If you’ve been wondering what Paul Giamatti has been up to lately (since that’s clearly a thought that crosses everyone’s minds every once in a while), the answer is apparently, “Making multiple seasons of the Showtime drama Billions.” The show’s third season is about to debut, and the network has released a new trailer teasing the high stakes scheming between Giamatti’s character and his rival, who’s played by Damian Lewis.

And while they’re at it, Showtime has also released a new featurette for the seventh season of Homeland, which features stars Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin, and more talking about how the new season “seems to have become more of a Polaroid of the world we’re living in.” Watch both videos below.

Billions season 3 trailer

I subscribed to Showtime last year solely so I could watch Twin Peaks: The Return and then immediately unsubscribed, so I didn’t have time to catch up with Billions, a show that has somehow been running for two years already. (The insanity of last year truly destroyed my concept of time.) But for those who are all caught up and on the edge of your seats waiting to find out what happens in season three, here’s the official synopsis:

Season three of Billions finds Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti) and Bobby Axelrod (Lewis) in a world that has shifted on its axis. Both men are still determined to destroy the other, but must also battle for their own survival amid new forces and powerful enemies. Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff) Chuck’s wife and Axe’s performance coach, is all in for both of them, an uneasy and dangerous position for her, and one that ultimately puts her to a decision that could alter the direction of her life irrevocably. Money, power, justice and revenge are all on the line for each of these characters as well as for the rest of the stellar cast, including Malin Akerman, Toby Leonard Moore, David Costabile, Condola Rashad, Asia Kate Dillon and Jeffrey DeMunn.

Billions returns to Showtime on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 10pm.

Homeland season 7 featurette

I bailed on Homeland after season 3 in 2013, so the last time I was watching, CIA wunderkind Carrie Mathison (Danes) was pregnant. How did the show handle that pregnancy? I’ll never know! But now, years later, Carrie is in a new heap of trouble and seems to be going head to head against the President of the United States (Elizabeth Marvel) after the events of season 6. Here’s the synopsis:

At the end of last season, following an assassination attempt on her life, President Keane broke her promise to Carrie by arresting 200 members of the intelligence community without bringing charges against them, including Saul Berenson. The dollar is struggling and it’s a direct reflection of the prospects for Trump’s economic agenda https://briefnews.eu/the-dollar-is-struggling-and-its-a-direct-reflection-of-the-prospects-for-trumps-economic-agenda/ https://briefnews.eu/the-dollar-is-struggling-and-its-a-direct-reflection-of-the-prospects-for-trumps-economic-agenda/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2017 02:03:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-dollar-is-struggling-and-its-a-direct-reflection-of-the-prospects-for-trumps-economic-agenda/ TrumpAlex Brandon (Associated Press)

The dollar has now fallen to its weakest level since January 2015, reflecting the market’s growing lack of confidence in the ability of President Donald Trump to implement his proposed agenda of tax cuts, deregulation and infrastructure.

The greenback’s sluggishness reflects two main factors, says Andrew Brenner, head of global fixed income at National Alliance Capital Markets.

“First and most important is the [differential] acceleration of economies,” he told Business Insider. “While the US economy is ok, it is decelerating and the Federal Reserve has already begun to tighten and will reduce balance sheet. The European economy is getting stronger, while the European Central Bank is not planning to cut back until year end, and even then, they will still be adding stimulus, albeit at a slower rate.”

Second come political factors, according to Brenner. In a way, Donald Trump’s election may have helped stabilize Europe by galvanizing electorates squarely against populist right-wing candidates in countries like Holland and France. This gives the euro another added boost at the dollar’s expense.

“Europe is stable at the moment, while the US has multiple issues and no discernible ability to get legislation passed,” Brenner said. “The debt ceiling and budget ceiling are major issues that are making markets nervous. And while stocks are holding on, the dollar is weaker and weaker.”

Trump has threatened to shut down the US government next month if Congress does not provide funding for his proposed border wall, which he has repeatedly said Mexico would pay for.

Like currencies, the bond market has also remained skeptical of Trump’s ambitious economic goals — both their ability to pass legislative muster or boost economic performance. Treasury yields have remained historically low, despite rallying equity markets and tighter monetary policy from the Fed.

