In the third episode of the third season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” called “Mining the Mind’s Mines,” the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos has been tasked with rescuing a team of geologists from a planet populated by silicon-based life forms called the Scrubble. Commander Ransom (Jerry O’Connell) bemoans the fact that Federation scientists often play fast-and-loose with safety, and it’s always Starfleet who has to come clean up their research missions when they go afoul.

On the Scrubble planet, mysterious glowing crystal orbs read a victim’s thoughts, briefly manifest their deepest desires in the real world, and then turn their victims into statues. Throughout the episode, characters will have to come up with quick, embarrassed excuses when some of their deepest desires appear in front of their peers. Ensign Mariner (Tawney Newsome), for instance, can’t help but reveal that she’s developed feelings for her Andorian co-worker Jennifer. Ensign Boimler’s deepest desires involve his superior officer asking him to help out in an important mission; it’s kind of sad that even in fantasy, Boimler is never the one in charge.

As is the mission statement of “Lower Decks,” “Mind’s Mines” is full of fun “Trek” references and clever Easter Eggs that an astute Trekkie will spot. Here are a few the keen eyes at /Film spotted.

Seductive, Mind-Reading, Shape-Shifting Alien Brain Parasites

If going by production order — which, Trekkies will tell you, is the only correct order in which to watch the original series — then “The Man Trap” is the show’s fifth episode. Broadcast order (feh) had it running first. Either way, a precedent was set early on “Star Trek,” and audiences would frequently see magical sci-fi creatures of devices that could read the minds of Starfleet officers and physically manifest their desires. In “The Man Trap” (September 8, 1966), Kirk (William Shatner) found an intruder on his ship in the form of a shapeshifting alien called simply the M-113 Creature. The creature is a leech monster who, as a defense mechanism, can appear differently to different people.

In the episode “Shore Leave” (December 29, 1966), the crew of the Enterprise finds themselves on a planet that can read their thoughts and instantly construct robots based on whatever they’re thinking of. Kirk thinks of an old school rival. Sulu (George Takei) dreams of a handgun. Dr. McCoy (De Forest Kelley) dreams of the White Rabbit from “Alice in Wonderland.”

In the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode “Where No One Has Gone Before” (October 26, 1987), the Enterprise is stranded in a distant part of the universe that, just as a natural phenomenon, manifested thoughts as reality, and Worf (Michael Dorn) created a beloved childhood pet. Picard (Patrick Stewart) had tea with his dead mother.

In the “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” episode “If Wishes Were Horses” (May 17, 1993), the station crew finds figures like Rumpelstiltskin (Michael Anderson) wandering the station, as well as a hornier doppelgänger of Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell).

It seems that wishes do come true.

Only glimpsed briefly, and only mentioned by name once, “Mining the Mind’s Mines” sees two California-class vessels coming to the aid of the U.S.S. Hood, an Excelsior-class vessel that is in charge of the mission. The Hood, Trekkies will know, has a storied off-to-the-side history throughout “Trek.” Most notably, the Hood was the first ship that Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) was assigned to early in his Starfleet career, serving under Captain Robert DeSoto (Michael Cavanaugh). Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton) also once mentioned that he, too, served aboard the Hood at one point.

The Hood would appear multiple times throughout “Next Generation,” probably because the show’s FX department only had so many models to go around, and the Hood was always a fun one to put next to the Enterprise. As such, the Hood was mentioned in the episodes “Tin Man,” “The Defector,” “Allegiance,” and was seen in larger fleets in battle-based episodes. The Hood would also get involved in scrapes with the Dominion during “Deep Space Nine,” and its name would be mentioned myriad times throughout.

That the Hood is still in operation all these years later speaks to the tenacity of the ship. The Hood, incidentally, was named after Rear Admiral Sir Horace Lambert Alexander Hood, a World War I officer for the Royal Navy.

