President Joe Biden's improved political fortunes appear to be drowning out talk of an intraparty primary challenge in 2024, according to The Washington Post.
In recent months, Biden has signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act, a $ 52 billion chips-funding bill, and bipartisan gun control legislation, breaking part of the filibuster logjam that in recent years has become increasingly common in the Senate.
Fuel prices, which surged to over $ 5 a gallon earlier this summer, are averaging around $ 3.79 nationally as of September 4, per AAA.
And a recent Wall Street Journal poll showed Biden's approval rating at 45%, a welcome sign for the White House, as the president's numbers had lagged in the high 30s and low 40s for nearly a year.
But the diminished chatter surrounding a 2024 primary challenge — at least for now — allows the White House to focus on the midterms as the president reportedly plans to launch his reelection bid after the contests.
Former President Donald Trump, who has teased a run since he left the White House, is also planning to make his 2024 plans known in the coming months. And with Trump reportedly playing a critical role in campaigning for Republicans this fall, he will continue to provide a stark contrast to the Biden White House.
Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California said months ago that the party needed to stick together and stop dividing itself over the minutiae of congressional legislation and instead sell what Biden has signed into law.
Some Democrats, frustrated by what they saw as inaction regarding the president's agenda, floated new potential standard bearers, which included Govs. Gavin Newsom of California and J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — in addition to Vice President Kamala Harris.
But Khanna, a progressive who enjoys a strong relationship with the Biden White House, had long dismissed such talk.
"When I was out there saying I support the president's reelection six months ago, I was getting criticized, and now many other people are saying that. They're recognizing we need to stop the internal firing squad and start bragging about what we've done," he told The Post. "Most people understand the stakes of 2024 and understand that weakening Joe Biden is just strengthening Donald Trump."
"This is not the time for political opportunism of trying to do clever ploys and floating your name. This is the time for us to rally around the president's reelection," he added.
While there have been reports of some lingering concerns about Biden's age, as he will turn 82 years old shortly after Election Day 2024, he remains committed to running for reelection.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona), the key figure behind the White House’s decision to reopen an FBI investigation into SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh, has said he would have not called for the probe if he hoped to get reelected.
Flake has been serving as a Senator for Arizona since 2013. In October last year, he announced that he would not by vying for the seat in the looming congressional elections in November.
In an interview to CBS’s “60 minutes” the outgoing senator admitted that he would not have risked his victory chances by siding with Senate Judicial Committee Democrats in calling for the FBI investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh, if he still wanted to keep his congressional job.

“Not a chance,” Flake admitted, adding that he would have had reason whatsoever to deviate from the party line.
There’s no value to reaching across the aisle. There’s no currency for that anymore. There’s no incentive.
The elevator incident was the turning moment that prompted him to join Democrats in their calls for the FBI probe, he said.
Midway through the Friday Senate Judicial Committee hearing, Flake was cornered by women who said they were sexual assault survivors and pleaded with him to delay the Kavanaugh vote.
The lawmaker admitted that he was startled by the story of the woman who confronted him, saying he had a “feeling that this was history” and he made a decision on the spot.
“I don’t think anybody expected – you know, what happened on Friday to happen and I can’t say that I did either.”
“I just knew that we couldn’t move forward, that I couldn’t move forward without hitting the pause button,” he said, adding that he believes that the Kavanaugh saga is “ripping the country apart.”
Flake’s confession has triggered a torrent of angry responses from conservatives on Twitter, accusing the Senator of being a “coward” and a “weak person” who would choose high approval ratings over his constituents.

Confirms @JeffFlake is a REAL flake w/NO guts-integrity-principles. So much for his "Conservative With A Conscience" book & self-label

You are a weak person. HTF did you get elected as a Republican?
Oh, and I wouldn’t try anymore elevator jokes. Flop!

“Senator Flake, could you have done this if you were running for re-election?” “No, absolutely not.” This is where we are, a #twoparty, #zerosum political race to the bottom. No pretense of governing, just partisan warfare. Who cares about constituents—real people?! #letsbebetter

Following Flake’s call for an FBI probe, US President Donald Trump ordered the agency to reopen the investigation that would be limited to one week. The decision drew criticism from Democrats, accusing the White House of an attempt to micromanage the investigation by limiting its scope.
On Sunday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders denied the allegations that the administration has been interfering with the probe.
“We’re not micromanaging this process. It’s a Senate process. It has been from the beginning, and we’re letting the Senate continue to dictate what the terms look like,” Sanders said.
Trump also hit back against the allegations, while taking a swipe at Democrats, tweeting that “for them, it will never be enough.”
Wow! Just starting to hear the Democrats, who are only thinking Obstruct and Delay, are starting to put out the word that the “time” and “scope” of FBI looking into Judge Kavanaugh and witnesses is not enough. Hello! For them, it will never be enough – stay tuned and watch!

