  • Much of China’s economic data has been lacking, at least compared to its usual standards.
  • A regional manufacturing activity gauge in China recently stopped being produced and was deemed “illegal” by the central government. It had been significantly weaker than other nationwide activity gauges.
  • There are reports the government wrote to journalists in China this year specifying economic topics that needed to be “managed.”
  • With official data from the government continuing to weaken, the two reports suggest the economy may be even more dire than the government is letting on.

By usual standards, recent Chinese economic data had been somewhat horrendous, continuing to point to a further deceleration in activity after the economy grew at the slowest pace since the GFC in the September quarter.

In the year to November, retail sales grew by 8.1%, the weakest increase since 2003. Industrial output didn’t fare much better, expanding by 5.4% from 12 months earlier, the slowest pace in three years.

“President Trump repeatedly humiliates the Saudis by saying they can’t last 2 weeks without his support. This is the recompense for the delusion that one’s security can be outsourced,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted.

“We again extend our hand to our neighbors: let’s build a ‘strong region’, and stop this conceit,” Iran’s chief diplomat added, just two days after Trump proudly claimed that Saudi security solemnly rests in Washington’s hands.

While there are no American military bases in Saudi Arabia, one of the closest US allies in the region, with which Donald Trump has signed a $ 110 billion arms deal, owes its security to Washington, the US president claimed Tuesday, urging Riyadh and the rest of the ‘rich’ countries to cough up cash for American support.

“I love the King, King Salman. But I said ‘King, we’re protecting you, you might not be there for two weeks without us. You have to pay for your military,’” Trump said at a Mississippi rally in undiplomatic remarks, without specifying when the comments to the monarch had been made.

Trump made similar remarks on Thursday in Minnesota, where he told his Republican supporters that the oil-rich nation should pay for their defense. “I said, ‘excuse me, King Salman’, he is my friend, ‘do you mind paying for the military? Do you mind? Pay!’… I said, ‘do you mind paying?’ ‘But nobody has asked me’, I said ‘but I’m asking you, King,’” the president added, claiming that the monarch had agreed to increase contributions.

While only demanding more monetary contributions from Riyadh, Trump embarked on an open hostility path with Tehran, by slapping sanctions on the country after withdrawing from the cornerstone JCPOA nuclear agreement in May. With more punitive measures due to come into effect November 4, the Islamic Republic seems to be eager to muster any support it can get against the belligerent White House administration.

Washington has traditionally supported the Sunni dominant actors in the Gulf and has established a strong military foothold in the region, basing the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, a large Air Force contingent in Qatar, in addition to troops that are deployed in Kuwait and Jordan. The only exceptions to the rule are Iraq, where sectarian violence is rife between Shia and Sunnis, and Oman, where the majority of the population belongs to the Ibadi school.

Iran and Saudi Arabia are notorious regional rivals in a decades-long feud fueled by religious differences. Iran, a largely Shia Muslim country, has been challenging Saudi Sunni power across the region by supporting opposing sides in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen. The rivalry also stretches to other parts of the Middle East and their support for different political factions in Iraq and Lebanon.

Following a deadly attack on a military parade in southern Iran, the country’s foreign minister said that regional sponsors of terrorism and their “US masters” are to be held accountable for such assaults.

Top Iranian diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif vowed to respond “swiftly and decisively” after gunmen opened fire in Ahvaz on Saturday leading to multiple casualties. The minister claimed that the terrorists were sponsored and trained by “a foreign regime.”

Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable for such attacks.

The carnage has claimed the lives of up to 24 people, Iran’s state-run Irna news agency says, adding that over 50 people were killed.

According to the outlet, the assault has been carried out by the “Patriotic Arab Democratic Movement in Ahwaz” group. “These terrorists… were trained and organised by two … Gulf countries,” Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said.

On Saturday, Iran was holding parades in several cities, including the capital Tehran, commemorating the end of the eight-year Iran-Iraq conflict.

Russian citizens go to the polls on Sunday to elect the heads of 22 regions, including the mayor of the capital, Moscow. They will also elect lawmakers in 16 regional legislatures and thousands of municipal councils.

The Moscow mayoral elections are probably the most important event of election day, with five candidates running for the post, including incumbent Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. The other candidates in the race are billionaire real estate developer Mikhail Balakin; lower house MP representing the populist-nationalist Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia, Mikhail Degtyarev; Communist Party candidate Vadim Kunin; and Ilya Sviridov, who represents the center-left party Fair Russia.

Four Russian regional capitals – Yakutsk, Abakan, Khabarovsk and Tomsk – will also hold mayoral polls on the national elections day.

Seven constituencies across the country will also hold by-elections to fill vacant seats in the State Duma, and voters will elect members to 16 regional legislatures and around 6,000 municipal councils.

Earlier this week, the Russian Central Election Commission opened a special information center to cover the events taking place on the single elections day. One of the commission members, Aleksandr Klyukin, has said that 893 journalists from 33 mass media outlets had received accreditation for the center, including 17 reporters from four foreign-based media organizations.