Dr. Leah Brahms

Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) is an engineer who loves machines and technical stuff, so it makes perfect sense that his ultimate fantasy should be an apparition of Dr. Leah Brahms.

First mentioned in the NextGen episode “Booby Trap” (October 30, 1989), Dr. Leah Brahms (Susan Gibney) was one of the designers who was instrumental in the design of the Enterprise-D. In “Booby Trap,” Geordi has to find a way to speed up power transfers on the ship in order to escape a millennia-old space snare that was draining power from all its systems. To better understand the ship, Geordi creates a holographic simulation of Brahms, and they develop a good rapport. Geordi ends up kind of developing a crush on the hologram, and the episode ends with a kiss.

If that seems a little creepy — kissing a simulation of a real person — Geordi will be taken to task in “Galaxy’s Child” (March 11, 1991) wherein he will has an opportunity to meet the real Dr. Brahms. She discovers his lovey-dovey simulation and is horrified. Eventually, the two work together to solve a crisis, and Dr. Brahms has no hard feelings … as now she can go home to her husband. Geordi is left alone. In the series finale “All Good Things…” (May 23, 1994), an alternate future timeline reveals that Geordi and Dr. Brahms ended up getting married and having children of their own.

Kukulkan

When the mind-reading crystal balls crack open, their powers are intensified, and they begin manifesting nightmares instead of dreams. Some of the creatures that appear are merely terrifying apparitions that anyone would be scared of: Klingon clowns with bat’leth arms, giant Borg snakes, etc. One of the manifestations is a red winged serpent that is namechecked as Kukulkan.

Kukulkan is a fun reference to a creature encountered in a “Star Trek: The Animated Series” episode “How Sharper Than a Serpent’s Tooth” (October 5, 1974) wherein the Enterprise finds an ancient Mayan city on a distant planet and awakens a legitimate Mayan god. Kukulkan announces that he once lived on Earth where he was worshiped. Now awakened, he plans on returning to get his old gig back. Kirk announces, in a daring notion for a kids’ show, that Earth has outgrown the need to worship; the planet, he explains, is now wholly atheist. Kirk thanks Kululkan for guiding Earth people through an early phase of development, but now is the time to kindly retire as a god. Kukulkan does.

The Kukulkan seen in “Lower Decks” has nothing to say; it’s just a big scary flying monster. But his appearance is a fun nod.

Silicon-Based Life Forms

The Scrubble are but the latest in a long series of “Star Trek” species that appear to be silicon based. Although the actual scientific possibility of silicon-based life seems to have been largely disproven, the possibility of a living rock is too tantalizing for the writers of sci-fi shows to give up. The two elements are right next to each other on the periodic table. As we all know, carbon and silicon can form ionic compounds by gaining four electrons, forming the carbide anion (C4-) and silicide anion (Si4-), but they more frequently form compounds through covalent bonding.

As such, mineral-based lifeforms crop up on “Trek” with frequency. In “Devil in the Dark” (March 9, 1967) Kirk and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) discover a rock monster called a horta that killed people to protect its eggs. In “The Savage Curtain” (March 7, 1969), Kirk and Spock are forced into hand-to-hand combat by an all-powerful, lava-like Excalbian. On NextGen, “Home Soil” (February 22, 1988) sees the discovery of sentient grains of sand, and “Silicon Avatar” (October 14, 1991) sees the second appearance of a creature simply called The Crystalline Entity.

This is nothing to say of the multiple references throughout “Trek” to the Tholians, an antagonistic species made of crystal. The Scrubble are merely the latest in a long line of such species.

