Film directors tend to be control freaks. It makes sense. They want their exact vision to be put onto the screen, the exact pictures and sounds that pop up when they close their eyes and envision their movie. They have something in mind, and anything less than that simply won’t be good enough.

Quentin Tarantino is one of these cinematic tyrants. He’s known for being very particular with his actors, making demands and ultimatums. It shows on screen. Tarantino has one of the most singular and unique filmmaking styles today. All of his movies absolutely ooze of his voice, his influence, and his vision.

Tarantino even admits to his controlling nature, at a talk at the Jerusalem Cinematheque from 2016. “I am the captain of the ship, and they have to follow my orders as far as that’s concerned,” said the director, before pivoting to pointing out how he’s willing to work with his actors. “But when it comes to getting the best out of them in any given scene or performance, then I’m at their disposal. Because it’s not about getting my way, it’s about making them comfortable and getting the best out of them.”

Despite his claims that he is sensitive to the desires of the performers, these demands for perfection can sometimes cause issues with cast members. One time, Tarantino’s uncompromising attitude even put Uma Thurman, the star of “Kill Bill” with whom Tarantino had worked many times before, in grave physical danger, an incident that permanently marred the pair’s relationship.

A Dangerous Proposal

In the two “Kill Bill” films, Thurman stars as the nameless Bride, who swears revenge on an elite team of assassins she used to be a member of after they attempt to kill her at her wedding. The films are light on plot, heavy on wall-to-wall gory action. Thurman had already been through plenty in preparing for her role, including some brutal martial arts training.

This particular scene was far more harrowing than any of Thurman’s early experiences, however. During the filming of “Kill Bill: Volume 2,” Thurman’s character has a scene where she drives a Volkswagon Karmann Ghia, and Tarantino asked her to perform the stunt driving herself.

According to a New York Times profile of Thurman, Tarantino would not take no for an answer. “He was furious because I’d cost them a lot of time,” said Thurman, in her very personal interview. “But I was scared. He said: ‘I promise you the car is fine. It’s a straight piece of road.'” Tarantino told her she needed to hit 40 miles per hour, so that her hair would blow in the wind, threatening to make her do it again if she didn’t. A terrified Thurman agreed to do it, but knew she felt extremely unsafe. “That was a deathbox that I was in. The seat wasn’t screwed down properly. It was a sand road and it was not a straight road.”

A Fateful Crash

The resulting crash was brutal, as Thurman drifted off the road and hit a tree. “The steering wheel was at my belly and my legs were jammed under me,” said Thurman. “I felt this searing pain and thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m never going to walk again.”

The crash led to a massive fight between Thurman and Tarantino. “When I came back from the hospital in a neck brace with my knees damaged and a large massive egg on my head and a concussion, I wanted to see the car and I was very upset. Quentin and I had an enormous fight, and I accused him of trying to kill me.”

Thurman’s husband at the time, Ethan Hawke, rushed to be at her side, saying he confronted Tarantino, who was “very upset with himself” and asked for forgiveness.

Thurman wanted to see the footage of the crash, but Miramax, the film’s distributor, would not let her unless she signed off that she wouldn’t hold them responsible for damages. She didn’t sign, and she didn’t see the footage for 15 years.

Uma Thurman was lucky that day. She walked again, she fully recovered. Her and Tarantino’s relationship and trust was thrown away, but her life wasn’t. One can only wonder why Tarantino was so insistent that she be the one driving the car. Wanting to manifest his vision for the movie isn’t an adequate excuse.

BBC News: ‘Reckless’ Boris Johnson Brexit deal slated as Starmer threatens to ‘take on’ PM https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-reckless-boris-johnson-brexit-deal-slated-as-starmer-threatens-to-take-on-pm/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-reckless-boris-johnson-brexit-deal-slated-as-starmer-threatens-to-take-on-pm/#respond Tue, 27 Aug 2019 09:47:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-reckless-boris-johnson-brexit-deal-slated-as-starmer-threatens-to-take-on-pm/

BBC Breakfast returned with Louise Minchin and Charlie Stayt presenting live from the studio in Media City.