Blue Reflection doesn’t reflect well on the JRPG scene https://briefnews.eu/blue-reflection-doesnt-reflect-well-on-the-jrpg-scene/ https://briefnews.eu/blue-reflection-doesnt-reflect-well-on-the-jrpg-scene/#respond Fri, 18 Aug 2017 05:34:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/blue-reflection-doesnt-reflect-well-on-the-jrpg-scene/

Puberty is a heckuva drug. But no matter how hard it is to be a normal teenager, no one has it tougher than the teens in Japanese role-playing games. Blue Reflection is the latest JRPG from publisher Koei Tecmo and its subsidiary, Gust Studios, and it features a lot of melodramatic youths and girls with secret magic powers. It’ll be available in North America on September 26 for PC and PlayStation 4.

Although Blue Reflection stars a lot of magical girls wielding swords and flinging spells, when I played the demo, it lacked the actual magic you get when a story really clicks. It relies too much on tropes, including that of magical girls — girls who fight evil with sparkles and magic, often while wearing frilly get-ups — which are a staple in Japanese anime.

It’s set in a familiar high school environment and follows Hinako Shirai, a ballerina who suffered an accident and can no longer dance without pain. With the help of two classmates, Yuzu and Lime, she discovers that she has the power to enter people’s collective unconscious and transform into a Reflector. As a Reflector, she gets a wardrobe change — the aforementioned frilly get-up — and she can use emotional energy called Ether to combat demons.

Yuzu and Lime are also Reflectors, and explain that monsters called Sephiras have been attacking people’s collective unconscious. In order to power up enough to defeat these big baddies, the Reflectors have to go around and try to stabilize their classmates’ emotions. This means leaping into the Common, a fantasy landscape that represents the intersection of people’s unconscious minds, and retrieving Ether fragments.

Blue Reflection doesn’t do a good job of explaining why all this matters — it does say vaguely that if a person’s emotions aren’t stabilized, they can die, but that threat is so abstract as to mean nothing. In the demo, there’s no explanation as to why these monsters are attacking people, why the Common matters, or why these high schoolers are the ones who have the power to stop it all.

It is kind of interesting that the way Hinako stabilizes Ether fragments is by using empathy. Basically, she has to take the fragment, listen to the emotions contained within, and accept them. What’s less interesting is that there isn’t actually any gameplay attached to this; Hinako is on autopilot whenever she stabilizes the fragments.

This is my biggest complaint about the Blue Reflection demo. It felt like it was 80 percent cutscenes and 20 percent actual gameplay. For every five minutes I spent wandering around the school halls and talking to characters, I watched 15 minutes of cutscenes. In some games, cut scenes feel like a reward. After you complete a task or a battle, you get some more of the story.

However, Blue Reflection doesn’t do a great job of establishing its characters, so it’s hard to care about them. Hinako suffered from some kind of dancing-related injury, but she walks around just fine. Her speeches about how much she loved ballet just come across as melodramatic. Two of the times I went into the Common to fight demons was because of characters who were going “rampant” with their emotions — but even these occasions were underwhelming.

One character was somehow overwhelmed by her admiration for Hinako, and another was freaking out about writing a love letter to a boy she liked. It isn’t explained why these are enough to cause their emotions to get out of control to the point where superhero teens have to enter an alternate dimension and stabilize them.

The turn-based combat in the Common was OK. It uses a “timeline” system that shows at the top of the screen whose turn is next. Attacks with knockback can delay an enemy’s turn, and I can see some fun strategy emerging later on when you’re faced with multiple enemies. There just wasn’t enough of combat.

To be fair, the demo only covered the prologue and chapters 1 and 2, so maybe Blue Reflection turns its tropes on their heads later on and dials back on the cut scenes. As it is, though, it’s hard to look past its lackluster story and its dearth of gameplay.

Why poverty is not a personal choice, but a reflection of society https://briefnews.eu/why-poverty-is-not-a-personal-choice-but-a-reflection-of-society/ https://briefnews.eu/why-poverty-is-not-a-personal-choice-but-a-reflection-of-society/#respond Tue, 04 Jul 2017 00:19:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-poverty-is-not-a-personal-choice-but-a-reflection-of-society/ poverty son motherShannon Stapleton/Reuters

As the Senate prepares to modify its version of the health care bill, now is a good time to back up and examine why we as a nation are so divided about providing health care, especially to the poor.

I believe one reason the United States is cutting spending on health insurance and safety nets that protect poor and marginalized people is because of American culture, which overemphasizes individual responsibility.

