Ryanair has been called on to refund passengers affected by a name-change penalty in a letter from money saving expert Martin Lewis to Michael O’Leary, the Chief Executive of Ryanair. Lewis has presented the Chief Executives of Ryanair and its regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), with a dossier of over 160 Ryanair passengers hit by the name-change ‘glitch,’ costing many customers £115 each to fix. MoneySavingExpert.com first reported the issue in December 2018 and has since received complaints from angry customers travelling with partners or friends with different surnames. They said they have been penalised after their companions’ surnames were automatically changed even though the correct details were entered at the time of booking.

If they didn’t spot the error within Ryanair’s 24-hour grace period, they were slapped with a £115 charge to change it in order to travel.

According to Lewis, Ryanair “has insisted that there isn’t a problem despite compelling evidence, and has said it won’t refund customers for what appears to be its own mistake.”

In the letter itself, Lewis wrote: “The engagement and response we’ve had from Ryanair has been flaccid; there seems to be a blasé attitude to these customers who feel hard done by.”

He added: “The behaviour of your firm, in refusing to refund customers who have been affected, yet with them having no choice but to pay up if they want to travel, does not seem to be the behaviour of a ‘nice airline’.

“I am sure you will be shocked to hear this is happening- and will want to rectify it – rather than waiting for regulatory engagement.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Ryanair for further comment on the situation.

Ryanair passengers have recently dubbed the budget airline the worst in the UK in a scathing Which? survey.

It marks the sixth consecutive year the firm has been granted the derogatory title by the consumer champion watchdog.

Passenger gripes ranged from seat comfort, food and drink options and boarding process, all of which received the lowest possible ratings.

The totals showed a dismal customer service score of 40 per cent – with many vehemently claiming they will not fly in the bright blue and white planes again.

More than 70 per cent of those grilled were adamant they would not plump for the airline, with fellow budget options easyJet and Jet2 getting the nod.

The low-cost airline has recently – and quietly – increased their hand luggage charges just two months after strict new rules were introduced in November.

Previously, passengers who wanted to bring more luggage had to pay £6 extra to benefit from priority boarding, which they could bring both a small bag and a larger bag for the overhead locker.

Ryanair travellers could also pay to take a suitcase on board that measured no more than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. It couldn’t more than 10kg and would be left at the airport drop desk. Previously this check-in bag cost £8 during booking or £10 after booking.

However, passengers booking now will find, after going through the flight selection process, that priority boarding has increased by £2 to £8.

Meanwhile, the extra 10kg suitcase will now cost £10 during booking.

These new sums can only be seen once flights have been selected. Ryanair’s cabin bag policy page continues to show the prices of ‘From £6’ for priority and ‘From £8’ for the 10kg bag.

Epic’s updated game store refund policy matches Steam https://briefnews.eu/epics-updated-game-store-refund-policy-matches-steam/ https://briefnews.eu/epics-updated-game-store-refund-policy-matches-steam/#respond Sun, 13 Jan 2019 12:53:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/epics-updated-game-store-refund-policy-matches-steam/

The Epic Games Store wasn’t all that refund-friendly on launch. You could only ask for two refunds in an entire year (albeit after unlimited hours of play), and you had to submit details like your IP address in a support ticket to have a hope of getting your money back. It should be easier from now on, at least. According to Epic’s Sergey Galyonkin, the company has updated its refund policy to allow unlimited refunds as long as they’re within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of play time. You still have to submit a support request for now (there’s a “self-service” option coming), but you no longer have to provide a bevy of information so long as the refund meets the criteria.

If this sounds familiar, it should — the time window is the same as Steam’s refund policy. Galyonkin added later that he preferred the initial approach, since “most people” don’t refund more than two games per year but that some games’ problems weren’t apparent before the two-hour mark. The company switched because it was “too hard to communicate” that approach, he argued. Of course, this approach also left you out of luck if you did need a third refund, and likely wasn’t going to please regulators who’ve wanted consistent refund options.

