If you’re a European Union citizen, it just became that much easier to prove your identity — wherever you happen to be in the region. The EU now officially supports cross-border recognition for digital IDs, making your virtual driver’s license or bank card useful in any member state so long as it’s notified according to EU rules. Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain have already finished the notification process. Croatia and Estonia are next in line, while Belgium, Portugal and the UK (yes, despite everything) are in the early stages.

The move should mostly reduce paperwork, making it easier to enroll in universities, check your health records or set up bank accounts. You might even have the chance to create bank accounts in other EU countries without having to show up in person, although the European Commission is working with an expert group to prevent abuse for purposes like money laundering.

There are some broader implications as well. This could help you share only the data that’s absolutely essential, which should be vital for blockchain-based identity systems where distributed trust is everything. It could also be used to bolster GDPR rules by either verifying ages or safeguarding children online without having to reveal any of their information.

It’s going to be a long while before you can simply assume that your digital ID will work wherever you go within the EU. In practice, the new rules amount to an inconsistent patchwork. Even so, it may just be a question of when, not if, you can stop worrying about having physical identification close at hand.

The motion, which was passed with the support of all major parties, comes after the Turkish government summoned the Dutch charge d’affaires in Ankara on Saturday to express its anger at the motion.
Turkey’s foreign ministry on Thursday condemned the motion’s approval, saying that it would not be legally binding or valid.

Armenia has long sought recognition for the killings as genocide, with the country saying it left some 1.5 million Armenians dead. The Turkish authorities refuse to recognize the events, which took place at the height of World War I, as genocide, arguing that there were atrocities on both sides.

As many as 29 countries, including Russia, Canada, much of the EU, and South American countries, as well as 48 out of 50 US states, have recognized the Armenian genocide.

The motion’s passage comes amid an increasingly tense relationship between the Netherlands and Turkey. Earlier this month, the Dutch Foreign Ministry formally withdrew its ambassador to Ankara and announced that it would not accept the appointment of a new Turkish ambassador. 

The ministry’s announcement came after the diplomat was barred from the country following a dispute that began last March, when the Netherlands blocked visas for Turkish officials campaigning for votes among expatriate Turkish in the lead-up to the constitutional referendum which ultimately granted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping powers.

Erdogan said at the time that the Netherlands must pay for its actions. “Sooner or later, they will pay for this, but we will rapidly bring the Netherlands to account by diplomatic means. We cannot let this go adrift,” he said.

The Turkish president also called the Netherlands “very nervous and cowardly” after it declined to let the country’s foreign minister enter the country. “They are Nazi remnants, they are fascists,” he told supporters at a rally in Istanbul. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte responded by demanding an apology from Ankara, stating that such comments were unacceptable.

Vox Media management voluntarily recognized the legitimacy of its employee union.

After almost two months of meetings with representatives from the Writers Guild of America East, the committee to organize the union announced Wednesday that the company would officially recognize a bargaining unit. 

“We have worked hard to form a unit that represents the people who build this company every day and want to look out for each other,” the Vox Media Union Organizing Committee said in a statement. “That work has finally paid off.”

Management had publicly said it was open to the prospect of a union, but talks had slowed as the two sides negotiated over whether individual employees should be permitted to join the editorial union. Organizers had taken actions including organizational happy hours, lunches, and a “Slack Strike” to push management to voluntarily recognize a larger bargaining unit. 

Vox joined several other digital media newsrooms that have formed employee unions.

Staffers at Vice, HuffPost, and Thrillist successfully voluntarily unionized over the past several years. 

Other newsrooms have also faced headwinds after attempting to form a union.

Gothamist and DNAinfo shut down last year after their editorial employees voted to unionize, staffers attempting to form a union at the The Los Angeles Times have faced harsh words from management following their unionization drive.

The Czech Republic on Wednesday followed US President Donald Trump’s lead.

In a statement on its Foreign Ministry’s web site, it said, “The Czech Republic currently, before the peace between Israel and Palestine is signed, recognizes Jerusalem to be in fact the capital of Israel in the borders of the demarcation line from 1967.”

“The Czech Republic together with other EU member states, following the EU Foreign Affaires Council Conclusions, considers Jerusalem to be future capital of both states, meaning the State of Israel and the future State of Palestine.”　

