On Wednesday, the Israeli parliament voted down a draft bill that would have formally recognized the atrocities of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) against the Yazidi people as a genocide.
The proposed legislation was rejected by 58 parliamentarians, including the members from the ruling right-wing coalition led by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Thirty-eight votes in support of the bill were not enough to tip the balance.
The ruling coalition holds 61 of the 120 seats, with Netanyahu’s party Likud controlling the biggest share, 30 seats.
The sponsor of the bill, Zionist Union MP Ksenia Svetlova, called the vote “shameful.” She also dismissed the coalition’s argument that the UN has not formally designated the well-documented massacre of Yazidis as genocide as “ridiculous,” according to I24 news.
While the UN has not formally labelled the suffering of thousands of the 700,000-strong Yazidi population living under IS rule as a “genocide” either, a UN-mandated inquiry endorsed the notion to do so last year.
Marking the third anniversary of the attack on the Yazidi community on Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq on 3 August, 2014, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic published a report, calling on the international community to “recognize the crime of genocide being committed by ISIL against the Yazidis and to undertake steps to refer the situation to justice.”
The report noted that some 3,000 women and girls are still being held by IS who forces them to endure rape and beatings. Many girls, some as young as 10, have been sold at slave markets as terrorists viewed Yazidis as “non-believers” and thus, property. Thousands of fighting-age men have been slaughtered, while boys were forced to convert to Islam and sent to their deaths. According to various estimates, between 3,000 and 5,000 Yazidi men have perished while as many as 10,000 may have been enslaved.
Voicing her dismay with Israeli lawmakers’ decision, Svetlova tweeted that the MPs “voted in hypocrisy and nationalist egoism,” arguing that there was no other explanation for the government’s stance.
Apparently, some MPs wanted to side with Svetlova but were forced to vote along party lines. Likud MP Yehuda Glick, himself an Orthodox Jew, said that he was “ashamed” by his own vote but that he “had no choice” other than to follow his party’s instructions.
Some 85 percent of the Yazidi population is believed to have been displaced by the wars wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria. Some have sought asylum in Europe. However, not everyone has found safe haven there; one Yazidi teenager recently told RT about her encounter with her IS rapist-turned refugee in Germany.
So far, only Armenia has officially recognized the genocide of the Yazidis. In January, its parliament passed a resolution condemning the massacre and called for the perpetrators to be held responsible. Armenia houses some 50,000 Yazidis, making them Armenia’s largest ethnic minority.

In a report published by the University of Texas, researchers discovered that when transgender youths are allowed to use their chosen name, the risk of depression and suicide drops dramatically.
Through in-depth interviews of 129 transgender participants between the ages of 15 and 21, it was found that symptoms of depression fell by 71 percent in cases where a chosen name was regularly used. The participants were compared with other transgender youths who could not use their name in places like school, work or at home.
Meanwhile, the study showed that thoughts of suicide in participants with adopted names was 34 percent less than in those without the ability to use chosen monikers.
“Many kids who are transgender have chosen a name that is different than the one that they were given at birth,” said the study’s lead author Stephen Russell, who is a professor at the University of Texas.
“We showed that the more contexts or settings where they were able to use their preferred name, the stronger their mental health was.” Published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, the study analyzed contributors from the northeast, southwest and west coast of the US.
Last year, a study of suicide rates over 19 years in Canada revealed that transgender people were 22 times more likely to attempt suicide than the rest of the general public.
Carried out by researchers at McGill University and the University of Saskatchewan, the study also reported mounting evidence to suggest that “barriers to transition-related healthcare contribute to suicidality among those who desire such measures.”

