Uncommon Goods, $ 40

Shopping for coworkers can become a never-ending parade of mild pine-scented candles, Hallmark cards, and candy that is destined for retirement in a desk drawer for most of January. It’s easier to buy thoughtful, impactful gifts for your closest loved ones, and it gets harder once you add in the subtleties and professionalism of the workplace.

However, there are hordes of fantastic gifts out there for coworkers. And they don’t have to be expensive — in fact, they probably shouldn’t be. The ideal colleague present is thoughtful, unique, and lands somewhere in the casual middle ground between re-gifting paperclips from the supply closet and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Caribbean.

Below, you’ll find 30 of the best coworker gifts for under $ 50.

Here’s a $ 13 nod to the fond shared stressors.

DVLA car tax scam WARNING – If you receive this message, here's what you should do https://briefnews.eu/dvla-car-tax-scam-warning-if-you-receive-this-message-heres-what-you-should-do/ https://briefnews.eu/dvla-car-tax-scam-warning-if-you-receive-this-message-heres-what-you-should-do/#respond Thu, 06 Sep 2018 16:05:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dvla-car-tax-scam-warning-if-you-receive-this-message-heres-what-you-should-do/

It is not an uncommon thing for con artists to send fraudulent messages to motorists posing to be the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Over the years there have been many reports of by someone claiming to be the DVLA either asking for money or offering a refund.

Car tax can be incredibly complex, especially given the fact that it has which means motorists could be more at risk of being targeted by fraudsters.

The latest scam looks fairly legitimate in the format of the words by the logo at the top of the interaction is fairly contentious.

It is stretched across the top of the banner in an unnatural way but due to the convincing nature of the text then the motorist could still be fooled.

Typically the message reads: “Security Alert.

“We would like to notify you that you still have an outstanding vehicle tax refund of £47.94 from an overpayment, despite our precious letters regarding your refund we are yet to receive your claim.

“Requests for refunds are time-limited please use the link below to complete your refund request.

“Please note: You’ll usually get the refund in 4 to 6 weeks, but it may take longer in some cases.

“You should wait 6 weeks before contacting us about the payment.

“Best Regards, Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency.”

Today, the DVLA tweeted out a number of links to articles published on their website regarding what a driver should do when they receive a message of this nature.

One read: “We’re aware that some members of the public are receiving emails, texts and telephone calls claiming to be from DVLA.

“Links to a website mocked up to look like a DVLA online service are sometimes included in the message.

“We don’t send emails or text messages with links to websites asking you to confirm your personal details or payment information.

“We strongly advise anyone who receives such a request not to open the link and delete the item.”

It also offers some advice to how a motorist can guarantee their safety when they need to deal with the DVLA.

“By using the online driving licence or vehicle tax transactions on GOV.UK you can be sure that you are dealing directly with DVLA,” the message reads.

Similarly, it is warning drivers about fraudulent websites pretending to be the DVLA.

The agency urged drivers to always be sure they are using a gov.uk website and check the URL carefully before they enter any details.

Windows 10 users set to receive brand new Dark Theme – here's how to get it https://briefnews.eu/windows-10-users-set-to-receive-brand-new-dark-theme-heres-how-to-get-it/ https://briefnews.eu/windows-10-users-set-to-receive-brand-new-dark-theme-heres-how-to-get-it/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2018 12:24:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/windows-10-users-set-to-receive-brand-new-dark-theme-heres-how-to-get-it/

Dark modes appear to be rising in prominence with Apple making it a headline feature of its new macOS Mojave update and the Outlook email client recently giving users an option to turn the lights off.

Windows 10 users already have the option to turn on dark mode, but it has previously excluded File Explorer.

But now Microsoft has announced a Dark Theme is available for members of the Windows Insiders programme and will presumably be rolled out to all users later this year.

In a blog post the company explained having a Dark Theme for File Explorer was a “top request” from users.

Microsoft declared: “We’re excited to announce that Dark Theme support for File Explorer is ready for the next major release of Windows.

“Adding a dark theme to File Explorer has long been a top Insider request. Some users find that a dark theme is easier on the eyes.

“Others simply like the fresh, new look. But while dark mode has been available in Windows for some time, it hasn’t applied to File Explorer, until now.”

The Windows Insider programme is a platform users can sign up to – it allows pre-release versions of new updates to be tested early.

The downside to opting in to such an initiative is bugs are typically more prominent in software versions that are not final.

Members of the Insiders programme need to make sure they are in Preview Build 17733 to see the new File Explorer design.

Users will then have to the app’s settings menu and click on the “personalisation” option before pressing “colours”.