The change in policy comes shortly after complaints about the quality of Epic’s support (most of it before the Games Store), although it’s not believed to be in response to those concerns. The Better Business Bureau had given Epic a symbolic “F” for allegedly ignoring most BBB complaints in 2018, including refund and exchange issues. The developer referred those disputes to its player support team, but there have been questions about the BBB’s objectivity. It only gives accreditation to companies that pay its annual fees, and Epic isn’t one of them. It’s difficult to say for sure whether or not Epic has been as negligent as claimed, and its new refund policy might indirectly address some of those worrie.

Nintendo is going to court over its refund policy https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-is-going-to-court-over-its-refund-policy/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-is-going-to-court-over-its-refund-policy/#respond Wed, 19 Dec 2018 14:46:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendo-is-going-to-court-over-its-refund-policy/

Apparently, Germany agrees with Norway: Nintendo’s no-refund pre-order policy isn’t only harsh, it’s also illegal under European law. According to Eurogamer, the German Consumer Protection Authority is taking Nintendo to court over a policy that doesn’t allow pre-order cancellations, even if the game hasn’t been released yet and even if you still haven’t downloaded it. In short, all sales, including pre-purchases, are final — and, yes, Nintendo of America has the same rule.

The Norwegian Consumer Council first spoke out against the policy in early 2018, but the complaint reached Germany because that’s where Nintendo of Europe is based. The Council wrote an open letter to Nintendo, part of which reads:

“According to the right of withdrawal laid down in the Consumer Rights Directive, such terms are illegal. Until the game can be downloaded and launched, the seller cannot prohibit the consumer from cancelling their pre-order.”

That time, the NCC examined seven digital gaming platforms, but only two of them have good enough refund rules and processes to earn the council’s approval. It’s going after Nintendo, though, because its rules are apparently the worst. Sony allows you to get a refund for pre-orders ever after their release date, so long as you haven’t downloaded or streamed them yet. Microsoft will also refund you for pre-purchases before they’re released.

Out of the seven, only EA’s Origin and Steam’s Valve passed muster. Steam, after all, will give you a full refund even if you’ve already played the game for an hour or so. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s e-shop doesn’t even allow you to pre-order a title unless you waive your right to get your money back. You’d have to check a box that reads: “I consent that Nintendo begins with the performance of its obligations before the cancellation period ends. I acknowledge that I thereby lose my right to cancel.”

Nintendo defended its policy in the past by citing article 16 of the 2011/83 European Consumer Law Directive (PDF), which lists all the exceptions from the right of withdrawal. The first entry in the list says consumers can’t withdraw from a deal “if the performance has begun with the consumer’s prior express consent, and with the acknowledgement that he will lose his right of withdrawal once the contract has been fully performed by the trader.” Norwegian publication PressFire says the proceedings will begin within the next three to four weeks.

Elton John tour CANCELLED: How to get refund of tickets after Elton John cancels tour https://briefnews.eu/elton-john-tour-cancelled-how-to-get-refund-of-tickets-after-elton-john-cancels-tour/ https://briefnews.eu/elton-john-tour-cancelled-how-to-get-refund-of-tickets-after-elton-john-cancels-tour/#respond Wed, 28 Nov 2018 09:33:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/elton-john-tour-cancelled-how-to-get-refund-of-tickets-after-elton-john-cancels-tour/

Elton John, 71, was scheduled to perform in Orlando Tuesday night, but the sold-out crowd was informed half an hour after showtime the concert had been canceled. Amway Center, where the concert was due to take place took to Twitter to spread the news: “We’re sorry to announce that due to an ear infection, Elton John is unable to perform tonight.”

How to get a refund

Fans have been told to keep their tickets and that the show will be rescheduled in “the near future”.

Amway Centre said: “The rescheduled Orlando date will be announced in the near future so please hold onto your tickets.”

However, according to thinkmoney.com if the organisers of the concert cancel and you bought tickets through an official seller you should be able to get a refund.

The same is true if they move it to a different date and you can’t go anymore.

The website read: “The organisers or the ticket company should give you this money back automatically – it usually goes straight onto the card you bought the tickets with.

“If you don’t get a refund, it might be worth looking on the organisers’ website – you might have to claim the money back yourself.”

After the Elton John concert was dismissed rumours emerged there had been a bomb threat, replying to a Twitter user: “Mike, there was never a bomb threat.

“As we have stated from the outset, tonight’s show was canceled due to an ear infection.

“All other explanations are unfounded.

