Good Morning Britain welcomed Nicola Sturgeon on to the show today to debate her ongoing fight for a second referendum on Scottish independence. The leader of the Scottish National Party last took the country to the polls in 2014, but lost out and as a result, the UK remained united. 

However, in light of the Brexit result, Sturgeon is fighting once more for a referendum, believing she would get a different result this time as Scotland want to stay in the European Union. 

She said to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid this morning: “Scotland voted to remain in the European Union and we’re being ignored…”

Morgan cut her off, insisting: “You’re part of the United Kingdom which voted to leave the European Union.”

Sturgeon quietly added: “Well that’s why I want independence.”

“If that’s the case that Scotland has to just accept it’s not the most positive case to put forward…”

Elsewhere in the debate, Sturgeon laid out her plans for Brexit should Scotland be independent. 

Saying how she didn’t want a hard border, the SNP politician added: “We would continue to trade with the rest of the UK and the rest of the UK would trade with Scotland.”

She added: “[The choice facing Scotland is] either decide our own future or have it decided for us by people like Boris Johnson.”

Presenters Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway returned to Good Morning Britain today alongside news reporter Charlotte Hawkins for the latest edition of the ITV programme.

Appearing via video link, Jo was eager to put her point across after being made the new leader of the Liberal Democrat party, and all her attentions have turned to Brexit.

“I totally accept that there are differences of opinion and strong views on this issue,” she began. “And I’m standing up for what I believe is right, for what I think is the UK’s best future, which is within the European Union.

“I’m not going to stop arguing for what I believe in.”

“And I think what we’re proposing here is fundamentally a democratic exercise,” the party member continued. “It is to have a peoples’ vote on the specific Brexit deal, because there was no specific Brexit deal in 2016.

“‘Brexit means Brexit’ was the meaningless phrase that we heard in the aftermath of the referendum and even now, three years on, the Brexiteers can’t agree on what Brexit means.”

Swinson’s claims were founded on the idea the people voting on whether to remain or leave the European Union in 2016 didn’t really “know” what they were voting for – as it was very early in the process.

Former Prime Minister Theresa May didn’t begin negotiating with the EU until after the vote was revealed.

“I don’t have any confidence that the majority in the United Kingdom [are] for any specific form of Brexit,” the guest went on.

“You’ve got people who say they couldn’t possibly have Theresa May’s deal they’d rather stay in the EU. And you’ve got others who say they don’t want a hard or no deal Brexit.

“So if we don’t have confidence that there’s a majority for any specific Brexit, how could we possibly go ahead with that course of action without checking with the British people first?” Swinson added.

Taking to Twitter however, viewers shared their feelings over the politician’s comments, with many confused and insisting they did know what they were voting for.

“Who voted in 2016? Weren’t they people then???” one frustrated person asked.

Another offered: “We had a people’s vote, it’s just that people like this woman only want democracy as long as any result suits them.”

“Your opinion is meaningless and goes against the democratic will of everyone in the UK,” a third slammed. “Losers of a referendum must accept the majority view or we lose democracy – that which holds this country together.”

A fourth accused: “Why would she respect the result of another vote, she doesn’t respect the last one. Why can’t she just be honest and say she wants to stay in the EU Empire.”

“The people already voted we voted Brexit so get over it and get on with it,” a fifth ordered.

And another exclaimed: “It’s not about what YOU want or what YOU think is best…..It’s what the COUNTRY voted for!”

“We already had a people’s vote, we leave end of. I wasn’t lied to I knew what I was voting for,” one viewer added.

LONDON — A cross-party group of anti-Brexit MPs has published draft legislation for creating a route to a referendum on Theresa May’s deal as MPs prepare to vote on the prime minister’s agreement with Brussels.

MPs including senior Conservative backbencher Dominic Grieve, Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable, and Labour’s Chuka Umunna are backing two pieces of proposed legislation designed to force a so-called People’s Vote.

Prime Minister Theresa May unveiled the Brexit deal she has negotiated with the EU, and it was met with multiple resignations from her own cabinet and some of her own MPs calling for her to resign. May’s Conservative party has a wafer-thin technical majority in parliament and it will be very, very difficult for her to get her deal approved.

Macedonia’s electoral commission has announced that the Sunday referendum to change the Balkan country’s name to the Republic of Northern Macedonia has failed to pass the necessary 50 percent turnout threshold. “On this referendum it is clear that the decision has not been made,” the head of the electoral board, Oliver Derkoski, said. With some 94 percent of the ballots counted, the turnout stays at 36 percent. Over 90 percent of them voted “yes” to the question: “Are you in favor of NATO and EU membership, and accepting the name agreement between the Republic of Macedonia and Greece?” Meanwhile, Macedonian PM Zoran Zaev said that the will of the people must be respected and approved by the Parliament despite the low turnout. Zaev said he would call for snap parliamentary elections if the lawmakers fail to deliver. The deal with Greece, agreed in June this year, proposes name change in return for the lifting of the Greek veto on Macedonia’s NATO and EU membership. EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn has already voiced support to the referendum, calling on all parties to “to respect this decision and take it forward with utmost responsibility and unity across party lines.”

