Last week, Drake smashed the single-day record for total number of album streams on Spotify with the release of his new record Scorpion, but the artist had some help in making that happen. Spotify placed Drake prominently on its playlists, effectively allowing the artist to “take over” the music service over the weekend. While Drake fans were likely pleased, others weren’t exactly thrilled about this turn of events. Some premium subscribers even went as far to demand refunds from Spotify for the service’s placement of advertisements on accounts that are supposed to be ad-free.

Billboard reports that disgruntled fans have been requesting refunds from the service. Some have met with success; a few of those who were denied have gone as far as to cancel their accounts. Spotify told Billboard that complaints were minimal and as a result, there is no official refunds policy for this promotion.
Many of Spotify’s users rely on the service’s curation for the playlists they listen to. The more you listen to on Spotify, the better your recommendations and playlists become. The question is whether it’s appropriate for the service to introduce this kind of blatant marketing into its playlists, allowing the promotion to override users’ preferences. It’s the first one that Spotify has ever done, and the service will likely be thinking hard about whether to repeat the effort.

Imagine getting an automatic refund on things you already own. For instance, you got a coffee maker for $ 70, and you really love it, but since then the in-store price has dropped to $ 50, so the powers-that-be have gone ahead and sent $ 20 back into your bank account.
You still have a coffee maker that you love (that you were willing to spend $ 70 on), but now it just got $ 20 cheaper, and without any effort at all on your part.
That would be how easy “price matching” would be if the process was seamless. It’s also how price matching is in reality if you use Paribus, a great — and totally free — tool that tracks your purchases and facilitates refunds on your behalf when there’s a price drop at a participating retailer.
While most stores offer price matching (and many of the big retailers Americans shop at are included in this), far fewer of us want to commit to tracking our purchases to see which ones are eligible for money back. And because no store is going to alert you to say they might owe you money for something you already bought, it is a process that requires vigilance and dedication on your part. (You might have to regularly check in on prices and then call customer service and listen to tinny classical music for a while). For the chance at a few dollars back, this normally is not worth the trouble. Since it requires so much active engagement from you for money that you already spent (and is already “lost” to you now), almost no one takes advantage of such a common, ridiculously nice retail perk, even though those few dollars back on every purchase would eventually amount to enough money to matter.
Paribus removes all of these roadblocks to claiming eligible refunds by doing all of the legwork for you.
Simply sign up online, or download the free app, and link your email by signing in through your email provider and clicking “yes” to grant the tool access to your emails. After that, Paribus will track the purchases you make to see if any of them experience a price drop at participating merchants. For instance, if the coffee maker drops from $ 70 to $ 50, Paribus will detect it, contact their customer service to facilitate a refund on your behalf, and then automatically send you the difference. You can also link your Amazon account too if you like — while they don’t participate in price drop refunds, you might be eligible for compensation if an order arrives late.
By virtue of working off of your emails, you’ll have to be comfortable sacrificing some privacy, but if the convenience is worth that to you, then you’ll be happy with how Paribus performs. The online interface is easy to use, and you’ll be able to find all the things you’ve bought and which Paribus is tracking in the “My Purchases” section of your dashboard.
While the service used to take a percentage of refunds, it is now completely, 100% free. You shop as usual, they check for price drops or late deliveries, and they’ll get you 100% of the difference back. Not to mention that the constant stream of price drops shown and notifications about “this week’s top save” and otherwise can help you find deals without even searching.
Though Paribus is a valuable financial tool at any time, it’s particularly primed to be helpful during the holiday season. You’ll likely be spending more than normal on gifts, and you’ll also likely have less time to price match. On top of that, many popular items see drastic price fluctuation, particularly once the big shopping craze dies down and discounts start rolling in to help attract shoppers post-holidays.
If getting money back on things you already bought (without any heavy lifting or really any interaction on your part at all) sounds good, you might want to give Paribus a try.

In a scandal that extended wider than was previously known, Wells Fargo said it would offer refunds to tens of thousands of customers who were improperly charged fees on home mortgages.
ProPublica first reported earlier this year that the bank was chiseling customers by making them pay to extend interest rates on loans even when the delays were the bank’s fault.
Current and former employees said at the time that the practice was especially prevalent in the Los Angeles area and Oregon.
As it turns out, about 10 percent of the affected mortgages were in those two regions, and the rest were scattered nationwide, according to a person familiar with the issue. A Wells Fargo spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment.
As is typical in home loans, Wells Fargo allowed customers to lock in a promised mortgage rate for a given period of time. When a deadline for mortgage paperwork was missed, a fee would be incurred. Even when the bank was responsible for the delay, management frequently forced loan officers to blame the customers and charge them. The fees were typically about $ 1,000 to $ 1,500, depending on the size of the loan.
Wells Fargo estimates that about 110,000 borrowers between Sept. 16, 2013, and February 28, 2017, were assessed $ 98 million in mortgage interest-rate-lock extension fees. Without specifying the number of victims, it said that not all of those customers were charged improperly. Before Sept. 16, 2013, the bank had paid all rate-lock extension fees.
The bank has been conducting an internal review, and has let go several top mortgage executives. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s investigationinto the practice continues.
Wells Fargo has been dogged by numerous scandals, regulatory action and Congressional scrutiny in recent years. In September 2016, it was fined $ 185 million for illegally opening as many as 2 million deposit and credit card accounts without customers’ knowledge.

