Electronic Arts is getting ready to launch one of its biggest games of the year, the multiplayer shooter Star Wars: Battlefront II, which is coming out on November 17, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. But the buzz before its release has mostly been about criticism over its loot boxes and progression systems.

If you go to the Reddit page at r/StarWarsBattlefront, you’ll find a lot of players complaining about the shooter. Subscribers to EA Access are playing the game right now, and they’re finding out that unlocking some heroes can take a long time if you don’t want to spend any real money. An official EA Reddit account, EACommunityTeam, responded to a post called “Seriously? I paid 80$ to have Vader locked?” The comment has now become the most downvoted in Reddit’s history at -87,000 and climbing.

Here’s what EACommunityTeam said:

The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.

As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.

Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.

Most players see this, whatever EA intended, as a poor justification of a monetization plan meant to encourage people to spend money to speed up the process of unlocking heroes.

Until today, the most downvoted comment in Reddit history was from a user who comically asked for downvotes. It was at about -24,000. EA didn’t just beat the record. It crushed it.

The situation shows the challenge ahead of EA. The publisher has been trying to promote Battlefront II by focusing on how much more content it has over its predecessor, including a single-player campaign. But the narrative has gotten away from EA, with much of the talk around gaming circles focusing how Battlefront II is handling in-game currency, loot crates, and unlockables.

Reddit has previously had success cleaning up its act by banning hate communities, and now it’s expanding those crackdowns. The social site has widened its policies on violent content to forbid material that “encourages, glorifies, incites or calls for violence,” and has used that to ban numerous subreddits that have celebrated racist violence. Some of them were very small, but others had as many as 7,000 subscribers or weren’t exactly hiding their violent ideology, including /pol (an offshoot of 4chan’s notorious board), /Nazi and /far_right.

The stricter policy came after Reddit decided that its previous policy was “too vague,” and needed to be be “more clear and comprehensive.” It’s aware that this expanded approach to violent material could create problems when they encounter a gray area, but it’s stressing that it’ll take context into account when making judgment calls.

The move is bound to be helpful to both Reddit (which doesn’t want to spook advertisers) and its users (who put up with fewer hatemongers). However, it also raises a major question: who’s next? The policy theoretically gives Reddit the power to ban other toxic subreddits, but users are concerned that it won’t touch communities known to promote violence if they’re ‘too big’ (and thus pull in a lot of ad money), too political or could trigger retaliatory campaigns. We’ve asked Reddit if it can respond to those complaints, but there’s no doubt that redditors will be watching closely to see if the new policy is applied consistently.

Freedom of speech has traditionally been an issue of government and human rights. But more and more companies are providing platforms where anyone can potentially contribute some sort of speech, typically text. And those companies are finding that they face many of the same issues governments have: how to balance giving users the ability to express themselves freely against the possibility that they’ll post problematic content.

“Problematic” has various definitions. In some cases, it’s truly dangerous, like incitements to violence or false medical advice. And companies may find that they don’t want to be associated with expressions of racism, sexism, or other forms of prejudice. But can companies do anything if people use their service for broadcasting content that the companies don’t approve of?

A new study answers that question with a clear “yes.” Researchers looked at Reddit’s fight against hate speech, which saw it ban a variety of subreddits in 2015. The analysis suggests that the regular users of these subreddits toned down their language as they moved to other areas on the site. And a number of users who wanted to continue to share offensive opinions simply went to other services, making them someone else’s problem.

Data stored and shared on the Internet is almost universally cumulative. If the history of Internet information were a word-processor document, it would include an endless stream of new sentences, along with lots of “strikethrough” phrases (like this one) that reflects edits and updates without ever deleting the originals.

Reddit hosted an online experiment over April Fool’s weekend that was ultimately governed by the same rules. But on its face, “Place” was different. Archives and time-lapse videos will forever exist to show off how Place worked, but its special trick—that its contents, at any moment, would only contain a single here-and-now statement created by thousands of people—is not the kind of thing that an Internet archive or Google cache can easily recreate.

“Together, you can create something more”

On Friday, Reddit administrators uploaded a blank, 1,000×1,000 pixel canvas to the “reddit.com/r/place” subreddit. It included a message:

Amazon chief executive officer Jeff Bezos sent a memo to employees Monday stating the company’s opposition to the travel ban initiated by Donald Trump on Friday and offering the company’s “full support” to those affected.

“We are a nation of immigrants whose diverse backgrounds, ideas and points of view have helped us build and invent as a nation for over 240 years,” Bezos wrote.

He said Amazon’s Washington D.C. policy team is conveying this opposition to the Trump administration and the company will support a lawsuit that the Washington State attorney general is preparing.

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday curtailing travel to the U.S. by citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries. The American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU) filed suit against to fight the move and four federal court judges issued temporary stays on enforcement.

The Bezos memo follows up another email sent by Beth Galetti, the company’s vice president of human resources, sent over the weekend, telling Amazon employees who work or live in this country to refrain from international travel if they might be prevented from reentering because of the new restrictions.

Bezos’ memo echoes a choir of disagreement in tech. For instance, On Saturday, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella and Google chief executive Sundar Pichai, issued statements, expressing their opposition to Trump’s action.

Microsoft followed with another statement Sunday night, characterizing the executive order as “misguided and a fundamental step backwards.” It said there are ways to protect the public without “creating so much collateral damage to the country’s reputation and values.”

Google, Monday morning, announced a $ 4 million fund to help those affected by Trump’s immigration order. On Monday afternoon, the company’s employees staged a walkout in opposition to the ban.

 

Later on Monday, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian posted his response to what has occurred upon returning to the U.S. from Australia, where he watched his fiancee Serena Williams win the championship. His words are particularly poignant as he is the son of an undocumented immigrant from Germany and great-grandson of a man who escaped the Armenian genocide in 1915.

Per his post, the executive order:

is not only potentially unconstitutional, but deeply un-American. We are a nation of immigrants, after all. In the tech world, we often talk about a startup’s “unfair advantage” that allows it to beat competitors. Welcoming immigrants and refugees has been our country’s unfair advantage, and coming from an immigrant family has been mine as an entrepreneur.

While tech leaders were vocal in their opposition to the ban, executives in other industries were notably quieter on the issue.
