gig economy, it points to a larger issue: the failings of both the government and private sector to update and reinvent the way workers succeed in the U.S. economy, said Senator Mark Warner of Virginia at the Aspen Ideas Festival, which is co-hosted by the Aspen Institute and The Atlantic.

While jobs at Uber, TaskRabbit, and a host of other sharing-style companies are what might be top of mind, there are plenty of older, traditional industries that are now also employing workers on a less than full-time basis, such as manufacturing. “Everybody now has career paths that are different than their dads were, everyone needs portable benefits, not just sharing economy workers,” said Steve Case, the entrepreneur, chiming in from the audience. On top of the challenges of finding benefits, these workers also face a lack of ongoing investment in the furthering of their careers from both their employers and the government.

Warner advocates for a benefits system that’s more portable, and he also wants workers to have access to education and skill building that can help them move from just-scraping-by to financially comfortable. That, too, could help solve the problem of gaps where jobs are available but there are too few workers with appropriate skills to fit them. Jobs like electricians and various other trade work. “Every politician says they want more carpenters and welders and plumbers, but we don’t really put the policy implications behind it,” Warner said. That’s in part because of the bifurcation between America’s so-called blue-collar and white-collar workers—stratification that is reinforced by massive pay and advancement gaps.

Warner says he doesn’t want that solution for closing those gaps and creating new opportunities for workers to come from the federal government, at least not at first and not directly. “Government doesn’t do a very good job of upscaling people,” Warner said. Instead, he says, the government’s role should be in creating policy incentives for workers to invest in human capital, their employees, in the same way that it incentivizes companies to upgrade their research and development and infrastructure: through tax incentives.

Another solution starts well before mid-career workers stagnate, Warner says: creating improving the education system for teens and young adults who may not be headed to college. He calls that K-through-12.5 education and says that it could be implemented easily with little economic burden.

3 ways retailers are using AI to reinvent shopping https://briefnews.eu/3-ways-retailers-are-using-ai-to-reinvent-shopping/ https://briefnews.eu/3-ways-retailers-are-using-ai-to-reinvent-shopping/#respond Sat, 06 May 2017 02:50:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/3-ways-retailers-are-using-ai-to-reinvent-shopping/

In this new age of ecommerce, marketing means providing a seamless experience across channels, delighting customers with same-day deliveries, providing excellent customer service and recommendations, and sending real-time personalized messages your customers will thank you for.

But personalized commerce isn’t just about big data — it’s about the innovative ways to use that data. Retailers who are proactively working to give their customers the best experience possible are approaching marketing in a totally different manner.

Here are three ways to use artificial intelligence to make your marketing more customer-centric.

1. AI-powered visual search enhances the shopping experience

Visual search has been around for a long time, but with the advancements in artificial intelligence and the rise of mobile commerce, it’s now gaining acceptance with the retailers. The American department store Neiman Marcus uses a Snap. Find. Shop feature that allows customers to take pictures of anything they like and have the app display similar items from the store’s inventory. Neiman Marcus has been able to increase app usage and customer engagement since implementing visual search. Retail brands that are using visual search to improve the online shopping experience include Asos, John Lewis, Shoes.com, Nordstrom, and Urban Outfitters.

Neiman Marcus has deployed another cutting-edge tech, called Memory Mirror, to engage their customers. The technology allows shoppers to digitally compare outfits by capturing a 360-degree view of themselves in an outfit and letting them send those images to friends via email and social media. Memory Mirror is a virtual dressing room, the feature online shoppers miss the most when they skip in-store shopping.

2. AI chatbots are the next big shift in customer service

According to IBM, 65 percent of millennials prefer interacting with bots to talking to live agents, and as we all get more accustomed to it, this number will only go up across all population segments.

The rising popularity of mobile messaging apps and the need for 24/7 service has made chatbots a hit with the e-tailers. Brands are using chatbots for improving customer experience, to offer recommendations and services, and to automate the purchase process.

The most popular chatbot platforms include Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat, and Slack. Top brands like Uber, Burberry, and 1-800-Flowers have been successfully engaging and acquiring new customers with one-to-one chat experience using chatbots.

Chatbots have also turned out to be a big hit with the travel brands. Kayak, Skyscanner, and Expedia have launched bots of their own.

Fashion and beauty brands too are using chatbots to connect with their clients and create a more personalized experience. As per a BI report, “Cosmetic chain Sephora used its lifestyle bot on Kik to get users to complete a survey. The survey had a 40% completion rate, a considerably higher rate than similar campaigns on other platforms.”

Ecommerce is a very competitive landscape. The brands that will thrive in 2017 will be those that will harness the power of new technology to create a more personal experience for customers.

3. AI-powered deep learning offers rich customer insights

Online retailers are poised to master the art of selling by using AI. User data helps them understand customer intent and make intelligent predictions in real time. The machine learning (ML) algorithms are advanced enough to offer personalized recommendations based on varied customer dimensions like behavior, activities, profile data, and so on.

Retailers are also using AI to predict customer behavior. ML algorithms trained on huge data sets are powerful and intuitive enough to drive action out of the big data. AI has leveraged the marketer’s voracious appetite for deeper contextual insights like the best time to send marketing communications, the time when a customer is most likely to buy.

AI also empowers marketers in a multitude of ways, including deep product catalog insights, customer location data, and automatic inventory management, in order to deliver contextual marketing at the most opportune moment. With the advancements in technology, AI is constantly helping marketers connect with their customers in new and meaningful ways.