“The new Orlando and Tampa dates will be announced in the near future.”

Fans voiced their frustrations on Twitter.

One concertgoer wrote: “Tickets to @eltonofficial: way too expensive That feeling when they tell you the show is canceled 30 mins after the show was supposed to start: (angry emoji).”

Sir Elton’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, said to be his last, had already caused a stir among fans for the price of its tickets.

Some fans paid as much as £520 for tickets to the UK leg of the tour in 2019 and 2020.

The concert is said to be the “Candle in the Wind” singer’s last.

Tesla has asked some of its suppliers for refunds in order to help it reach its profitability goal, the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend, citing a memo sent to a supplier last week.

The memo, from a global supply manager, said the cash back was “essential to Tesla’s continued operation,” the WSJ said, telling the supplier to consider the refund an investment in the company’s long-term health.

UK may want a refund if it’s cut out of Galileo GPS project https://briefnews.eu/uk-may-want-a-refund-if-its-cut-out-of-galileo-gps-project/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-may-want-a-refund-if-its-cut-out-of-galileo-gps-project/#respond Fri, 25 May 2018 15:14:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-may-want-a-refund-if-its-cut-out-of-galileo-gps-project/

Earlier this year, the European Commission revealed that Brexit might jeopardize the UK’s involvement in the Galileo project, which is Europe’s endeavor to build a their own version of America’s GPS system. Now, Reuters reports that Britain may demand its money back if it is indeed cut out of the Galileo project.

The UK, which leaves the EU next Thursday, was heavily involved in the development of the Galileo project and invested up to 1 billion pounds in it. But now, the issue is security. If a non-EU country is granted full access to Galileo, it could be considered a security risk. The backup site for monitoring Galileo has already been moved from the UK to Spain.

Britain has presented the EU with its terms for continuing to participate in the project. It’s unclear what those encompass, but a senior EU official told Reuters that there is no basis for Britain’s demand for a refund. At this point, it seems unlikely that the UK will be granted full access to Galileo’s data, and that whatever involvement it does have will be restricted.

Martin Lewis: Get a £570 refund on your energy bill by doing THIS simple money back trick https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-get-a-570-refund-on-your-energy-bill-by-doing-this-simple-money-back-trick/ https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-get-a-570-refund-on-your-energy-bill-by-doing-this-simple-money-back-trick/#respond Mon, 14 May 2018 13:11:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-get-a-570-refund-on-your-energy-bill-by-doing-this-simple-money-back-trick/

Martin Lewis, 45, also known as MSE or Money Saving Expert, appeared on This Morning to explain how you can get a refund of £570 on your energy bill.

He explained that anyone who pays a monthly direct debit may be eligible for this refund – and it’s easy to find out.

He said: “With winter long gone (at least via the calendar), this is the perfect time for those who pay energy by monthly direct debit, which is the vast majority, to check if you’ve got too much credit.

This is because energy firms estimate your usage, and then bill you based on their estimates. If those are set too high you can end up overpaying.

Only do this if you’ve been providing regular meter readings, or have a smart meter doing it for you.

“If not, send them a meter reading. Assuming all is up to date go online or call up to check whether you are in credit and if so how much.

“Direct debits are meant to smooth out your usage over the year so normally you’re in surplus going into winter and in deficit after.

“So right now if your credit is more than a month’s worth of bills, ask them for the amount over that back – it can be £100s, and ask them to lower the direct debit going forward.”

He cited an example of one of his followers who gained a £570 refund on their bill after performing a simple check.

He also explained a number of other ways to get a refund, and how to find out if you qualify.

Over 1million are owed a refund on Power of Attorney registration fees

“A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows you, while you still have the mental capacity to do so, to nominate a trusted friend or relative to look after your affairs if you lose capacity. And they’re not just for the elderly, I have one, I’m 45.

“Yet if you already got one, and did it between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017 in England and Wales, you paid £110 for them, which is more than it should’ve been, so if you did that you’re owed up to £54 per power of attorney (which includes 0.5% annual interest).

“To claim a refund go to www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney-refund or call the Office of the Public Guardian on 0300 456 0300 and select option six. You’ll need details (incuding bank details) of the person who it was set up for and the name of one of the attorneys.