An option for “dark” will then appear under the “choose your app mode” section.

Microsoft released pictures of the new mode that will surely make browsing through files easier on the eyes.

However, the tech giant has not yet revealed when the Dark Theme will be made available to all Windows 10 users.

It is presumed it will come bundled in with the next major update for the software dubbed Redstone 5 that is widely expected to land in a few months time.

Cambridge Analytica says it did not receive Twitter data from researcher https://briefnews.eu/cambridge-analytica-says-it-did-not-receive-twitter-data-from-researcher/ https://briefnews.eu/cambridge-analytica-says-it-did-not-receive-twitter-data-from-researcher/#respond Mon, 30 Apr 2018 17:37:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cambridge-analytica-says-it-did-not-receive-twitter-data-from-researcher/

After a report over the weekend revealed that the researcher accused of giving analytics firm Cambridge Analytica improper access to Facebook user data also had access to data from Twitter’s API, Cambridge Analytica is denying that it worked with the researcher on data obtained from Twitter.

Cambridge Analytica tweeted this morning that the firm “has never received Twitter data from GSR [Global Science Research] or Aleksandr Kogan, and has never done any work with GSR on Twitter data. GSR was only ever a contractor to Cambridge Analytica and we understand it did work for many other companies.”

Twitter confirmed to British news outlet The Telegraph on Saturday that it sold Kogan — the creator of the app “This Is Your Digital Life” — and his firm, Global Science Research, one-day access in 2015 to data from Twitter’s API. Kogan told The Telegraph that he did not use the data in any way that violated Twitter’s policies.

Kogan and GSR had access to “a random sample of public tweets from a five-month period from December 2014 to April 2015,” according to a statement from Twitter provided to Bloomberg. Twitter said that Kogan and GSR did not have access to any private data.

A Twitter spokesperson also told VentureBeat that the company has removed Cambridge Analytica as an advertiser, and that “this decision is based on our determination that Cambridge Analytica operates using a business model that inherently conflicts with acceptable Twitter Ads business practices.” Cambridge Analytica, however, is still allowed to have a Twitter account.

Since the British news outlet The Guardian reported in mid-March that Cambridge Analytica improperly gained access to the personal data of up to 50 million Facebook users from Kogan, lawmakers in both the U.S. and the U.K. have been pushing Facebook for more details on what third parties the company knows of that may have improperly gained access to large amounts of user data. The number of users that Cambridge Analytica may have obtained data on was later revised to up to 87 million people by Facebook.

Anger over how Cambridge Analytica accessed the data prompted Facebook to announce that it would be auditing all apps that were given access to large amounts of data before the company made changes to the amount of data third-party apps could collect in 2014, as well as those that exhibited any “suspicious behavior.”

In an interview with Buzzfeed last week, Kogan said that he spent a week as a paid consultant to Facebook in November 2015, and gave several talks at the company’s Menlo Park campus in 2013. Facebook hired Kogan’s GSR cofounder, Joseph Chancellor, in late 2015, and according to Facebook’s website, Chancellor still works there.

Russia’s UNSC resolution calling to stop aggression against Syria does not receive enough votes https://briefnews.eu/russias-unsc-resolution-calling-to-stop-aggression-against-syria-does-not-receive-enough-votes/ https://briefnews.eu/russias-unsc-resolution-calling-to-stop-aggression-against-syria-does-not-receive-enough-votes/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 17:59:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russias-unsc-resolution-calling-to-stop-aggression-against-syria-does-not-receive-enough-votes/

A Russian draft resolution calling to stop aggression against Syria has been turned down by the UN Security Council due to a lack of support during the vote. It was only supported by Russia, China and Bolivia.

The Russian draft urged the US and its allies to “immediately and without delay cease the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic’ and refrain from further aggressive acts in violation of the international law and the UN Charter.”

The paper also pointed out that the aggression “took place at the moment when the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Fact-Finding Mission team has just begun its work to collect evidence of the alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma.” It also called for all necessary conditions to be provided for the OPCW experts to do their job properly.

The Russian draft was supported by three nations: Russia itself, Bolivia and China. Eight countries, including the US, the UK and France, which carried out missile strikes against Syria, voted ‘no,’ with four other countries abstaining.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Washington and its allies unleashed more than 100 missiles on civilian and military facilities in Syria in response to an alleged gas attack in Douma on April 7 that the West has blamed on Bashar Assad’s government. The Pentagon hailed the bombing as a success, saying that three sites – that it claimed were used to produce chemical weapons – were destroyed.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Syrian air defense systems intercepted 71 cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles fired by the US-led allies. Damascus and Moscow have previously refuted the chemical attack accusation, saying the whole thing was fabricated.