Our culture does this to the point that it ignores the effect of root causes shaped by society and beyond the control of the individual. How laypeople define and attribute poverty may not be that much different from the way US policymakers in the Senate see poverty.

As someone who studies poverty solutions and social and health inequalities, I am convinced by the academic literature that the biggest reason for poverty is how a society is structured. Without structural changes, it may be very difficult if not impossible to eliminate disparities and poverty.

Social structure

About 13.5% of Americans are living in poverty. Many of these people do not have insurance, and efforts to help them gain insurance, be it through Medicaid or private insurance, have been stymied. Medicaid provides insurance for the disabled, people in nursing homes and the poor.

Four states recently asked the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for permission to require Medicaid recipients in their states who are not disabled or elderly to work.

This request is reflective of the fact that many Americans believe that poverty is, by and large, the result of laziness, immorality and irresponsibility.

In fact, poverty and other social miseries are in large part due to social structure, which is how society functions at a macro level.

Some societal issues, such as racism, sexism and segregation, constantly cause disparities in education, employment and income for marginalized groups.

The majority group naturally has a head start, relative to groups that deal with a wide range of societal barriers on a daily basis. This is what I mean by structural causes of poverty and inequality.

Poverty: Not just a state of mind

We have all heard that the poor and minorities need only make better choices – work hard, stay in school, get married, do not have children before they can afford them. If they did all this, they wouldn’t be poor.

Just a few weeks ago, Housing Secretary Ben Carson called poverty “a state of mind.” At the same time, his budget to help low-income households could be cut by more than US$ 6 billion next year.

This is an example of a simplistic view toward the complex social phenomenon. It is minimizing the impact of a societal issue caused by structure – macro‐level labor market and societal conditions – on individuals’ behavior. Such claims also ignore a large body of sociological science.

American independence

Americans have one of the most independent cultures on Earth. A majority of Americans define people in terms of internal attributes such as choices, abilities, values, preferences, decisions and traits.

This is very different from interdependent cultures, such as eastern Asian countries where people are seen mainly in terms of their environment, context and relationships with others.

A direct consequence of independent mindsets and cognitive models is that one may ignore all the historical and environmental conditions, such as slavery, segregation and discrimination against women, that contribute to certain outcomes. When we ignore the historical context, it is easier to instead attribute an unfavorable outcome, such as poverty, to the person.

Views shaped by politics

Many Americans view poverty as an individual phenomenon and say that it’s primarily their own fault that people are poor.

The alternative view is that poverty is a structural phenomenon. From this viewpoint, people are in poverty because they find themselves in holes in the economic system that deliver them inadequate income.

The fact is that people move in and out of poverty. Research has shown that 45% of poverty spells last no more than a year, 70% last no more than three years and only 12% stretch beyond a decade.

The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), a 50-year longitudinal study of 18,000 Americans, has shown that around four in 10 adults experience an entire year of poverty from the ages of 25 to 60. The last Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), a longitudinal survey conducted by the US Census, had about one-third of Americans in episodic poverty at some point in a three-year period, but just 3.5% in episodic poverty for all three years.

Why calling the poor ‘lazy’ is victim blaming

If one believes that poverty is related to historical and environmental events and not just to an individual, we should be careful about blaming the poor for their fates.

Victim blaming occurs when the victim of a crime or any wrongful act is held entirely or partially responsible for the harm that befell them. It is a common psychological and societal phenomenon. Victimology has shown that humans have a tendency to perceive victims at least partially responsible. This is true even in rape cases, where there is a considerable tendency to blame victims and is true particularly if the victim and perpetrator know each other.

I believe all our lives could be improved if we considered the structural influences as root causes of social problems such as poverty and inequality. Perhaps then, we could more easily agree on solutions.

Listen to Lorde’s New Song “Sober,” a Morning-After Reflection on the Night Before https://briefnews.eu/listen-to-lordes-new-song-sober-a-morning-after-reflection-on-the-night-before/ https://briefnews.eu/listen-to-lordes-new-song-sober-a-morning-after-reflection-on-the-night-before/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2017 17:22:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/listen-to-lordes-new-song-sober-a-morning-after-reflection-on-the-night-before/ The songs that the world has heard so far from Lorde’s upcoming new album Melodrama have been excellent, and the track she released this morning, entitled “Sober,” continues this streak. It’s been kicking around for a couple of months now — she played it at Coachella, and also at a small show in the run-up to the festival. (If you’re interested in the song’s genesis, Lorde published a short series of tweets relating it. Content warning: “Jack and Lena.”)