The poll indicated that 28% of registered voters in Michigan, a state Trump flipped in the 2016 presidential election, say he deserves a second term. Some 62% of voters polled believe it’s time to replace Trump, the poll found.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

President Donald Trump has trialled his 2020 re-election slogan at a rally in Pennsylvania, vowing to ‘Keep America Great’. He reiterated that he was joking about making himself president for life.
“Keep America Great!” will be Trump’s slogan at the next election, whether or not he faces Oprah Winfrey at the hustings, he told the steelmaking community on Saturday night. The president said he was “almost positive” rehashing his 2016 slogan “make America great again” (MAGA) was out of the question, as he would already have achieved that after being president for four years.
Trump also laid into the mainstream media, for the second time that day, for highlighting his supposedly light-hearted comments to a fundraising dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida a week earlier, to prove he had a “dictatorial attitude.”
At the private event in Florida, Trump reportedly praised China’s ruling Communist Party for lifting presidential term limits, claiming that it had made his Beijing counterpart XI Jinping “president for life.
“I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll give that a shot some day,” he said, according to CNN sources. “I was joking,” Trump insisted in Pennsylvania on Saturday. “Fake news! Fake. Horrible.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican U.S. Representative Ed Royce said on Monday he will not run for a 14th term representing his southern California district, a seat that could be a key to Democratic efforts to win back control of the House of Representatives.
Royce is the latest in a wave of some 30 House Republicans who have announced they are retiring, running for another office or resigning. Democrats need to win 24 seats in the November mid-term elections to retake the majority in the House, which Republicans have controlled since 2011.
Royce, chairman of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee, was first elected in 1992 and has been easily re-elected since.
But political analysts have rated his district, comprising suburbs southeast of Los Angeles, as a battleground in the November elections, after voters there backed Democrat Hillary Clinton with a margin of 9 percentage points over Republican Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race.
Royce is in his last year as committee chairman, because Republicans in Congress impose term limits on committee leadership.
He is the eighth out of the 22 Republican House committee chairmen to announce he is leaving Congress this election cycle. Most face term limits.
If Republicans maintain control of the House, Representative Michael McCaul, a foreign affairs committee member who is currently chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, is seen as a possible new leader of the foreign affairs panel, congressional aides said.
McCaul aides did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
If Democrats were to win control of the House, Representative Eliot Engel, currently foreign affairs ranking Democrat, is expected to take the gavel.
In a statement, Engel praised Royce, “a dear friend,” for working with Democrats to produce bipartisan legislation.
As chairman, Royce has helped pass new sanctions on Iran, North Korea and Russia, increased pressure on Syria’s government and pushed for aid to Ukraine.
Royce said in a statement he wanted to focus his last year leading the foreign affairs panel “on the urgent threats facing our nation,” which he listed as the North Korean and Iranian governments, Russian efforts to “weaponize information to fracture western democracies” and terrorist threats in Africa and Central Asia.
His announcement came the same day Trump sent to the Senate his nomination of Royce’s wife, Marie, as an assistant secretary in the State Department, which is overseen by the foreign affairs panel.

“After reflection, I have decided not to seek a second four-year term,” Zeid Ra’ad Hussein said in the email addressed to his staff, which was seen by Foreign Policy and AFP. “To do so, in the current geopolitical context, might involve bending a knee in supplication; muting a statement of advocacy; lessening the independence and integrity of my voice – which is your voice.”
The announcement comes a day after the human rights chief expressed shock over Israel’s use of force against the Palestinians; in a crackdown, the roots of which, “can sadly be traced directly back to the unilateral US announcement on the status of Jerusalem.” Stating that Washington’s decision to move its Israeli capital to Jerusalem was “dangerously provocative,” Hussein added that Trump’s initiative goes against “international consensus.”
It’s not the first time that the UN’s human rights chief has criticized the American leader, who after assuming office, is seen trying to reshape the global political environment, focussing particularly on the Middle East and the Korean peninsula. Even before Trump was elected, Hussein warned that the Republican’s “deeply unsettling and disturbing” point of view “will be dangerous from an international point of view.”
Hussein expressed strong criticism of the US leader in October after listening to Trump’s speech at the United Nations. Trump’s rhetoric at the General assembly, he said, was “one part chauvinistic nationalism, one part balance-of-power swordplay and a crumbling adherence to law.”
“The combination of all of this, in the early part of the 20th century, led to the annihilation of millions of people,” Hussein warned, recalling the “calamity of two world wars and the Holocaust.”
In his letter to his colleagues, Hussein painted a “gloomy assessment of the state of human rights one year after US President Donald Trump came to power,” FP noted. The UN human rights commissioner said America’s new foreign policy disregarded human rights and “reintroduced torture as a tool to extract information.”
The FP report also noted, citing diplomatic sources, that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had allegedly “urged Zeid to tone down his critics of Trump, fearing that it could risk losing US support for the United Nations.”
Trump has indeed threatened to cut aid to UN member states who vote against the US at Thursday’s rare emergency UN General Assembly session. “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday.
Hussein said he would focus his final months in office on promoting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through “mobilization and defiance, pushing back the many trends across the world that seem to negate and deny the value of human rights.”
“There are many months ahead of us: months of struggle, perhaps, and even grief – because although the past year has been arduous for us, it has been appalling for many of the people we serve,” he wrote.