Joining them on a live video link was Sir Keir Starmer MP, who spoke passionately about the meeting being held today which will see several opposition party leaders gather to come up with a plan to stop a No Deal Brexit.

During the conversation, Minchin wanted to find out why their were strong views against Boris Johnson’s proposal and it wasn’t long before Starmer hit out at the Prime Minister.

Stayt kicked off the discussion with: “Our top story today; later today Jeremy Corbyn will meet with other opposition party leaders as he looks to secure support for his plan to block a No Deal Brexit.”

“Well Shadow Secretary [Sir] Keir Starmer joins us now from westminster. What do you want out of this meeting today?” Minchin probed.

“The purpose of the meeting is to bring opposition leaders together and try to agree a plan into next week,” the guest replied.

“I think it’s really important we act swiftly because Prime Minister Johnson is taking us on this reckless route to a No Deal Brexit, which will have really important ramifications for our country and we have to stop him in that.

“And therefore the purpose of the meeting is to have a pretty frank and open discussion; to say to Boris Johnson as soon as we get back, ‘this parliament is not prepared to support a No Deal Brexit.’”

Minchin questioned: “What is the plan then? A vote of confidence? What is it? “

“As you may have seen this Prime Minister has apparently been taking advice on whether he can just shut down Parliament from 9 September through to the middle of October,” Stamer explained.

“That’s the signs of a Prime Minister who isn’t confident he’s going to get a deal and [someone who] doesn’t think he would win in a clash with parliament, so we’ve got to act quickly.”

Thos watching at home then saw Minchin continue with: “What are you trying to do? To get Brexit, delay Brexit, stop Brexit? What is it?”

“It is to stop a No Deal Brexit,” Starmer stated confidently. “We’re on this reckless course that Johnson has put us on.

“He’s not putting an alternative deal before us. He’s pursuing a course which is likely to end up as  No Deal Brexit, Parliament has never accepted that.

“Boris Johnson thinks he can just knock Parliament out of the way…there’s going to be this confrontation next week.

“We [opposition leaders] are going to take on a united front to take Johnson on in this reckless approach that he’s got.”

Later on in the show, leader of the Liberal Democrats party Jo Swinton MP joined from Westminster, where she spoke about what she wants from today’s meeting.

“I want us to be able to have confidence that we can stop the catastrophe of a No Deal Brexit,” she told Minchin.

“Brexit can be stopped! We do not need to settle for this damaging path for our country. I welcome the opportunity to talk with others on the opposition benches who are concerned about No Deal as well.”

Israeli PM and acting defense chief Benjamin Netanyahu has praised the capabilities of his air force a day after IDF jets endangered two civilian flights while carrying out Christmas Day strikes against ‘Iranian targets’ in Syria.

“We are standing steadfast on our red lines in Syria and everywhere else,” Netanyahu told cadets at a graduation ceremony at Hatzerim Air Force Base, noting that the air force’s unmatched potential allows them to reach areas “near and far, very far.”

While singing the praises to the “special capabilities” of his country’s airborne forces and arsenals that can destroy any target, Netanyahu did not directly comment on the latest strikes in Syria. He also failed to respond to the criticism of the Russian military which earlier had accused the Israeli air force of directly endangering two civilian flights over Damascus and the Lebanese capital Beirut during Tuesday night’s raid.

On the evening of Christmas Day, six Israeli F-16 fighter jets used two civilian flights as cover to strike a logistics compound on the outskirts of Damascus from Lebanese airspace, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday. Thus, during the assault, the Syrian military was forced to restrict the use of air defense systems and radio jamming capabilities to avert a possible tragedy. Despite that advantage, only two of the sixteen Israeli-launched laser-guided bombs reached their targets, wounding three people, while the rest were intercepted.

