The record-vying distributed denial-of-service attacks keep coming, with two mitigation services reporting they encountered some of the biggest data bombardments ever by threat actors whose tactics and techniques are constantly evolving.
On Monday, Imperva said it defended a customer against an attack that lasted more than four hours and peaked at more than 3.9 million requests per second (RPS).
In all, the attackers directed 25.3 billion requests at the target with an average rate of 1.8 million RPS. While DDoSes exceeding 1 million RPS are growing increasingly common, they typically come in shorter bursts that measure in seconds or a few minutes at most.

The celebratory Atlantic Division T-shirts were draped neatly over each player’s chair in the post-game locker-room.
The Toronto Raptors barely glanced at them.
On an historic night they clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, won the division title, and set a franchise record for regular-season wins, there was no celebrating. The Raptors were only looking forward.
“Journey’s not over. Next question,” Kyle Lowry put it bluntly, on their regular-season accomplishments.
Serge Ibaka scored a season-high 25 points to lift the Raptors to a 92-73 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday, Toronto’s 57th win of the season, and 33rd at the Air Canada Centre. Both topped the previous franchise highs set in the 2015-16 season.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers fell 132-130 to the Philadelphia 76ers, making it more likely that Toronto will meet nemesis LeBron James in the second round.
The Raptors (57-22) have three games left in the regular season before they embark on their fifth consecutive post-season, and coach Dwane Casey said now is not the time for reflection.
“It’s gratification but you’re not satisfied, that’s the way I like to put it,” Casey said. “We haven’t got to where our ultimate goal is.”
DeMar DeRozan added 12 points, while Jakob Poeltl finished with 10, and Lowry doled out nine assists.
Glenn Robinson had 12 points, Trevor Booker finished 11 points, and Canadian and former Raptors guard Cory Joseph scored six off the bench for the Pacers (47-33).
Playing in their Drake-inspired black and gold OVO jerseys, the Raptors led from the opening tipoff and, other than a second-quarter blip when they allowed the Pacers to pull within four points, they dominated for most of the night in front of a capacity Air Canada Centre crowd that included Drake.
They pulled away in the third quarter thanks largely to Ibaka, who shot a perfect 5-for-5 — including a pair of three-pointers — that put the Raptors ahead by 27 points. They took a 72-49 lead into the fourth.
The sizable lead allowed Casey to go to his bench for the final frame, giving the starters some much-appreciated rest before the playoffs begin on April 14.
A pair of Robinson threes midway through the fourth pulled the Pacers to within 17, but the visitors couldn’t put a significant dent in Toronto’s lead. As the clock ticked down the final seconds, the ACC crowd stood and applauded the Raptors’ regular-season record.
DeRozan said achieving the No. 1 seed shows “that once you put your mind toward something, work toward a goal, it can be accomplished.
“We did that. Now, we’ve got another goal that we want to reach as well,” DeRozan said. “So this gives us the confidence that we can do it and take it to another level.”
The Raptors’ magic number on the night was one — either a Toronto win or Boston loss Friday clinched them the No. 1 seed, and home court for the duration of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
The regular season played out in a series of step-by-step goals, DeRozan said, finally culminating in earning the top seed.
“That’s one of those goals that you fight for, you strive for,” he said. “That’s what motivates you, is to get there and understand you took care of business. We’ve got home court advantage throughout the playoffs so let’s use that to our advantage. Little things, step by step, that’s how we look at it.”
Casey scoffed when questioned about potentially resting players down the regular-season stretch, saying the team is only now rediscovering its rhythm after a handful of poor performances.
“That’s bullcrap. If you’ve been around the last couple of years, you’ve seen what totally shutting guys down for a few games does to their body,” Casey said. “You may rest a guy a few minutes, or whatever a game, but there won’t be anybody that’s going to be taking the rest of these next few games off, because we’re just now these last couple of games have got a sense of rhythm.
“So, what rest? I don’t know what guys’ minutes tonight were . . . Kyle was 28. What rest?”
A solid defensive effort saw the Raptors hold Indy to 22 per cent shooting in the first quarter and, when Poeltl scored on a reverse layup with less than a minute to go, Toronto went ahead by 17 points. The Raptors took a 26-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Pacers cut Toronto’s lead to just four points with a 10-0 run midway through the second, but a three by Lowry capped a mini Raptors run that sent them into halftime up 45-33.
The Raptors host Orlando on Sunday in their last regular-season home game.