More than 5,000 Americans are about to get a check in the mail, after regulators discovered that a Florida-based supplement maker was peddling an herbal drink mix that it claimed could help treat addiction.
The company, Sunrise Nutraceuticals, marketed its Elimidrol powdered drink mix as having a “high success rate … in overcoming opiate withdrawal” and said it could help people “leave addiction behind permanently,” according to a statement from the Federal Trade Commission.
But the product, which Sunrise sold online by the tub for $ 75, contained no ingredients that have been scientifically proven to help with drug withdrawal or addiction symptoms. Instead, it was composed mainly of herbal extracts like lemon balm, ginger root, ginseng, and magnolia bark, plus a handful of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins B and C.
The FTC sued Sunrise for making “deceptive claims” and is sending refund checks totaling more than $ 210,000 to people who bought Elimidrol, many of whom may have been using the product to help treat addictions to opioid painkillers.
“Opiate addiction has taken a tremendous toll on the American public,” Jessica Rich, the Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement. “By peddling their unproven product, these defendants have prevented people from seeking legitimate treatment.”
Sunrise NutraceuticalsSunrise is one of hundreds of supplement makers that have been sued by the FTC for allegedly making bogus health claims.
While supplements might sound harmless, many are unnecessary, misleading, or even dangerous. The $ 37-billion dollar supplement industry is largely unregulated; the agencies who oversee it are confined mainly to reacting once a supplement is found to have hurt someone or severely misled them. As a result, pills and powders that are found to be linked with negative conditions like cancer or kidney stones may only get recalled after they’ve lingered on grocery shelves for months.
“In the US, no dietary supplements are pre-screened for safety and efficacy,” S. Bryn Austin, a professor of behavioral sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told Business Insider. “What that means is the FDA and consumers have no way to know if what’s in the bottle or box is what’s on the label. There’s no way to know for sure that what’s in the product is safe.”
The FTC case against Sunrise is part of the agency’s ongoing work with the Food and Drug Administration to protect consumers from misleading health advertising. If you think a claim on a dietary supplement is false, you can report it to the FTC. If you’ve had an adverse reaction to a supplement, you can report it to the FDA.

The Barcelona terrorist attacks on Las Ramblas on Thursday night shocked the world; the official death toll is currently on 14, and hundreds more injured.
Understandably, tourists might feel uneasy about an impending trip to the Spanish city.
But travellers looking to cancel their trip – and expect a refund from the flight or travel company – could be in for a shock.
Unless tourists have already opted for a terror add-on to their travel insurance, it’s unlikely they will be covered for cancellations in the wake of an attack.
It’s reported that a tour operator is only legally obliged to offer a full refund or alternative holiday if the Government – more specifically, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office – advices against visiting a destination.
Spain has not been put on this list.
It clearly states on the FCO website that terrorists are “likely” to try to carry out attacks in Spain and that attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners.
Putting this into perspective, the current threat level for international terrorism in the UK is severe.
Malcolm Tarling of the Assosciation of British Insurers told the Telegraph: “While some travel insurance policies may cover cancellation if the Government advises against it, you may not be covered if you decide against travelling when there is no advice not to do so.
“Travel insurance will cover any emergency medical treatment needed if caught up in an attack. If you are in or are planning got visit an area where an attack has occurred follow advice from the UK government.”
ESure – one of Britain’s biggest insurance companies – explains its travel insurance policy in terms of cancellation due to terrorist activity quite plainly on its website.
It states that cancellation on the grounds of war or terrorism isn’t covered by their standard travel insurance policy.
Official advice from the insurer reads: “Unfortunately, terrorists operate in a large proportion of the world and advising, for this reason, against travel to all these countries would inhibit world travel and disrupt normal life.
“It’s worth noting that the risk of being involved in a terrorist attack is very small, especially where the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is taken.”
Despite this it’s reported that EasyJet are offering any passenger not wishing to travel on flights to or from Barcelona in the next 48 hours – from yesterday – can change their flight with no change fee.
Despite this, the airline assured passengers headed to Barcelona that flights will operate as normal.
A spokesman for EasyJet said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims of the incident in Barcelona on August 17.
“The safety and security of its passengers and crews is always EasyJet’s highest priority.
“Our schedule is operating as normal, however we would advise that all passengers due to fly with us to or from Barcelona today check the status of their flight on our Flight Tracker page.”
The same can be said for Ryanair who issued a statement saying: “Our thoughts are with all of those affected by the events in Barcelona today.
“Our flights are operating as scheduled and we will inform customers of any further travel updates.”
In short, the answer is no. Standard travel insurance packages don’t always cover terrorist attacks.
If you’re worried about terrorist-related incidents on holiday, make sure your insurance package includes a terrorism-related clause before purchasing a policy.
Some will allow you to cancel and receive a refund – although there can be several caveats/
Worried tourists can buy an add-on policy – Safe Journey offers such a package. This includes up to £2,000 refund if you choose to cancel the trip you have booked.
Again, certain conditions apply – full details are available on the Safe Journey website.
Cover extends worldwide except for travel to, or from, or through these countries: Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Sudan and North Korea.
Did you buy a low-cost pair of eclipse glasses hoping to watch the August 21st solar eclipse without spending a fortune? Amazon might be reaching out to you. The company has confirmed a recent Verge report that it’s “proactively” refunding purchases of eclipse glasses that might not meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standards needed to protect your eyes. It also appears to be pulling product listings for those glasses to be on the safe side.
It won’t shock you to hear the reason why Amazon is taking the initiative: as with its reaction to unsafe hoverboards, it’s exhibiting an “abundance of caution.” The last thing Amazon wants is thousands of customers damaging their eyesight with sub-par glasses bought from its store, especially if the manufacturers falsely claim to meet safety standards.
As before, you’ll want to be sure that any pair of glasses meets those ISO standards before making a purchase. That’s not always easy, but the American Astronomical Society has a list of solar viewer brands and vendors if there’s any doubt. Amazon notably isn’t on that list yet — however, this new crackdown supports the AAS’ claims that the internet giant is making a “good-faith effort” to clean up its act.