While a potential tragedy involving civilian jets was averted on Tuesday, similar decoy tactics by Israel already led to horrific consequences back in September, when Syrian air defense units struck a Russian Il-20 plane, killing all 15 crew on board. At the time of the disaster, Israel’s F-16s were using the surveillance plane as cover during their raid against alleged ‘Iranian targets’ in Syria.

Yet, despite a record of reckless actions, Netanyahu remains committed to fighting the “Iranian military entrenchment in Syria,” by countering the threat “vigorously and continuously,” even through the holiday season.

Roland Barthes proclaimed the death of the author in 1967, arguing that once a text is produced, it is an independent entity to be interpreted and understood by the audience without the author’s intentions, idiosyncrasies, and personal history getting in the way.

The Journal of Controversial Ideas is Barthes’ idea made manifest—it proposes to allow academics to publish papers on controversial topics under a pseudonym. The hope is that this will allow researchers to write freely on controversial topics without the danger of social disapproval or threats. Thus the journal removes the author’s motivations, conflicts of interests, and worldview from the presentation of a potentially controversial idea. This proposal heralds the death of the academic author—and, unlike Barthes, we believe this is a bad thing.

A history of concealment

First, we need to distinguish between anonymous and pseudonymous authorship: a paper is anonymous when it does not list a name, and it is pseudonymous when it lists a name which is not the author’s given name. Both practices have long histories in academic research.

‘Reckless Russians’: BoJo and NATO head need no proof to blame Moscow https://briefnews.eu/reckless-russians-bojo-and-nato-head-need-no-proof-to-blame-moscow/ https://briefnews.eu/reckless-russians-bojo-and-nato-head-need-no-proof-to-blame-moscow/#respond Mon, 19 Mar 2018 21:16:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/reckless-russians-bojo-and-nato-head-need-no-proof-to-blame-moscow/ NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg wasted no time backing the UK’s accusations against Moscow in the Skripal case, but the absence of facts did not seem to matter in this case or other “examples” of Moscow’s “reckless behavior.”

The NATO Secretary General delivered the comments at a joint press conference with the UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson in Brussels on Monday, where Johnson came to secure European support in the Skripal case.

Stoltenberg branded the Salisbury chemical incident an “attack,” despite the fact that the exact causes of the alleged poisoning of former double-agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter were still undetermined and not even a shade of evidence has surfaced yet. The UK blamed Moscow for the incident, naming the mysterious Novichok nerve agent, presumably of Soviet origin, as the toxin involved.

“The attack in Salisbury was the first use of a nerve agent on Alliance territory. It showed total disrespect for human lives. And the attack was an unacceptable breach of international norms and rules,” Stoltenberg stated, adding that the incident followed a pattern of “reckless behavior” on Russia’s part.

The official provided examples of such “behavior,” which consisted of a usual set of anti-Russian allegations raised over the past few years. The only fact Stoltenberg mentioned was the reunification of Crimea with Russia, following the 2014 referendum. As usual, the NATO chief described the reunification as an act of “illegal annexation” and a violation of the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.” The other “examples” he mentioned did not hold water and were mere speculations, namely alleging that Russian was involved in the civil conflict in eastern Ukraine and “different types of hybrid tactics including cyber-attacks” of some sort.

“We have seen that Russia continues to interfere in our democratic political processes and undermine our democratic institutions,” Stoltenberg stated, without giving any concrete examples.

Johnson provided a similar list of “samples” of Russia’s allegedly “reckless behavior,” also adding the ongoing anti-terrorism campaign in Syria to the list. It was unclear how the Foreign Secretary considered fighting internationally recognized terrorist groups under the invitation of a country’s democratically elected government would be considered “reckless.”

Stoltenberg insisted that NATO’s approach to Russia was “firm, defensive and proportionate,” but with “openness to a meaningful dialogue.”

