WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is considering a plan that would allow states to require certain food stamp recipients to undergo drug testing, handing a win to conservatives who’ve long sought ways to curb the safety net program.

The proposal under review would be narrowly targeted, applying mostly to people who are able-bodied, without dependents and applying for some specialized jobs, according to an administration official briefed on the plan. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said roughly 5 percent of participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program could be affected.

Florida phishing attack exposes data for 30,000 Medicaid recipients https://briefnews.eu/florida-phishing-attack-exposes-data-for-30000-medicaid-recipients/ https://briefnews.eu/florida-phishing-attack-exposes-data-for-30000-medicaid-recipients/#respond Sun, 07 Jan 2018 13:12:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/florida-phishing-attack-exposes-data-for-30000-medicaid-recipients/

Large-scale medical hacks are horrible in themselves, but sometimes it’s the ease of the hacks that’s scary — and Florida knows this first-hand. The state’s Agency for Health Care Administration has warned that a phishing attack compromised data for as many as 30,000 Medicaid recipients. One of its staffers fell for a “malicious phishing email” on November 15th, giving hackers access not only to identifying info like names, addresses and Medicaid ID numbers, but also diagnoses and medical conditions. A would-be fraudster would theoretically have almost everything they could want.

The agency claimed there was “no reason to believe” the info had been abused, but that’s not much consolation. It’s not clear who was responsible for the attack or what their motivations might be. At least some previous attacks were conducted by Chinese hackers hoping to learn about American health care, but this could also be the work of private scammers or state-sponsored agents with alternate methods.

The breach illustrates how medical networks continue to be fragile: an email is all it took to directly expose the most sensitive data of thousands of users. The AHCA is taking a step to resolve this by training staff on security measures, but you might not see a lasting solution until private info is further separated from the outside world.

Trump administration memo urges DACA recipients to ‘prepare for and arrange their departure’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-administration-memo-urges-daca-recipients-to-prepare-for-and-arrange-their-departure/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-administration-memo-urges-daca-recipients-to-prepare-for-and-arrange-their-departure/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2017 16:05:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-administration-memo-urges-daca-recipients-to-prepare-for-and-arrange-their-departure/ donald trumpAssociated Press/Evan Vucci

A talking points memo issued by the White House on Tuesday said the Department of Homeland Security urges DACA recipients to use the time remaining on their work permits “to prepare for and arrange their departure from the United States.”

The memo, obtained by multiple media outlets, comes after the Trump administration on Tuesday announced it would end DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which protects from deportation roughly 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children.

The memo suggests “proactively seeking travel documentation — or to apply for other immigration benefits for which they may be eligible.”

“As noted, we expect Congress to pass legislation so this will hopefully be a moot point,”Department of Homeland Security spokesman David Lapan told CNN. “However, of course we would encourage persons who are in the country illegally to depart voluntarily, or seek another form of immigration benefit for which they might qualify.”

The same memo noted that immigrants who lose their DACA protection “will not proactively be referred to ICE and placed in removal proceedings unless they satisfy one of the Department’s enforcement priorities.”

Generally, the DHS describes its “enforcement priorities” as undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of crimes or pose a threat to national security.

The DACA program will be phased out over six months, which gives Congress opportunity to enact a replacement program. If no such program is created, some DACA recipients will see their work authorizations expire as early as March 6, 2018. Others, whose permits are set to expire in the near future, may still renew their authorization by October 5, 2017 and receive another two years of protection.

Yet the Trump administration has already sent mixed messages on the future of DACA recipients — on Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump tweeted that if Congress is unable to “legalize DACA,” he would “revisit this issue.”

Trump adviser tells DACA recipients to ‘go home and get in line’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-adviser-tells-daca-recipients-to-go-home-and-get-in-line/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-adviser-tells-daca-recipients-to-go-home-and-get-in-line/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2017 20:11:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-adviser-tells-daca-recipients-to-go-home-and-get-in-line/ hallie jackson kris kobachMSNBC

One of President Donald Trump’s top allies and a member of his voter fraud commission praised the president’s decision to end a program that shields from deportation about 800,000 immigrants who arrived in the US as children and allows them to apply for legal work permits.

In a contentious interview with NBC News’ Hallie Jackson, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach argued that those who enjoy protections under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA, “represent a cross section of the illegal alien population,” arguing that while some are “scholars,” others are “criminals.”

“At this point the question is, ‘Okay, you no longer have that illegal, that status that President Obama gave you and he had no authority to give you. So, you’re back into your illegal status,” Kobach said. “I would suggest go home and get in line, come into the United States legally, then get a green card, then become a citizen.”