Tess Daly references separation from Vernon on Strictly as she almost ‘breaks BBC rules’ https://briefnews.eu/tess-daly-references-separation-from-vernon-on-strictly-as-she-almost-breaks-bbc-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/tess-daly-references-separation-from-vernon-on-strictly-as-she-almost-breaks-bbc-rules/#respond Sun, 29 Nov 2020 11:35:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/tess-daly-references-separation-from-vernon-on-strictly-as-she-almost-breaks-bbc-rules/

Tess Daly, 51, was back on hand to host another edition of Strictly Come Dancing as the competition is just weeks away from its Grand Final. For the past few weeks, the BBC presenter has been separated from her husband Vernon, 46, as it was revealed earlier this month he was going to be taking part in this year’s series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! which has been relocated to Gwrych Castle in Wales. The mother-of-two rarely speaks about her other half on television, making her comments on Saturday night even more surprising.

The moment came as Tess’ co-host Claudia Winkleman, 48, had just finished speaking with contestants Ranvir Singh, 43, and Giovanni Pernice, 30.

Teasing what was to come, the comedic Strictly star explained former Royal Marine JJ Chalmers, 33, was going to be doing a routine based around the Scottish Highlands.

“I am taking you there for our honeymoon,” she joked to her fellow presenter before the mother-of-two then brought her husband into the conversation.

Not expecting to talk about her other half, the anchor of the programme remarked: “Vernon’s away. I’m in.”

Of course, this was in reference to him still taking part in the ITV reality and it is usually stated in the rules that BBC stars don’t reference their rival broadcaster on air.

It might have been a brief comment, but it didn’t go unnoticed by those watching at home who flocked to social media and launched into meltdown over the presenter almost breaking the rules.

One envious viewer wrote on Twitter: “Tess reminding me she’s the one married to Vernon and not me #Strictly.”

Another added: “‘Vernon’s away’ – I’m old enough to feel a genuine frisson of excitement that Tess has alluded to ITV *while on prime-time BBC1* #Strictly.”

Whilst a third commented: “Tess letting us know Vernon is in the Castle Strictly,” a fourth shared: “Tess mentioning Vernon being away on Strictly but not mentioning I’m A Celeb cause she’s on the BBC #imacelebrity #imaceleb #Strictly.”

Seen eating a slice of pizza and wearing a black, silk robe after finishing her duties on Strictly, the presenter wrote: “From one show to another. @I’mACelebrity @VernonKay.”

Tess has also been ushering her support for Vernon by posting pictures of the pair on her social media channels.

On Saturday evening, the television stalwart reposted a clip of her other half showing off some of his dancing skills.

It seems she was is very proud of her husband as she has also posted short snippets of him talking about her with his fellow campmates.

Fans of the pair have been lapping up the husband and wife being on-screen at the same time, with one replying to Tess’ posts on Instagram: “We need Vernon back on the television more.

“Could Vernon be a Strictly contestant or is that a conflict of interest? Don’t know,” a second wrote to the presenter.

A third posted: “Think Strictly has got competition,” whilst a fourth fan remarked: “Power couple for life.”

Whilst a fifth shared of the couple: “Have always loved you two, @vernonkay is our winner, blessings always.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 7:25pm on BBC One. I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.

Fuller House’s Final Season: 20+ Easter Eggs and Classic References Explained https://briefnews.eu/fuller-houses-final-season-20-easter-eggs-and-classic-references-explained/ https://briefnews.eu/fuller-houses-final-season-20-easter-eggs-and-classic-references-explained/#respond Mon, 08 Jun 2020 00:46:50 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/fuller-houses-final-season-20-easter-eggs-and-classic-references-explained/

Fuller House‘s entire five-season run was peppered with callbacks to Full House, but the Netflix comedy went above and beyond for its just-released final episodes. And we have the show’s stars to thank for it, apparently.

“We kept giving the writers more [ideas], because we remember most of the things from the show,” Candace Cameron Bure tells TVLine. “Where they would give one nugget, we would give them another five on top of that. In that scene in the attic, Jodie and I were the ones who were like, ‘We need the Honeybee costumes and D.J.’s lips phone!’ They just have the newer things in the attic. We’re the ones who always suggest more and more.”

