Winchester, the horror film starring Helen Mirren as heiress Sarah Winchester, arrives on digital and Blu-ray very soon. In anticipation of the home video release, we have an exclusive Winchester clip that takes you behind-the-scenes of the haunted house film.

You probably could’ve guessed this, but most of Winchester was shot on sets, not in the actual Winchester Mystery House. But the production behind the haunted house film worked diligently to recreate the real house for the film, and in the exclusive clip below, you can see just how much work went into recreating large portions of the real Winchester Mystery House.

Exclusive Winchester Clip

Winchester is based on the true story (only, not really) of Sarah Winchester and her mysterious, eccentric house. Legend has it that Winchester – heir to the Winchester rifle fortune – was forced to continually rebuild her strange house, or else face the wrath of some very pissed-off ghosts. Winchester was directed by The Spierig Brothers (Jigsaw, Predestination) and co-written by Tom Vaughan and The Spierig Brothers. The cast includes Helen Mirren, Jason Clarke, Sarah Snook, and Angus Sampson.

The clip above is an excerpt from the larger, longer featurette, “Driven by the Spirits: The Making of Winchester”, which will be available on the digital and Blu-ray release. Winchester arrives on digital April 17, 2018 and on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on May 1, 2018. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can also visit the real Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California – the spookiest city on earth!

The Winchester Mansion’s sinister secrets are revealed in Winchester, arriving on Digital April 17 and on Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital), DVD, and On Demand May 1 from Lionsgate. Directed by The Spierig Brothers (Jigsaw, Predestination) and co-written by Tom Vaughan and The Spierig Brothers, Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren (Best Actress, The Queen, 2006) stars as the infamous and eccentric heiress Sarah Winchester, who stops at nothing to protect her family from the evil spirits haunting them. The hair-raising thriller also stars Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Mudbound, Chappaquiddick), Sarah Snook (Steve Jobs, Predestination), Angus Sampson (Mad Max: Fury Road, Insidious), and newcomer Finn Scicluna-O’Prey (TV’s “True Story with Hamish & Andy”).

Inspired by true events, Winchester is set on an isolated stretch of land outside of San Francisco where there sits the world’s most haunted house. Seven stories tall with hundreds of rooms, the house has been under construction for decades. But heiress Sarah Winchester (Mirren) is not building for herself, for her niece (Snook), or for the troubled doctor (Clarke) she has summoned. She is building it as an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts.

The Winchester Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD includes a never-before-seen “making of” featurette, which includes cast and crew interviews.

Visual effects are getting better and better every day. While some didn’t quite buy the digital recreation of Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (not to mention have problems with the ethics of such a production element), it appears Blade Runner 2049 succeeded in a somewhat similar visual effects feat.

In Blade Runner 2049, we see the return of Sean Young as the exceptionally unique replicant named Rachel from the original Blade Runner. However, instead of merely bringing back Sean Young and de-aging her like Jeff Bridges in TRON: Legacy, director Denis Villeneuve opted to use a performance double and have the younger version of Sean Young recreated entirely with visual effects. See how they did it below, but beware of a bit of a spoiler regarding the nature of this character’s return in the movie.

In this breakdown of the recreation of Rachel, we see how a performance double was used on set, but a very carefully crafted digital double was used in the final cut. What’s impressive is that there are several shots from the original Blade Runner recreated with this digital double, and it’s almost impossible to tell them apart. This is easily one of the best digital doubles I’ve seen in any film, and it’s only going to get better.

The Moving Picture Company (MPC) visual effects studio didn’t leave Sean Young out in the wind though. They brought the actress in for scanning to use as a frame of reference for recreating every subtle movement of her face in the younger digital double, as evidenced by her quick appearance in the video. It’s a shame there wasn’t a more prominent role for her in the sequel though.

Fans are patiently waiting for a new trailer to satisfy their appetites for more footage from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Not only have we only see one teaser trailer so far, but we’re going to need something exciting to take our mind off the worrisome production of the Han Solo spin-off that is currently waiting to restart production with Ron Howard behind the camera, replacing the fired duo of Phil Lord & Chris Miller.

Helping to hold us over, we’ve gotten an 8-bit version of the quick trailer (or more accurately a 16-bit trailer) that debuted back in April at Star Wars Celebration, and now we have another interesting recreation of the teaser. New York City-based artist Wahyu Ichwandardi has used an Apple II computer from 1984 to create an 8-bit version of the trailer that is composed of 288 images that were transferred onto 48 individual floppy disks before being put into the video format you can watch below.

So how did Wahyu Ichwandardi create this on a 33-year old computer? In order to draw the layers for animation, he had to draw each of them by hand by way of plastic sheets that were held over the monitor for him to trace each from from the trailer. He did this by using the KoalaPad from the 1980s and an old bitmap paint program called Dazzle Draw. Here’s a look at his process for recreating the trailer (via Mashable):

That’s pretty damn cool. Even if you’re not a computer nerd, it’s cool to see images like this created on such an old machine. It just goes to show you how far we’ve come with computer graphics technology in a relatively short period of time. Now if we could just get a new Star Wars trailer for this guy to recreate, that would be awesome.

Since it’s Memorial Day, a lot of people are enjoying an extended weekend. Whether you’re one of those people chilling out at home or stuck at work trying to kill some time as everyone else outside the office has fun, we have a good way to kill some time.

Someone with a massive amount of time on their hands decided to recreate Terminator 2: Judgment Day in its entirety by using a modded version of the video game Grand Theft Auto V. It’s surprisingly well done, and for those who don’t have the time to sit through all of the real film’s running time, this version is only an hour long and still hits all the finer points of the film.

If seeing the Terminator 2: Judgment Day remake in Grand Theft Auto V sounds familiar, that’s because someone previously recreated the famous motorcycle and semi-truck chase scene in the video game. This new video has that scene too, but it goes much further in depth with the movie that surrounds it, even having the same opening credits. Like I said, it’s quite an impressive piece of work, and I hate to think how much time it took to finish.

This is the perfect way to pass the time while waiting for the rights to The Terminator franchise to revert back to James Cameron in 2018 so he can produce a new movie in the film series directed by Deadpool helmer Tim Miller with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as the iconic T-800 robot who went from villain to hero.

And to think, we were impressed when someone recreated just one sequence of the movie. But now a Russian crew has gone and remade a good portion of Terminator 2 inside Grand Theft Auto V, with a final runtime of just over an hour of footage.

Note that because the creators (Kramer’s Media) are Russian, lots of the dialogue here is a Russian dub, not the vocal track most of you will know the actual movie by (though the 1991 film‘s music, sound effects and shorter grunts remain).

They hit almost every highlight and classic scene here, though I’d have liked to see a storm come at the end there.
