  • Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh says he would have shaken the hand of Fred Guttenberg, the father of a shooting victim from Parkland, Florida, had he recognized him before he was whisked away by security detail.
  • The moment was captured in a photograph that went viral on social media.
  • Kavanaugh said in a written response that he assumed the man who approached him “and touched my arm” had been one of the many protesters in the hearing room that day.
  • “If I had known who he was, I would have shaken his hand, talked to him, and expressed my sympathy,” Kavanaugh said. “And I would have listened to him.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh says he would have shaken the hand of a school shooting victim’s father during a break in last week’s Senate hearing had he recognized him before being whisked away by security detail.

Kavanaugh’s explanation for the encounter with Fred Guttenberg— captured in an Associated Press photo that went viral on social media — was among a 263-page response to written questions from senators on a range of issues including abortion, executive power and his personal finances.

  • The millennial generation generally includes people born between 1981 and 1996.
  • Through their sheer size, they’ve affected industries such as fast food, fast fashion, and higher education.
  • They parent differently from their parents — and run their lives differently too.

Everyone loves to hate millennials.

The Pew Research Center recently defined this generation as people born between 1981 and 1996. And boy, are they shaking things up.

They’re killing industries left and right, from napkins to diamond rings. They’re marrying later and starting nontraditional families. Those rascals!

Below, we rounded up some of millennials’ most significant departures from tradition — “tradition” being the way their parents did things. Read on to find out how this much-maligned generation is changing life as we know it.

Instead of preparing meals, millennials are more likely to order takeout.

The food industry is responding to major shifts in the way young people eat.

Business Insider’s Akin Oyedele reported that millennials spent the least amount of time on meal preparation compared with older generations. Instead, they’re more likely to eat at restaurants, pick up prepared meals, or order delivery.

Instead of drinking beer, millennials prefer wine and spirits.

Millennials are drinking less alcohol than older generations in general. But when they do drink, they prefer wine and spirits to beer.

Citing Nielsen data, Business Insider’s Kate Taylor reported that beer penetration in the US market fell by 1% from 2016 to 2017 while wine and spirits stayed the same. UBS and Goldman Sachs have also found that millennials are less interested than previous generations in beer.

Instead of attending lectures, millennials want to learn online.

It’s screens versus lectures.

Business Insider reported on a survey in which 69% of people 18 to 34 years old said they thought they learned more from technology than from people, compared with 50% of people older than 45 who said the same.

And there’s evidence that Generation Z — those born after millennials — could be even more disinclined to pursue higher education, especially to avoid falling into debt.

10 more countries could recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital – Israeli deputy FM https://briefnews.eu/10-more-countries-could-recognize-jerusalem-as-israeli-capital-israeli-deputy-fm/ https://briefnews.eu/10-more-countries-could-recognize-jerusalem-as-israeli-capital-israeli-deputy-fm/#respond Tue, 26 Dec 2017 01:56:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/10-more-countries-could-recognize-jerusalem-as-israeli-capital-israeli-deputy-fm/

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely has told a radio station that 10 more countries are considering recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital following the earlier declaration by Guatemala.

Speaking to Kan Bet public radio, Hotovely said the 10 states are following the lead of Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, who Sunday declared the Guatemalan embassy would be moved to Jerusalem. The Central American country, along with six other states, voted with the US and Israel in contrast to the rest of the UN General Assembly which last week voted 128-9 to condemn the US decision to recognize Jerusalem. The other six countries were Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo.

Hotovely did not name any of the 10 countries, but said many had a strong Christian tradition. Philippines, the Czech Republic and Romania abstained from the UN vote last week, but have entertained the possibility of joining Guatemala and the United States. Czech President Milos Zeman supports the move to Jerusalem. But European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini later said the Czech foreign minister had promised not to move their embassy to Jerusalem, which the EU considers the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Earlier Monday, Netanyahu thanked Morales in a speech at the Israeli parliament. “I spoke yesterday with my friend the Guatemalan president, and thanked him for his support of us through his vote in the UN,” he said in the Knesset. “I expressed my hope that he will follow President Trump’s footsteps and recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and will begin the process of moving the embassy to there. That night he released an announcement that he would in fact do so. So I want to say, from here, to the president of Guatemala: May God bless you, my friend, and may God bless our countries.”

Guatemala’s decision, however, was criticized by Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi as “an absurd provocation [and] violation of international law.” Despite repeated warnings by global and regional powers, including Russia, US President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel on December 6 and announced his country’s embassy would be moving there from Tel Avid, triggering widespread condemnation.

Following the announcement, massive anti-Israeli and anti-American protests erupted across the Muslim world. The most intense clashes have been in Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza, as Palestinians rallied angrily against the decision and militant group Hamas urging a new uprising, or intifada. More than 10 people have been killed and hundreds injured as Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons to suppress the protests.