Adds Andrea Barber, “A lot of our writers haven’t even seen Full House, oddly enough, but Candace and Jodie and I were like, ‘We know all the relics you need to pull out.’ And some of them aren’t even referenced. We don’t even talk about them. You have to keep your eye out and look for them. This was our last chance to do all these callbacks, and we jammed in as many as we could.”

For this list, we chose to focus on the final nine episodes of Fuller House, which hit Netflix earlier this week. From old Tanner family memorabilia (D.J.’s lips phone!) to familiar guest stars (so many exes!), no stone was left unturned — or unreferenced — in the second half of Season 5.

Did we miss a few? It’s possible, but hey, that’s what the comments section is for! So check out our gallery of Easter eggs and references — click here for direct access — then drop a comment with any of your own additions below.

Fuller House Star Addresses the Michelle References in Season 5 https://briefnews.eu/fuller-house-star-addresses-the-michelle-references-in-season-5/ https://briefnews.eu/fuller-house-star-addresses-the-michelle-references-in-season-5/#respond Mon, 16 Dec 2019 01:15:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fuller-house-star-addresses-the-michelle-references-in-season-5/

Michelle Tanner may not have shown either of her faces in Fuller House‘s fifth season, but thanks to a steady stream of shout-outs, she was never far from our minds.

The first mention of the elusive third Tanner sister came in the Season 5 premiere, when D.J. and Kimmy’s kids were sorting through the attic. Max explained that he learned about their family’s history through eight years of carefully curated home videos (“It’s almost like a TV show…”), concluding with the time “Aunt Michelle got amnesia” after falling off her horse. Good times, good times.

Michelle came up again — though not by name — in the midseason finale, when Danny congratulated D.J., Stephanie and Kimmy on their triple engagements. “You know, it’s so nice to have three daughters again,” he joked.

Series creator (and former showrunner) Jeff Franklin confirmed to TVLine back in Season 3 that he stopped asking Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen if they were interested in reprising their iconic role. “The door is open, but I’m not going to be calling them anymore to invite them,” he explained. “They just don’t seem interested in coming. It’s been three years of invitations, so they know the door is open. It’s up to them to decide if they want to come play or not.”

And now, Candace Cameron Bure has confirmed to TVLine that no invitations were extended for the comedy’s final season, which wrapped production last month. “We did not reach out to them,” she said. “It was very clear several seasons ago that they did not want to do it.”

Nine more episodes remain in Fuller House‘s fifth and final season, but considering filming is already complete, it’s highly unlikely that Michelle will be paying her family a surprise visit in San Francisco. (Let’s just pretend she’s enjoying a nice long vacation… with Aunt Becky.)

Are you disappointed that Michelle never made an appearance on Fuller House? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.

SNL Video: Matthew Broderick Plays Mike Pompeo in Impeachment Sketch, Ferris Bueller References Abound https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-matthew-broderick-plays-mike-pompeo-in-impeachment-sketch-ferris-bueller-references-abound/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-matthew-broderick-plays-mike-pompeo-in-impeachment-sketch-ferris-bueller-references-abound/#respond Sun, 06 Oct 2019 08:28:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snl-video-matthew-broderick-plays-mike-pompeo-in-impeachment-sketch-ferris-bueller-references-abound/

Saturday was not a day off for Matthew Broderick, who popped up during this week’s SNL cold open to portray Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He arrived amidst a conversation at the White House between Mike Pence (played by Beck Bennett) and Rudy Giuliani (Kate McKinnon), both of whom were extremely flustered over this “impeachment farce.” Giuliani was frustrated that it was interfering with his “busy season” (aka Halloween), while Pence was simply annoyed that it was interrupting his plans to see Judy with “Mother.”

As for M.I.A. President Trump, typically played by Alec Baldwin, he was busy meeting with an alligator breeder to discuss populating his beloved wall.

OK, now for what we all came here to talk about: When asked about failing to meet a subpoena deadline to present the House with Ukraine-related documents, he simply replied that he bought himself a little time. Cut to a Pompeo-less hearing, where Alex Moffat was taking attendance Ferris Bueller-style: “Pompeo? … Pompeo? … Pompeo?”