Roughly an hour before Steve Schwarzman, the billionaire founder of private-equity giant Blackstone Group and occasional adviser to President Donald Trump, was set to deliver a speech in Nashville to a crowd of 3,000 at the National Conference on Education, he bemoaned the state of public education in the US.
“The world keeps moving faster and faster and the US is falling behind,” Schwarzman told Business Insider, calling out the country’s deficits in arming students with computer literacy, coding, and other skills that have grown increasingly important in the modern job economy. Black Panther is on track to make history — in more ways than one.
Marvel Studios’ first solo black superhero movie has been steadily gathering buzz through advance ticket sales, critical acclaim, and good old word-of-mouth…and the hype is starting to manifest in its box office tracking numbers. Early estimates for Black Panther‘s opening weekend box office put the film at a strong $ 120 million. But with anticipation growing at a breakneck speed, Black Panther tracking numbers have skyrocketed.
Black Panther is tracking for a massive opening weekend of $ 165 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That means that Black Panther could set records for the biggest opening ever in the month of February, blowing Deadpool‘s $ 152 million opening in 2016 out of the water.
Hollywood’s leading tracking service NRG initially forecast that Black Panther would open to $ 125 million domestically, but last week revised the number to $ 150 million. Now, in the week of the film’s release, the number has shot up by $ 15 million.
At $ 165 million, Black Panther would be close to cracking the top 10 biggest opening weekends domestically. The immense box office opening haul would place it above the entire The Dark Knight trilogy (The Dark Knight Rises opened highest at $ 160.9 million), the entire Hunger Games series (Hunger Games: Catching Fire at $ 158 million), and every Harry Potter film except for The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($ 169 million).
Black Panther could have the fourth highest opening for a Marvel film, lagging behind Captain America: Civil War‘s $ 179 million. But it would hew closely to Warner Bros.’ highest debut for a DC movie: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened to $ 166 million.
But to temper expectations, Disney insiders still expect Black Panther to open in the $ 75 million-$ 115 million range. A respectable amount, but not quite reflective of the movie’s fierce following. Black Panther now boasts a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, the best of any Marvel Studios movie, and has set records with pre-sale tickets.
So Black Panther is expected to do gangbusters Stateside, but what about internationally? The film’s worldwide box office haul is still in contention, as international audiences generally don’t flock to movies with all-black casts. But with the critical acclaim following the movie, and the character’s great reception in Captain America: Civil War, it could translate to international success. Black Panther will open in about 70 percent of the international marketplace this week. It will open later in Russia (February 22), Japan (March 1) and China (March 9).
Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther. The star-studded, majority-black cast is rounded out by Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
Black Panther opens in theaters on February 16, 2018.

ArcBlock I.C.O. Update
Registration for the Public Sale portion of ArcBlock’s I.C.O., scheduled to commence Feb. 3, attracted more than 25,000 Know Your Customer applications and over 45,000 signups on the first day alone, ultimately reaching a record-setting 100,837 K.Y.C. applications and 147,204 signups in only six days. The demand was so strong that ArcBlock had to end its registration period seven days prior to the originally scheduled end date of Jan. 28.
The bullish sales were driven by 53,206 people participating, ranking ArcBlock’s public sale first compared to other successful I.C.O.s. To ensure general participation, ArcBlock decided to reduce individual cap to three ETHs and 7,500 CMT. The gas limit, meanwhile, was adjusted to 60 gwei, 200,000 for both ETH and CMT to ensure further a smooth-sailing public sale.
“This outcome owes its success to ArcBlock’s community and supporters from around the world,” Robert Mao, C.E.O. of ArcBlock, said. “The process of our token sale event is a reflection of a shared vision toward decentralization, something the ArcBlock team now looks forward to carrying out as we build our amazing platform.”
Assisted by an experienced team of advisors (including notably Salman Dhanani, Ding Lei, Justin Tomboulian, and Dr. Shoucheng Zhang) as well as investors and partners such as Bibox, CyberMiles, and EtherDelta, ArcBlock has outlined a 2018 roadmap and token distribution schedule as part of its overall development plan.