Iranian MPs have overwhelmingly voted in favor of a bill that would see Jerusalem recognized as the capital of the Palestinian State during a parliamentary session Sunday.
The motion was backed by 187 of the 233 deputies, with 15 voting against and 9 abstaining, Iranian media reported. The measure will become Article 1 of the new legislation that stipulates Iran’s support for Palestine which the parliament will debate over the next two days.
On Thursday, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelming in favor of a non-binding resolution declaring the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “null and void.” Earlier this week, the American ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution, which also rejected Donald Trump’s declaration.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the US veto was no surprise for Tehran because of America’s “racist and hostile policies that unilaterally back” Israel which has occupied Jerusalem since 1967. The “provocative and unwise decision” underlined the “lack of compliance with international resolutions” by the Americans, ministry spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi said as cited by the Mehr news agency.
The Iranian state “strongly condemns this move and urges all countries and the international community to prevent its implementation to preserve international peace and security,” he added.
Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital on December 6 drew widespread international condemnation, with European leaders denouncing it as dangerous and harmful to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Last week, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held an emergency summit where member countries acknowledged East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine in response to the US move.

The violent clashes that followed between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza have still not completely died down, resulting in at least 11 Palestinians being killed and over 3300 injured, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Thousands of people also took to the streets to protest and burn US flags in Jordan, Iran, Egypt, and elsewhere across the Muslim world.

An 8-year-old transgender student and his parents are suing an Orange Country private school for failing to let him express his identity as a girl.
The lawsuit, filed Aug. 2, alleges that Heritage Oak Private School violated the Unruh Civil Rights Act which outlaws discrimination based on sex or sexual orientation because it wouldn’t allow Nikki Brar to wear the girls’ uniform, use the girls’ bathroom, or be called a “she.”
His lawyers said he is determined to fight for “education without discrimination,” the Los Angles Times reported Monday. The suit is particularly noteworthy because it is “the first [transgender rights] case to use a state anti-discrimination law as one of the grounds for relief,” Mark Rosenbaum, director of the pro bono Public Counsel Opportunity Under Law, told the LA Times.
The boy’s parents filed the suit against Heritage Oak, its executive director Phyllis Cygan, and school’s parent group, Nobel Learning Communities. They are seeking damages for “emotional distress and discrimination,” as well as more than $ 10,000 for school tuition and fees. They also asked Heritage Oak to write an additional nondiscrimination policy specifically for transgender students, and demanded that the school teach lessons on transgender identity in the classroom.
“It honors our child’s commitment to being who she is despite adversity,” Brar’s mother, Priya Shah, wrote in an email. “It is our small contribution toward ensuring that other transgender and gender expansive children do not go through the same hardship and trauma.”
Nobel Learning Communities released a statement following the lawsuit, saying, “We believed it was extremely important to respond, not hastily, but with deliberate care, to decide when and how to inform and educate our entire elementary school community of students, staff and parents about the mid-year change of gender identity expression of a young child … Unfortunately, these accommodations were rejected and the parents withdrew their child.”
“They have to create a private school environment that’s safe and supportive for all students,” said Asaf Orr, an attorney for the National Center for Lesbian Rights’ transgender youth project.
An appeals court found in 2009 that a private, nonprofit school can’t be sued under the Unruh Act, but Heritage Oak is a for-profit, therefore making it unlikely that the judge will rule the same way with this case.
Brar will start at a public school in Orange County in the fall.

The Federal Reserve is embarking on an annual summer ritual: Downgrading its overly optimistic forecasts for economic growth and, potentially, preparing for a pause in interest rate increases.
Wall Street rallied after Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s testimony to Congress this week as she seemed to open the door for such a pause, by acknowledging that a recent decline in inflation further below the central bank’s 2% target may not, in fact, be as fleeting as policymakers had hoped.
Yellen, as she has in other statements recently, told lawmakers that she expects low inflation to be transitory. “Temporary factors appear to be at work. It’s premature to reach the judgment that we’re not on the path to 2% inflation over the next couple of years,” Yellen said.
But, and this was enough for salivating bulls looking for hints that rate hikes could slow down or pause, “As we indicate in our statement, it’s something we’re watching very closely, considering risks around the inflation outlook.”
The latest figures are clearly heading in the wrong direction. Consumer prices held flat in June despite expectations for a 0.1% increase and the annual rate, which the Fed watches closely, registered just 1.6%.
The Fed’s preferred measure of inflation, the personal consumption expenditures index, has also been slipping.
Andy Kiersz/Business InsiderFed policymakers “have a pause built into their baseline estimates and it seems the inflation data present a reason to exercise that pause option in September,” according to Julia Coronado, president and founder of MacroPolicy Perspectives.
“Caution on the part of consumers comes despite a solid job market and booming equity markets and is feeding into core inflation through price wars on cell phone service, airfares, cars, clothing,” she told Business Insider.
“If this continues the Fed won’t be able to move much further on rates, but they can also take comfort that what may look like an asset bubble isn’t fooling firms, banks, or consumers into spending with reckless abandon.”
As if on cue, not one but two regional Fed banks have just downgraded their growth estimates. The New York Fed predicted 1.9% growth in the second quarter of 2017:

While the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow model slipped to a prediction of 2.4% growth:

“Coupled with ongoing soft inflation data, continued weakness on the consumer side suggests the Fed’s conviction for a second-quarter rebound was but a figment of monetary policy imagination,” said Lindsey Piegza, chief economist at Stifel Nicolaus.
The Fed has frequently been overly optimistic about its predictions for rate hikes in the post-recession era. This rather stunning chart from Deutsche Bank’s Torsten Slok is rather instructive:

Once, I followed a first date into a busy subway station. I lost track of him for a second, then found him again and followed him halfway down the platform before I heard someone calling my name. As it turns out, that minute of confusion was enough for me to identify the wrong guy as my date and almost get on a train with him. (There was no second date.)
My excuse is that I’m somewhat faceblind. That is, I have trouble recognizing faces and telling people apart, even when my vision is perfect. On the other end of the spectrum are super-recognizers, who can remember someone they saw once in a class three years ago.
If you’re curious how you stack up, you can take the Cambridge face memory test. It starts off easy, like this:

By the end, you’re looking at blurry blobs.
I scored high enough on the test that I probably don’t need clinical help. But I scored low enough to confirm that it’s not just my imagination — I really do have a lot of trouble telling people apart. Don’t get me wrong, I can recognize my friends on the street. The problem arises when it’s someone I don’t see often, who also doesn’t have a distinguishing physical characteristic.
Since I use hair and clothing cues a lot, movies can be a nightmare. A friend (clearly also slightly faceblind) told me that he once thought Justin Timberlake was a completely different character in the second half of a movie because in the later scenes “he was wearing a sweater.” For me, Fifth Harmony music videos — five women dancing, constantly changing outfits — remain a personal enemy.
On the other end of the spectrum are the super-recognizers. Though I am faceblind, my colleague Rachel Becker is a super-recognizer, so we all know who would be voted off the island first if Verge Science were on Survivor. But having an excellent facial memory can be annoying, too. “I pretend I don’t recognize people at the grocery store because there’s no way they recognize me,” she told me. Another time, she said hello to someone she had class with a few years earlier, and whose name she never knew. “It was clear they didn’t recognize me and it was very uncomfortable,” Rachel said.
Another co-worker, Loren Grush, once recognized the husband of her boyfriend’s co-worker, who sometimes goes to brunch with them. She stared at him to make sure he was the right person, then went to talk to him and told him she knew his wife. He plainly didn’t recognize her. Later, this man’s wife told Loren his version of the story: he thought Loren was checking him out and got super confident thinking he must have looked extra good that day. When he realized that she was just trying to recognize him, he felt embarrassed that it wasn’t true.
Then there’s my editor, Liz Lopatto, who got a 90 percent on the facial recognition test but is terrible at names. She once saw a woman she recognized in the Los Angeles airport and waved. She couldn’t immediately put a name to the face, but guessed it was an acquaintance from college — someone she hadn’t seen in years and didn’t have the context clues to identify. The woman waved back, they smiled at each other, and Liz went through airport security. An hour later, the name came to her — except it wasn’t a college classmate. It was actress Amy Adams. (Ed note: Sorry, Amy.)
This all goes to show that, even if you aren’t faceblind, there are many ways to embarrass and be embarrassed.
