It’s no Super Bowl Sunday, but the Oscars are starting to step their game up in the realm of must-see commercials. The best of the bunch are a series of female-directed Walmart Oscars commercials. And they’re deserving of an Oscar category all of their own.

Dee Rees, Nancy Meyers, and Melissa McCarthy each directed one-minute short films for Walmart that could rival feature films. The most exciting of the bunch came from Mudbound director Dee Rees, who created a big-budget sci-fi short that went viral.

It’s amazing that we don’t have a bigger culture around Oscars commercials. Every Super Bowl Sunday, we furiously rank our favorite Super Bowl commercials, but on the night built around the best of filmmaking, nada.

That’s beginning to change. 2015 saw the star-studded Apple commercial directed by Ava Duvernay go viral. Last year, Walmart began its short film ad campaign with commercials from Antoine Fuqua, Marc Forster and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg.

Now this year, we have a slew of female-directed short films that were even more exciting to watch than the Oscars ceremony.

Dee Rees Short

The best of these shorts comes from Oscar nominee Dee Rees, who may have lost Best Original Screenplay for Mudbound, but won the night with her delightful, high-concept short. Titled “The Box,” the short reunites Rees with Mudbound star Mary J. Blige, who plays one of the many figments of a young girl’s active imagination.

The colorful, trippy short follows a young woman navigating a treacherous sci-fi landscape, fighting terrifying creatures and evil dictators. But she’s suddenly called by her mother, who orders her to bed. In a fun revelation, it turns out the battle was all a product of a young girl’s imagination as she plays in a Walmart box. It’s a sweet short that was also praised for its inspirational depiction of a young science-obsessed girl with two mothers.

Nancy Meyers Short

But not everyone is a sci-fi fan. Nancy Meyers delivers a short film for all the music score fanatics out there, following Hans Zimmer as he struggles with writers block. It’s a frank and funny short that depicts the famous composer of Dunkirk, The Lion King, and Inception frustratedly trying to compose a piece, but to no avail. He’s helped by a member of his band, who begins tapping a Walmart box for inspiration. Eventually, everyone joins in a merry musical circle and Hans finishes his next masterpiece.

Melissa McCarthy Short

The last short stars The Greatest Showman star Keala Settle. Melissa McCarthy, who has helmed four episodes of her sitcom Mike and Molly, directs this inspirational short about finding your voice.

A dejected Settle enters a mysterious box at the subway station, which takes her to a nervous young girl standing silent on a stage. Hearing the jeers from the audience, Settle whispers to the young girl, who wows everyone with her voice. Cut to Settle singing loud and proud on stage. It’s a sweet and sentimental short about following your dreams.

Netflix has made headway at the Emmys, but it’s still trying to become a major player at the Oscars. Mudbound feels like the streaming service’s attempt to enter the awards season with a major contender – a period drama stacked with great actors and powered by a story that feels all-too-relevant.

But beyond that, it just looks like a fine film, pure and simple. You can see for yourself in the Mudbound trailer below.

Set in Mississippi in the years after World War II, the film tracks two families, one white and one black (and both home to army veterans), as they attempt to coexist. “Attempt” is the key word there – this is the American deep south in the ’40s and this trailer is full of the kind of startling and unsettling imagery that suggests things won’t go well.

There’s a lot going on here: the stunning but terrifying landscapes, the cast of actors you’re always happy to see (even Garrett Hedlund had managed to become an interesting performer!), and the sense of tension and drama built into the very fabric of this story. Mudbound looks like a serious priority for movie fans at the tail end of 2017.

While the trailer is big and bold and built to grab your eyes, former /Film-er Angie Han saw Mudbound at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and walked away impressed by the small moments, the dynamics between the characters, and the performances. She also found its message timely for 2017:

So many films about America’s past treat our sins as though they’ve all been washed away. Mudbound, like the best of its ilk, knows that’s not the case. It lingers on small indignities and tiny moments of grace, on the millions of little ways that people lift each other up or push each other down, and those still resonate today, even as we pat ourselves on the back for being past the days of Jim Crow. I watched Mudbound just two days after Donald Trump was inaugurated as president, having run on the promise to return America to the spit-shined, sparkling good ol’ days, when white men ruled and black people knew their place. Mudbound is a reminder that even in those days, the truth of daily existence was a lot, well, muddier.

Mudbound is directed by Dee Rees, the director of Pariah and Bessie, and stars Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, Jonathan Banks, Mary J. Blige, Jason Mitchell, and Rob Morgan. It is scheduled to hit select theaters and Netflix on November 17, 2017, where it should act as ideal counter-programming to the bombastic Justice League.

Right now we’re in a bit of a dead zone for theatrical release,s with most movies released this month being neither good enough for a summer blockbuster release or hopeful enough for a debut during awards season. But plenty more of the latter movies are just around the corner, and Netflix has just debuted the first teaser trailer for what could turn out to be a major contender for Academy Awards.

Mudbound is an adaptation of Hillary Jordan’s prize-winning 2008 novel of the same name, which tells the story of two families both at odds and tied together while struggling to get by in the racially divided Deep South during World War II. The film features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Jason Clarke, Carey Mulligan, Rob Morgan, Mary J. Blige, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell and Jonathan Banks, all turning in award worthy performances. Get a look at the movie with the Mudbound trailer below.

Even if you didn’t know Mudbound was based on a novel, it feels like it through and through, complete with multiple narrators creating a William Faulkner-esque narrative that could easily fill a miniseries. But somehow, director Dee Rees (Pariah, Bessie) manages to keep everything in order and make every single moment of this drama compelling and harrowing.

Perhaps the most remarkable element of the film though are the performances from each and every actor in the cast. Garrett Hedlund turns in a surprisingly great turn as Jamie McAllan, a solider just returned home from the war, struggling with PTSD. Jason Mitchell shines as Ronsel Jackson, a fellow soldier who has coped a little better with life after the war and becomes unlikely friends with Jamie, despite the racist warnings from his grandfather (Jonathan Banks).

But the most surprising performance comes from Mary J. Blige, who is not only nearly unrecognizable in this movie, but delivers an Oscar-worthy turn as Florence Jackson. The Grammy-winning singer has dabbled in acting here and there, but she’s never given us a breakthrough performance like this. There will undoubtedly be a major campaign for her to get some recognition from the Academy this year.

Mudbound is a complex family drama weaving a rich tapestry of social struggles, complicated relationships, and intense drama. This could be Netflix’s big awards contender this year, and hopefully it ends up getting more attention than Beasts of No Nation did. Mudbound follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis and unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry (Jason Clarke), his wife Laura (Carey Mulligan) struggles to keep the faith in her husband’s losing venture. Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson (Rob Morgan, Mary J. Blige) — sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations — struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face.

The war upends both families’ plans as their returning loved ones, Jamie McAllan (Garrett Hedlund) and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell), forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live.

Mudbound hits Netflix and select theaters on November 17, 2017.