“Do it the right way like so many hundreds of thousands of your countrymen are trying to do,” he continued. “What’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with following the law?”

A member of Trump’s commission on supposed voter fraud, Kobach has emerged as one of the most vocal advocates for the president’s immigration agenda, having garnered a reputation as a conservative immigration legal expert during his time working in the Justice Department under President George W. Bush.

Kobach has made his hardline positions on immigration a theme of his Kansas gubernatorial bid and his political ascendancy — he once agreed with an individual who called into his radio show saying immigration could lead to “ethic cleansing” of whites in America.

Unveiled in 2012 under President Barack Obama, the DACA program has served as a way to allow illegal immigrants who were brought to the US as children, many of whom have lived almost their entire lives in the US, to work in the country legally. Many immigration reform advocates have repeatedly pointed out that DACA recipients are a diverse group of Americans, but the program improved upward mobility for immigrants.

Food Stamp Recipients Spend 20 Percent Of Their Allowance On Junk Foods, $608 Million Spent On Soda Alone, USDA Says https://briefnews.eu/food-stamp-recipients-spend-20-percent-of-their-allowance-on-junk-foods-608-million-spent-on-soda-alone-usda-says/ https://briefnews.eu/food-stamp-recipients-spend-20-percent-of-their-allowance-on-junk-foods-608-million-spent-on-soda-alone-usda-says/#respond Mon, 23 Jan 2017 08:57:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/food-stamp-recipients-spend-20-percent-of-their-allowance-on-junk-foods-608-million-spent-on-soda-alone-usda-says/

The USDA released somewhat startling data regarding the purchases made by Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as food stamps, recipients. The study found that 20 percent of SNAP benefits were being used to purchase “junk foods” which include “sweetened beverages, desserts, salty snacks, candy and sugar.” The most popular junk item purchased with food stamps benefits was soda pop accounting for 5 percent of all food stamps transactions. Now many health organizations and states are asking for soda pop and junk foods to be restricted for recipients while soda manufacturers have banded together to oppose such restrictions.

The USDA report outlines exactly what is most likely in the carts of families who utilize the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Prior to this report, it was really unknown what individuals were purchasing with the program that has few guidelines outside of items needing to carry a nutritional label instead of a supplement label. However, the study has offered a rare look into the shopping carts of millions and showcased what many believe to be an underlying problem with obesity in America.

The report found that while the most money was spent on meat, poultry, and fish, the second biggest ticket item was soda pop. Soda accounted for 5 percent of total expenditures costing $ 608 million in SNAP charges. The New York Times reports that many feel that such a large chunk of money going to one industry is tantamount to a government subsidy and should be restricted.

Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies, and public health at New York University, called the findings “shocking” claiming that we should consider the implications of the study as a whole.

“In this sense, SNAP is a multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy of the soda industry.”

The controversy over food stamp restrictions is not new. In fact, cities, states, medical groups, and nonprofit organizations have asked for the USDA to help improve the health of the 43 million poorest Americans in the country by restricting the purchase of junk foods with SNAP benefits. Despite the pleas, the USDA has long held the position that banning certain foods would be “unfair” to food stamps users and that it would cause too much red tapes for families that just need help with food purchases.

David Ludwig, the director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital, says he disagrees with the USDA claims noting that no one would suggest that people on food stamps shouldn’t be able to choose the foods they want to eat. However, he says something must be done about products that “undermine public health.”

“No one is suggesting poor people can’t choose what they want to eat. But we’re saying let’s not use government benefits to pay for foods that are demonstrably going to undermine public health.”

It should come as no surprise that the soda and candy industry are heavily opposing any restrictions on food stamp purchases when it comes to nutritionally controversial food items. In fact, the candy and beverage industries have banded together on the cause opposing any regulations that would restrict food purchase access to SNAP users.

While food stamp users do use a substantial amount of benefits on soda, Kevin Concannon, the U.S.D.A. under secretary for food, points out that soda consumption is high among those not on food stamps as well.

“Sweetened beverages are a common purchase in all households across America. This report raises a question for all households: Are we consuming too many sweetened beverages, period?”

So where do food stamps users stand in comparison to non-food stamps households in soda consumption? The study found that food stamps households purchased soda pop as the second most commonly purchased item just below meat and poultry, whereas, non-food stamp households placed soda pop fifth on the list behind meat, vegetables, cheese, and fruits.

Do you think SNAP recipients should be restricted regarding the purchase of “junk food” items or will it cause too much red tapes for families in need? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