“We continue to call on Russia to provide complete disclosure of the Novichok program to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons,” Stoltenberg said, while he accused Russia of “disregard for international peace and security,” which was apparently shown through Moscow’s reaction to the UK’s accusations over the Skripal case.

Russia has firmly dismissed all the allegations and urged the UK to provide samples of the nerve agent or some other evidence, instead of simply producing hysterical accusations.

“The fact, that they [UK officials] categorically reject to file an official request and deliberately and arrogantly fan anti-Russian rhetoric in the public sphere bordering on hysteria, indicates that they clearly understand they have no formal pretext to go down a legal road,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

Balance Risk, Rewards, And Reckless Driving In Procedural Freerider Descenders https://briefnews.eu/balance-risk-rewards-and-reckless-driving-in-procedural-freerider-descenders/ https://briefnews.eu/balance-risk-rewards-and-reckless-driving-in-procedural-freerider-descenders/#respond Fri, 09 Feb 2018 16:18:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/balance-risk-rewards-and-reckless-driving-in-procedural-freerider-descenders/ descenders2.jpg
Newly-released downhill biking game Descenders sends you hurtling down a mountain at breakneck speeds. This is incredibly reckless, highly dangerous, and more than a little frightening – and you’ll probably love every second of it.

The tracks in Descenders are randomly generated and you can always pick between three tracks with different traits. If you do particularly well and complete an extra objective in each level, you gain an extra life. This often leads to you seeking out danger and performing death-defying stunts such as backflips, 360s, and other weird stuff – instead of playing it safe.

This way of chaining together random tracks works really well. It adds a sense of progression to an otherwise rather pointless activity and rewards you with new bikes and new clothes to wear – all of which are purely cosmetic, mind.

While the first set of levels has wide open spaces which allow you to just go around most obstacles, the second set requires perfect driving in a serpentine wooden area. It’s quite the difficulty spike.

If you run out of “lives”, the game sends you back to the very beginning – unless you manage to unlock new areas by repeatedly completing a terifying boss jump at the end of each set.

descenders1.jpg

What might hold Descenders back the most is its reluctance to embrace the silliness of hurtling down a mountain and the ensuing hilarious mishaps. Jumping over a railroad bridge is ridiculous, no need to look like an earnest sports game while you’re doing it.

Give me something to laugh about! Give me top hats and monocles! Give me clown costumes or giant chicken suits! In its current state, the game seems almost too straightfaced. This is a hilarious arcade game, not a simulation! With their previous title Action Henk, RageSquid have proven that they can do funny, after all.

But then, this is an Early Access title. Who knows what else the developers come up with? (There seem to be placeholders for hats, so my prayers for more silliness will probably be heard.) The foundations are there, and they are more than solid. The progression system feels good and the addition of daily runs and leaderboards should provide some fierce competition.

You can purchase Descenders from Steam for $ 24.99. The game will also be coming to Xbox Game Preview soon. For more information, visit the game’s website or follow developer RageSquid on Twitter.

(Disclosure: former indiegames.com editor Mike Rose is publishing the game on his label No More Robots.)

‘Irresponsible, reckless, unjust, and just plain cruel’: Democrats blast GOP tax bill after it passes https://briefnews.eu/irresponsible-reckless-unjust-and-just-plain-cruel-democrats-blast-gop-tax-bill-after-it-passes/ https://briefnews.eu/irresponsible-reckless-unjust-and-just-plain-cruel-democrats-blast-gop-tax-bill-after-it-passes/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 07:45:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/irresponsible-reckless-unjust-and-just-plain-cruel-democrats-blast-gop-tax-bill-after-it-passes/ cory bookerJulio Cortez/AP

  • The US Senate passed the Republican tax bill in a 51 to 48 vote early Wednesday morning.
  • Democrats railed against the controversial tax bill, which received the vote from nearly every Republican senator.

After the Senate passed the polarizing GOP tax bill in a 51 to 48 vote in Washington early Wednesday morning, Democratic lawmakers lambasted their Republican colleagues, nearly all of whom voted for the bill.