The song fits well into what Lorde has explained as the theme of the album: she told the New York Times magazine last month that the album would be based around the narrative of a single house party. In fact, it was sober that defined that theme:

In March 2016, Lorde began writing a new track called “Sober,” whose pointed juxtaposition of pleasure (“My hips have missed your hips”) and foreboding (“What will we do when we’re sober?”) convinced her once and for all that she was onto something good. She decided that “Melodrama” would tell the story of a single house party. This conceit, impressionistic rather than schematic, would allow her to organize a variety of moods into a tense but cohesive whole.

“Sober,” specifically, deals with the morning after the night before. Thematically, the song recalls a song by another antipodean artist Sia’s “Chandelier,” which details the potential destructiveness of an obsession with partying and alcohol. Lorde’s song is more coy than “Chandelier,” interweaving its substance allusions in with other forms of intoxication, namely fame (“Limelight/ Lose my mind”), dance (“In the morning/ You’ll be dancing with us”), and also love (“My hips have missed your hips.”)

Nevertheless, Lorde’s relationship with all three of these inebriants seems ambivalent, at best — the song revolves around that central question, “What will we do when we’re sober?” It’s a question that plenty of people before her have tried to answer, and Lorde’s reflections on the matter indicate that she’s already in possession of some hard-won wisdom: “I know this story by heart/ Jack and Jill got fucked up and possessive/ When they get dark.” It’s telling, perhaps, that after her Twitter thread about “Sober,” she retweeted one fan’s tweet about the song, which captures the atmosphere perfectly:

Why Scientists Think This Silly-Ass Bird Can't Stop Looking at Its Reflection https://briefnews.eu/why-scientists-think-this-silly-ass-bird-cant-stop-looking-at-its-reflection/ https://briefnews.eu/why-scientists-think-this-silly-ass-bird-cant-stop-looking-at-its-reflection/#respond Fri, 17 Mar 2017 18:25:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-scientists-think-this-silly-ass-bird-cant-stop-looking-at-its-reflection/

We all like to admire ourselves in the mirror from time to time, but there’s a bird in Australia that seems to have developed a rather unhealthy fixation, gazing upon its reflection for hours on end while seemingly oblivious to its surroundings. It’s pretty funny, but should we be worried about this fine feathered fellow?

As reported in ABC News, the bird, a bush stone-curlew, was photographed earlier this week outside a building at Queensland University. The photographer, Nick Wiggins from ABC News, posted the image on Twitter, and it quickly went viral. The bird has spawned a series of memes and its very own Facebook page.

Caitlin Raynor, a volunteer with Wildcare Australia, placed sign on the window that read, “I’m a bush stone curlew. I’m fine. I just like to stare at myself in the window.” As she told ABC News, it’s fairly odd but common behavior for this particular species.

Indeed, bush stone-curlews are known for their reflection-obsessing behavior. Back in January, another curlew gazed into a Brisbane office window for hours. Wildlife officials told concerned office workers that, because the bird is nocturnal, it becomes hypnotized by its own reflection during the daytime. The workers were told it would fly away at sundown, which it did, but it kept coming back. Concerned citizens from the building next door left a bowl of water for the entranced bird. Sometimes, it would get so exhausted from its efforts that it would sit down on its haunches.

Kevin J. McGowan, a biologist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, says this is an variation on another unusual behavior, birds fighting with their reflections.

“Birds don’t recognize their reflections as themselves, but think it’s another bird,” McGowan told Gizmodo. “Northern Cardinals are particularly well known to attack themselves in windows or car mirrors. My landlord had a pair of cardinals that spent hours over the course of the breeding season last year fighting with the cardinal they knew lived in his car rear view window.”

McGowan says the stone curlew is generally an odd bird. Also known as think-knees, he says they’re mostly nocturnal shorebirds of open areas that are highly camouflaged, and hide in plain sight during the day by standing still.

“So, the standing and staring part is perfectly normal for them,” he says. “There is not a lot known about the social behavior of thick-knees, so I’m not quite clear what this bird wants to do to, or with, that other stone curlew.”

The scientists say that the best thing to do when encountering these birds caught up in their own reflections is to just leave them alone. Eventually, they’ll snap out of it. But if it becomes a persistent issue, there are solutions, such as covering the window with posters to get rid of the bird’s reflection.

Which, in the case of one Australian curlew, is exactly what what had to be done.
