The beach is officially closed: ABC has cancelled the Poppy Montgomery summer drama Reef Break after one season, TVLine has learned. A network source confirms that ABC will not be ordering more episodes and the series is not planned to return. Montgomery (Without a Trace, Unforgettable) starred as pro surfer Cat Chambers, a former smuggler and con artist who worked as a fixer for the government of the fictional Reef Island. The supporting cast included Ray Stevenson, Desmond Chiam, Melissa Bonne and Tamala Shelton. Filmed on the Gold Coast of Australia, Reef Break was originally produced for French broadcaster M6 and was later picked up to join ABC’s summer schedule, premiering on June 20. Through its 13-episode freshman run, Reef Break averaged under 2 million weekly total viewers along with a 0.31 demo rating, ranking last on both counts among ABC summertime fare. It also trailed both of ABC’s scripted offerings from the previous summer, Take Two (which averaged 2.7 mil and a 0.42) and The Last Defense (2.1 mil/0.43). The season finale, which will now serve as a series finale, aired on Sept. 13. TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news. Will you miss hanging ten with Reef Break? Join us in the comments below and share your thoughts on the cancellation. Cat Chambers, Reef Break‘s pro surfer and grifter-turned-fixer, is on the run while yet tackling her toughest case yet — to clear her own name — as ABC’s summertime escapade comes to a close on a special night, this Friday at 9/8c. Set in Nimitz Bay, a community on the fictional U.S. territory of Reef Island, Reef Break stars Poppy Montgomery as the aforementioned Cat, who heading into the finale was tricked into helping spring onetime cohort Doug O’Casey out of the clink. Now, Cat is on the lam, believed to have returned to her criminal ways. TVLine presented Montgomery with some of our burning questions (Is she doing any of her own surfing? Why not let Grant Bowler use his real-life accent? Where did this show come from??), and invited her to tease the finale’s many cliffhangers — which, if France cooperates, could be resolved in a possible Season 2. TVLINE | What is the Reader’s Digest version of the origin of this show? Because when ABC announced it for their schedule, it seemed to come out of nowhere. TVLINE | It always took place in a fictional U.S. territory where cars apparently have steering wheels on either side? TVLINE | Talk about filming it in Gold Coast, Queensland. What did that mean for you, as an Australian? It must have been a dream. TVLINE | Like, maybe one of Charlie’s Angels surfed when they went undercover or something? Well, I sort of had this idea for a while about a surfing badass criminal chick on a tropical island. We pitched it and sold it to France, and then ABC Network heard about it and picked it up and suddenly it was 13 episodes, and off we went. It was pretty wild.
Exactly. We made up this island that was somewhere in the South Pacific, but a US territory. We wanted to make it fictional so that we didn’t have to deal with any real baggage or politics of an island that existed. We wanted to create a world where we could almost do anything. It’s a bit like Fantasy Island.
I mean, it literally was. I love surfing. I love tropical islands. I love riding jet skis and boats too fast. It was perfect. And I got to play a thief, which is far more in sync with my personality than playing a cop. I’m much more of a criminal than I am a cop-type, I think.
TVLINE | That’s the sense I get watching the show, that this must be among your all-time favorite roles. Like you said, you’re edgy, you’re sexy, you’re flirty, you’re funny, you’re smart….
It’s exactly what I wanted to do. We wanted it to be a wink, and a kind of “TV beach read” for the summer. It’s fun and a bit fantastic. It’s not meant to be heavy or win Emmys. It’s mean to be a sort of homage to all of the shows that I loved that I used to watch in Australia 10 years after you got them in America. [Laughs] But you never got to see girls. I was a young surfer in Australia and I would watch these guys drive fast cars and surf and everything, and I was like, “Why aren’t there any women doing that?” I really can’t think of another female surfer on television ever.
Yeah, or you had Gidget on that giant board. It was never a fierce competitive surfer, and the women in female surfing are badass and I think they need to be represented.
Oh, none of the big waves are me. None of the standup. That’s my amazing stunt double, Angie. I got a black eye when I was surfing here in Malibu right before we started filming and they were like, “Nope, you’re not going to surf on any wave. It’s too much of a risk.” The other thing is, truly, I’m not that good. Angie’s amazing, she is truly fierce. She can do flips and all of that in the air. I’m deeply mediocre when it comes to surfing.