“I’m swamped with people telling me how easy it is, like Barbara who tweeted me: “@MartinSLewis Thanks to you, I have £75.42 back. How else would I have known about this?”

Are you married? If so, you may be due a free £900

“Three years ago, the Government launched the marriage (and civil partnerships) tax allowance. It applies where one is a basic-rate taxpayer and the other a non-taxpayer.

“The non-taxpayer can apply to have 10% (£1,190) of their tax-free allowance shifted to the taxpayer. This means £1,190 of income they were taxed on at 20% is now tax-free – a £238 gain this year done via altering your tax code.

“Yet still over 1 million eligible couples are missing out. And you can back claim a refund to when it started too, so that’s a cheque for £662 – making a total of £900. It takes five minutes to do at www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance/how-to-apply – it’s the non-taxpayer who must apply.

As Michelle who tweeted: “@MartinSLewis just applied for the marriage tax allowance and it took 2 mins to get over £600. #thankyou.”

Last month, Martin Lewis explained how to get a £1,990 refund from your bank with an easy trick.

Martin explained many will have been upsold what is known as a packaged bank account, which come with a fee and in some cases have been missold. Some customers who have been left in the dark about these accounts may be entitled to a refund, he said.

“if you were sold one, check if it’s worth it or if you’re eligible for the benefits,” he said.

Martin Lewis: Get a £1,990 refund from your bank with this easy trick – are YOU eligible? https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-get-a-1990-refund-from-your-bank-with-this-easy-trick-are-you-eligible/ https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-get-a-1990-refund-from-your-bank-with-this-easy-trick-are-you-eligible/#respond Thu, 26 Apr 2018 11:00:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-get-a-1990-refund-from-your-bank-with-this-easy-trick-are-you-eligible/

Martin Lewis, 45, also known as Money Saving Expert or MSE, appeared on Good Morning Britain today to tell viewers how they could get a refund of thousands from their bank.

Martin explained many will have been upsold what is known as a packaged bank account, which come with a fee.

These bank accounts include insurance policies, but some people opening these accounts do not know what they are and may not need the policies, he said.

“Some bank accounts aren’t really bank accounts they’re packages of insurance with a bank account pegged on.

“These are known as packaged bank accounts and they have a fee.

“For many who are upsold them without need, they’re a waste of cash and you should go for fee free banking,” he warned.

Some customers who have been left in the dark about these accounts may be entitled to a refund, he said.

“if you were sold one, check if it’s worth it or if you’re eligible for the benefits. If so, great,” he said.

“If not, cancel, and see Martin’s ‘Reclaim package bank accounts for free’ guide to see if you were mis-sold as the practice has been rife over recent years.

Some get £1,000s back, such as Muriel who emailed “’I had a packaged account for 11 years that I was mis-sold – ended up getting a refund of £1,990.’”

Martin later went on to explain that, for some, packaged bank accounts might actually be a good idea.

He said: “If you’d be shelling out for the insurance anyway they can be a winner.

“In recent times, Nationwide and Halifax have been vying for top spot, but now Halifax is hiking its fees from £15/mth to £17/mth on 1 July.

“The key is to work out which of these policies you would normally buy separately and add up how much they cost per year, then compare to simply paying the annual fee.

“So for most people now, the top pick is Nationwide’s FlexPlus account which has a £13 a month fee, and gives world family travel insurance (including business, winter sports and golf cover) up to age 74, family smartphone insurance (so covers all living at home) and European breakdown cover for you in any car.

“A family of four needing all this could pay at the extreme end £700 a year separately (though even £400 worth is good value) so this is a good deal if you’re going to use it. Plus you get 3 per cent AER variable on balances up to £2,500, and extended warranty on new-ish electrical goods.”

Last week, Martin Lewis revealed how to get free cash through in minutes.

The finance whizz advised that First Direct, which has “won every customer service poll I’ve ever done”, is offering the money to switching customers.

He said: “First Direct has won every customer service poll I’ve ever done, and I’ve done them a lot, it’s over 90 per cent great. And for over ten years it has paid new customers an introductory sign up bonus.

“Yet the current £100 (you can get more via some comparison sites – see Martin’s top bank accounts guide for more) First Direct 1st account offer ends on Monday at 11:59pm, and it has yet to confirm what is coming afterwards.