Popular on TVLine

And that wasn’t the only reference to Broderick’s iconic character. On his way out of the White House — presumably fleeing to Finland — Pompeo announced, “Impeachment moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

This marks Broderick’s third appearance on Saturday Night Live. He made his hosting debut in 1988, then returned for a second time in 1998.

Disenchantment references: What are the film and TV show references in Disenchantment? https://briefnews.eu/disenchantment-references-what-are-the-film-and-tv-show-references-in-disenchantment/ https://briefnews.eu/disenchantment-references-what-are-the-film-and-tv-show-references-in-disenchantment/#respond Thu, 30 Aug 2018 10:17:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disenchantment-references-what-are-the-film-and-tv-show-references-in-disenchantment/

Netflix dropped Disenchantment earlier this month to a mixed reception.

Disenchantment has been created by The Simpsons and Futurama writer Matt Groening as he makes his first real foray in the fantasy genre.

The series has callbacks not only to Groening’s previous work but also other big films and TV shows.

Here are some of the best Easter Eggs in the animated series.

Game of Thrones

Perhaps the most obvious reference is to the throne made of swords – which bears a striking resemblance to the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones.

In episode one, titled A Princess, an Elf, and a Demon Walk Into a Bar, Princess Bean’s (Abbi Jacobson) intended husband Prince Guysbert (played by David Herman) was impaled on the throne and left to fend for himself.

The Princess Bride

The classic novel and popular Eighties film got a nod in Disenchantment after Bean was seen fleeing from her own wedding as she took a tumble out of a window.

Similarly, in the film Buttercup, escaped from her wedding on the back of a horse after falling out of a window.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF DISENCHANTMENT?

Lord of the Rings

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings gets a reference in the form of the Orc-like creatures that Elfo (Nat Faxon) stumbles across after leaving the safety his home.

But there are more parallels including Mount Piping Hot Suckhole – where demons are destroyed – and is very much akin to Mount Doom and the destruction of the One Ring.

Monty Python

Disenchantment pays homage to Monty Python and The Holy Grail with its Plague Patrol, which is similar to the Dead Collector in the film.

Tinker Bell from Disney’s Peter Pan

Disney also gets a ribbing in Disenchantment with Bean, Elfo and Luci (Eric Andre) encountering an aged, call girl fairy who bears more than a passing resemblance to Tinker Bell from Peter Pan.

However, Disenchantment’s take on the fairy is far less innocent with the magical creature offering to turn tricks for them at a price.

HOW MANY EPISODES WILL BE IN DISENCHANTMENT SEASON 2?

The Simpsons

There were always going to be Easter Eggs from The Simpsons. One of the big ones is King Zog (John DiMaggio) falling asleep during Bean’s wedding and being awoken by his wife Queen Oona (Tress MacNeille), which was similar to Homer drifting off during Reverend Lovejoy’s Sunday sermons.

The most obvious reference to The Simpsons was when Bean’s maid Bunty (Lucy Montgomery) tells her: “Ladies pinch. W****s use rouge.” Marge was told the same thing by her mother as she got ready on prom night.

Meanwhile, some fans have noticed a resemblance between Bart Simpson and Elfo with both favouring red T-shirts and blue shorts.

Futurama

If ever there was an obvious Easter Egg, it would be the vision of Bender, Fry and the Professor appearing during a scene between Luci and King Zog.

Could this also be a callback to a previous episode of Futurama where the characters ventured into a medieval world? Some fans have suggested that Disenchantment, The Simpsons and Futurama exist in the same universe.

More subtle nods include Fry’s wig in the tent where Prince Merkimer (Matt Berry) is getting ready.

In fact, Prince Merkimer feels very much like a fantasy version of Zapp Brannigan, who was also trying to win over Leela.

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF DISENCHANTMENT?

Will there be another series of Disenchantment?