I did pop it and catch it! I did the flip at the end. But I couldn’t do [those tricks] on a skateboard. I’d kill myself!
TVLINE | I find the casting of Ray Stevenson interesting and refreshing, because here’s this mountain of a man with salt-and-pepper hair pulled back into a ponytail. And you don’t see guys like that on TV. I feel like this is a guy who has lived a life.
Yeah. We wanted him to have that sort of Russell Crowe, brutish feel to him, and Ray was the perfect guy for it. He’s like a father figure, in a lot of ways, to Cat, who has daddy issues, clearly. She married the father figure in her life and we wanted that to be real. Then you’ve got Des[mond Chiam as Wyatt], who’s literally the opposite. I mean, he looks about 22. He’s beautiful. Then we’ve got Rob Collins, who’s playing Doug O’Casey…. In the finale, there’s a lot of stuff with Cat and Doug. That’s a love triangle situation that kind of reveals itself in the last two episodes.
And then it veers off again. It might be a hexagon, because Jake is also sleeping with Ana Dumont, the governor. There’s a lot of cross-pollinating going on!
TVLINE | Petra is totally your long-lost daughter, right? A kid Cat put up for adoption or something?
That’s what we should do! That is not a bad idea. You’re brilliant, actually, because we’ve been talking about that. That’s so funny.
We never wanted it to look like we were shooting in Australia, unlike Harrow, which is set in Australia. We wanted to show an American territory. But Grant slips his accent in and out there. He has kind of a combo accent.
TVLINE | What else can you tease about the finale on Friday night?
Like I said, there are quite a lot of surprises between Cat and her supposed nemesis, Doug O’Casey. Someone goes missing, and someone gets kidnapped…. There’s a lot going on. There are a lot of cliffhangers and it’s a bit of a wild ride.
Oh, yeah. Like five. There are a lot of lives in jeopardy, I will just say that. Like a lot. I’m not sure how we’re going to deal with it all in Season 2.
You know, I think we’ve got to take a look at the programming of it; there were so many preemptions and blackouts that it’s hard to get a real read on what the numbers were. Also, you get a lot of bang for your buck on this show, meaning it looks beautiful and we are doing it very “efficiently” when it comes to the price. But I also think it’s one of those shows that, given the right exposure, who wouldn’t enjoy it? It’s a fun ride. I think it’s just got to find it’s legs a little. And it’s an international co-production, so once it airs in France, we’ll get a real sense of what it looks like. If it’s a monster hit in France…
It’s the same Without a Trace an Unforgettable dubber. I’m telling you, she sounds exactly like me and it looks like her words match my mouth even though she’s speaking French and I’m speaking English. I have yet to meet her but I’m kind of in awe of her.

Humans figure out whether to develop as males or females based on the presence of a single gene on the Y chromosome. But that’s just one of a dizzying number of ways that plants and animals determine their sex. A large group of reptiles, including crocodilians and many species of turtles, use the ambient temperature. If the eggs are above a certain temperature during a critical period in their incubation, the animal will be likely to develop as a female; below that temperature, you’re more likely to get a male.
And that, in a world where temperatures are rising, is a problem.
A new study of sea turtles that live near the Great Barrier Reef has found that populations closest to the equator, where the temperatures are warmest, have been producing over 99 percent females for two decades. While turtles have obviously weathered changing climates in the past, the current rate of change, coupled with sea turtles’ long life span, raise concerns about how well they’ll cope with our current warming.

MELBOURNE – Australia is building a superhighway offering free charging stations in a bid to boost use of electric vehicles, the northeastern state of Queensland said on Thursday, most of its route fringed by the Great Barrier Reef tourist attraction.
The move comes as governments around the world regulate to cut emissions by boosting the use of electric vehicles.
Britain this week said it would ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2040, following France. The mayors of Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have said they plan to ban diesel vehicles from city centers by 2025.
Australia’s new superhighway, an 1,800-km (1,118-mile) stretch of mostly coastal road alongside the Great Barrier Reef, will be supplied by renewable energy, State Minister Steven Miles said in a statement.
“This project is ambitious, but we want as many people as possible on board the electric vehicle revolution, as part of our transition to a low-emissions future,” he added.