Bragi’s AI earbuds will recognize the sounds around you https://briefnews.eu/bragis-ai-earbuds-will-recognize-the-sounds-around-you/ https://briefnews.eu/bragis-ai-earbuds-will-recognize-the-sounds-around-you/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 21:21:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bragis-ai-earbuds-will-recognize-the-sounds-around-you/

Bragi is determined to stand out in the increasingly crowded smart earbud space, and it might just have an ace up its sleeve. The startup and its partner Audio Analytic are promising to show off the first “context-aware earphones” at CES in January — that is, a Dash Pro whose AI can recognize nearby sounds and act accordingly. While the exact capabilities are under wraps, Audio Analytic hints at recognizing both conversations and ambient sounds. The earphones might pipe down when you start talking to a friend, or let in more outside sound if an ambulance is approaching with sirens blaring.

As before, the AI will be built into the earpieces themselves and thus won’t depend on your phone or an internet connection to make sense of the world. And that’s important — the ultimate goal is to reduce the need for physical controls by having your earbuds automatically do the right thing, and that means ensuring that the AI responds quickly and consistently.

It’s not clear when this feature might be available to the public. It could be key to Bragi’s future, whenever it shows up. Other fledgling companies have struggled to survive, and heavyweights like Apple, Google and Samsung are closing in. Audio recognition could give Bragi an edge others can’t currently match.

Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital, but delay embassy relocation – reports https://briefnews.eu/trump-to-recognize-jerusalem-as-israeli-capital-but-delay-embassy-relocation-reports/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-to-recognize-jerusalem-as-israeli-capital-but-delay-embassy-relocation-reports/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 02:29:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-to-recognize-jerusalem-as-israeli-capital-but-delay-embassy-relocation-reports/

President Donald Trump is expected to announce official US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Wednesday, according to various reports citing US and White House officials. The US embassy, however, will not be relocated immediately.

The US embassy move from Tel Aviv would be a symbolic and substantive shift in US policy on the Israel-Palestine question. While the US ostensibly supports a two-state solution, it could be extremely detrimental to any peace deal, as Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the rightful capital for their own future statehood.

Sources close to the White House told ABC News and the Associated Press that recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital will not be a political statement. Part of Jerusalem could still potentially be a capital for a Palestinian state, ABC News reported.

Amazon will let developers build Alexa skills that recognize unique voices in 2018 https://briefnews.eu/amazon-will-let-developers-build-alexa-skills-that-recognize-unique-voices-in-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-will-let-developers-build-alexa-skills-that-recognize-unique-voices-in-2018/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2017 04:27:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-will-let-developers-build-alexa-skills-that-recognize-unique-voices-in-2018/

Amazon today announced that starting in early 2018, developers will be able to build Alexa skills that recognize unique human voices. Personalized voice profiles are set up through the account of the primary user of an Alexa-enabled device and can be extended to up to 10 users.

Voice profiles that recognize up to 10 users were first made available last month. Called Your Voice by Amazon, up to 10 user profiles can be attached to a single Alexa-enabled device. This type of personalization makes it possible for Alexa to make sure that it delivers the right flash briefings when a person says “What’s the latest news?,” uses the right contacts when you say “Call work,” or delivers tailored music results if you have the Amazon Music Unlimited Family Plan.

It also powers personalization for shopping.

Letting third-party Alexa skills identify users based on voice could potentially lead to native payments for Alexa skills. Today payments for skills like Starbucks or WingStop are often entered via websites or apps for preset orders.

Personalization for Amazon voice apps could also lead to more Alexa skills made especially for games. From Alexa Accelerator investments to reports of CEO Jeff Bezos’ gaming interest, games with Alexa-enabled devices have become a larger part of initiatives by Amazon to grow its Alexa skills ecosystem in the second half of 2017. Last month, When in Rome, one of the first known board games led by Amazon’s Alexa made its debut, the product of Alexa Accelerator graduate Sensible Object. A series of six board games called Voice Originals are due out next year.

Echo Buttons preorders for games with Alexa skills started for the first time last week and are due out December 19.

Also announced today, and coming in the first quarter of 2018, Alexa skills will gain the ability to send push notifications that light up the ring of an Echo device and make noise. Applications for a developer preview is available today for skills in the U.S., the U.K., and Germany.

Notifications for Alexa skills were first announced in spring and began to roll out to select developers this fall.

Snapchat’s latest filters recognize pets and food https://briefnews.eu/snapchats-latest-filters-recognize-pets-and-food/ https://briefnews.eu/snapchats-latest-filters-recognize-pets-and-food/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2017 10:43:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snapchats-latest-filters-recognize-pets-and-food/

Ahead of its imminent redesign, Snapchat is rolling out new filters that recognize what’s in your snaps to provide contextually-aware graphics. Snap quietly began doling out the new feature (which lives inside its filter carousel) to users last week, the company confirmed to Mashable. You can trigger the filters by capturing images and video of select items — including food, pets, and sports equipment — and objects at locations, such as concerts and beaches.

Although the update sounds similar to the app’s existing, location-based geofilters, it instead relies on the object-recognition patent Snap was granted in July. Like Snapchat’s regular filters, you can bet brands will use the new graphics to crank out ads for their products. If Snap has its way, a pic of a cup of coffee could serve up a coupon for the store it was taken at (as detailed in its patent filing). And, a visit to a restaurant could unlock graphics of its menu. Of course, that would mean more money in Snap’s coffers, which it needs a lot more of if it wants to see a profit.