“When the story of this tax plan is written, congressional Republicans will be remembered for never wavering in their determination to give a massive tax cut to corporations,” Sen. Cory Booker said in a statement. “It’s foolhardy at best and deceitful at worst.”

“This bill will exacerbate inequality, not ameliorate it,” Booker continued. “It’s irresponsible, reckless, unjust, and just plain cruel – and for these reasons and more, today is one of my most disappointing days as a U.S. Senator.”

“We are witnessing highway robbery in broad daylight and a looting of the Federal Treasury,” Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said in a passionate speech Wednesday.

Split on party lines, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) managed to recruit all Republican senators except for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who is at home resting after receiving treatment for brain cancer last week. The bill is scheduled to go back to the House for a technical vote before it lands on President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.

“It was a farce,” Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware said in a statement. “From the start, Republicans’ race to get partisan tax reform across the finish line has made a mockery of our legislative process.”

“My Republican colleagues are desperate for a win, and clearly willing to call anything a win,” Carper continued.

Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia issued a terse statement: “This is the worst piece of legislation we have passed since I arrived in the Senate.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said on Twitter: “The bill that the Republicans jammed through the Senate tonight isn’t tax reform. It’s a heist. Let’s call this out for what it is: Government for sale.”

“Sooner or later, a reckoning is coming,” Warren warned. “And I will promise you this: When it does, the politicians who lead this Congress & voted for this tax heist will be held accountable for turning their backs on the American people.”

The bill, which is expected to make sweeping changes to the current tax code for businesses and individual taxpayers, managed to pass the House by a comfortable margin with its 227-203 vote Tuesday afternoon.

The bill is generally expected to give a modest boost to the US economy, but by less of a margin than what Republican lawmakers have promised. However, independent analyses show that the bill’s final version will add $ 448 billion to over $ 1 trillion to the federal deficit over a decade, which contradicts the GOP’s message that the legislation will pay for itself.

The majority of American voters think President Donald Trump is reckless, sexist, and thin-skinned, according to a new Morning Consult/Politico poll.

Asked for their opinion on whether a list of both positive and negative descriptors applied to the president, 59% of those polled said the president is reckless, 55% said he is sexist, and 53% said he is thin-skinned, while just 34% described him as trustworthy, 35% called him honest, and 35% said he was steady.

The survey was conducted during the two days following the president’s June 29th tweets crudely attacking MSNBC hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough.

Sixty-five percent of voters — and 46% of Republicans — said the president’s comments about Brzezinski, whom he called “crazy” and claimed was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when he saw her earlier this year, were unacceptable.

A plurality of voters — 38% — said Trump’s attacks on Brzezinski gave them a “much less favorable” view of the president.

The survey of 1,989 registered voters was conducted between June 29 and 30 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. Thirty-nine percent of those surveyed voted for Trump in November, while 37% voted for Hillary Clinton.

Convicting someone of a crime depends in part on the mental state of the criminal. We make a distinction between knowing criminality and recklessness, and we give the two states of mind different levels of legal culpability. In the courtroom, however, assessing these mental states and a criminal’s past intentions can be extremely challenging.

However, neuroscience may soon give us hints about what’s going on internally as criminals knowingly committed their crimes. A recent study published in PNAS asserts that brain activity is different in people who know they are committing a crime, and that activity can be used to distinguish them from people who commit crimes recklessly (no, this is not science fiction). If the data is sound, this study seems to suggest that brain imaging could determine a criminal’s mindset—but only if the imaging is performed while the crime is being committed.

To conduct this study, the authors in PNAS performed brain imaging with human subjects and then analyzed the data using a machine-learning algorithm. Brain-imaging study participants were placed in an fMRI machine and presented with a scenario in which they mentally role-played carrying a suitcase through a guarded checkpoint. This mental role-play was accompanied by images on a screen within the MRI tube.