“The mood music on that isn’t good – it is my suspicion it may well be changing its cash offering, so if you want certainty you’ll get that, go now.”

  • Your IRS tax refund will typically be available within 21 days if you file electronically.
  • Filing taxes electronically with direct deposit ensures the refund gets to your bank account quicker, the IRS says.
  • The IRS has resources to help you file your taxes and get your refund quickly.

Most people dread filing their taxes — but nearly everyone is hoping for a refund. Procrastinators have a couple of extra days to file their return this year, as Tax Day falls on April 17 instead of the standard April 15.

The Internal Revenue Service reports that about 83% of tax returns result in refunds. If you’re one of the lucky ones who can expect to get money back this year, you may be wondering exactly when you will receive your refund.

Martin Lewis: Claim a council tax refund of £10,000 with THIS simple trick https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-claim-a-council-tax-refund-of-10000-with-this-simple-trick/ https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-claim-a-council-tax-refund-of-10000-with-this-simple-trick/#respond Mon, 19 Mar 2018 13:56:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-claim-a-council-tax-refund-of-10000-with-this-simple-trick/

Martin Lewis, 45, also known as the MSE or Money Saving Expert, advised viewers on the best way to reduce their council tax bill, through checking if they are eligible for certain discounts. He announced this ahead of council tax rises which are expected to occur early next month.

Appearing on This Morning, he said: “On 6 April, council tax is likely to rise for almost every council across England, Scotland and Wales – by typically 3 per cent which would be around £50 a year for a band D property, but for some councils it could be nearly double that.

“So it’s a poignant point for everyone to check they’re not overpaying for council tax,” he said, outlining the checks people should do ahead of this rise.”

“Are you entitled to a discount? This could be the single person’s discount of 25 per cent which applies where there’s only one qualifying adult in the property (eg one adult with children, or with full-time students).

“Those with a serious mental impairment such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and who are eligible for certain benefits may also be disregarded for council tax purposes. Sadly as this is little know, it’s worth researching.

“There can also be council tax discounts for those on pension credit. Are you in the wrong band? I believe up to 400,000 homes in England and Wales are on the wrong council tax band altogether and have been overpaying for years, so you could be owed money back.

“That’s because for many, your council tax band still depends on a ‘2nd gear valuation’ – where back in 1991 valuers drove past houses in second gear with a checklist and allocated bands. This logic was flawed, and means many houses were wrongly banded.

If you are in the wrong band you are not just entitled to a reduction now, but going back to when you moved in (or 1993 whichever is more recent).

“Like Eric who emailed me saying “Having seen your article I discovered that I had been incorrectly banded and applied for a rebate. It was rejected initially and I followed your advice on how to proceed.

“Four weeks later my Local Authority reimbursed almost £9,500 which was a very welcome top up for our pension.”

Martin Lewis’ council tax check

“This is about a two-step check and challenge system I invented in 2007. For full help see Martin’s full council tax check & challenge tool and guide but in a nutshell…

“Step 1: Neighbours Check. See if you’re in a higher band than neighbours in identical properties (you can see their band via the VOA in England & Wales, and the SAA in Scotland).

“Step 2. Valuation Check. Then work out what your house price was in 1991 – when council tax bands were defined – as a belt and braces check. You do this by looking up a recent valuation of a similar property then using a house price calculator to work out what it was worth back in 1991.

“The whole point of the two steps is that you may be in a higher band than your neighbours because theirs is too low, and by applying, theirs could be put up. That’s why there are two checks. Only considering asking for an assessment if you clearly pass BOTH.”

He also warned about the price of stamps increasing next week. He said: “First and second class stamps increasing by 2p. From next Monday (26 March) the price of a first-class stamp for a standard letter will increase from 65p to 67p, and to 56p to 58p for a second-class stamp. For a large letter the cost will go up by 3p to £1.01 (first-class) and to 79p (second-class).

“As stamps just say 1st or 2nd on them (Or 1st or 2nd large for the bigger ones) if you buy them now they are valid in perpetuity after. So while it’s only pennies, if you’re going to send, even a big batch of Christmas cards, you may as well stock up now.”