Eighteen towns and cities will make up the first phase of the superhighway, which will become operational in the next six months, making it possible to drive an electric vehicle from the state’s southern border to the far north, he added.
The road runs from Coolangatta on the border of neighboring New South Wales to the city of Cairns, in Australia’s far north.
Brisbane-based charging station maker Tritium will supply most of the project’s charging stations, a spokeswoman for the state government said, with Schneider Electric supplying the rest.
Tritium’s commercial director, Paul Sernia, confirmed the company had supplied its products.
The government’s early support for the project is a signal to the market that Queensland is serious about electric vehicles, said Behyad Jafari, chief executive of Australia’s Electric Vehicle Council.
The step “provides certainty to unlock investment to grow our economy and create new, high skilled jobs,” he added.
Australia’s uptake of electric vehicles lags other nations, but is set to increase to around 12,000 by 2020 and about 1 million by 2030, Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg said in May.
Australia’s management of the Great Barrier Reef has come under sustained criticism amid the biggest ever coral die-off as a result of the strongest El Nino in 20 years, a weather event scientists say is exacerbated by climate change.
More than 2 million people visit the reef each year, generating more than A$ 2 billion ($ 1.53 billion) in tourism dollars, an Australian government report showed in 2016.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization had voted not to add Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to its list of sites in danger. The baffling decision was taken despite the reef’s currently perilous state, where back-to-back coral bleaching events threaten more than two thirds of its length. Even worse, is that UNESCO published a paper just last month, saying that if nothing was done, the Reef would die in a century. The cause of this spectacular act of cognitive dissonance is political, thanks to hard lobbying from Australia’s government.
The Great Barrier Reef is a wonder of the natural world, and is pegged to benefit Australia’s economy to the tune of $ 56 billion. If it was added to the danger list, the country would be forced to take drastic action to protect it, which could threaten its short-term profitability. Not to mention that Australia is building a $ 4 billion coal mine which will ship tonnes of climate change-causing material through the Reef itself. Building the mine, and cutting a shipping canal through the reed to support it, is likely to cause extraordinary harm to the local ecosystem.
As Reuters explains, UNESCO’s decision prevents “political embarrassment and potential damage to the country’s lucrative tourism industry.” It also serves as an endorsement of Australia’s current plan to maintain the Reef’s ecosystem through its own, lighter-touch methods. UNESCO did, however, say that it held some concerns about the health of the Reef, urging the country to improve water quality in the surrounding area. Although, given that climate change is the biggest factor as to its current condition, backing a coal project next door will seem like adding insult to injury.

]]>The second consecutive year of mass coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef highlights the wider global problem affecting many of the word’s marine habitats. What do the experts say, and what can ordinary travelers do?
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the period between 2014 and 2016 saw the longest ever recorded instance of global bleaching, affecting 90 per cent of coral on the Great Barrier Reef.
After an aerial survey of the area between Townsville and Cairns on Australia’s east coast, experts reported severe bleaching in offshore reefs in this particular area, which had escaped bleaching the year before. “Mass bleaching is occurring on the Great Barrier Reef for the second consecutive year,” confirmed Dr David Wachenfeld, director of reef recovery at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).
While the future may look bleak—reports suggest 90 per cent of the world’s coral will die by 2050—it’s not a lost cause. The GBRMPA’s director of reef recovery Dr David Wachenfeld says, “Not all bleached coral will die. As we saw last year, bleaching and mortality can be highly variable across the 344,000 square kilometer Marine Park—an area bigger than Italy.”
“We’re doing all we can to reduce illegal fishing and other activity that harms the Reef, including taking increasingly serious action against offenders,” adds their field management director Richard Quincey. The GBRMPA also work with scientific organizations on other solutions, such as coral re-seeding.
The impact of coral bleaching has even touched the art world. At the 57th Biennale di Venezia 2017, the sculptor, environmentalist and underwater photographer Jason deCaires Taylor launched his new exhibition of photographs and sculptures centered around coral bleaching; his work can be seen from 12th May to 27th November 2017 at the Official National Pavilion of Grenada. This Caribbean island was home to his first underwater art installation in 2006, a collection which now extends to over 800 underwater sculptures around the world.