At a summit with fellow European leaders in Salzburg on Tuesday, May once again stressed that the UK would be leaving the EU in March 2019, making it clear that the British government would not accept a second referendum on whether to leave the bloc.

Her comments, however, put her at odds with Treasury Minister Mel Stride, a top Tory in the current government, who told Sky News just hours beforehand that MPs could possibly trigger a new vote if they reject May’s ‘Chequers’ plan, which proposes close post-Brexit ties between the EU and the UK.

“Those to the right of the party – the pro-Brexit wing will be very concerned that if that deal doesn’t prevail, they’ll end up in the situation where we could have a second referendum and we could end up not leaving the EU altogether,” he said.

“So there is a danger of that happening if Chequers doesn’t prevail.”

His comments quickly sparked a conversation among some of Brexit’s most outspoken critics, including MP Tulip Siddiq, a Labour supporter of the anti-Brexit ‘Best for Britain’ group.

“This is one small step for the minister but a giant stride for our campaign to deliver a people’s vote,” she said, as quoted by The Independent.

Alison McGovern, an MP with the People’s Vote campaign also chimed in. “This has changed everything. A minister has had the courage to tell the truth about the mess the government are in over Brexit and let the cat out of the bag,” she said.

The EU criticized proposals within May’s Chequers plan at the summit on Tuesday, warning that they needed to be “reworked and further negotiated.” European Council President Donald Tusk said that major hurdles remained, including the UK’s policy on Ireland and the future trading relationship between Britain and the EU. 

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she hopes there will be a Brexit which takes place with respect and in a “good atmosphere,” while Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz stressed the need for a deal to be reached, in order to avoid both sides getting hurt.

“We are striving to make a compromise possible. [EU Brexit negotiator] Michel Barnier is doing well, he has our full support. He has taken a step towards the British. Now we expect a willingness to compromise from the British, hopefully to bring about a deal,” Kurz said before the meeting of EU leaders.

“We will propose today an extraordinary summit in November and if the member states support this, it will happen. Hopefully by then we will reach an agreement with Great Britain.”

LONDON — The British millionaire founder of clothing brand Superdry is donating £1 million to a group trying to secure a second referendum on the UK’s final Brexit deal.

Julian Dunkerton is donating the sum to campaign group the People’s Vote, according to the Observer. The People’s Vote is a campaign group set up in April 2018 calling for a vote on the final terms of Britain’s exit from the EU. The group was set up by campaigners and MPs from across the political spectrum. It is led by Labour MP Chuka Umunna.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly suggested to US President Donald Trump that the conflict in Ukraine could be solved with a referendum during their one-on-one meeting on July 16, Bloomberg reported.

Putin mentioned having made the proposal in a closed-door speech on Thursday, but said he would not discuss the plan publicly while Trump took time to consider it, two sources who attended Putin’s speech told Bloomberg.

An estimated 100,000 Brexit opponents marched in the streets of London calling for Britain’s break-up with the EU to be stopped or for a second referendum to be conducted. Thousands of Brexit supporters rallied in the capital too.

Drone footage posted by RT’s Ruptly agency shows droves of Brexit opponents marching towards parliament on the second anniversary of the country’s decision to leave EU.

Some carried EU flags, while others held placards that read “Brexit stole my future” and “We demand a vote on the final Brexit deal.” They claim the decision to leave the bloc is not a done deal yet, and people must make their voices heard.

Meanwhile, a counter-protest also took place in London on Saturday, with pro-Brexit demonstrators pushing for the government to continue with its plan to leave the EU – a move which is slated for March 2019.

RT spoke to the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Gerard Batten, who said the mainstream media conveniently ignored the pro-Brexit rally.

“I’ve just come from a pro-Brexit march and a rally which was held outside the BBC and Sky and ITV’s studios…but funnily enough, nobody came out to interview us or filmed it, as far as I know. They’re not giving much publicity to the other side of the argument – the argument that says we had the referendum, we reached a decision, and now we should have left and we certainly should be leaving as soon as possible,” Batton said.

He went on to address discussions surrounding a so-called “hard Brexit” and “soft Brexit,” saying there is no such thing. “There is [only] leaving the European Union. And if you want to know what that looks like, all you’ve got to do is look at every other country in the world that isn’t a member of the European Union. It’s not complicated. They’re [UK government] trying to make it as complicated as possible.”

A recent poll carried out by Survation for ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ found that almost half of British people want a second referendum on Brexit. It suggests that a vote held today would reverse the outcome of the 2016 vote, which saw a slim majority of the country (52 percent) voicing their desire to leave the EU. (LINK )

Britain’s government is also divided on whether or not to hold a new Brexit referendum, with the Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party opposing it. The centrist Liberal Democrats, however, support a new vote.
