Opera has unveiled a new look and feel for its browser. Expected to ship in version 59, codenamed “Reborn 3” (R3), the new appearance adopts the same square edges and clean lines that we’ve seen in other browsers, giving the browser a passing similarity to both Firefox and Edge.

The principles of the new design? “We put Web content at center stage,” the Opera team writes on its blog. The design is pared down so that you can browse “unhindered by unnecessary distractions.” Borders and dividing lines have been removed, flattening out parts of the browser’s interface and making them look more uniform and less eye-catching. The new design comes with the requisite dark and light modes, a welcome trend that we’re glad to see is being widely adopted.

Web-centric is not a bad principle for an application such as a browser, where the bulk of the functionality and interest comes from the pages we’re viewing rather than the browser itself. At first blush, I think that Opera has come up with something that looks good, but it does feel like an awfully familiar design rationale.

Mozilla has given its privacy-focused mobile browser, the Firefox Focus, a makeover for both iOS 12 and the Google’s newest mobile OS Android Pie. Both versions come with elements to fit each mobile platform’s aesthetic — the one for iOS 12, for instance, has menus with more rounded corners. The one optimized for Android Pie, on the other hand, comes with a customized URL bar and a simplified settings menu. In addition, the latest versions now also display tips on how to use the browser on their homescreen. Plus, they now come with the ability to suggest key phrases when you type in the address bar.

Since Firefox Focus was created with a, well, focus on privacy, though, the search suggestions feature is switched off by default. You don’t have to provide search engines with any data on your usage if you don’t want to. But if you want to switch the feature on, you simply have to go to Settings and toggle it on. If you’re on iOS, you’ll also be able to use Siri shortcuts to set and open a favorite website and to launch the browser. The updated Firefox Focus is now available on iTunes and Google Play.

Gmail.com is soon getting its first redesign in seven years, and with that new look comes some new features. We’ve already heard about new side panels for Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Google Tasks, and now we’re getting word of another new feature: self-destructing emails.

TechCrunch has screenshots detailing the feature from the pre-release version of Gmail. In the compose window, there’s a new lock icon called “Confidential Mode.” When clicked, a message pops up saying, “Options to forward, download or copy this email’s contents and attachments will be disabled.” The sender can then pick an expiration date for the email, and optionally require an SMS passcode to open the email. The compose window also switches to a blue color scheme, letting the user know they’re not just sending a normal message.

According to TechCrunch, Snapchat users have now started to see these changes.

The photo-based social network is now displaying Stories in reverse chronological order for some users, replacing the controversial redesign’s algorithmically sorted feed.

Showing the most recently shared Stories first in the feed makes them predictable and coherent to browse, since it allows users to check-in and see what it happening with their friends right now.

However, this type of reverse chronological order favours those who post frequently to the social network, burying other users at the bottom of the feed.

Snapchat’s move to algorithmic ranking in its big redesign earlier this year was in part designed to ensure users never missed Stories from those they interacted with on Snapchat the most – even if they posted far less frequently.

Facebook’s News Feed used a very similar algorithmic ranking method for a long time, and Instagram employed a similar technique when it moved away from a chronological feed two years ago.

Switching to algorithmic sorting helped Instagram and Twitter boost growth, likely why Snapchat made it part of the redesign.

However the move back to reverse chronological order should appease those who were against the changes introduced at the start of the year.

Snapchat has over 10 million daily users in the UK.

New leaked pictures have emerged of the Peugeot 508 2018.

The new Peugeot is not expected to be unveiled until the Geneva Motor Show 2018 on March 6th.

The pictures have revealed the car’s fairly extensive redesign.

It retains its saloon shape but the bonnet and front-end is more muscular and dominant in design.

Both the car’s exterior and interior are on display in the leaks.

Elements of the exterior are seemingly inspired by the low-down and muscular shape of the Instinct concept that debuted in 2017.

Inside the car seems inspired by bigger vehicles such as the.

The bonnet is wider and lower to the ground and features a new chrome grille which has sharper tips and is flanked by revamped headlamps.

Daytime running lights have been moved from just above the air intakes the slashes through the headlights, making way for a new diffuser and bumper.

At the rear is a futuristic strip light that stretches across the width of the boot lid.

Inside the car has been fitted with Peugeot’s i-Cockpit system which has previously been seen on a number of the company’s flagship cars including the 3008.

It replaces the instrument cluster behind the driver with a digital display and adds a large touchscreen infotainment system to the centre of the dashboard.

Engine options and performance specs are yet to be revealed, prices for the car are expected to come in a little over the current £25,340 starting price of the current model.

Apple is reportedly tweaking its e-book offering to better take on Amazon, the current leader of the digital book market. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple will release a revamped version of the iBooks app for iOS, which will be dubbed “Books,” that will have an interface more like the iOS 11 App Store, a Reading Now tab, and a separate section for audiobooks. There’s no official date for the debut of the new app, but it’s reportedly slated to be released in the coming months.

Limited details are known about the app, which is in testing right now. Bloomberg’s report describes it having a “simpler interface” that emphasizes books the user is currently reading. There’s also a new digital book store within the app that’s said to be similarly designed to Apple’s current App Store, which received a drastic redesign in iOS 11. That could mean that Apple plans to make discovering new books through the Books app easier, possibly with categorical tabs and book cover art throughout the digital store. Apple recently moved its audiobook offerings from the Music app to the iBooks app, but having a dedicated tab for audiobooks will make them more easily accessible for customers.

Apple has also reportedly hired a lead executive from Audible, the Amazon-owned audiobook platform, to help reinvigorate its e-book efforts. The iBooks app remains one of the few Apple programs that hasn’t received a significant update in years. That is likely due in part to a 2013 ruling by the U.S. Department of Justice covering fixed pricing for e-books in Apple’s iBooks store. Apple was fined $ 450 million.

There are new twists in the saga of the Ford Fusion, but the long-term future of the Blue Oval’s best-selling car remains unclear. The Detroit News got a hold of a letter sent to suppliers in November in which Ford says it is canceling a planned North American redesign for a 2020 Fusion, though that doesn’t necessarily mean the nameplate will go away.

The Detroit News, citing an unnamed source, also reports that the Fusion and Mondeo, its overseas sibling sedan, will remain part of the Ford stable for at least three or four years. It published a statement from Ford spokesman Mike Levine saying that the “Fusion remains an important part of the Ford lineup for years to come with even more new fresh features on the way. We will have more news to share in the future.”

Sales have been falling for the Fusion and cars in general for Ford, which, like other automakers, is adjusting to a shift in consumer preferences toward crossovers, SUVs and pickups. CEO Jim Hackett has been working to shift the product lineup accordingly and cut production costs.

The company on Wednesday reported that U.S. sales of the Fusion fell 21.1 percent in 2017 to 209,623 units, the third straight year of declining sales for the sedan. Including the Lincoln brand, Ford sold 595,390 cars last year, a 14.2-percent drop from 2016, while sales of SUVs and trucks both rose year over year to more than 1.99 million on the strength of models like the F-150 and the redesigned 2018 Expedition.

What a future Fusion could look like, if it does indeed survive, is open to interpretation. As we’ve recently written, the Fusion has suffered amid comparatively wider profit margins for crossovers and stronger competition from the newly redesigned Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. It should be noted, though, that the cancellation of a redesign doesn’t preclude the sort of heavy refresh Ford has frequently undertaken in the past in lieu of full model redo.

Adding to the uncertainty is Ford’s decision to move production of the Fusion and Mondeo to China from plants in Mexico and Spain in 2020 while saying it won’t export those China-built cars to the United States.