One of Meghan Markle’s parents will receive a coat of arms – but what will it look like? https://briefnews.eu/one-of-meghan-markles-parents-will-receive-a-coat-of-arms-but-what-will-it-look-like/ https://briefnews.eu/one-of-meghan-markles-parents-will-receive-a-coat-of-arms-but-what-will-it-look-like/#respond Wed, 28 Mar 2018 12:48:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/one-of-meghan-markles-parents-will-receive-a-coat-of-arms-but-what-will-it-look-like/

Meghan Markle’s parents will be given a coat of arms, according to recent claims. This will see the American follow in the footsteps of Kate Middleton.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 36, also had a coat of arms created for her father before she married Prince William, 35.

It is the father of the person marrying into the royal family who gets a coat arms, an old fashioned practise some might think seems rather sexist.

However, the tradition still stands, and now it is believed Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle Sr a cinematographer who lives in Mexico, will have a coat of arms created for him by the Royal Family.

A coat of arms is a design that you typically inherit from your father.

It has a number of images and a motto, and belongs to a family to signify them.

It was often featured on shields to symbolise the family to which hit belonged.

It’s an ancient tradition from the Middle Ages, and many families in the modern age do not have a coat of arms and if they did would not use it.

Of course, as one of the UK’s oldest families – the royals have a coat of arms which most would recognise on sight.

The practice is now wide spread throughout the world, and they appear all over Europe, Asia and North Africa.

Kate Middleton’s coat of arms was reportedly given to her father Michael Middleton just before her wedding in 2011. It was a pretty design that made a nod to nature.

It represented the three children of the family with three acorn designs and was also a nod to the fact the family resides in Berkshire, where there are many oak tress.

There was a gold stripe down the middle to reference Carole Middleton’s maiden name Goldsmith.

Many Britons make like the idea of having a coat of arms, but legally a coat of arms must be granted to them, unless they have inherited one from their paternal line.

In England this is regulated by the College of Arms and the High Court of Chivalry.

While many might think the later belongs in a history book or period drama, it is in fact a real court which presides over the issue of heraldry. However, it now rarely sits.

Thomas Woodcock, Garter Principal King of Arms, who design Michael Middleton’s crest said: “Tests for eminence are very wide in that they include possession of a university degree or a professional qualification.

“A great many people in the country could, if they wish, have a coat of arms, but if we were to advertise too much it would debase our own currency.”

Meghan’s father will probably be given a coat of arms so that when she marries Harry an arms representing the both of them can be created.

Kate Middleton’s family had special jewellery created for her wedding day. Now an expert has revealed Meghan Markle’s wedding day jewellery.

Elderly to receive 'MoT' grants to improve homes in bid to save NHS money https://briefnews.eu/elderly-to-receive-mot-grants-to-improve-homes-in-bid-to-save-nhs-money-2/ https://briefnews.eu/elderly-to-receive-mot-grants-to-improve-homes-in-bid-to-save-nhs-money-2/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 22:23:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/elderly-to-receive-mot-grants-to-improve-homes-in-bid-to-save-nhs-money-2/

Cold housing can lead to chronic conditions, like lung and heart diseases and poor mental health, as well as heart attacks, strokes and falls.

As part of the NHS’s Integrated Care System, residents who qualify will be offered stair lifts, boilers, insulation, heating and grants.

Among the local authorities in England taking part in the scheme – which sees the NHS share budgets and resources with councils – is Wycombe District in Buckinghamshire.

Medics and social care providers refer patients for stair lifts or central heating as part of their “Healthy Homes on Prescription” project.

Pensioners or people with a long-term chronic health condition can apply for grants of up to £5,000 without means testing to help prevent hospital admissions and GP visits.

A King’s Fund and National Housing Federation report put the NHS cost of poor housing at £1.4billion a year.

It states that reducing excess cold in homes would save the NHS around £848million a year and reducing all falls in the home could save it £435million.

Three-quarters of deaths related to falls are at home.

Simple home modifications such as installing handrails, outside lighting and slip-resistant surfaces resulted in a 39 per cent drop in injuries and a 26 per cent cut in medical treatment.

Simon Stevens, NHS England’s chief executive, said: “Well-designed homes that are warm and hazard-free reduce the risk of accidents and falls as well as major cardiovascular and respiratory hospitalisations.

“That is why the NHS is working with our council, voluntary sector and housing colleagues who can make a huge difference to the lives of millions of our fellow citizens.”

Councillor Izzi Seccombe, at the Local Government Association, said: “Councils are determined to show benefits of cost-effective prevention work.”