Visitors can help by ensuring they don’t fish in protected areas, booking trips with principled operators, and reporting illegal activity. If you’re doing motorized water sports, slow down near reefs, islands and coastal areas, and try not to anchor or beach on corals or seagrass beds. Take all rubbish with you—even rubbish that isn’t yours—and do not take shells home as souvenirs. The mantra of ‘collect memories and take photos’ is a good one to go by.
Divers and snorkelers can prevent reef damage by being properly weighted, securing their dive gear and maintaining good buoyancy so nothing touches the reef. Not kicking up sand or suddenly changing direction in the water, and giving enough space to free-swimming sea creatures such as dolphins, turtles and sea snakes also helps keep the reefs in good condition. The GBRMPA also offers advice on how to choose a high standard activity operator, all of which are certified by EarthCheck or Ecotourism Australia.
Equally, behavior away from the reef is important. Reducing energy consumption in everyday life keeps greenhouse gas emissions down, conserving water decreases the amount of wastewater entering the ocean, and reducing waste ensures less debris ends up on our reefs, protecting these habitats for future generations—both in and out of the water.
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is dying due to changes in ocean temperature, and conventional attempts to save it (such as improving water quality or limiting fishing) haven’t panned out. However, scientists might have an unusual approach that works: tweaking the clouds above the reef. They’re investigating the possibility of lowering the ocean temperature by artificially brightening clouds, increasing their ability to reflect heat away from the sea below. It’s not as far fetched a concept as it sounds.
Most likely, this would work by spraying salt particles that are just large and abundant enough to brighten low-level marine clouds that tend to hover around coastlines. The salt would promote droplet formation and lead to larger, denser clouds. The approach could scale up as needed, and it’s fairly eco-friendly — the biggest concern may be the ships you’d need to brighten clouds along the Great Barrier Reef, which runs for more than 1,400 miles.
Whether or not such a project goes ahead is still far from certain. The research team is starting climate modelling in May to determine whether or not brightening would make enough of a practical difference, and there’s no guarantee that it does. It’s not clear that there are enough of the right clouds in the area. And of course, any effort on this scale would require significant government support to stand a chance.
If the technique does work, though, it wouldn’t necessarily be limited to coral fields. The Summen Project, a university-backed study of how climate affects redwood trees, is exploring the possibility of using a similar artificial fog to give redwoods moisture and protect them against climate change. The techniques developed here could theoretically help in many situations where water vapor is key to protecting nature.

An unprecedented amount of coral bleaching for two consecutive years has severely damaged two-thirds of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, aerial surveys have shown.
Scientists at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies recorded severe coral bleaching for the second time in 12 months after surveying the Great Barrier Reef’s entire 2,300km-long (1,500) miles ecosystem.
“This is the fourth time the Great Barrier Reef has bleached severely – in 1998, 2002, 2016, and now in 2017. Bleached corals are not necessarily dead corals, but in the severe central region we anticipate high levels of coral loss,” said Dr. James Kerry of James Cook University.
“It takes at least a decade for a full recovery of even the fastest growing corals, so mass bleaching events 12 months apart offers zero prospect of recovery for reefs that were damaged in 2016.”

The study found that while the northern third of the reef experienced the most severe bleaching last year, the middle third experienced the most intense coral bleaching this year, resulting in catastrophic damage of the natural wonder of the world.
“The combined impact of this back-to-back bleaching stretches for 1,500km (900 miles), leaving only the southern third unscathed,” said Prof. Terry Hughes who undertook the aerial surveys in both 2016 and 2017.
“The bleaching is caused by record-breaking temperatures, driven by global warming. This year, 2017, we are seeing mass bleaching, even without the assistance of El Niño conditions.”
The 2017 survey of the reef covered more than 8,000km (5,000 miles) and nearly 800 coral reefs that matched the 2016 aerial surveys. Last year, Climate Central found bleaching has hit 93 percent of the reef, with 80 percent enduring severe bleaching.

The mass bleaching, coupled with the destructive Tropical Cyclone Debbie in March, has struck a previously undamaged section of the reef.
“Clearly the reef is struggling with multiple impacts,” explains Prof. Hughes. “Without a doubt the most pressing of these is global warming. As temperatures continue to rise the corals will experience more and more of these events: 1°C of warming so far has already caused four events in the past 19 years.”
“Ultimately, we need to cut carbon emissions, and the window to do so is rapidly closing.”