Yes, is the simple answer. Season two of Disenchantment is already on the cards after Netflix commissioned a total of 20 episodes – the first run only had 10 instalments.

Season two of Disenchantment is expected to be released in 2019.

All episodes will again drop in one go for audiences to binge-watch.

So fans can expect even more nods to iconic films and TV shows as well as Groening’s previous creations.

Disenchantment season 1 is available to watch on Netflix now

‘The Predator’ Reshoots Included References to Other ‘Predator’ Films https://briefnews.eu/the-predator-reshoots-included-references-to-other-predator-films/ https://briefnews.eu/the-predator-reshoots-included-references-to-other-predator-films/#respond Sun, 08 Jul 2018 14:02:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-predator-reshoots-included-references-to-other-predator-films/ The Predator reshoots

In April, actor Keegan-Michael Key revealed that about three-quarters of The Predator‘s third act was reshot. Now a new report reveals what changes were made to co-writer/director Shane Black‘s highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel, and that a recently-tested cut of the movie includes references to a number of other films in the franchise. Find out what was altered during The Predator reshoots below.

Warning: possible spoilers ahead for The Predator.

AvPGalaxy (via ScreenRant), a fan site that’s been covering these movies for years with a pretty reliable track record, has sources that have provided some new updates about what was changed during The Predator reshoots. They say that hybrid alien creatures and “friendly” Predators have been removed from the movie entirely, but apparently there’s a Predator dog that is still in the film.

Before we go any further, here’s some quick background information. In 1990’s Predator 2, a Predator nicknamed City Hunter wields a spear to kill gang members in Los Angeles. You can get a glimpse of that spear around the :10 mark here:

And at the very end of 2004’s AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Lex (Sanaa Lathan) is gifted a spear by the Predators after defeating the Alien Queen:

AvPGalaxy’s report details some of the easter eggs we’ll see in The Predator that reference other movies in this franchise:

Lex’s spear [from Alien vs. Predator] is now displayed alongside City Hunter’s spear from Predator 2. Casey, Olivia Munn’s character, is also shown some grainy pictures of the Predators from the first two films.

That sounds like references that could just briefly appear in the background that only the most hardcore fans would notice, but this next batch of information is a lot more spoilery, so I’m going to give one more warning now: spoiler-phobes, beware.

OK, now that we’re all on the same spoilery page here, the report also says “All death sequences involving the more prominent characters have also been completely changed now,” though it’s unclear how exactly they’ve been changed. (Come on – you didn’t think the whole cast was going to make it out of this movie alive, did you?) The final battle with what AvPGalaxy calls the Upgrade Predator (Fox internally refers to it as the Super Predator) now takes place in the woods at night, and after the ugly mega-beast attacks the base that we saw in the most recent trailer, it “gives the survivors a chance to escape before he begins to hunt them to find the best fighter amongst them.”

It seems like Shane Black wanted to take another swing at the ending with these reshoots and ended up throwing the fans a bone with those easter eggs, and I have my fingers crossed that this will all result in a satisfying popcorn flick. The Predator arrives in theaters on September 14, 2018.

  • Air Canada and Malaysia Airlines have altered references to Taiwan on their websites, indicating China’s claim over the self-ruled island.
  • The shift comes weeks after China demanded 36 airlines stop listing Taiwan as a separate country, a move the White House called “Orwellian nonsense.”
  • But Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, and British Airways have all shifted their positions on Taiwan after being contacted by Chinese authorities this year.
  • China holds a significant amount of power over foreign companies and can easily interrogate staff, shut down company websites, or limit market access.

Air Canada and Malaysia Airlines have changed references to Taiwan on their websites, seemingly acquiescing to demands from China.

On April 25, China sent a letter to 36 foreign airlines pressuring them to remove references to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau as countries on their websites and marketing materials. American Airlines, Qantas and United all received the letter, which the White House described as “Orwellian nonsense” and “part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views” on private companies.