Nevada Democratic Rep. Ruben Kihuen announced Saturday that he would not seek reelection amid sexual harassment allegations from his former campaign finance director.
In early December, BuzzFeed News first reported the allegations of the former staffer, who said Kihuen repeatedly harassed and made sexual advances toward her last year during his campaign, leading her to quit after only a few months on the job.
A second woman then told the Nevada Independent earlier this week that Kihuen had repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances on her when she was a lobbyist and he was a state senator.
“I want to state clearly again that I deny the allegations in question,” Kihuen said in a statement on Saturday. “I am committed to fully cooperating with the House Ethics Committee and I look forward to clearing my name.”
“However, the allegations that have surfaced would be a distraction from a fair and thorough discussion of the issues in a reelection campaign,” he said. “Therefore, it is in the best interests of my family and my constituents to complete my term in Congress and not seek reelection.”
In the aftermath of the BuzzFeed News report, there had been swift calls for the freshman Democrat to step down: Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Ben Ray Luján called for his resignation when presented with the details of the article and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Kihuen should resign several hours later, but he refused to do so.
Kihuen’s decision not to seek reelection comes less than two weeks after Rep. John Conyers, the longest serving member of Congress, resigned over sexual harassment allegations first revealed by BuzzFeed News.
The Nevada Democrat was elected to Congress last November and is a long-time protégé of former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Kihuen is a DREAMer and often talked about his immigrant experience on the campaign trail and in Congress, pushing for legislation to protect those, like himself, who were brought to the US illegally as children. The subject was also central to his speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2016. Before entering Congress, Kihuen spent a decade in the Nevada legislature.
Kihuen’s former campaign finance director, Samantha (whose last name BuzzFeed News withheld), alleged that Kihuen propositioned her for dates and sex despite repeated rejections. She said he touched her thighs twice without consent.
In a statement to BuzzFeed News for the initial story, Kihuen said:
The staff member in question was a valued member of my team. I sincerely apologize for anything that I may have said or done that made her feel uncomfortable. I take this matter seriously as it is not indicative of who I am. I was raised in a strong family that taught me to treat women with the utmost dignity and respect. I have spent my fifteen years in public service fighting for women’s equality, and I will continue to do so.
Later the same day, Kihuen’s office sent out a new statement adding that he wanted to “make it clear that I don’t recall any of the circumstances.” His office didn’t respond to a BuzzFeed News inquiry asking whether he denied the events occurred as described.
Dozens who have been around Kihuen over the years described to BuzzFeed News a pattern of behavior from him that was teetering on the brink of misconduct. In interviews with at least 30 men and women who have worked in Nevada politics in Carson City and in Las Vegas, Kihuen was repeatedly described as a “playboy” whose reputation for constantly pursuing and flirting with young women was an “open secret.”
One former Nevada State Assembly intern said in settings with alcohol, she routinely saw Kihuen making inappropriate jokes and at times giving unwanted, long hugs and touches.
“Ruben tends to be very touchy-feely and flirtatious to begin with,” the intern said. “The more you just let it go, the farther along he gets.”
Kihuen’s full statement:
Nothing is more important to me than my family and serving my constituents. It is the greatest honor of my life to represent Nevada’s Fourth District as a Member of the United States House of Representatives.
The support and encouragement of my constituents provides me with the strength and guidance to represent Nevada to the best of my abilities.
I want to state clearly again that I deny the allegations in question. I am committed to fully cooperating with the House Ethics Committee and I look forward to clearing my name.
Due process and the presumption of innocence are bedrock legal principles which have guided our nation for centuries, and they should not be lost to unsubstantiated hearsay and innuendo.
However, the allegations that have surfaced would be a distraction from a fair and thorough discussion of the issues in a reelection campaign. Therefore, it is in the best interests of my family and my constituents to complete my term in Congress and not seek reelection.