In so doing, it took an unusual step of breaking with EU member states who hold Jerusalem should not recognized as Israel’s capital until a final status agreement is reached.

But unlike the US, the Czech Foreign Ministry also said that it would only consider relocating its embassy based on results of negotiations.

A marriage between three gay men has been legally recognized in Colombia’s first official “polyamorous” union.

The the union of actor Victor Hugo Prada, teacher John Alejandro Rodriguez and journalist Manuel Jose Bermudez was made official in Medellin on June 8.

“We wanted to validate our household … and our rights, because we had no solid legal basis establishing us as a family,” Victor told Colombian radio station LAFM.

Speaking to Colombian magazine Semana, the men said the roots of their relationship started in 1999 when Manuel and John first met and began a relationship. That match then grew to include a third person, Alex Esneider Zabala, whom the couple met in 2004. It expanded still further when they met Victor, the youngest in the union, in 2012.

The men told Semana that they lived happily in the four person relationship for several years until Alex tragically fell victim to stomach cancer two years ago.

Manuel is the oldest of the three, although he has not revealed his exact age but is understood to be in his 40s or 50s. John, meanwhile, is 36 while Victor is the youngest at 22 years old.

Victor explained that the trio have signed legal papers with a solicitor in Medellin that establishes them as a family unit with inheritance rights.

“This establishes us as a family, a polyamorous family. It is the first time in Colombia that has been done,” he said.

Colombia legalized same sex marriage a little over a year ago, in April 2016. It was the fourth Latin American country to do so after Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

When asked by Semana if he considered his marriage strange, Manuel said: “The strange thing is to say that one can only love one person.”

Russia recognizes west Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated in a surprise announcement on Thursday, obtained exclusively by The Jerusalem Post.

The announcement comes as US President Donald Trump’s administration is agonizing over whether to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move that would constitute recognizing west Jerusalem as the country’s capital. No other country in the world recognizes any part of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry reads, “We reaffirm our commitment to the UN-approved principles for a Palestinian-Israeli settlement, which include the status of East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state. At the same time, we must state that in this context we view West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

This is a sharp shift in Russian policy, which until now has formally held that Jerusalem should eventually be under a permanent international regime. The statement appears in English on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Russian web site.

While officials in Jerusalem interpreted this to mean that recognition of west Jerusalem as Israel’s capital will only come once east Jerusalem becomes the capital of a Palestinian state, The Jerusalem Post has learned that Moscow intends this recognition to go into effect immediately.

Russia’s ambassador to Israel will meet with Foreign Ministry officials in the coming days to discuss Moscow’s decision and its ramifications. There is currently no intention, however, of moving Russia’s embassy to Jerusalem.

Headlined “Foreign Ministry statement regarding Palestinian-Israeli settlement,” the statement reads that Moscow “is deeply concerned about the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Palestine and Israel have not held political negotiations for nearly three years, and the situation on the ground has been deteriorating.”

According to the statement, “The stalling of the Middle East peace process has created conditions for unilateral moves that undermine the potential for an internationally accepted solution to the Palestinian problem, under which two states – Israel and Palestine – could live in peace and security with each other and with their neighbors.”

Moscow reaffirmed its “support for the two-state solution as an optimal option that meets the national interests of the Palestinian and Israeli people, both of whom have friendly relations with Russia, and the interests of all other countries in the region and the international community as a whole.”

The statement continued that “The concrete parameters of a solution for the entire range of issues regarding the status of Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem, should be coordinated at the direct talks between the parties involved. Using its opportunities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a co-sponsor of the peace process and an active member of the Middle East Quartet of international intermediaries, Russia will continue to provide assistance to the achievement of Israeli-Palestinian agreements.”

The statement also said that Moscow will “focus on ensuring free access to Jerusalem’s holy places for all believers.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry had no immediate reaction to the Russian statement.

One diplomatic official said that timing may be connected to Russia – in the wake of the chemical attacks in Syria – wanting to deflect criticism of being a chief enabler of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Likewise, the official said, it was likely that the statement is Moscow’s answer to the apparently rejuvenated US efforts to revive the Israeli-Palestinian diplomatic process, and a signal that Russia is a relevant party that wants to play an active role in the process.