Console gaming is hot, and the Nintendo Switch is a big reason for that. Through the first 10 months of a console’s life, Nintendo’s hybrid home/handheld system is the fastest-selling system ever in the United States. But that hasn’t hurt PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sales, as those devices are still selling faster than their predecessors, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group.
“Combined sales of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One continue on a record-setting pace,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Over the first 50 months in market for each console, the combined hardware installed base of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now exceeds that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by 18 percent, and that of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox by 4 percent.”
Microsoft and Sony have both worked to give their fans a reason to upgrade their consoles with upgraded versions of their systems. The Xbox One X launched last year and the PlayStation 4 Pro launched in 2016. Both enable 4K resolutions to varying degrees, and both are aimed at the hardcore. This gives the biggest fans and highest spenders a reason to buy new hardware and it floods low-priced used consoles into the secondary market.
But with the introduction of the Switch, the ongoing success of the PS4 and Xbox One seems to suggest that those systems have their own, large dedicated fan bases beyond generic “fans of gaming.” The Switch also has that, and it is pulling from an audience of consumers that have, generally speaking, not completely committed to Microsoft or Sony.
Or maybe they are like me and own to many different ways to play games.

The hottest smartphone app of 2017 is only getting bigger in 2018.
More than 1.2 million people logged on to play “HQ Trivia” on Sunday night — a new record for the app and a huge amount of players for any game, let alone at one time.
The trivia app costs nothing, and is available on both iOS and Android devices. Players log on at specific times, twice on weekdays and once each day on weekends, to participate in a live trivia game. Best of all: Winners are rewarded with actual cash prizes.
Sunday night’s prize total was $ 10,000, which was split between around 400 people who each got about $ 25.

The game has become an explosive hit, spawning memes and elevating one of its hosts to cult celebrity status.
The hosts of “HQ” affectionately refer to players as “HQties” (pronounced “H-cuties”), and many of the game’s millions of players tune in dutifully each day. The game was only available on iOS until recently; an Android version launched in the last few weeks, thus adding a new infusion of players.
The game’s growth has been massive in the last few months, with players counts swelling dramatically as “HQ” went from an obscure app to a cultural phenomenon.
A chart tweeted out by venture capitalist Jay Kapoor demonstrates how large the game has become as of late:

Since the game’s beloved host Scott Rogowsky is on vacation currently, actress and comedian Sarah Pribis hosted the game on Sunday night.
Still, Rogowsky took to Twitter to sum up Sunday night’s achievement:

The night skyline of the Chinese city of Guangzhou lit up by a spectacular show in which hundreds of drones took to the air. In putting on the show, the city broke its own world record for the biggest number of drones involved in one performance.
Spectators reached for their phones to capture the dazzling light show as some 1,180 drones soared up against the backdrop of futuristic skyscrapers, gleaming in different colors. Marking the end of the 2017 Fortune Global Forum on Thursday, the display saw the swarm of aircrafts forming the Chinese ideograms for “innovation,”“open” and “fortune.” A ship and a kapok flower, the city’s official symbol, also showed up in the sky.
The eight-minute show was orchestrated by a single operator, the Asia Times reported. The drone manufacturer eHang developed a system to manage the one-ton squad on a single console, enabling the aircrafts to sync with each other.
“Drones can produce very impressive artistic effects,” company official in charge of the event Li Zhiyuan said, as quoted by the SCMP. “We hope that drone performances can one day replace fireworks in the business of night sky illumination.” Each of the drones had a price tag of some 10,000 yuan ($ 1,500), he added.

Enlarge / Nintendo expects a lot more proud new Switch owners like this one in the coming fiscal year.
The Nintendo Switch has been an unqualified success so far, with Nintendo recently promising increased holiday season production to meet demand and expectations of over 16 million total sales by the end of March 2018. Reporting now suggests the company is expecting that sales pace to increase markedly in the coming year, though, and another associated production increase would come with both a fair amount of potential and risk for the company.
The production news comes from The Wall Street Journal, which cites “people with direct knowledge of the matter” in reporting that Nintendo plans to make 25 to 30 million Switch units in the coming fiscal year (which starts in April 2018). That’s a major increase from the 13 million produced for the current fiscal year, which itself was a sizable increase from the company’s initial plans to make just 8 million units for the console’s first full year on shelves. WSJ‘s sources say those production numbers could go up even higher if coming holiday season sales are strong.
Even the low end of that 25 million sales range is ambitious, to put it mildly. The Wii sold 25.94 million units in its second full fiscal year, during the height of the sellout mania surrounding that motion-control console. These days, the market-leading PS4 sold just 17.7 million in its second full fiscal year on shelves. Even the market-dominating PS2 sold just 22.52 million units in its most successful fiscal year, roughly three years after launch.
